Why HELLBOY? Find out why HELLBOY is one of our favorites at Third Eye!

We’re huge, huge fans of Mike Mignola’s HELLBOY, and the world he’s created with the MIGNOLAVERSE.
In fact, we’re so darn pumped about Mignola’s HELLBOY that we’ve put together this Third Eye Guide to help introduce you to one of comics most epic, and most endearing universes.
With a character like HELLBOY who’s been around for 25 years — it can be a little intimidating as to where to start; but, fear not, Third Eye Faithful, your pals at Third Eye have made it easy for you to get into the world of HELLBOY!
Why do we love HELLBOY so much? It’s essentially everything that’s amazing about comics, and then some. Take the raw energy of comic greats like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and more, and blend it with a pulp novel-style approach reminiscent of INDIANA JONES, and then throw in a whole lotta supernatural folklore and BAM! You’ve got HELLBOY!
We love the blending of actual supernatural myth and folklore with modern-day science fiction, dark humor, and hard-hitting pulp fiction awesomeness!
So, read on, Third Eye Faithful, and find out where you can get started with HELLBOY!

Start with the HELLBOY Omnibus Editions – chronologically collecting every HELLBOY story in the intended reading order!

Dark Horse has done an amazing job of releasing the entire HELLBOY saga in gorgeous OMNIBUS editions, which reprint everything in the reading order it was intended to be read in.
You can begin with HELLBOY OMNIBUS VOL.1 SEED OF DESTRUCTION, which begins with over 300 pages of HELLBOY goodness!
For the first time, Hellboy’s complete story is presented in chronological order for the ultimate reading experience.
The story jumps from Hellboy’s mysterious World War II origin to his 1994 confrontation with the man who summoned him to earth, and the earliest signs of the plague of frogs.
Avoiding his supposed fate as the herald of the end of the world, Hellboy continues with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, fighting alongside Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and drafting Roger Homunculus into his own ill-fated service with the B.P.R.D.
This 368-page volume covers Hellboy’s adventures published from 1994 to 1997, reprinting Seed of Destruction, Wake the Devil, and “Wolves of St August,” “The Chained Coffin,” and “Almost Colossus,” from The Chained Coffin and The Right Hand of Doom.
After that, you can dive into Hellboy Omnibus VOL.2 Strange Places, with a 416-page volume that covers Hellboy’s adventures from 1998 to 2005, reprinting Conqueror Worm, Strange Places, Into the Silent Sea, and “The Right Hand of Doom,” “Box Full of Evil,” and “Being Human” from The Right Hand of Doom and B.P.R.D.: Being Human.
And, from there the saga continues in the pages of Hellboy Omnibus VOL.3, which is the basis for the upcoming feature film Hellboy: The Rise of the Blood Queen!
Terrible powers determined to kill Hellboy force him strike a deal with the Russian witch, the Baba Yaga, and to confront the truth about his destiny.
The human race hangs in the balance, as well as King Arthur’s sword Excalibur, in a story that wipes England off the map and sets in motion the end of the world…
Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo’s complete trilogy is collected for the first time in this 512-page volume, reprinting Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury, and the short story “The Mole.”
The four-volume Hellboy Omnibus series along with the two volumes of The Complete Short Stories collect all of Mignola’s award-winning Hellboy stories in chronological order for a definitive reading experience.
And, then finally, the Hellboy Omnibus collection wraps with volume 4, with the most ambitious chapter, Hellboy in Hell, collected in its entirety-all written and drawn by Mike Mignola.
Hellboy is cast into Hell, where familiar faces reveal secrets of his origins, and previously unknown family members come forward. Hellboy forever alters the face of Hell, giving new significance to his role of Beast of the Apocalypse.
While featuring big answers and one of the most momentous choices Hellboy’s ever made, Hellboy in Hell also offers a return to the simplest and best Hellboy stories, as Hellboy roams a unique world only Mignola could present, filled with strange and magical encounters rich with the power of folklore and myth.
The Hellboy Omnibus series collects Hellboy stories in chronological order for a definitive reading experience.

Wanna dip into other parts of the MIGNOLAVERSE? Here’s Our Top 5 Of the Best NON-HELLBOY HELLBOY-VERSE graphic novels

In addition to the awesomeness that is HELLBOY, there’s an entire universe that HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola has built around the mythology of HELLBOY, and with it, a ton of great stories.
We’ve spotlighted our TOP 5 MIGNOLAVERSE reads that give you a nice broad overview of the various NOT HELLBOY – but still in the world of HELLBOY – graphic novels from Mignola and his insanely talented collaborators!

1. BPRD HELL ON EARTH HC VOL.1 – There’s a TON of great BPRD graphic novels (and heck, we may even talk about a few more of them here on this list!), but our personal favorites are the HELL ON EARTH series, which delivers some of the best darn BPRD goodness around!

In HELL ON EARTH, the plague of frogs has ended, but earth will never be the same, and the fractured B.P.R.D. struggles to battle dangerous monsters and humans alike, from a trailer-park cult to a Russian town ravaged by a zombie-like virus.
This is a fantastic place for anyone who’s been curious about the BPRD stuff to give the series a try!

2. Abe Sapien VOL.1 THE DROWNING –  Who doesn’t love Abe Sapien? Seriously — one of the best characters in the HELLBOY mythos, and if you’ve ever been curious where to start — this is it!
A century ago, paranormal investigator Edward Gray fought and destroyed a powerful warlock off the coast of the island of Saint-Sébastien. In the early 1980s, the B.P.R.D.’s newest agent was sent to retrieve the warlock’s remains. But Abe Sapien is ill prepared for the dark forces that block his way.
Written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and featuring the haunting art of Jason Shawn Alexander (Damn Nation, The Secret, The Escapists), Abe Sapien: The Drowning is the story of Hellboy and B.P.R.D. mainstay Abe Sapien’s first solo adventure. Collects Abe Sapien: The Drowning #1-5.

3. RASPUTIN: THE VOICE OF THE DRAGON TP –  Obviously, one of the most iconic of the HELLBOY bad guys is the infamous RASPUTIN, and when Mignola told a story that focused on him — it turned out to be one of our favorites!
Hellboy’s future guardian Trevor Bruttenholm, working for Britain’s Military Intelligence, uncovers a collection of messages.
The messages throw him into a world of animated corpses, deadly mystics, and Nazi agents.
The treacherous journey leads him face to face with the man who will bring Hellboy to Earth-Rasputin! Collects Rasputin: Voice of the Dragon #1-#5.

4. HELLBOY AND THE BPRD: 1954 TP –  Wanna get a look at the early adventures of HELLBOY? The HELLBOY and the BPRD mini-series are perfect for that, and 1954 is one of our favorites!
No longer a rookie, Hellboy joins other Bureau agents in a series of far-flung mysteries that take them searching for yetis terrorizing an Arctic research team, into the American suburbs where a family is haunted by a phantom monkey, and to a Hong Kong showdown with demons drawn to a Chinese artifact.
iZombie co-creator Chris Roberson teams with Mike Mignola and a group of artists to uncover the horror and intrigue of a growing occult Cold War. Mignola also reunites with legendary artist Richard Corben for the short story “The Mirror.”
Collects Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1954 #1-#5 and “Hellboy: The Mirror” from Free Comic Book Day 2016.

5. FRANKEINSTEIN UNDERGROUND –  And, of course, there’s so many corners of the Mignolaverse, we wanted to give you a taste of something a little further removed from the HELLBOY mythos – but still existing in the same world — and FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND is perfect for that!
After a fight with Hellboy, Frankenstein’s monster escapes the terrible Mexican laboratory where he was imprisoned and discovers strange creatures beneath the desert, where he’ll learn some of the greatest secrets of the mystical world in the strangest Hellboy spinoff yet!
Collects Frankenstein Underground #1-#5.
