THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 11/30/11

NEW COMICS ARRIVE ON WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK

NO HOLIDAY DELAYS!

NICK SPENCER’S CULT FAVORITE, THUNDER AGENTS, RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH THE DC NEW 52 IN THUNDER AGENTS VOL.2 #1, RIGHT ALONGSIDE THE THUNDER AGENTS TRADE PAPERBACK WHICH COLLECTS THE ENTIRE FIRST SERIES (1-10) FOR ONLY $24.99!

A MUST READ FOR FANS OF IRREDEEMABLE, THE BOYS, THE AUTHORITY, MORRISON’S DOOM PATROL, WATCHMEN AND MORE FROM THE WRITER OF “MORNING GLORIES” & “INFINITE VACATION”

Out of all the new DC stuff coming down the pipeline, I have to admit: I am totally stoked to see Spencer’s incredible THUNDER AGENTS series getting another crack at awesomeness. The first round of this series was incredible, and one of the highlights of the pre-NEW 52 DC part of 2010. As one of the series that ended in the midst of the road to the DC NEW 52, we just knew that THUNDER AGENTS was too good to not return.. and we were right. ūüôā

This critically acclaimed series brings us a #1 this Wednesday which serves as a fantastic jumping on point for new readers. However, for those of you who’d prefer to start from the very beginning, DC is putting out the THUNDER AGENTS trade paperback this Wednesday as well, which collects 1-10 of the entire THUNDER AGENTS run from Spencer and Cafu, and it’s only $24.99 which is a pretty slick deal for a 10-issue trade.

What’s the scoop on THUNDER AGENTS?¬†This series, which gives a very dark, harrowing portrayal of the kind of people who willingly become super-heroes knowing their powers will eventually kill them, shows us a very interesting look at the dynamic of superheroes, and how they would function in the here and now of the real world.

The question posed is: would you rather burn out or fade away? The THUNDER AGENTS are individuals who have found themselves in situations and positions in life where they have nothing left to lose. They’ve got nothing driving them to keep on, and have found themselves offered one last shot to redeem themselves in the eyes of the world as heroes. The catch? The powers they’re given are killing them every time they use them. The speedster literally takes seconds off his life every time he runs. The superhuman strength guy’s organs find themselves slowly crushing with each constriction of his artifically-inflated muscles.

What drives these people? What motivates them to this extreme of self-destruction? Is it a noble pursuit, or something more selfish?

This is the driving plot of THUNDER AGENTS, and through that, we’re given an amazing run of traditional superhero action and adventure cast through a filter of modern day real-world espionage, and moral dilemmas.

Nick Spencer, the writer behind MORNING GLORIES, INFINITE VACATION and most recently, ULTIMATE X-MEN, brings his unique talent for writing believable characters in unbelievable situations to THUNDER AGENTS, and we’re loving it.

Wanna jump on?¬†Start with either THUNDER AGENTS VOL.2 #1, which is a perfect jumping on point, or snag this week’s THUNDER AGENTS VOL.1 TPB, which collects the entire first series.

BLUE TEAM – UNCANNY X-MEN #2 CONTINUES TO IMPRESS THIS WEDNESDAY AS THE HEAVYWEIGHTS OF MUTANTKIND SLUG IT OUT WITH A RECENTLY RETURNED MISTER SINISTER!

We are totally digging the whole BLUE TEAM / GOLD TEAM dynamic that Marvel has going on with it’s new line of X-Titles.

Whether it’s the old school with a new school twist of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, the return of Blink in NEW MUTANTS, or one of our big favorites, the heavyweight superhero theatrics of UNCANNY X-MEN, the X-BOOKS are stronger than they have been in YEARS.

When the teams split, due to the events of the killer SCHISM limited series (all 5 issues in stock and available now at Third Eye), Cyclops taking a decidedly much more MAGNETO-influenced stance, assembled a team of Marvel’s most powerful mutants. His X-Tinction team, he dubbed it. From Colossus rocking the Juggernaut’s powers to Storm to Namor and beyond, Cyclops has assembled the heaviest hitters in the world of the X-Men, and for one reason and one reason only: to protect and preserve the mutant race by any means necessary.

And, his first order of business, is to show the world as a whole that the X-Men are a true force. That the AVENGERS aren’t even on their level. And, so far: he’s doing one hell of a job.

In the first issue, Kieron Gillen did a fantastic job of setting everything up while still providing an action-packed opener at the same time. And, with the re-introduction of classic X-MEN villain, MR. SINISTER, to the mix, we’re hooked.

Missed #1? Looking for a good X-Title to jump onto fresh? We highly recommend snagging a copy of the first issue and catching up from that point forward.

We’ve got copies of UNCANNY X-MEN #1, as well as all 5 issues of SCHISM (the set up for both UNCANNY X-MEN and WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN) in stock to get you current.

DYNAMITE AND ALEX ROSS REVIVE THE ICONIC PULP HERO, FLASH GORDON, WITH THIS WEDNESDAY’S FLASH GORDON: ZEITGEIST #1 FOR ONLY $1.00!

The iconic pulp hero, FLASH GORDON, returns to the printed page this Wednesday with Dynamite’s brand new FLASH GORDON: ZEITGEIST series, which looks to be the most promising classic character revival since their killer relaunch of WARLORD OF MARS last year. We think a lot of you guys who’re digging the WARLORD OF MARS stuff will really dig the approach they’re taking with FLASH GORDON as well. It’s very true to the pulp sci-fi roots of the character.

Alex Ross provides story and character designs to Dynamite to take the ball and run with, and tell one hell of a FLASH GORDON tale.

As Flash Gordon’s story begins, it is a time of two-fisted swashbuckling, of fearsome threats and wild adventure-and of-ever growing threats on the horizon. Three valiant humans — Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov — are plucked from the Earth, traveling to the distant planet Mongo. Their exploits are legendary, battling the machinations and terror schemes of the dreaded emperor Ming, the All-Seeing Ruler of Mongo.

Very cool stuff, we’re totally pumped to see how this one turns out.

Try issue #1 for only $1.00 this week at Third Eye!

MORNING GLORIES GETS THE DELUXE HARDCOVER TREATMENT FROM IMAGE COMICS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH THE MORNING GLORIES DELUXE COLLECTION VOLUME 1 COLLECTING THE FIRST TWO TRADES (1-12) OF THE SERIES INTO ONE INCREDIBLE LOOKING OVERSIZED HC

¬†If you’re not reading MORNING GLORIES yet, you are totally doing yourself a major disservice in the department of reading awesome comics. Whether it’s the razor-sharp dialogue and compelling plot of writer Nick Spencer (INFINITE VACATION), or the incredible artwork of Joe Eisma, this book has got the goods in a major way.

One of the most exciting IMAGE series to debut since the launch of CHEW a few years ago, MORNING GLORIES delivers the kind of layered storytelling with strong characterization reminiscent of Brian K. Vaughan’s RUNAWAYS, and the television show LOST.

With a great mystery at the heart of the story that keeps you coming back again and again, MORNING GLORIES is very much similar to another Third Eye favorite, LOCKE & KEY, in regards to the unfolding puzzle the reader is given with each chapter.

And, this Wednesday, the first 12 issues (aka first two trade paperbacks worth) of this incredible series are collected into one impressive tome, along with never before seen sketches, character studies, and other extras that no fan will want to miss.

A must buy for any MORNING GLORIES fan, make sure you snag a copy of this one on Wednesday, or if you haven’t yet tried the series, either pick this one up, or snag the first softcover (1-6) for only $9.99.

Trust us, Third Eye Faithful, you won’t be sorry.

PERFECT FOR THE JUNIOR LANTERNS IN YOUR LIFE!

We totally dug what we saw of the new GREEN LANTERN ANIMATED SERIES, and are totally pumped for the series to officially begin.

In the meantime though, this rad new ongoing series based off the GREEN LANTERN ANIMATED SERIES will have to tide us over. ūüôā

Got a little guy or girl in your life that is totally digging on the GREEN LANTERN? This is a great all ages oriented title to pass their way.

And, heck, even if you’re a big kid like me, it’s pretty darn neat. ūüôā

FF #12 *FOREVER CHAPTER 2* – THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF THE INCREDIBLE ARC THAT BEGAN IN FANTASTIC FOUR #600 ARRIVES THIS WEEK IN FF #12

Last week, you guys got to hear me gush like mad about how freakin’ awesome I think Jonathan Hickman and his run on FANTASTIC FOUR / FF has been. Well, this week, I’ll save you the trouble from having to hear it all over again, and I’ll just say this: if you were as blown away as I was by the hot damn super awesome 100 page madness of FANTASTIC FOUR #600… then you will totally be stoked about this week’s FF #12, which is the second part of the FOREVER story arc that began in FANTASTIC FOUR #600.

And, trust me, after having my jaw dropped on the floor from that cliffhanger at the end of the first part of FF #600… I’m stoked to see where this one is heading.

The culmination of nearly 3 years worth of incredible stories, and delivering a tale that literally touches EVERY corner of the Marvel Universe, Hickman is right up there with Rick Remender as one of our favorite guys writing for Marvel right now.

Missed last week’s #600? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up.

A GAME OF THRONES #3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE OF GEORGE RR MARTIN’S EPIC IN COMIC BOOK FORM

Like the rest of the world right now, we’re huge fans of both the GAME OF THRONES television series on HBO, and the GAME OF THRONES novels from GEORGE RR MARTIN.

So, what’d you get when you take one of our favorite things, and apply it to our absolute favorite medium? Well, Game of Thrones comics that rock n roll all the way to the Narrow Sea.

So far, Dynamite has been doing an incredible job of bringing George RR Martin’s GAME OF THRONES saga to life in this new comic book series which adds a brand new dynamic to the world of GoT. And, considering all of this is officially overseen and endorsed by Mr. Martin himself, you can bet it’s quality stuff.

Missed 1 & 2? We’ve got copies of both in stock to get you hooked up, Third Eye Faithful.

BRIAN AZZARELLO AND EDUARDO RISSO, THE CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND THE NOW-LEGENDARY “100 BULLETS” CONTINUE THEIR NEW VERTIGO SERIES SPACEMAN THIS WEDNESDAY IN SPACEMAN #2

As major fans of Azzarello and Risso’s past works on stuff like 100 BULLETS and the more recent FLASHPOINT: BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE, we are totally stoked to see the dynamic duo working on a new VERTIGO project with their series SPACEMAN.

The world of SPACEMAN is a strange one, and upon first read, the initial issue is a little difficult to follow due to the futuristic dialects and immersive storytelling techniques Azzarello uses to set the stage of the book. However, once you’ve read through issue #2, the book begins to make a lot more sense, and you realize that the somewhat difficult to follow first issue is just the perfect way to acclimate you to the strange and surreal world of SPACEMAN.

SPACEMAN is the kind of bizarre and awesome comic that reminds you of a lot of the European-flavored comics that appeared in HEAVY METAL / METAL HURLANT, and it feels like a distant descendent of something like THE INCAL in a way.

Very cool stuff, and of course, Risso’s artwork is looking incredible, and helps bring a very grimy future weirdness to the world.

What’s it about? Meet Orson, a man genetically engineered to withstand the harsh journey to Mars, and finds himself never reaching his full potential and trapped in a seriously harsher reality.

As Orson travels the outskirts of the flooded city where he resides, Orson realizes that he and a crew of bloodthirsty pirates are after the same treasure.. but Orson wants the treasure alive, whereas the pirates don’t quite have the same goal.

Really cool stuff, if you missed #1, we’ve got copies in stock to catch you up.

X-MEN LEGACY #259 *GOLD TEAM РX-MEN REGENESIS TIE-IN* РA BOLD NEW ERA FOR X-MEN LEGACY BEGINS, AS THE CURRENT TEAM SPLITS, AND THE FOCUS SHIFTS TO THE INTERGALACTIC ADVENTURES OF POLARIS, HAVOK AND CREW

Many exciting changes in the X-BOOKS as the aftermath of SCHISM continues to be explored throughout X-MEN: REGENESIS. One of the most exciting changes I feel is the shift in direction of X-MEN LEGACY, as it becomes the “space” book of the X-line. I know that sounds weird, but folks: it’s going to rule.

Think about it: how many awesome X-MEN stories did we get from the intergalactic eras? The Starjammers, the Shi’ar, plus, a brand new playground to play with due to all the stuff that’s been done in ANNIHILATION, THANOS IMPERATIVE, and WAR OF KINGS. It’s going to rock.

And, maybe we’re just a bit biased, ’cause we’re big HAVOK fans.

This issue not only serves as a great jumping on point for X-MEN LEGACY, but it also establishes which X-MEN from this team will be going in which direction. The fates of Rogue, Gambit and Magneto are all explored, as well as the shift in direction for the title to the more cosmic-geared stories.

As the GOLD TEAM tie-in, I think we all know which way the bulk of the Legacy crew will be heading.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #4 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY CONTINUING THE KICK-ASS BACK TO BASICS TURTLES SERIES FROM IDW!

Now, you know, as children of the ’80s and ’90s, we have a pretty big soft spot for the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. Especially the hard-hitting old school stuff from the original comics. And, if that big amazing hardcover from last week wasn’t enough to get you stoked about the new NINJA TURTLES series from IDW, then we don’t know what will.

The new ongoing Turtles series from IDW is a fantastic example of modern comic storytelling and artwork applied to the classic stylings and aesthetic of the old school TMNT comics, back in the black and white days.

With a grittier, darker approach to the Turtles, and plenty of fan-favorites like ¬†Casey Jones showing up in the mix, this new Turtles series is freakin’ AWESOME.

Missed issues 1-3? Don’t worry, ’cause we’ve got copies of each in stock and available now to get you caught up in time for this week’s #4.

JONATHAN HICKMAN’S¬†ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #4¬†HITS THIS WEDNESDAY CONTINUING THE BEST RUN OF THE ULTIMATES WE’VE SEEN SINCE THE ORIGINAL MILLAR / HITCH STUFF

If you couldn’t already tell, we’re pretty big fans of Hickman’s stuff here at Third Eye. And, having him tackling the widescreen awesomeness of the Ultimate Universe’s very own AVENGERS team… is well.. pretty damn cool.
This has been the best run of the ULTIMATES we’ve read since the MILLAR / HITCH days, and if you’re digging the fresh new approach of the other recently relaunched ULTIMATE titles like ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and ULTIMATE X-MEN, you’ll love what Hickman’s done with THE ULTIMATES.
This week’s #4 gives us the official unveiling of the Ultimates roster, and their official return. Now, the question is can they stop a threat more powerful than the gods? With the world on the brink of destruction, how can Nick Fury stop this unimaginable threat?
Missed 1-3? We’ve got copies of each in stock to catch you up to this week’s #4.

HAUNT #19 kicks off a brand new direction, and a brand new creative team for ROBERT KIRKMAN and TODD MCFARLANE’S supernatural charged hero.. and it’s AWESOME. Like, game-changing awesome.

Don’t let this one pass you by, as it will be one of the most talked about new IMAGE books of 2011

¬†We’ve been big fans of Kirkman and McFarlane’s HAUNT, but I have to admit, I was starting to worry about the run had left to go once the two left… well, folks, IT’S FREAKIN’ BETTER THAN IT WAS BEFORE. I’m serious. Joe Casey (BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER) and NATHAN FOX (BLUE ESTATE) deliver some next level stuff here with their new direction for the book.

In just one issue, they not only make a PERFECT jumping on point for new readers not already following HAUNT, but they also unleash a category 5 tornado of shockingly visceral, brutally unpredictable comics. While previous issues of HAUNT weren’t for the faint of heart, #19….. is insane.

In Casey’s own words: it’s time to scare the **** out of people. And, that’s a good mandate to have on a book like HAUNT.

I don’t want to ruin the surprises, but folks, whether you’re already reading HAUNT, or you haven’t given it a shot yet, and are a fan of the darker superhero genre… try this one out on Wednesday. You’re gonna be stoked.
