Our Top 5 Graphic Novels to Read Before You See Infinity War

Hey Third Eye Faithful!

We know you’re all about all things INFINITY WAR, ’cause lets face it: it looks INCREDIBLE, and c’mon: this is the Marvel movie that all the MCU stuff has been building to for nearly a decade!

So, to help you get in the know before you see INFINITY WAR (trust us, you’re gonna wanna know about the Black Order before you meet ’em in the film!) – we’ve put together our TOP 5 Graphic Novels to read before you see INFINITY WAR!

1. THE NUMBER ONE GRAPHIC NOVEL YOU HAVE TO READ BEFORE SEEING INFINITY WAR: INFINITY GAUNTLET

The granddaddy of ’em all – INFINITY GAUNTLET is THE #1 source of inspiration for the INFINITY WAR film, and while Hickman’s INFINITY is probably a much better read in terms of getting a feel for the direct influences on the story of the film – INFINITY GAUNTLET is the core of INFINITY WAR, by far.

This is where THANOS really came into his own, and became a major player. In addition to the book that made the Mad Titan the man he is today, INFINITY GAUNTLET also pretty much set the template for what a big, cosmic Marvel storyline should and could be.

Highly recommended, this classic still holds up as an incredible read, and should be in every comic fan’s library!

In INFINITY GAUNTLET, it’s the Avengers, the New Warriors, the X-Men and more against the omnipotent Eternal, Thanos!

The Mad Titan has become the most powerful being in the universe, and enslavement or destruction may be the only choices he gives it!

The successive Starlin sagas that shook space and time start here!

2. THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON THE PLOT OF INFINITY WAR: INFINITY

This is probably the most direct influence on the INFINITY WAR plot, and many of the major characters you’ll meet for the 1st time (like those rad bad guys in the Black Order) are introduced in this epic saga by one of the most talented comic writers working today.

In Jonathan Hickman’s INFINITY, to save the world from ever-greater dangers, the Avengers got bigger.

Yet when the oldest race in the universe marks Earth for destruction, it’s time for Captain America to think grander still.

As the most powerful Avengers team ever assembled heads into space to join an intergalactic alliance against the ancient Builders, an old enemy deems their home unprotected.

Thanos, the Mad Titan, unleashes his forces on Earth in the latest chapter of his endless quest for death.

But even a world without Avengers has its defenders.

Among them, the secret cabal of history-shapers known as the Illuminati – a group riven with internal conflict already confronting another planet-ending crisis.

As Earth’s Mightiest Heroes wage war on multiple fronts, their battle for Infinity threatens to descend into Inhumanity.

3. THE BEST PLACE TO START READING THANOS: THANOS VOL.1 THANOS RETURNS

There’s a bunch of great THANOS stories (seriously, we had a hard time narrowing it down to 5!), but Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato’s epic THANOS series that began with THANOS RETURNS (and is continuing now with the equally epic THANOS WINS), is one of the best modern places to get into the MAD TITAN!

In THANOS VOL.1 THANOS RETURNS, Thanos, possibly the most diabolical individual in the Marvel Universe, is back – and he’s out for vengeance on all who would oppose him!

Unfortunately for the Mad Titan, he’s also heading for an unexpected reckoning – with his family.

Take an ongoing walk on the dark side of the galaxy, and follow the deadly trail of destruction left in Thanos’ wake! He is pure evil.

He is unstoppable. And it’s time for someone – anyone – to take him down.

Will it be the Shi’ar Imperial Guard?

That’s the entire Imperial Guard. Time to call in the reinforcements!

Meanwhile, Thanos’ son Thane is out there, making plans.

When Thanos murdered all his other offspring, only Thane was spared – but it wasn’t out of love.

And when the father/son reunion happens, it won’t be a happy one. Collecting THANOS (2016) #1-6.

4. VISION IS GONNA BE A BIG DEAL – TRUST US, SO YOU BETTER READ: VISION VOL.1 LITTLE WORSE THAN MAN

So, with an Infinity Gem embedded in his forehead — Vision is kind of a big deal in Thanos’s mad quest to collect all the Infinity Gems.

As such, we’re probably gonna be seeing a lot of cool Vision stuff, and hey’ that’s great because we freakin’ LOVE Vision!

Plus: we can’t resist an opportunity to share with you one of our favorite graphic novels of the lat few years: Tom King’s (BATMAN, MISTER MIRACLE) Vision!

In VISION VOL.1 LITTLE WORSE THAN MAN, we’re given the most unique and fascinating insight into the character of The Vision we’ve ever seen, Third Eye Faithful, and if you’ve never read it – now is the time!

The Vision wants to be human, and what’s more human than family?

So he heads back to the beginning, to the laboratory where Ultron created him and molded him into a weapon.

The place where he first rebelled against his given destiny, and imagined he could be more – that he could be a man.

There, he builds them. A wife, Virginia. Two teenage twins, Viv and Vin.

They look like him. They have his powers. They share his grandest ambition (or is that obsession?): the unrelenting need to be ordinary.

Behold the Visions!

They’re the family next door, and they have the power to kill us all. What could possibly go wrong?

Artificial hearts will be broken, bodies will not stay buried, the truth will not remain hidden, and the Vision will never be the same. Collecting VISION (2015) #1-6.

5. WE’RE NOT 100% SHE’S GONNA BE IN INFINITY WAR, BUT WE’RE PRETTY DARN SURE SHE MIGHT: CAPTAIN MARVEL EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HERO TP VOL.1

OK, so we’re not actually 100% positive Carol Danvers is gonna be in INFINITY WAR. We have a pretty darn strong suspicion she’s gonna surprise us and pop up – maybe in a post-credits scene?

We’re not positive, but hey – we dig the character so much, we wanted to get you in on the ground floor early of why Captain Marvel is awesome, and there’s no better place to start than with CAPTAIN MARVEL EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HERO TP VOL.1!

Featuring the incredibly iconic KELLY SUE DECONNICK run on the character, in this series Carol Danvers has a new codename and is determined to prove shes the best of the best! She’s forging a new future for herself as Captain Marvel, but finds she still can’t walk away from a challenge from her past!

It’s a firefight in the sky as the Banshee Squadron makes its debut – but who are the Prowlers, and where has Carol seen them before?

Witness her in blazing battlefield action that just may change the course of history!

Then, the Avengers’ new Captain Marvel meets their old one: Monica Rambeau!

But what’s Monica’s problem? And can they resolve it before a threat from the ocean depths attacks? Meanwhile, something is weakening Carol’s powers, threatening to leave the ace pilot grounded.

Will her claim to the title of Earth’s Mightiest Hero be short-lived? Collecting CAPTAIN MARVEL (2012) #1-12.
