DC ZERO MONTH CONTINUES: BATMAN #0 by SCOTT SNYDER & GREG CAPULLO LEADS THE WAY, TELLING THE ORIGINS OF BATMAN, THE BATCAVE, THE JOKER, AND MORE!

BATMAN, I think, is probably my absolute favorite monthly superhero comic right now. Seriously. This is it. This is the number one capes and tights book I look forward to the most, and it continues to be so with this week’s BATMAN #0 from the same creative team that brought us the COURT OF OWLS, SCOTT SNYDER and GREG CAPULLO.

Now, as we gear up for the huge DEATH OF THE FAMILY story arc in OCTOBER featuring THE JOKER, Snyder and Capullo deliver a very special ZERO issue of BATMAN which fleshes out the full mythology of the character in the NEW 52. Everything that surrounds Batman’s earliest days, the costume, the cave, the car, the gadgets, and yes, the Joker, have their stories told here.

This issue also serves as a crucial bridge from BATMAN #12 to the upcoming BATMAN #13, and is a must-read piece of the puzzle in Snyder and Capullo’s run!

You guys have heard us rant, and rave for quite some time now about how much we enjoy Snyder & Capullo’s work on BATMAN, but seriously, if you’re STILL not reading what is one of the best modern comics being published right now: jump on board with this Wednesday’s #0.

Not only is this a great read for any of you already following the series, but it’s a fantastic spot to jump on board what has quickly become nearly everyone’s favorite comic.

Snyder and Capullo’s work on BATMAN conjures up the strongest elements of the best BATMAN runs, stuff like BATMAN HUSH, Frank Miller’s BATMAN YEAR ONE, and THE LONG HALLOWEEN all come to mind when we think about Snyder and Capullo’s work on BATMAN here.

Wanna go back and start with issue #1? We’ve got issues 1-12 in stock now to catch you up for this week’s #0, or you can grab the first hardcover, collecting issues 1-7 in it and then jump onto the singles from there.

Either way: get into this series!

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #11 – The biggest issue in the AvX Series Arrives this Wednesday!

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN continues to be the best blockbuster event story that Marvel has delivered in quite some time, and this week’s issue #11 is so crucial… so vital… we can’t even talk about it.

Seriously, this is a big one, and all we can say is: get to the shop on Wednesday and read it before the reviews start making their way out onto the web.

I’m not going to talk too much about what goes down in AvX #11, so I’ll just give a brief rundown of what’s been going down thus far for those of you who haven’t yet jumped on board.

It all starts with the Phoenix making it’s way back to Earth, and an increasingly militant Cyclops embracing it’s arrival. From there, the Avengers and the X-Men find themselves in a head-to-head war for the fate of the planet itself, as Cyclops truly believes he’s doing what is necessary for mutants to survive and thrive, while the Avengers feel that the Phoenix will doom the entire planet as a whole.

And, then, it gets crazy. The battles are epic. The twists and turns of the plot are incredible. And, the sides that some characters who share allegiances between the two teams, take, are off-the-chain.

AvX is also the set-up for the big MARVEL NOW launch, and is the perfect place to jump on board and get prepared for MARVEL NOW.

CROSSED: WISH YOU WERE HERE TRADE PAPERBACK — The definitive survival horror series continues this Wednesday with CROSSED: WISH YOU WERE HERE

The next edition of CROSSED arrives this Wednesday in graphic novel, and holy crap, is it violent!

This actually may be our favorite run of CROSSED yet since the original 10-issue series. Newcomer Si Spurrier brings a vicious, morbid edge to this book which really cements it’s reputation as THE comic book equivalent of all those late, great ’80s death metal albums your older brother would leave lying around.

This tale of the CROSSED epidemic, a disease that infects normal human beings with a desire to be pure evil, and inflict as much pain and suffering as they can, focuses on a writer who witnessed the downfall of London, and now finds himself in the midst of a new community, a new start, on a barren island off the Scottish coast.

Pretending, just for a while, that he’s safe, that he’s useful… that he has a future. It won’t last. There’s no sanctuary. No fighting back. No hope. There’s only the Crossed.

The thing that makes the CROSSED stories so damn vicious, and entertaining and frightening, is that those infected still retain their knowledge of how to do every day things. So, basically, imagine that zombie horde knowing how to trick you into opening the doors to your home, or knowing how to load and fire automatic weapons.

If you’re all caught up on your WALKING DEAD, and are in need of something just as disturbing to fill that void, then CROSSED is a great next step. The storytelling is every bit as strong, and the shocking twists and turns are every bit as good. It’s just a whole lot gorier.

Snag yourself a copy of CROSSED: WISH YOU WERE HERE this Wednesday, and get on board!

DC ZERO MONTH: TEAM 7 #0 — A BRAND NEW ’52′ TITLE LAUNCHES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH TEAM 7, AND WE’RE HAVING WRITER JUSTIN JORDAN (STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE) IN-STORE ON SATURDAY 9/15 TO SIGN COPIES OF IT!

We are so pumped about the new TEAM 7 series from DC, and it’s for two major reasons: #1: the concept of the book sounds great, and it reads fantastic. #2: it’s written by one of the fastest rising stars in comics, JUSTIN JORDAN, the co-creator of last year’s IMAGE hit STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE.

This is one of those vital DC New 52 titles ,like JUSTICE LEAGUE, which is set in the past, and builds the foundations of the NEW 52 Universe.

In TEAM 7 #0, threats of the entire DC Universe collide in this new series set in the early days of The New 52. As Superman first emerges, so too does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Dinah Lance aka the Black Canary, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash aka Grifter, and the one and only Slade Wilson aka DEATHSTROKE are TEAM 7 — and their story changes everything we know about the NEW 52 and the origins of iconic characters like DEATHSTROKE and the BLACK CANARY.

Justin Jordan is known for delivering an ass-kicker of a good read, and from what we’re seeing in TEAM 7, he’s set to kick out the jams with this one being one of the most kick-ass, in-your-face, knock-down, drag out titles in the DC line-up.

Just think back to how crazy he got with his work on LUTHER STRODE, and now imagine that applied to the earliest days of the NEW 52.

The artwork on this one? Out of sight. Jesus Merino delivers a brisk, fast, and frenetic approach that combines the energy of modern comics and the traditional sleekness of artists like IVAN REIS and JIM LEE.

PLUS: You can snag your copy this week, and then come back on Saturday to get it signed by JUSTIN JORDAN himself at our special launch signing party for TEAM 7! We’re pretty sure he’ll sign your Luther Strode stuff too. ;)

DR. STRANGE SEASON ONE HC — Greg Pak and Emma Rios deliver one of the best modern Doctor Strange esries we’ve seen!

Marvel has really been kicking out the jams with their SEASON ONE graphic novels that tell modernized, new spins on the origins of their most iconic characters.

There’s never enough good Doctor Strange stories, and we feel that the character is so darn cool, that he deserves more.

So, when we saw this pop up on our shipping list this week, well, you could say we got more than a little excited about it.

Part Indiana Jones, part Lord of the Rings, this new tale goes into the early days of Doctor Stephen Strange. We’re shown how a selfish, arrogant surgeon collided with a hot-headed martial artist to become the greatest team the mystic arts have ever seen.

Emma Rios’s artwork is PERFECT for this, and brings a very cool, very psychedelic old school Dr. Strange feel to the series, and we are so pumped to have a kick-ass Doctor Strange book to turn you guys onto now when you’re looking for some Eye of Agamotto awesomeness.

STUMPTOWN #1 DELIVERS BAD-ASS MODERN DAY CRIME NOIR BOUNTY HUNTING GOODNESS FROM THE WRITER BEHIND “QUEEN & COUNTRY”, “THE QUESTION” and “BATWOMAN: ELEGY”!

Greg Rucka is one of the best go-tos for good crime-driven comics. Right up there with Ed Brubaker, Rucka has done fantastic runs on gritty series like GOTHAM CENTRAL, BATWOMAN: ELEGY, and QUEEN AND COUNTRY, and now, he returns with the awesomeness that is STUMPTOWN.

When Mim Bracca, guitar player for the Portland-based bar band Tailhook, returns home from a long tour, she finds not everything made it back with her. Can the one and only P.I Dex Parios track down her missing baby?

The plot synopsis may not give you much to go on here, Third Eye Faithful, but trust us when we tell you that this is crime comics at their best. Incredible artwork courtesy of Matthew Southworth, and a fantastic story from Greg Rucka makes STUMPTOWN the kind of must-read comic goodness that gets us excited on Wednesday mornings, Third Eye Faithful!

DC ZERO MONTH: SUICIDE SQUAD #0 – The formation of the SUICIDE SQUAD, and Harley Quinn’s earliest days REVEALED!

We know a ton of you have been itching to jump on board with SUICIDE SQUAD for the very same reason why we were so pumped about this NEW 52 title: it’s essentially a team book of super-villains starring fan-favorite HARLEY QUINN. And, yes, it totally kicks ass. I mean, who doesn’t love Harley?

This Zero month issue shows just what happens to cause the formation of the Suicide Squad, and what happened during the days of TEAM 7 that made Amanda Waller into the woman she is today.

A stellar jumping on point for anyone who’s been looking to get into this killer title, we recommend snagging a copy. I mean, how can you say no to a monthly dose of Harley Quinn?

THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #6 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, CONTINUING JONATHAN HICKMAN’S MINDBENDINGLY AWESOME HISTORICAL SCI-FI SERIES!

WANNA JUMP ON ? GRAB THE FIRST TRADE COLLECTING 1-5 & ISSUE #6 THIS WEDNESDAY

Manhattan Projects has been one of our favorite new series of 2012 from IMAGE, and that’s saying something, considering all the great new reads that’ve been coming out of Image this year.

In this week’s MANHATTAN PROJECTS #6, we learn that while the Americans have progressively built the Manhattan Projects into massive success and thrust the west into future dominance, on the other side of the world the cold war rages on. Find out the secret history of the Russian science machine in this Wednesday’s MANHATTAN PROJECTS #6!

What’s the scoop on MANHATTAN PROJECTS? We’re shown an alternate history where what if the research and development department created to produce the first atomic bomb was really just a front for a series of other, more unusual, programs? Doorways to other dimensions, alien armies, and more, all weave fiction into the real-deal historical lives of figures like Albert Einstein, Martin Oppenheimer, and more.

Highly recommended, Third Eye Faithful, get into this one this week!

DC ZERO MONTH: BATMAN AND ROBIN #0 SHOWCASES THE ORIGINS OF DAMIAN, AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS MOTHER, TALIA!

BATMAN AND ROBIN has really been one of the true sleeper hits of the DC NEW 52, and we really cannot get enough of it. While DETECTIVE COMICS and Snyder’s BATMAN dominate the stands, we gotta tell you BATMAN AND ROBIN ranks right up there with them.

Gleason’s art is always on point, and brings a very dynamic, and exciting look to the book, and Tomasi’s writing compliments the art perfectly.

This special #0 issue is a great spot to jump on board the kick-ass series, and find out why so many people are digging this one.

Plus: it’s the origins of Damian, and the relationship he has with his mother, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, TALIA.

A fantastic read, and one of our favorite ZERO issues this week, snag yourself a copy this Wednesday!

HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #2 DELIVERS THE SECOND KICK-ASS ISSUE OF THIS MODERN, NEW SPIN ON THE ’80s CLASSIC!

DC Comics’s new spin on HE-MAN is pretty freakin’ awesome. It brings a very cool, very modern edge to the world of Eternia, and it’s villains, while keeping true to the aesthetic and otherworldly sword-and-sorcery meets Star Wars kinda vibe of the old HE-MAN stuff.

In issue #2, Skeletor releases Trapjaw, and the rest of his crew to destroy Adam as he attempts to recover Teela and Man-At-Arms!

A retro blast from the past, the new HE-MAN comic kicks ass, and we highly recommend getting into it.

Wanna jump on board? We’ve got issues 1 in stock now to catch you up for Wednesday’s #2.

DC ZERO MONTH: BATGIRL #0 — HOW DID BARBARA GORDON REGAIN HER ABILITY TO WALK AND BECOME BATGIRL IN THE DC NEW 52? IT’S FINALLY REVEALED HERE!

One of the biggest changes in the NEW 52, and one of the most controversial storyline decisions was the transition of Barbara Gordon from Oracle to Batgirl.

DC, after promising for a year to eventually reveal what happened, finally goes into detail about the transformation that Barbara makes to become Batgirl, as well as the origins of her shocking injury and her inspiring drive to recover and walk again!

BATGIRL has been another sleeper in the NEW52, and has been consistently kick-ass. Mostly due in part to the super-talented writing of GAIL SIMONE (BIRDS OF PREY), and with this week’s issue #0 featuring art by the one and only Ed Benes (a frequent collaborator with Simone on BIRDS OF PREY back in the day), this is a MUST-READ AND a great jumping on point for the series!

BUCKO GRAPHIC NOVEL DELIVERS A WILD, MODERN NOIR HUMOR IN THE VEIN OF CHEW THAT RUNS THE GAMUT OF STEAMPUNK MAKERS, JUGGALOS, SUICIDEGIRLS, AND MORE!

After discovering a dead body in an office bathroom, hungover job interviewee Rich “Bucko” Richardson becomes suspected of the murder. What he thinks is a quest to find the real killer turns into a weeklong romp through the wilds of Portland, Oregon, complete with bike-mounted cover bands, steampunk Makers, Juggalos, SuicideGirls, meth heads, so much absinthe, and an entire city made of books.

Seriously. This is a quirky, modern murder noir that conjures up the same kind of energy and fun as CHEW, and is a blast to read.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: THE COMEDIAN #3 — ONE OF OUR FAVORITES OF THE BEFORE WATCHMEN LINE CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY!

We’ve been totally hooked on all the BEFORE WATCHMEN books, and the COMEDIAN has really stood out as one of our favorites. I mean, we already dig the character, and the creative team they chose for this is PERFECT.

J.G Jones, the artist of WANTED and many others, delivers a perfect look and feel for the book, while writer BRIAN AZZARELLO (100 BULLETS, JOKER) brings the thunder with a gritty story that weaves the origins of the Comedian throughout real historical events.

Wanna get caught up? Not only do we have COMEDIAN 1 & 2 in stock to get you up to speed, but we’ve also got all the other BEFORE WATCHMEN issues in stock and available now.

GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS RETURNS TO PRINT THIS WEDNESDAY! ONE OF THE BEST GREEN ARROW STORIES EVER!

We are so stoked to see that LONGBOW HUNTERS is coming back into print this Wednesday.

Folks, this is one of the best damn GREEN ARROW stories of all time, and I really cannot stress enough how pumped we are to see it coming back into availability.

This was THE book that gave the Green Arrow his dark edge, and really set the tone for much of what was to come in runs like Kevin Smith’s QUIVER.

In THE LONGBOW HUNTERS, Mike Grell shows us an Oliver Queen who’s given up his trick arrows and is settling down with Dinah Lance in Seattle.

But when Ollie’s world collides with one of unspeakable violence, involving the beautiful and mysterious archer known as Shadow, he loses the jokes, the trick arrows, and only brings one thing: razor-sharp arrowheads, and a killer’s instinct.

A modern classic, Third Eye Faithful, GET THIS BOOK!

THE VICTORIES #2 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING THE MOST SHOCKINGLY GRAPHIC TAKE ON SUPERHEROES SINCE “THE BOYS”

We’ve always been big fans of Michael Avon Oeming’s work on POWERS, and other series, but we are really stoked on his new series from DARK HORSE, THE VICTORIES.

With their city drowning in the weird drug known as Float, the Victories bust a major operation, only to have their leader’s mind scanned by an evil psychic who’s got some pretty bad intentions in mind.

But, there’s a lot more going on here than a simple superhero story, this is a graphic, violent, and in-your-face take on superheroes in the real world, and may be the most shockingly graphic take on the genre since Garth Ennis’s THE BOYS.

Snag yourself a copy of #1 (in stock now) and get caught up for this week’s #2.

DC’S JUDAS COIN GRAPHIC NOVEL IS A PERFECT COMPANION TO LAST WEEK’S SHOCKING PHANTOM STRANGER #0

FROM THE LEGENDARY WALT SIMONSON, OF THOR FAME!

We don’t want to go too into detail on last week’s PHANTOM STRANGER, but if you read it, then you know why we’re shouting out the JUDAS COIN graphic novel this week.

This centuries-spanning original graphic novel from legendary writer/artist WALTER SIMONSON of THOR fame shows how one of the silver coins Judas was paid  to betray Jesus has had an impact on the entire DC Universe, with chapters covering cult favorites like The Golden Gladiator, The Viking Prince, Captain Fear, Bat-Lash, and then, even a modern day encounter between TWO-FACE and BATMAN.

A must-read, in terms of the DCU’s historical make-up, this one’s a blast, and I mean, c’mon: it’s Walt Simonson!

THE MASSIVE #4 — BRIAN WOOD’S (DMZ, NORTHLANDERS) POST-APOCALYPTIC TALE OF LAND PIRATES, RESCUE SHIPS, AND MORE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS!

Man, I really can’t get enough of Brian Wood’s incredible new ongoing series, THE MASSIVE, with it’s intense, post-apocalyptic landscape, and the incredible storytelling that Wood brings to it.

Searching for essential supplies in a post-Crash black market, Callum Israel struggles to maintain his moral code in a new world where survival requires working within the gray area. But can this environmentalist’s pacifism survive in a violent world when a ghost from his past as a corporate mercenary resurfaces?

2 thoughts on “This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 9/12/12

  1. Wasn’t Comedian in San Francisco in Silk Spectre last week? Interesting timing of issues…

Also, I’m really digging the slow reveal of some big secret in Minutemen, that was also mentioned in another series.trade-waiting is going to take away these types of nuances.

  2. Yeah, the timing of this. The slow reveal of what’s going down in MINUTEMEN is awesome.

I really feel that the WATCHMEN stuff reads best in serial format, as they’re trying to recapture that same kind of suspense that was in the originals.
