February 15th, 2023

Summary

Are you excited for the Dawn of DC? Dan is here to give you a run down of the new #1's coming your way from now until April so you can make sure you're checking them out.

Hey Third Eye Faithful!

We’re stoked to be introducing a new part of Team Third Eye with Dan McMahon, who’ll be helping us bring you more great features like this! Dan says it a bit better than us below, but he was one of the very first customers to walk through the doors of Third Eye when we first opened in 2008, and has grown up with Third Eye!

We’re pumped to have him bringing his passion and excitement for seeing people dive into comics!

DC Comics has gone through a number of eras in the past 30 years. I say 30 specifically because I’ve only been around to experience that many.

For 15 of those years, Third Eye Comics has been my home for all nerdy needs which specifically started with an era shift for DC Comics.

The first book that I ever added to a pull list in my life was Grant Morrison’s Final Crisis at the first Third Eye Comics shop.

Since then, I have gone on to create my own nerd site with GateCrashers, worked as a comics features editor for CBR, and now I write about horror comics for FANGORIA.

But through it all, there have been two constants: DC Comics and Third Eye.

I’ve been with the shop through Flashpoint, the New 52, and everything after. So when I tell you that I am beyond excited for the DAWN OF DC, you better believe it.

What is the DAWN OF DC?

The DC Universe is coming out of a tailspin after the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths and Lazarus Planet, which both turned the universe on its head and back again. First, Dark Crisis took the Justice League off the playing board and put the legacy characters like Nightwing up against the biggest foes the multiverse has ever seen. Then Lazarus Planet brought the term “when it rains, it pours” to life for the DCU by having a lazarus pit rainfall that messed up a lot of heroes powers and made things tough for everyone.

But now, the sun is back and the DC Universe is entering a new universe with a much different line up than we’ve seen before. We’re getting a ton of new #1’s that are definitely are titles you’ll want to pick up with incredible writers, jaw dropping art teams, and characters you love!

Dawn of New #1s

Superman #1

Superman is back on Earth after being gone for some time during the War World saga over in Action Comics, so it’s time to get back to work. But work for Clark is a little different than us because, well, he’s Superman so he has all of that responsibility. Things are a bit different at his actual job as well because Lois Lane is now the interim editor in chief of the Daily Planet. Along with all of that, Lex Luthor has a few tricks up his sleeve even when he’s behind jail because he’s left a mysterious SUPERCORP for Superman to handle. The art from Jamal Campbell in this issue is breathtaking so you’ll want to make sure you’re picking this up.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1

Who doesn’t love a group of weirdo misfits? If you’ve loved the HBO Max DOOM PATROL show, you’re going to want to pick up the team’s latest outing. After the events of Lazarus Planet have activated the metagenes in tons of normal people, many are being treated as outcasts to only be used as guinea pigs or weapons. The Doom Patrol are experts in the outcast department so it’s their job to help out these people as best they can. The team is also joined by two brand-new teammates Beast Girl and Degenerate!

Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent #1

Tom Taylor returns with a new #1 for the son of Superman, Jon Kent! But this book isn’t just about Jon because Val-Zod, the second Superman of Earth 2, has come to Jon for help. Their mission: Stop Ultraman from killing the Supermen of Supermen. We have seen some teasers for this series which includes an electric blue version of Jon which we haven’t seen since his time as part of the Super Sons. If you’ve loved Jon Kent’s journey so far in the DCU, this one is not to be missed.

Superboy, Man of Tomorrow #1

Jon isn’t the only Super boy to be getting his own #1 during the Dawn of DC. Superboy, Conner Kent, is finally getting another comic of his own again! The series was the winner of DC Round Robin 2022 which was a series fans voted to get made. Since Conner made his return to the DC Universe a few years ago, he’s been searching for his place ever since. This series is going to be one about self discovery where Conner looks for his place. Kenny Porter just wrapped his killer series DC Mechs recently so if you loved that, make sure you pick this one up.

Green Arrow #1

Green Arrow is BACK! Well, wait, he kinda is back. After the events of Dark Crisis, Oliver Quinn is back in the DC Universe but he’s lost. The series is going to follow the whole arrow family as they search for Oliver. The series will star Black Canary which is enough to make any long time DC fan pick this one up. But it’s also where we will learn more about one of the breakout star of Dark Crisis, Red Canary and how she is going to fit into the Green Arrow side of DC Comics.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!

That is only 5 of the new #1 series coming in the near future. Next month, I’ll be back to tell you about some of the other series that are to come. From the Titans taking up the reigns as one of the planet’s defenders, to Cyborg getting a new solo series from a creative team from DC’s incredible Milestone Initiative, and so much more. New #1’s are always a great place to jump into a new series to see if they’re going to be something you might enjoy! Next month there will be a lot more to talk about so make sure you let the shop know you want to check these out before we get the next wave!
