The Biggest Heroes of the Marvel Universe Must Unite to Take on an All New Threat in EMPYRE!

Third Eye Faithful, you know us: we’re all long-time Marvel Zombies, and we tend to dig on just about everything that Marvel has been doing over the last couple of years — and, their latest must-read, EMPYRE, is no exception to that!

In EMPYRE, it’s the return of the Celestial Messiah to the Blue Area of the Moon sets off a new chapter in the Kree/Skrull War—only this time, it’s a Kree/Skrull Alliance aimed directly at Earth, and only the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and more of Earth’s heroes stand in their way.

We know that for some of you, the lineage of the Kree and the Skrull may not resonate the way it does for others, but we’re telling you right now: this is some big deal, killer stuff steeped in Marvel history, but done in a way that’s easy to jump into for new fans, or fans who may not have read the original KREE SKRULL WAR!

What’s the scoop on EMPYRE?

The Kree and the Skrulls have united under a new emperor – and their war fleet is on a collision course for our world.

On the moon, the Avengers are ready to strike with the full power of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Approaching from outer space, the Fantastic Four are seeking a diplomatic solution.

If the two teams can’t work together to save the day, things can only get worse…

Essentially: EMPYRE takes the paranoid space politics of the ’00s remake for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and blends them with the bigger-than-life superhero awesomeness of the MARVEL UNIVERSE to tell a uniquely cosmic story in the modern day.

Calling back to some of the most iconic moments in Marvel history, while casting a spotlight on long-time favorite characters, as well as ones who’ve been out of the picture for a while, EMPYRE is shaping up to deliver an incredibly fun Marvel spring event, and we cannot wait to dig into it!

EMPYRE is built on the richest history the Marvel U has to offer — here’s why you gotta show love to the KREE/SKRULL WAR and why it’s important!

One of the biggest Marvel storylines, quite possibly something that would be on the level of DC’s CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS (maybe not so much in the MULTIVERSE aspect, but in terms of importance to the continuity of Marvel) is THE KREE / SKRULL WAR!

This was really the first “event” storyline Marvel did, as it took their biggest heroes, and set them against an intergalactic stage for a story that was nearly as big as the Marvel U itself!

A conflict of star-spanning proportions – with Earth caught in the crossfire! Those eternal intergalactic enemies, the merciless Kree and the shape-changing Skrulls, have gone to war – and our planet is situated on the front lines!

Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes bring about an end to the fighting before humanity becomes a casualty of war?

And what good are even a dozen super-powered champions against the vast military machines of two of the great empires of the cosmos?

The key to victory lies with the expatriate Kree Captain Mar-Vell – and his human host, honorary Avenger Rick Jones!

Featuring the trend-setting artwork of Neal Adams, the Kree/Skrull War is universally acknowledged as one of the finest and most important sagas in the Marvel canon. Guest-starring the Fantastic Four, Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. and more!

So many major parts of Marvel as we know it sprung out of the KREE / SKRULL WAR, ranging from the iconic CAPTAIN MARVEL, and the lineage that brought us the Captain Marvel we all know and love today with Carol Danvers, to the Skrulls, who’ve become a bigger and bigger fixture in both the Marvel Universe AND the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.

If you’ve never read the KREE / SKRULL WAR, we’re telling you right now: it’s worth picking up that trade paperback, and seeing just how much of it provides the source material for much of what we know about Marvel today.

And, then bringing it full circle to the modern day, which is kind of neat about Empyre: it bridges Marvel past with Marvel present, and builds a pretty seamless kind of continuity, we’ve got one of the main characters in EMPYRE: HULKLING.

One of the stars of the cult favorite YOUNG AVENGERS (from DIE & ONCE AND FUTURE writer Kieron Gillen, and then prior to that, the incredible YOUNG AVENGERS stuff by Allan Heinberg & Jimmy Cheung), Hulkling, takes center-stage in EMPYRE — the half-Skrull / half-Kree character has taken his place leading a unified force of the Skrull and Kree, and fulfilling the destiny it was said he was to fulfill: to conquer Earth with a unified Kree-Skrull army.

Third Eye Faithful, we’re telling you right now: EMPYRE is set to be one of the most exciting things to hit the Marvel Universe in 2020, and we cannot wait until you see some of the surprises that await in this one.

In the meantime, we’ve put together a handy checklist to help you keep track of all the EMPYRE reads!
