THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 6/16/10

THE FINAL OF THE BIG FOUR AVENGERS BOOKS ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY WITHNEW AVENGERS #1 - AND, IT’S FREAKIN’ AWESOME! ONE OF OUR FAVORITES SO FAR, AND A BIG SURPRISE!
newavengers1

I wasn’t expecting to like this one nearly as much as I did. I expected it to be a good read, but I was very skeptical about where NEW AVENGERS would fit into the grand scheme of things regarding the Avengers line-up of SECRET AVENGERS, AVENGERS, and AVENGERS ACADEMY. Each one of those books had an obvious, and clear direction. However, I wasn’t sure where New Avengers would fit… but after reading, it’s obvious that NEW AVENGERS fills a very cool niche in the line-up of Avengers books. While Secret delivers the dark and gritty covert ops thrills, AVENGERS delivers the big and bold superhero epicness, and Academy shows insight onto the next generation, NEW AVENGERS is THE personality book. This is the one with the heart in it, where you’re enraptured as much by the dialogue and interaction of the characters as you are by the bigger-than-life events happening within. I really, really dug it, and I thought Stuart Immonen’s art looked the best I’ve ever seen on it. When reading this one, I got the same kind of feeling I got from reading the early issues of Bendis’s NEW AVENGERS, and that’s a pretty high compliment, because the early issues of the original run still remain some of the best Marvel books of the previous decade.

Now, why does it work so well? Well, the roster of NEW AVENGERS is more or less a who’s who of Bendis’s favorite characters, and you can tell it. The characterization, and interaction between the characters is some of the best I’ve seen in a superhero comic in a years. Bendis does a fantastic job of keeping you interested, getting you involved, and making these characters seem as familiar as old friends to the reader, while at the same time bringing in a good dose of action, and dynamic storytelling. The fact that he’s paired up with Stuart Immonen (long-time Bendis collaborator on both NEW AVENGERS v.1 and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN) makes the book work even better, as Immonen’s art style clicks perfectly with Bendis’s dialogue and writing. Immonen delivers the facial expressions and body language of the characters that match perfectly with Bendis’s dialogue and characterization.

Okay, but I’m starting to gush here about this book. I was really impressed, and I think that’s why I keep going on about it. Now, onto the fascinating part about these new Avengers books. The Line-up. This one looks to consist of:

LUKE CAGE
WOLVERINE
SPIDER-MAN
THE THING
IRON FIST
JESSICA JONES / JEWEL
MS MARVEL

Out of all the new teams, this seems to be the most in tune with the previous Avengers incarnation. Bendis, throughout the issue, gives good reason for each member’s inclusion, as well as the need and purpose for a second Avengers teams.

Now, as for the overall story, the first issue read fantastic, and it looks like it’s taking things into a very cool direction where a familiar face has fallen prey to a sinister possession. But, at it’s core, this is definitely the character-driven Avengers team, and delivers some classic interplay between the team. I really dug the inclusion of Ben Grimm on the team, and how he’s brought on board. Plus, who doesn’t love Iron Fist? It’s nice to see him back in the picture of things again too after his own series kinda got the axe (which is a shame because it was GREAT).

Final Verdict: All in all, if you’re digging the direction of Marvel right now, and digging the Avengers stuff, I’d recommend trying the first issue, ’cause it’s one of my favorites so far. I’ve gotta give it to Marvel, they’ve been delivering some really good stuff with the Heroic Age, and now is a great time more than ever to hop on board with the Marvel Universe.

CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #2 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY – ARE YOU READING THE MOST ULTRA-VIOLENT SURVIVAL HORROR COMIC IN EXISTENCE? IF NOT, PICK UP #1 THIS WEEK AND FIND OUT WHY THIS IS A HUUUUGE STORE FAVORITE! GARTH ENNIS’S (writer of THE BOYS, and PREACHER) TWISTED WORLD OF SURVIVAL HORROR CONTINUES TO LIVE ON!
crossedfv2
Folks, it doesn’t get anymore brutal than this. The most sickening, disturbing survival horror comic we’ve ever seen returns this week with CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #2. As we saw from the shocking first issue of this one, FAMILY VALUES is every bit as mean and vicious as the first run of CROSSED, and we couldn’t be more happier about that.

Now, this week, we get the second issue of this crazy good series, and we know you guys are as amped about this one as we are. But, for those of you that remain uninitiated into the wonderful world of CROSSED, please allow me to give you the full rundown..

WHAT IS CROSSED? CROSSED is a survival horror comic where a disease turns those infected into pure evil. They’re not quite zombies, because they’re not undead, and they don’t have a need to devour the flesh or brains of the living. But, instead, they’re normal human beings who’ve basically been dosed with a case of some seriously screwed up rabies. But, here’s the kicker, and here’s what REALLY makes CROSSED stand out as a truly disturbing work: they’re still sentient, and they can still plan and reason. See, in zombie stories, or even things like THE CRAZIES or 28 DAYS LATER, the infected are pretty much mindless driven by a sole instinct to do one thing, be it eating brains or whatever. With THE CROSSED, their most primal, most sadistic desires are what drive them, and they WANT to inflict pain, that’s all they care about, and they have the same reasoning and ability to plot and plan that they did when they were living. This makes them VERY dangerous. They have the kind of intelligence to know “hey if we set the house on fire, they’ll have to run outside, and then we can kill them there!” and of course, they’re much more devious than what I can say here.

CROSSED FAMILY VALUES is a brand new series set in the CROSSED universe, and provides a fresh entry into the world of CROSSED. In other words, if you’ve never read CROSSED, you could hop on board with CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #1, and be totally cool. ‘Cause Family Values kicks things off in a new direction, set in a completely different corner of the world that CROSSED was set in. And, folks, it’s fantastic.

If you’re remotely interested in good horror comics, or just plain violent and vicious reads, then you have to check this out. And, please, don’t write this one off as a cheap gross-out book, ’cause IT’S NOT. The writing on both the original 9 issue CROSSED series, and FAMILY VALUES is sharper than a lot of what’s out there. The dialogue is great, the characterization is strong, and you’ll find as many clever plot twists as you do in a top notch series like Y or Walking Dead.

Want to read the original 9 issue CROSSED series, Pick Up the CROSSED Trade Paperback! If you’re loving CROSSED FAMILY VALUES, or if you want to go back and start with the original 9 issue series, we’ve currently got plenty of the CROSSED Trade Paperback in stock here at Third Eye to get you caught up. Pick up a copy this week!

Missed Issue #1 of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES? We’ve still got plenty in stock to catch you up to #2

Final Verdict: If you’re not easily disturbed, then you should be reading CROSSED. No questions asked. This is one of those books that everyone is always anxious to see the next one of!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #634 BEGINS THE GRIM HUNT! ONE OF THE COOLEST SPIDER-MAN STORIES I’VE READ IN A WHILE, TYING BACK TO THE IDEAS IN J.MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI’S RUN!
asmgrimhunt1
One of the best Spider-man stories of all-time is the classic KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT. The story took an underused Spidey villain and made him into one of the most memorable, and terrifying villains to date. The story featured Kraven, who’s sanity has completely gone to pieces due to his inability to capture his ultimate prey: Spider-man, defeats Spider-man, and throws on his costume, roaming New York proving himself worthy of his ultimate adversary’s former activities.

Now, after a big build up through the events of THE GAUNTLET, Marvel is bringing the Kraven family back into the spotlight. See, there’s a whole lineage of Kravens, including his son, as well as Lady Kraven. And, I’ll tell you, I just got done reading the advance of this one, and I REALLY dug it. It’s dark, it’s grim, and it’s one hell of a solid read.

Now, this one is good for many reasons, but one of the obvious is that JOE KELLY is handling the writing duties on it. See, Spidey has had this whole rotating creative team thing going for a bit, and honestly, not all of the guys on that team are that great. However, Joe Kelly, is one of the best, and he writes one of the best Spideys I’ve seen.

There’s some good twists in this one, so I don’t want to reveal too much, but I will say that it looks like this story arc is going to deliver a perfect end point to what began in KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT many, many years ago. Basically, the Kraven Family is hunting “Spiders”, anyone who is a Spider-related/themed character. This means your Madame Webs, your Arachnes, hell, even Kaine gets it pretty bad, and it all ties back into the ideas and elements that J.Michael Straczynski set up in his killer run on Amazing Spider-man. I don’t want to ruin any surprises, but, you’ll be pretty stoked to see what I mean about this.

Anyways, long story short, they’re hunting Spiders, in an attempt to use their blood to fuel the rebirth of their dead father, Kraven the Hunter.

It’s pretty kick-ass, so give it a look this Wednesday!

BRIGHTEST DAY #4 – THE NEW AQUALAD DEBUTS! – BRIGHTEST DAY CONTINUES TO IMPRESS US WEEK AFTER WEEK! Want to get into DC Comics? THIS is the series to read!

brightestday4
Brightest Day has been living up to the hype in a big way. We were really curious about what direction Geoff Johns was going to be taking things back when Blackest Night was wrapping up, but we have to say that we couldn’t have even imagined all the cool stuff that he’s been doing in BRIGHTEST DAY. Geoff Johns pretty much said it would be DCU Rebirth, and he wasn’t kidding. In the fourth issue due out this Wednesday, not only does Johns continue to develop the major plot lines he’s been building for quite some time now, but he’s also introducing the new Aqualad to DC Continuity.

What is BRIGHTEST DAY? Brightest Day is a new DC event that follows up on last year’s smash hit, BLACKEST NIGHT, the writer of BLACKEST NIGHT and GREEN LANTERN, Geoff Johns, is writing. The basis of BRIGHTEST DAY, at it’s core, is DCU: REBIRTH. Basically, in the aftermath of BLACKEST NIGHT, we’re seeing many formerly deceased DC characters being resurrected and given new purpose and place in the DCU. The series serves as an EXCELLENT place to come into the DCU for those of you who’ve been thinking about getting onto a good DC book, but haven’t found the right one yet. The series also picks up on several plot elements and storylines directly from BLACKEST NIGHT, and works as a direct continuation of what Geoff Johns was doing in that incredible series.

Why we love it? Each issue is like a blockbuster movie in 32 pages. Whether it’s the cataclysmic return of the Anti-Monitor, or Aquaman resurrecting undead sealife, and watching in horror as a zombie shark chomps a pirate in half. Compelling, well-written, and with some incredible art, it delivers big-time.

Wanna get caught up on BRIGHTEST DAY? You can jump on with BRIGHTEST DAY #0, and that serves as a fresh spot to come in. We currently have BRIGHTEST DAY #0, #1 (with limited quantities of the free white lantern ring that comes with it), #2 and #3 available at the store to get you caught up. Check out this great series, and find out why we’re so wrapped up in it!

BIRDS OF PREY #2 *BRIGHTEST DAY*SHIPS THIS WEDNESDAY! GAIL SIMONE & ED BENES’S NEW HIT ONGOING SERIES IS AWESOME, ONE OF THE BEST NEW “BRIGHTEST DAY”-RELATED TITLES!
birdsofprey2
The first issue of the new ongoing BIRDS OF PREY series totally knocked us off our feet. I had high hopes for this one, because Gail Simone and Ed Benes did one of the best damn runs on the series I think I’d ever read, but they really stepped up their game and delivered a killer book. I think this is one of my favorites in the line-up of new series that’ve launched under the BRIGHTEST DAY banner. Simone is as good as ever with great characterization of these characters she defined for so long, and some snappy dialogue. Benes is doing some of the best work of his career, and you can definitely tell that BoP is THE book he was meant to draw.

Anyways, this week the second issue of Birds of Prey hits, and after the set-up of the first issue, we’re pretty pumped to see what’s next. For a first issue, Birds of Prey did a fantastic job of introducing the book and the characters to new readers, while at the same time keeping the story interesting and moving forward. Simone is at the top of her game, and even the inclusion of the new blood (Hawk and Dove) works out pretty well. The second issue looks to be continuing the storyline that Simone was introducing towards the tail end of the first issue, especially with a big reveal I don’t want to spoil for those of you who haven’t yet read the first one.

If you missed #1, don’t worry, we still have limited copies of BIRDS OF PREY #1 in stock to get you caught up.

THE SECOND COMING EVENT GETS BETTER AND BETTER, CONTINUING THIS WEEK IN NEW MUTANTS #14 *X-MEN SECOND COMING CHAPTER 11*
newmutants14
I can’t stress how freakin’ good SECOND COMING has been. Marvel has really hit it out of the park with this one, and it’s pretty freakin’ awesome to see the X-MEN back to the high level of quality and critical acclaim that they once were back in the day. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a really good strong X-Men story like this, and now looking ahead to what is on the horizon after SECOND COMING, I really think Marvel is getting the X-Men back on point.

In recent issues of the SECOND COMING, some really cool developments have been happening. In last week’s Chapter 10 (UNCANNY X-MEN #525), we saw some seriously major stuff going down as the Avengers and the FF get involved, and we were given a glimpse at Hope’s mutant power. Fraction did a fantastic job of weaving the mythos and stories of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST into the events of SECOND COMING, as we see Nimrods from that future pouring into the present.

After all the ass-kicking of last week’s UNCANNY X-MEN 525, it looks like things are going to get even crazier in this week’s NEW MUTANTS #14, as the X-Men are looking to enlist the aide of the highly dangerous and highly unpredictable LEGION in battling the Nimrod Sentinels!

If you’re not already reading X-MEN SECOND COMING, clickhere to check out a brief synopsis of what the event is about as well as a full checklist of the event.

JOKER’S ASYLUM DELIVERS MORE TWISTED ONE-SHOT GOODNESS THIS WEEK WITH JOKER’S ASYLUM: HARLEY QUINN and JOKER’S ASYLUM: MAD HATTER
jokersasylumharley
We love when DC dishes out one-shots, and we love it even more when they’re focusing on the Batman Rogues Gallery! Seriously though, this year, the Joker’s Asylum line-up is filled with top notch creative teams telling stories surrounding some of Batman’s most intriguing foes. The concept is pretty simple, each one-shot is narrated by the Joker, telling a special stand-alone story that gives us an inside look into the insanity of the Caped Crusader’s worst enemies.

This week, we’re getting hit with a double whammy of these, and while we mean no disrespect to the Mad Hatter, we think that Miss Quinn takes center stage this week. Yup, everyone’s favorite giggly baddie gets her own chance at the spotlight this week in the Joker’s Asylum: Harley Quinn one-shot. Now, it’s no secret that not only are we big fans here at Third Eye, but we know that you guys are as well. And, this week, we get to see a killer one-shot story that provides some interesting insights into who Harley Quinn is, and what her future in the DCU is centered around. And of course, it’s all narrated by her own Mr. J. The creative team on this one’s sharp, with some outstanding artwork by Joe Quinones.

jokersasylumhatter
Now, we can’t overlook the killer Mad Hatter one-shot hitting this week either. This one features art by the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz, and focuses in on the twisted little hat-obsessed Hatter. The fact that Sienkiewicz is doing the artwork on this one is enough of a draw for me, as his art has been a long-time favorite of mine, and should fit the tone and nature of a one-shot centering around the Mad Hatter perfectly. If anyone can capture a perfect blend of dream-like surreality and nightmarish insanity, it’s Sienkiewicz.

Check out these two kick-ass one-shots this Wednesday at Third Eye!

CRIMINAL v.5 THE SINNERS TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! THE BEST DAMN CRIME COMICS YOU WILL EVER READ. PERIOD.
criminalthesinnerstpb
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’s CRIMINAL series is one of my favorite comics, it’s that simple. They have yet to disappoint me with their perfect blend of pulpy, classic noir stylings and modern day comics storytelling dynamics. Criminal is one of those books that I look forward to so much, I read the damn thing twice when it comes out. And, don’t get me started on how much I enjoy all the cool extras that they chuck into each and every issue.

This week, the 5th graphic novel collecting the most recent CRIMINAL story arc arrives, THE SINNERS. This arc was fantastic, and delivered one of the most compelling Criminal stories I’ve ready yet. Revisiting the character of Volume 2’s LAWLESS, Tracy Lawless, we see where he’s ended up after the events of CRIMINAL v.2. Lawless has found himself working for the very mobster he despised, and set out to kill, after his bad luck in his introductory arc. Now, with wiseguys showing up dead all over town, his boss decides to use Lawless as his guy to figure out who is committing these slayings, since going to the cops is out of the question.

And, just like in all good crime fiction, the ending is inevitable. You know that Tracy Lawless’s fate is sealed, and he’s doomed from the very first chapter of the Sinners. The series wraps us deep into the underworld that Tracy operates in, and the complex sense of morality that surrounds him. The more the story goes on, the more it looks like Tracy may be on a one way ticket to nowhere, and with us knowing that, it makes the story that much poignant.

Just like each slab of CRIMINAL, this is a very nihilistic story. No happy ending. Bleak, pitch black and hopeless, as a good crime noir story should be. And, Sean Phillips manages to deliver the goods on the art once again. Phillips is probably the best guy working in the crime noir style of comics, and I couldn’t imagine CRIMINAL without him, or the colorist who delivers the perfect lighting for the story.

Criminal is fantastic. You can’t go wrong with this series. If you’ve never read any of them before, we recommend starting with CRIMINAL v.1 COWARD, which tells the tale of a bank robber who refuses to use guns, and his unseemly downfall. The beauty of CRIMINAL is how each story links up, but still stands on it’s own. You’ll see a character as the bartender in the first trade paperback, and then in the third trade paperback, you’ll see a story flashing back to the ’70s, focusing on him as a central character. You’ll see characters who are background players in some arcs become major ones in others. It all links up in CRIMINAL, but still manages to keep each story arc a solid stand-alone read.

Okay, I’m done, I’m done. READ CRIMINAL. :)

DC UNIVERSE LEGACIES #2 – THE AWE-INSPIRING HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE CONTINUES TO BE TOLD THIS WEEK IN THIS KILLER NEW SERIES! FEATURING ARTWORK BY ANDY KUBERT, J.H WILLIAMS III, and SCOTT KOLINS!
dculegacies2
DC has been on a roll, with many of the new titles they’ve launched this year really doing well for themselves. DCU Legacies is another one of those titles that really has us impressed, and eager to read the next issue. And, looking at the freakin’ list of artists involved with this issue? Holy crap, dude… it’s a who’s who of awesomeness… you’ve got Andy Kubert, you’ve got J.H Williams III (who’s known for his AMAZING work on Batwoman/Detective Comics), and Scott Kolins. A fantastic line-up for a fantastic book.

This second issue explores the transition of the Mystery Men to the emerging superheroes like the Justice Society of America, and shows us how these groups of yesteryear influenced regular citizens to action, like the Newsboy Legion. Plus, we get a look at the Seven Soldiers of Victory!

What is DCU Legacies? DC Universe Legacies is a 10-issue maxi-series that is literally telling the history of the DC Universe, from the very start of masked vigilantes and mysterymen, like The Sandman, and the original Atom all the way up to the current space-age titans of the Modern Age. And, with continuity in comics getting confusing all the time, it’s pretty awesome that DC is doing this. This is the OFFICIAL continuity and history of the DCU, and helps make sense of some of the stuff they’ve done over the last few years. The first issue kicked off with a bang, giving us a prominent story focusing on the pulp-inspired heroes like Crimson Avenger and the Sandman, and then it also gives us a back-up focusing on the more mystical characters of the Golden Age.

If you already checked out issue #1 of this, we can almost guarantee you’re gonna be checking out issue #2, because the first one was so damn good. If you missed issue #1, we recommend picking it up this week and giving the book a try. It’s really quality quality stuff.

ULTIMATE X #3 HITS THIS WEEK, AND DELIVERS THE THIRD ISSUE IN ONE OF THE BEST NEW ULTIMATE-LINE RELAUNCHES WE’VE SEEN! ART ADAMS is KICKING SOME SERIOUS BUTT ON THIS BOOK!
ultimatex3
Ultimate X has been one of the biggest, and most pleasant surprises in the recent relaunches of the Ultimate books. I don’t know if it’s cause Loeb is working with predominantly all new characters here, or what, but he’s really channeling the same kind of energy he brought to books like the early issues of Superman/Batman way back when it was a must-read. It’s that kind of raw, comic book energy that makes Ultimate X such a fun read, and when you couple that with the incredible work of Art Adams (one of my favorite artists), you’re in for a real treat.

What is Ultimate X? The Ultimate X book is essentially the relaunch of ULTIMATE X-MEN, but with a brand new cast of characters, and a brand new direction. In the first issue, we see Kitty Pryde helping reveal the destiny of Wolverine’s son to him, as well as his true origins. And, then in the second issue, we’re introduced to Karen Grant, a dark haired super-powered woman living in Baltimore, MD,  who is desperately trying to hide her past from the world. And, then we learn that this is Jean Grey, and we’re shown what she’s been up to since Ultimatum. Lots of mystery and intrigue surround Ultimate X, and it looks like this month, we’re going to see another addition to the line-up, and I’m pumped to see what the backstory is on him.

All in all, the Ultimate X book delivers a lot of surprise, and the whole issue by issue mystery thing has been handled very well. Of course, the artwork by Art Adams makes this one stand out even more, and I’d say this is one of the prettiest books on the stands. Adams is that good.

Even if you were disappointed in ULTIMATES 3, don’t let it cause you to overlook ULTIMATE X, ’cause this series is fantastic so far, and stands out as one of the best of the new Ultimates books.

ATLAS #2 *HEROIC AGE* - MARVEL’S CULT FAVORITES, THE AGENTS OF ATLAS, CONTINUE TO DELIVER A KILLER READ THIS MONTH
atlas2
We’re pretty stoked to see the return of Marvel’s AGENTS OF ATLAS. These guys have had a couple previous series, but this one looks like it’s going to be the one that sticks, as it’s off to a fantastic start. Jeff Parker’s quirky and fun take on the more obscure side of the Marvel Universe has had us hooked on these characters for some time now, and with the Heroic Age, it looks like they’re finally getting the limelight they deserve.

What is ATLAS? ATLAS is the new ongoing series featuring the Agents of ATLAS, a team of heroes who originated during Marvel’s Golden Age in the ’50s (hence the ATLAS tag-line). Their first big present day debut was in the 2006 AGENTS OF ATLAS mini-series, and delivered a very cool, super spy-meets-pulp-fiction kind of feel for the characters. The team consists of Namora, Venus, Marvel Boy/The Uranian, Jimmy Woo, Gorilla-Man and more. If you dig stuff like the indie gem ATOMIC ROBO, or pulpier super-hero stuff, then ATLAS is right up your alley. This new ongoing series is a perfect spot to jump aboard, and we still have plenty of issue #1s in stock to get you caught up.

AVATAR PRESS’S FEVRE DREAM #2 by GEORGE R.R MARTIN DELIVERS MORE BLOODY NEW ORLEANS-STYLE VAMPIRE AWESOMENESS!
fevredream2
One of the better Vampire comics we’ve seen recently, GEORGE R.R MARTIN’S FEVRE DREAM delivers a down and dirty, drenched in blood Southern Gothic kind of Vampire tale that kicks ass.

Avatar Press, who delivers us some twisted and amazing books like CROSSED, CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD, CAPTAIN SWING, and GRAVEL, has done a fantastic job of putting out a solid vampire comic.

Fevre Dream is set on the Mississippi River. It features a group of vampires who get into league with a riverboat captain to build the biggest, fanciest, and fastest paddlewheel riverboat on the river: The Fevre Dream. Of course, the Vampires have a plan, and it’s to fill said riverboat with tons of passengers and have themselves an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet, much to the previously mentioned Captain’s dismay.

The first issue set things off with a very creepy, and strong start for a Vampire book. It’s an Avatar series, so you’re definitely going to get all the gratuitous sex and violence you can handle. If you’re into good horror comics, give this one a look this week at Third Eye. We’ve still got limited quantities of issue #2 to get you caught up.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS BLACK CAT #1 – A GRIM HUNT TIE-IN!
blackcat1
In addition to GRIM HUNT kicking off this Wednesday, there’s a companion mini-series featuring everyone’s favorite cat-burglar who’s first name is not Selina, THE BLACK CAT. This limited series ties in with the events of GRIM HUNT, as the latest heist of the Black Cat puts her face to face with the family that’s been terrorizing Spidey and those close to him.

I read the advance of the first issue of this, and I thought it was pretty damn good. It had a very cool, almost retro-psychadelia feel to it. You know, sort of like an updated version of an old school Silver Age Spidey story, but with a lot of teeth to it. Definitely worth checking out, and if you’re a Black Cat fan, this is probably one of the best written characterizations of her I’ve seen.

STAFF PICKS

Steve -  NEMESIS #2 = Just like I was thinking, Millar hooks us hard with issue #2. The first issue of any Millar series is always way quick, but it’s the second one where he gets ya. I loooved NEMESIS #2, and the origin of the character is definitely ANTI-BATMAN.

Trish – SHIELD #2 = Nostradamus, and Leonardo DaVinci who has a superpower of being the “ultimate architect”? this series is too good!

Torma – BATMAN #700 = Awesome story with an awesome cast of artists.. loved the nod to Terry McGinnis and Batman Beyond in there.

Matt – DEADPOOL: WADE WILSONS WAR #1 = Probably the best Deadpool book I’ve read since the original ongoing launched a couple years ago. Funny as hell and a solid story to boot!

And that’s a wrap, folks, we’ll see you guys around the shop this week! Can’t wait to hear what you guys thought of NEMESIS #2 and the whole Batman Beyond revelations in #700!

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 6/9/10

BATMAN #700 *RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE TIE-IN* – GRANT MORRISON PENS THIS EXTRA-SPECIAL DOUBLE-SIZED LANDMARK ISSUE WHICH PAVES THE WAY FOR BRUCE WAYNE’S RETURN! FEATURING ART BY FRANK QUITELY, TONY DANIEL, ANDY KUBERT and new DC SUPERSTAR ADDITION DAVID FINCH! THIRD EYE MUST BUY!
batman700
Okay, this one’s a biggie, and there’s no doubt that it’s going to be one of the hottest books to hit the stands this week here at Third Eye. I’m pretty stoked about this one, myself, considering how huge of a fan I’ve been of both Grant Morrison’s incredible BATMAN AND ROBIN and RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, and this special one-shot issue ties directly into everything Morrison has been doing with the Caped Crusader since day one. And, not only is this one a big deal in regards to the overall storyline of BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE and BATMAN AND ROBIN, but it’s just a plain big deal in general ’cause it’s the 700th issue of BATMAN, folks. That’s a landmark. I mean, think about it for a moment… 700 issues.. that’s about 5 long boxes of one series, dating all the way back to the 30s and 40s. It’s a historic landmark, and from the description of the solicits, Morrison plans on making this one a can’t miss, must-read.

So, what’s the scoop on the story in BATMAN #700?Well, Morrison in an interview has said that this was kind of his send-up to the grand tradition of the over-sized anniversary issue. Basically, he’s set out to pack this issue with so much content, and so much over-the-top Morrison madness, that it stands out as one of the biggest books to drop this summer. Issue #700 is a done-in-one, one-shot story that picks up on important plot threads from Morrison’s previous runs, and his current work with Return of Bruce Wayne. It also sets up more of what’s going on in regards to the Return of Bruce Wayne. It’s broken down into three parts, with three artists each doing a different Batman…. Tony Daniel doing the Batman of the past, Bruce Wayne, Frank Quitely doing Batman and Robin of the present (Dick Grayson and Damian), and Andy Kubert doing Batman of the future, which is Damian. And, then the final part, is David Finch doing the Batman of the far future. Morrison said this one is a whopper of a story, and it took him nearly two months to write this one issue, so he’s really planning on a grand celebration of the 700th issue of Batman.  Not to mention, with a lot of the time-traveling stuff happening within this one, along with a coy little mention in the solicits, we know this one is going to play a part into the bigger scheme of things with the current RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE story arc.

Why This is A Must Read? Well, first off, it’s a double-sized one-shot that serves as a special treat for both those of us already following Morrison’s incredible reinvention of the Batman mythos, and for those of you who haven’t yet picked up on what’s happening with Batman. If you’ve been wanting to try Morrison’s Batman stuff, then this would be a great place to start.

Secondly, look at the roster on this one… Grant Morrison… Frank Quitely.. Tony Daniel.. Andy Kubert.. David Finch! The simple fact that these four superstar artists are together in ONE book is epic enough, but the four of them working together on a mindbender of a story like this written by the master of the craft, Morrison? It’s incredible.

Third, it’s Batman #700, and is a substantial part of comics history. A gorgeous looking issue, a great story, and this one makes a very nice addition to anyone’s collection.

So, whether you’re just jumping into the world of Grant Morrison’s surreal and dark Batman tales, or if you’ve been hooked all along, make sure you don’t miss Batman #700 this Wednesday at Third Eye!

MARK MILLAR & STEVE MCNIVEN’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEMESIS #2 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY CONTINUING THE CREATORS OF “OLD MAN LOGAN” and “KICK-ASS” KILLER “EVIL BATMAN” STORYLINE! THE SICKEST, MOST VIOLENT BOOK YOU’LL READ IN 2010 (that’s not CROSSED =) )
nemesis2
Here’s one we know you’ve all been waiting for. Heck, we’ve been as eager as you have to get our mitts on this one, and really, could you expect any less from a book touting the creative team of OLD MAN LOGAN, MARK MILLAR and STEVE MCNIVEN? I mean, these two juggernauts of comic book awesomeness delivered us probably the best Wolverine story we’ve read in 20 years last year. And, even though we had to wait between each and every issue… each and every issue was more than worth the wait.

Now, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven are delivering the goods all over again on their brand new series NEMESIS, which is on the same creator-owned ICON imprint as KICK-ASS. And, just like KICK-ASS, NEMESIS takes place in it’s own self-contained world and continuity. What’s this mean? Well, basically, Millar can do whatever the hell he wants with this one, folks!

Now, for those of you who may not already be reading NEMESIS, we feel a little introduction is in order, since it’s been a couple months since issue #1 came out.

What is NEMESIS about? At it’s core, NEMESIS is the quintessential “evil Batman” story. Basically, by that, we mean the title character, Nemesis, is a self-made man. He’s in outstanding physical shape. He’s rich as hell. He’s got a genius-level IQ. And, whereas Batman was dedicated to putting fear into the hearts of criminals everywhere… Nemesis is the reverse. He lives to terrorize society at large, in an effort to point out the vanity and flaw “in the system.” Now, we know that Nemesis’s motivations as they’re revealed in the series are going to provide some of the most compelling parts of this story, but for now, he is a pure agent of chaos. What if Batman was the Joker? He’d be NEMESIS.

In issue #1 of NEMESIS, we saw him throw the Tokyo Chief of Police under a speeding bullet train, and in full gory detail, watched as said Chief of Police was ripped to shreds under the train. We watched as Nemesis boarded Airforce One and flew it straight into the heart of Washington, D.C.

And now, in this week’s issue #2 of NEMESIS, we get to see the Chief of Police in Washington, D.C stand up to NEMESIS. But, how can he stop the brutal one-man hurricane of violence and mayhem? Well, that’s what we’re gonna find out.

I loved the first issue of this one, but like most Millar series, the first issue always feels like the 10 minutes prior to the opening credits. It’s not until you get into issue #2 and #3, that you really get the hook of what’s going to make the story cool, and that’s why I cannot wait to read NEMESIS #2 this week. I think that this series is going to rely as much on the portrayal of the D.C Chief of Police as it is the portrayal of NEMESIS, and I think what’s going to really make the book good is we’re going to see Millar building up the DC Chief of Police as a very strong character to go up against NEMESIS.

Essentially, this is Mark Millar doing BATMAN vs. Comissioner Gordon, and I think that’s pretty freakin’ cool.

Plus, it’s got McNiven doing the artwork, and dude, this guy is great. First, CIVIL WAR, then OLD MAN LOGAN, and whenever McNiven and Millar pair up, you know it’s going to be some rock solid awesomeness.

Not reading Nemesis, and wanna jump on? We’ve got plenty of NEMESIS #1 still in stock, so feel free to pick up a copy this week at Third Eye. I believe we have a very limited quantity of the first printings of the book in stock still too, and of course, ’cause it’s how we roll at Third Eye, they’re still here at cover price. :)

JONATHAN HICKMAN’S HISTORY-ALTERINGS.H.I.E.L.D #2 SHIPS THIS WEDNESDAY SHOWING US THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE SHIELD AGENCY… LEONARDO DAVINCI=AGENT OF SHIELD, GALILEO=AGENT OF SHIELD, IMHOTEP=AGENT OF SHIELD, WHO ELSE? FIND OUT THIS WEEK! PLENTY OF ISSUE #1 IN STOCK AS WELL TO CATCH YOU UP!
shield2
Okay, this one is a biggie. Heck, one of the biggest surprise hits of 2010 so far, I’d say, and honestly, for us, folks, it was no surprise, ’cause we’ve been loving Mr. Hickman’s writing for a few years now! When we first heard rumblings of this strange and unusual idea, we knew that it would be an instant classic, and I’m happy to say it’s on it’s way to that point now. The concept is so simple, yet so damn cool, and after reading the first issue (and holy cow, dude, the artwork in it was OFF THE CHAIN), I’m so pumped to see where they take this thing next. But, before I move forward, lets talk about WHAT this awesome book is all about.

What is SHIELD all about? This series is exploring the history of the SHIELD organization in the Marvel Universe. Now you and I, we’ve always known SHIELD as the somewhat shadowy military organization that deals with the security of nearly the entire world, ESPECIALLY in the face of extra-normal threats. Now, in S.H.I.E.L.D, Jonathan Hickman (SECRET WARRIORS, NIGHTLY NEWS, PAX ROMANA) is exploring something that’s too cool.. the concept that the SHIELD agency has been around for centuries, because lets face it… Galactus, the Celestials, the Brood, all those things.. they were around two thousand years ago, and were just as big a threat then as they are now. So, who stood up to the big Purple Planet Eater when he flew into town? The world’s greatest thinkers, and leaders did… and they were the BROTHERHOOD OF THE SHIELD. Leonardo Da Vinci, Imhotep, Sir Issac Newton, Nostradamus and Galileo… plus countless others set events into motion that still affect the Marvel Universe to this day.

And, in a true feat of talent and creativity, Hickman pulls this off effortlessly. He manages to make it seem so believable that Da Vinci would strap on some crazy rocket flight suit and fly off to figure out how to get Galactus gone. And, seeing Imhotep leading an army against the Brood, with one of his lieutenants resembling the classic X-Men character, APOCALYPSE, or as he was known back then, En Sabah Nur, is pretty damn cool too.

Great writing, great artwork, SHIELD is must-read material, and this is one of those series that people will be talking about for many years to come. The first issue went to a second print quick, and we’re sure the same is going to happen again on issue #2, so make sure you snag up your copy this week, ’cause this book is super freakin’ good.

For those of you who missed issue #1, we still have some SHIELD #1 left before the 3rd printing is released, so you can catch up this week with issue #1 and issue #2 no problem.

BRIGHTEST DAY DOUBLE-WHAMMY THIS WEDNESDAY WITH JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST #3 and TITANS #24 *BRIGHTEST DAY – VILLAINS FOR HIRE PT 2!*
jlgenlost3
So, we’ve got a nice double whammy of BRIGHTEST DAY awesomeness this week. First off, we’ve got JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST #3 which has been one of the breakout hits of the new BRIGHTEST DAY books. While we’ve really dug most of the new stuff spinning out of BRIGHTEST DAY, JL: GENERATION LOST delivers something so freakin’ cool that it just pulls us in more and more with each and every issue. From Giffen and Winick’s dead on characterization, to the plot twists we’ve seen in only the first two issues, to the very grim portrayal of Maxwell Lord.. this one has been an outstanding read, and if you’re even remotely into the DCU, or what’s going on with BRIGHTEST DAY, this one is a must-read.

What is JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST? Well, one of the biggest hooks here is that it’s Keith Giffen returning to some of the most memorable Justice League characters we’ve ever seen. See, way back when, Giffen took the Justice League, and made the line-up one consisting of several B-List and C-List characters. By playing up the humor of this situation, putting them into sometimes absurd situations, and then playing them off of longtime DC stand-bys like Martian Manhunter or heavyweights like Batman, we got a pretty damn entertaining book.

Now, fast forward a few years, and a lot of Giffen’s characters from that era have been really dealt some nasty hands. Former Justice League sponsor, Maxwell Lord, completely flipped his lid, and put a bullet in Ted Kord / Blue Beetle’s brain during that whole Infinite Crisis thing. And, now, with Brightest Day, Maxwell Lord has returned from the grave, and he’s up to his dastardly old tricks.

The remaining members of the Justice League International come together, and take matters into their own hands, when they realize that heavy-weights like Superman are unable to help them the way they need help.

A very cool combination of humor, strong characterization, and a dark plot make GENERATION LOST a fantastic read so far, and we’re really pumped to see what’s going on in this week’s issue #3.

For those of you who missed out on issues #1 and #2, we’ve still got plenty in stock to catch you up.

Click here to read more about JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST #2 *BRIGHTEST DAY*

titans24brightestday
And, then next up on the BRIGHTEST DAY menu we’ve got TITANS #24, which follows up that killer VILLAINS FOR HIRE one-shot from a few weeks ago. The big VILLAINS FOR HIRE arc kicks into full gear this week in TITANS #24.

In the TITANS: VILLAINS FOR HIRE one-shot, we watched as the Atom from a few years ago, Ryan Choi, was hunted down by Deathstroke and his Titans. Now, in TITANS #24, Deathstroke has set his sights and his team onto a new target… LEX LUTHOR.

Click here to read more about TITANS #24, and if you missed TITANS: VILLAINS FOR HIRE *BRIGHTEST DAY* one-shot, we still have plenty in stock to get you caught up!

AVENGERS ACADEMY #1 *HEROIC AGE* – A SURPRISINGLY AWESOME READ WITH FRESH NEW CHARACTERS, AND A KILLER PLOT TWIST.. TOMORROW’S SUPERHEROES..MAYBE NOT QUITE SO SIMPLE!
avengersacademy1
Okay, I’ve gotta admit, out of all the new Avengers books to be kicking off, this was probably the one I was the most hesitant about. I’ve gotta admit too, the reason why is kind of unfair. See, AVENGERS ACADEMY takes the place of the AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE book… and that book, well, it was pretty sucky for a good long time. In fact, it wasn’t until the last two or three issues of the series where it tied into SIEGE, and shifted focus onto Taskmaster as kind of the everyman supervillain that it was good. However, that Taskmaster story was one of the coolest, and I was pretty stoked about it.

And, even though, Christos Gage, the writer of one of the very few good AVENGERS INITIATIVE arcs, as well as the blood-drenched indie hit, ABSOLUTION, was helming this one.. I was still hesitant. But, Young Avengers proved me wrong way back when as well, and before that, Thunderbolts when it first came out surprised me as well.

And, so that leads me to this point, where I’m telling you: I read the advance of AVENGERS ACADEMY #1, and I’m not going to say that this is the most mind-blowing of the AVENGERS books, but I will say that DUDE, it was a super pleasant surprise! The plotting was great, the artwork fit perfect, and the characterization did a fantastic job of making these characters into ones I’m intrigued to read about. It’s always so tricky when doing books like this, because lets face it.. not all new characters work. In fact, some of them bomb pretty hard. And, even looking at the promo art for this series, I was kind of torn.. some of them had some very cool visuals, while others looked pretty lame… but, Gage manages to add depth and dimension to each young member of the team. Basically, the Avengers Academy consists of young superheroes who Osborn personally recruited to be the future of his Initiative… and, well, the heroes of the Marvel Universe have decided to take a special interest in these kids.

Now, while I don’t wanna give away the punch of the last couple pages… cause really, those last couple of pages deliver a nice little hook that pushes you from digging the book to loving it… I will say that it’s the perfect ending to a first issue, setting up an interesting cast of new characters with their own dilemmas, and motivations in the face of a Marvel Universe that has their futures mapped.

It’s too early to say how well Avengers Academy is going to be in the long run, but right out of the gate? I dug it. It was a good first issue, and I’m very interested to see where things head next on this one.

HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* DELIVERS THE SMASH CULT HIT’S IMAGE COMICS DEBUT! THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO CASSIE HACK, AND THIS AWESOME COMIC BEGINS HERE!
hackslashmyfirstmaniac
Hack/Slash has been one of our personal favorites here at Third Eye for quite some time. I mean, c’mon, it’s a killer high-energy series that pays tribute to one of our biggest loves here: crazy whacked out horror movies, specifically slasher flicks. But, this isn’t just a simple cash-in on the genre fare of the horror world, writer Tim Seeley is smart in how he crafts his stories, blending the right balance of gore and grue with a dark sense of humor, and more tongue-in-cheek tributes and homages than a Tarantino flick.

The reason why we’re stoked though about this new HACK/SLASH series is because we’re getting to see the book now being published by IMAGE COMICS, and we could not think of a better fit than IMAGE and HACK/SLASH. Image has been making it’s name doing really rad cutting edge series like CHEW, WALKING DEAD, and INVINCIBLE for quite some time now, and HACK/SLASH fits in perfectly. Plus, it means that we get to see a consistent release schedule for the HACK/SLASH books, and consistent artists on each series. The book is so good it deserves these things!

Now, with this week’s HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC #1, we’ve got the perfect jumping on point for those of you who’ve never read HACK/SLASH before in your life, and folks, if you’re looking for something fun and different, with a side-order of blood, and guts, then HACK/SLASH is right up your alley.

What is HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC? My First Maniac is a new mini-series that explores Cassie Hack’s first case. It’s essentially, HACK/SLASH: YEAR ONE, and it shows a 16-year old Cassie Hack who has just been forced to kill her mother, the undead murderer known as the Lunch Lady. See, Cassie was picked on as a kid, and her mom, not being quite stable, killed a whole buncha kids ’cause of that and turned ‘em into lunch for other kids. And, well, after that, the kids all teamed up on her, and burned her alive.. and then, she came back as a “slasher”, which in the world of HACK/SLASH, is a vengeful undead entity that is so angry it can’t be killed easily and can’t stop killing (think Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, you know the drill)… ANYWAYS, so Cassie takes out her mom, and now, dealing with the overwhelming guilt of killing her mom, she’s torn between making a normal life in her foster family, or using her new-found slasher killing skills to kill more “slashers.”

And, that’s where the story begins, and we see just how Cassie Hack became Cassie Hack, the ultimate killer of slashers.

For those of you into horror movies, especially ’80s stuff like Nightmare on Elm Street, April Fool’s Day, Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, ect ect… you should check this one out, for sure. Seeley loads his HACK/SLASH comics with homages and send-ups to obscure gems and well-known classics, and that just enhances an already good comic.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #27 *HEROIC AGE* RESILIENT CHAPTER 3 – ONE OF THE BEST MONTHLY MARVEL COMICS CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY! NOT READING INVINCIBLE IRON MAN? CHECK OUT ISSUE #25 AND JUMP ONTO ONE OF OUR FAVORITE SERIES HERE AT THIRD EYE!
ironman27
I preach about this one every month a new issue comes out, but for sheer bigger-than-life superhero madness, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN is, in my opinion, one of the top three best monthly Marvel Comics. Heck, I’d say it’s one of the best monthly superhero books in general. Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca have been working together as the writer/artist team of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN for over two years now, and the book has been consistently AWESOME. It gets better, and better with each subsequent issue. More importantly, these guys have put the book out on time month after month after month, and kept the quality up all the while. That’s rare. You just don’t see good solid creative teams sticking together and cranking out a long, consistent and quality run like that. I mean, you’ll see super strong 6-12 issue arcs, but then that’s it, and a new artist comes along, or something, but when you’ve got a writer and artist who’ve been working together like Fraction/Larocca, there’s a chemistry that really makes the book an outstanding read.

And, that’s why I love INVINCIBLE IRON MAN. It embodies the big, the bold, the crazy, everything you want from a superhero comic featuring a guy flying around in a metal suit… but, at the same time, Fraction hits the character beats so well that you’re as invested in Stark and his supporting cast as you are interested in the bigger-than-life action sequences.

Anyways, the current arc that’s happening right now is called RESILIENT, and it began in issue #25. We’ve currently got all of these issues, plus the ones going back to the STARK DISASSEMBLED arc and before, so you can get caught up pretty easily. If you’re looking for any easy spot to jump on, we’d recommend hopping in with INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #25 *RESILIENT PT 1*, and then catching up with #26 an this week’s #27. Trust us, folks.. this series is great.

What’s INVINCIBLE IRON MAN: RESILIENT about? The Resilient arc begins in the aftermath of SIEGE and STARK DISASSEMBLED. During STARK DISASSEMBLED, we saw Tony Stark turned into a vegetable, and then brought back by “rebooting” him from an older “back-up” of his brain… and, that older back-up, a pre-CIVIL WAR back-up, means that certain gaps of his memory are missing… and, as such, he’s confronted with all these things, and begins to move forward with himself and Stark Enterprises. Of course, it wouldn’t be Iron Man without someone trying to move in and take advantage of Stark’s misfortune.. and, that’s just what the insidious Hammer Girls, are doing with their own rip-offs of Stark Tech in the form of Detroit Steel.

Issue #25 is a perfect spot to jump in, and is chapter one of Resilient, we recommend checking this series out. If you’re into Marvel, or just plain good comics, this is a must-read.

DEADPOOL: WADE WILSON’S WAR #1DELIVERS US THE BEST DEADPOOL COMIC WE’VE READ SINCE THE MERC WITH A MOUTH FIRST RETURNED IN HIS ONGOING SERIES A COUPLE YEARS AGO!
wadewilsonswar1
All right, so nowadays, it’s pretty much not a big surprise to see a new Deadpool book hit the stands. We know this. And, when you’ve got that many different books, guest-appearances, and more hitting the racks.. well.. they’re not all bound to be kick-ass, right? We know this too. However, it often causes a REALLY good one to get overlooked, and this is why we have gotta hype up the new DEADPOOL limited series, WADE WILSON’S WAR.

Folks, this mini-series captures what Deadpool should be all about, and does it perfectly. First off, it gives us actual development, and hints as to just what the heck Deadpool is all about. Why does he refuse to remove his mask? Why does he only answer to the name Deadpool? Was he really part of that crazy Weapon X special ops team that nobody has ever heard of? And, did he really at one time work alongside folks like Bullseye, Domino and the Silver Sable? Well, all we can say is that this one looks awesome.

The creative team of Duane Swierczynski and artist/inker Jason Pearson really makes this one pop as well. You can tell Swierczynski is able to hit that perfect balance of hard-boiled ultraviolence that we love about Deadpool, and then keep it right on point with the dark, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. Jason Pearson’s artwork looks fantastic, and he gets better, and better, which is impressive for someone who’s been in the industry for so long (Pearson used to do one of our faves here at Third Eye, BODY BAGS).

All in all, there’s not much more to say than: this new Deadpool book kicks ass. While we’re big fans of Merc with a Mouth, and the ongoing series, and we find that Team-Up has some brief moments of awesomeness… this Wade Wilson’s War mini-series is going to definitely be a stand-out awesome Deadpool story.

CHEW VOLUME 2: “INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR” HITS THE SHELVES THIS WEDNESDAY, ALONGSIDE CHEW #11 – FOLLOWING THE SERIES IN TRADE & WANNA HOP ONTO THE SINGLES? SNAG CHEW v.2 and CHEW #11, & YOU’RE CAUGHT UP! MORE CANNIBAL COP AWESOMENESS!
chewinternational2
One of our favorite newer series here at Third Eye for the last year or so has been IMAGE COMICS’S CHEW. The pairing of art and story in this one is just so damn good, and it’s one of those rare occasions where the artist and writer click so well that you really forget you’re reading a comic. Now, a lot of you have heard me ramble on about how dang cool I think Chew is many times before, but for those of you who’re not in the loop on this one, lemme give you some rundown on what Chew’s about..

What’s the Scoop on CHEW? CHEW is the story of Detective Tony Chu, and it’s set in the near-future, where all poultry has been made illegal and put under prohibition due to avian bird flu outbreaks. This has caused a black market to develop that centers around poultry.. you know, turkey, chicken, ect. And, in this world, we’ve got Detective Tony Chu, who happens to be a cibopath. Basically, whatever he eats, he receives psychic impressions from it. So, if he eats a hamburger, he sees the cow being murdered. If he eats veggies, he can see the pest-sprays being sprayed. So, because of all this, he eats beets. Lots of beets. ‘Cause they grow in the ground, and carry no psychic residue. But, then, hang on… one night.. Detective Chu, on a case, at a speak-easy that specializes in chicken and turkey… he happens to have the soup, as to not blow his cover, and suddenly.. he sees girls being murdered. He realizes the killer is in the kitchen, and high-tails it after the guy… and realizes the only way he’s going to get the names of these girls and solve their murders is to eat the guy. And, that’s when the FDA (who is kinda like the ATF in this world) steps in, and hires Chu on to… eat the remains of murder victims and solve their deaths. Sound awesome? It is. Wanna check it out? You can snag the first graphic novel collecting issues 1-5 for only $10. We highly recommend it!

Now, this week, the second slab of Chew awesomeness ships with CHEW v.2 INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR, and this brings us everything from special ops working for the Department of Agriculture to plants that taste like chicken, smell like bloated corpses, and even vampires? Chew gets wilder, and even more awesome in this latest one.
CHEW11
For those of you who’re following the trade paperbacks, and would like to hop onto the singles, we’ve also got the third arc of Chew beginning this Wednesday with CHEW #11, and this is the first issue to follow the second trade (which collects issues 6-10). Trust us, this one’s the kind of series that leaves you hanging that getting your monthly dose of CHEW becomes a MUST! So, check it out this Wednesday!

TOM STRONG AND THE ROBOTS OF DOOM #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* - ALAN MOORE’S ORIGINAL PULP ACTION HERO RETURNS IN A NEW LIMITED SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY!
tomstrongandrobotsofdoom1
Dude.. this is awesome! Tom Strong, the character that Alan Moore created in tribute to old school pulp greats like Doc Savage, returns this Wednesday, and we’re freakin’ pumped! Giant robots, evil nazis getting their butts kicked, and more make this one a must-read.

What’s Tom Strong all about? Well, first off, if you’re curious about going back and starting at the very beginning with Tom Strong, we’ve got the entire series both in trade paperback AND deluxe hc, collecting Alan Moore’s incredible tribute to the world of science heroes. Tom Strong’s deal though, is that he’s a “science hero”, raised in a high-gravity chamber and given an intensive education by his somewhat eccentric scientist parents, on the fictional West Indian island of Attarbar Teru. His upbringing, plus ingesting a root used by the natives of the island for health and long life, have made him nearly physically and mentally perfect. So, for example, even though he was born in 1900… he only looks like he’s in his 40s when the 2000s come rolling around. He’s assisted by his wife, and daughter, as well as Pneuman, a steam powered robot, and King Solomon, a gorilla with human characteristics. The world of Tom Strong takes the character all over different timelines, and universes, which are basically a nod to different comic genres and eras.

With the new TOM STRONG AND THE ROBOTS OF DOOM storyline, it looks like we’re going to get some good old fashioned Tom Strong awesomeness, as we see the great science hero whupping much robot ass. If you’re into pulpy awesomeness, or want a good kick-ass steampunk-esque kind of superhero comic, then you should most definitely give TOM STRONG AND THE ROBOTS OF DOOM a whirl!

UNKNOWN SOLDIER WRITER JOSHUA DYSART PAIRS UP WITH CLIFF CHIANG TO BRING NEIL YOUNG’S GREENDALE ALBUM TO LIFE IN THIS INCREDIBLE GRAPHIC NOVEL THAT NEIL YOUNG HAS OVERSEEN THE CREATION OF!
greendalehc
Sometimes you just see things come out and you know they’re going to be the kinds of books that really strike a chord with people, and go down as completely memorable. Greendale is one of those things. The legendary singer-songwriter, Neil Young, brings one of hist most personal albums, GREENDALE, to comics. Overseeing the work of the incredibly talented Joshua Dysart (the man behind the killer UNKNOWN SOLDIER series happening right now at Vertigo), they bring together a graphic novel that explores a whole new dimension to the album that Rolling Stone voted as one of the best of it’s year.

The story? It’s the fall of 2003, and the nation is heading into war, a politically active teenage girl named Sun lives, loves, and dreams in a small California town named Greendale. She’s always been different, and there’s been talk that the women in her family have all had a preternatural communion with nature. And, when a Stranger comes to town, a character whose presence causes Greendale to, well, go to hell… she finds herself on a mystical and mythical journey. To face the Stranger, she’ll unearth the secrets of her family in a political coming-of-age story infused with it’s own kind of magic.

I had a chance to flip through a preview copy of one of these, and it looks incredible. I haven’t had a chance to sit down with the book, and read it, but even for me, someone who’s not a HUGE Neil Young fan, I thought it was pretty awesome looking.

X-MEN SECOND COMING CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN UNCANNY X-MEN #525 *X-MEN SECOND COMING CHAPTER 10* and X-MEN HELLBOUND #2 *X-MEN SECOND COMING REVELATIONS TIE-IN* HOW DOES SECOND COMING GET MORE AWESOME? BY OPENING A TIME PORTAL TO THE “DAYS OF FUTURE PAST” TIME PERIOD AND POURING NIMROD SENTINELS INTO THE PRESENT!
uxm525
It was so weird not having an X-MEN SECOND COMING Chapter to look forward to last week… it was like an empty hole was drilled into our souls. That’s how good SECOND COMING has been. When we don’t get our fix, it feels like we’re empty. :) Seriously though, SECOND COMING has been the absolute best X-MEN storyline we’ve read in a long time… years, and years, and with this book, we’ve really gotten that old feeling we used to get when the X-MEN were on top of the world, and it was their books that delivered some of the biggest thrills each month.

Anyways, for those of you who aren’t already reading SECOND COMING, you can click here to go view our official THIRD EYE SECOND COMING EVENT CHECKLIST (of which we have all the chapters in stock currently) and also read a brief synopsis of what SECOND COMING is and why it kicks ass.

For those of you already in the know, you’re as eager as I am to get your hands on this week’s newest issue of SECOND COMING, and I can’t blame you. They left us on a cliffhanger a couple weeks back, and things are heating up way too much to be letting us go a week without a new chapter of SECOND COMING! Wanna know what’s awesome? There’s a freakin’ portal to the DAYS OF FUTURE PAST timeline, and it’s pouring Nimrod sentinels out into the present. It’s up to Cable, Cypher, and X-Force to make a suicide mission into the future and destroy the portal.. but are they gonna succeed?

Also, don’t sleep on the HELLBOUND mini-series tying into the X-MEN SECOND COMING. Not only is the writing and art on this one kick-ass, but it features Magik returning to Limbo, and the X-MEN trying to prevent all Hell from breaking loose! And, look at that cover… yup, it’s the X-MEN vs. DEATH – literally! And, that’s exactly who you think it is, folks.

IRREDEEMABLE VOLUME 4 TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! ARE YOU READING IRREDEEMABLE? THE MOST WHACKED-OUT, INNOVATIVE NEW SUPERHERO BOOK ON THE STANDS… EVER WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF SUPERMAN WENT COMPLETELY INSANE AND BEGAN KILLING THE WORLD? READ IRREDEEMABLE!
irredeemable3tpb
One of the best damn comics currently on the stands here at Third Eye is Mark Waid’s IRREDEEMABLE. And, one of the other best damn comics on the stands is Mark Waid’s INCORRUPTIBLE, but for right now, we’re going to talk about IRREDEEMABLE, and why it rules.
First off, Waid is on point here, he’s writing some of the best material of his career, and is delivering a very fresh and innovative voice to the world of comics right now. The stories he’s telling in the world of IRREDEEMABLE are fresh, they crackle with raw, post-modern superhero energy, but at the same time they invoke a sense of respect and knowledge entrenched deep in the standards of comic book history. It’s part of that sense of respect for what came before that makes IRREDEEMABLE such a freakin’ great read. You get this immense sense of depth for this world, and it feels like Waid could continue to tell the stories of each and every super-powered individual in this world for years… that is if the Plutonian would stop killing ‘em off.

And, that brings us to the star of the show in IRREDEEMABLE, the Plutonian. The Plutonian is your basic superman arch-type. The visitor from another world. The man with too much power. So naive, so innocent, and so intent on saving the world that he loses himself in the process. Throughout the course of Irredeemable, we’re shown flashbacks and plot twists that reveal each slight crack and fracture that led to the eventual breakdown of the Plutonian and his ongoing murder spree. Basically, imagine this: Superman, after years of being sold out by his allies, rejected by normal people, held up on a throne of adoration but then criticized for being unable to fix EVERYTHING… he snaps.. and he starts burning cities, sinking continents, and hunting down the families of his fellow Justice League members. That’s essentially how IRREDEEMABLE begins.

But, there’s so much depth to IRREDEEMABLE that it goes way beyond the old Superman gone bad arch-type. We’re introduced to characters, we see them built up through the series, and we learn that the Plutonian may not be the most evil human being alive, and that nearly all of these powerful beings are susceptible to the corruption of absolute power.

And, this week, IRREDEEMABLE gets it’s third collected edition, and we know that a lot of you guys enjoy following this one in TPB, so we figured we’d give it a shout out. It does read very well in trade, I gotta admit. So, make sure you grab your own slab of IRREDEEMABLE awesomeness this Wednesday.

Now, for those of you not reading IRREDEEMABLE, do yourself a favor and snag a copy of IRREDEEMABLE v.1 for only $9.99 this week at Third Eye. Trust us, it’s good. It’s really good. Probably some of the most fascinating stuff being done with superheroes since The Authority and Planetary.

META 4 #1 DEBUTS A NEW IMAGE LIMITED SERIES THAT DELIVERS SOME MAD SCIENCE AWESOMENESS THIS WEDNESDAY!
META4
Here’s one that looked pretty cool, but I’m still kind of unclear on the full premise of it, but hey, sometimes that’s most of the fun! Meta 4 is by Ted McKeever, who did a TON of stuff in the late ’80s and ’90s. His style of art and writing is very much in tune with the hey-day of ’90s Vertigo comics, and with his scratchy sometimes nightmarish visuals, McKeever’s work always had a unique place on the shelf. This Wednesday debuts the release of the first full on McKeever project in a while, with META 4. Meta 4 is a five issue “allegorical series” that involves both a crazy astronaut, and Gasolina, a muscular woman who dresses up as Santa all year around.

Folks, this one is whacked out, but it looks pretty freakin’ cool. Give it a peek this Wednesday at Third Eye!

ASTONISHING X-MEN XENOGENESIS #2HITS THIS WEDNESDAY AND FOLLOWS UP ON THE KILLER FIRST ISSUE OF WARREN ELLIS & KAARE ANDREW’S NEW ASTONISHING X-MEN LIMITED SERIES!
astonishingxmenxenogenesis2
The first issue of last month’s ASTONISHING X-MEN: XENOGENESIS did a great job of setting up the story, and getting me hooked. And, luckily, they didn’t keep me waiting too long, ’cause Marvel hooked us up with an advance of this week’s issue #2.. and this little mini-series is kickin’ ass, folks. I gotta tell you, the second issue smokes. Ellis has found his perfect X-Men artist in Kaare Andrews, and Kaare Andrews art is the perfect match for Ellis’s quirky science-driven superhero storytelling.

What is ASTONISHING X-MEN: XENOGENESIS? Well, way back when Whedon ended his EPIC ASTONISHING X-MEN run and Warren Ellis was set to take over… this is the X-Men comic that I EXPECTED to happen, and instead we got something wasn’t quite this good.

What made the fist issue of XENOGENESIS so good is the same thing that made Whedon’s run so memorable – incredible characterization and razor-sharp dialogue. Ellis GETS the characters here, and the addition of Kaare Andrews on art helps him explore his high concepts.

Anyways, XENOGENESIS’S set-up is a standard, but due to Ellis’s unique touch, very creepy new thing. Mutants are being born at a startling clip in a small African village, and it’s up to the X-Men to discover what the heck is really going on, and why the infants’ mutant powers are kicking in at such a ridiculously young age. The real hook is how Ellis brings his own mad science twist to mutant powers, showing different mutations like a boneless baby born with speech, and of course, the huge opening of the baby that blew up half a city. From there, we’re thrown into a good ol’ fashioned X-Men story where the X-Men have a problem, they gotta solve it, and some whacked out stuff is gonna happen in between all of this. These events all take place outside of what’s currently happening right now in SECOND COMING, but they are in continuity, just it hasn’t been made clear if this is pre-SECOND COMING or post-SECOND COMING.

All in all, if you dig the X-Men, pick up ASTONISHING X-MEN XENOGENESIS 1 and 2 this Wednesday. We still have plenty of the first issue in stock to get you caught up, and with Ellis’s crazy good writing and Andrews’s fantastic artwork, you’re gonna really dig it.

“THE GOON” CREATOR ERIC POWELL DEBUTS A BRAND NEW BOOK THIS WEDNESDAY WITH BUZZARD #1
buzzard1
We can’t let a new Eric Powell book show up, and NOT say something about it. I mean,The Goon’s one of our faves here, and Chimichanga has been a blast too. Anyhow, this new mini-series features the mysterious stranger known only as Buzzard, shows us how he is a lost soul, and wondering just what manner of creature he is after his showdown with the loathsome Zombie Priest during Goon Year.

Buzzard’s on a dark path to a village living in fear of crazy werewolf-like savages that hunt the villagers and drag them from their beds at night to a bloody death.

Plus, Eric Powell revives his Billy the Kid’s Old Timey Oddities short stories as a back-up feature.

More Eric Powell goodness? We’re all about it. Dude’s art is some of the freshest, and most exciting stuff out there these days.

SHRAPNEL: HUBRIS #1 DELIVERS GIANT MECH-BATTLE MADNESS AND MORE SPACE MARINES THAN A WARHAMMER 40K CAMPAIGN! RADICAL COMICS DOES IT AGAIN!
shrapnelhub1
The fine crew at RADICAL COMICS has proven one thing over the last few years: they always deliver the goods, and with SHRAPNEL: HUBRIS, the follow-up to their original SHRAPNEL: ARTESIA RISING story, they’re looking to knock it out of the park again with another round of killer art, killer story, and killer production values.

The concept is pretty simple.. giant mechs, intergalactic war, space marines, the colonization of Venus.. but, it’s the exectuion that makes Shrapnel stand out as a kick-ass read.

STAFF PICKS

Steve -  BRIGHTEST DAY #3 = This series keeps getting better, and better. Just when I’m like, ok, they’re not gonna top that last one… they get me again, jeez!

Trish – I,ZOMBIE #2 = I think I might have a new favorite book. The first issue was good, but this second issue really set things up nice. A zombie chick that has to eat brains once a month to keep from going bloodthirsty? too cool

Torma – AVENGERS PRIME #1 = Bigger than life and awesome read. The writing was great and Alan Davis was the perfect choice to illustrate this one.

Matt – BULLETPROOF COFFIN #1 = Awesome artwork and bizarre surrealist tributes paid to the oddity days of Golden Age comics.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 5/26/10

THE HEROIC AGE CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY, AS THE DARK UNDERBELLY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE IS EXPLORED INSECRET AVENGERS #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* by ED BRUBAKER (CRIMINAL, CAPTAIN AMERICA, INCOGNITO), and MIKE DEODATO (DARK AVENGERS)
secretavengers1
Secret Avengers has some big shoes to fill after the shocking conclusion of last week’s brand new AVENGERS #1, but after reading the advance copy on this one… folks, it stands head and shoulders with last week’s AVENGERS. This was a really freakin’ good read. There’s a real chemistry going on between Ed Brubaker’s writing, and Mike Deodato’s artwork here, and it makes the book into a pure page-turner. The other thing that really pulled me in was the whole concept of the Secret Avengers is very compelling, and to watch such a diverse group of unlikely Avengers candidates working alongside each other… it’s pretty darn cool.

So, just what the hell are the Secret Avengers? As part of the new direction Marvel is taking with it’s “Heroic Age” banner, the Secret Avengers is a new ongoing series that replaces the hole left with the ending of Dark Avengers, and it follows a team of eclectic Marvel Universe characters that have all been hand-picked by Steve Rogers (you know, Captain America.. :) ) due to the special skills each holds, and the special niches they can fill. In other words, it’s Captain America leading a shadow-ops Avengers team that handles a lot of shady things that the big, bright, and bold Avengers cannot deal with.

And, judging from the first issue, Ed Brubaker has really captured lightning in a bottle here. You know Ed Brubaker, right? He’s the guy who has us ridiculously hooked on his fantastic creator-owned crime noir books like CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO, not to mention his ultra-cool pulp serial gone 21st century takes on Captain America in the current ongoing Cap book. Brubaker is totally in his element with this new series, and you can totally detect hints of the storytelling styles he used in his dark and dirty superhero espionage sagas like SLEEPER and INCOGNITO. Now, alongside Mike Deodato, who you already know from kicking out some really killer artwork on DARK AVENGERS, Brubaker is building a new kind of Marvel team book. It really feels unique, compared to almost everything else out there right now. In fact, I haven’t seen as unique an approach to superhero team dynamics like this since Ellis’s original Authority run.

See, the way that SECRET AVENGERS operates is it relies heavily on characters who NEED something. Characters that require validation, or redemption, or just plain a second chance. And, with Steve Rogers as the team leader, it’s kind of cool, because not only are you seeing how his military tactical genius works (alongside Sharon Carter, the former SHIELD spy), and being reminded that hey, Captain America DID run special ops missions like a mofo during WW2, but you also see that eternal optimism that Captain America as a character is supposed to bring to the Marvel Universe. He’s surrounding himself with many Marvel characters who honestly are flawed individuals, and while each one serves their purpose, when reading Secret Avengers, you can’t help but sense this underlying desire of Rogers to give these people their shot at being an Avenger.

Okay, I’m rambling. I know. I tend to do that when I really like a book. Anyways, the first issue of SECRET AVENGERS sets things up really nice with a high-action operation that also serves to introduce the different team-members, and of course, there’s a few surprises in here that I can’t talk about, but they’re pretty good reveals. The entire issue has this great, dark, and gritty ’70s war movie exploitation feel to it. You know, kind of like an Inglorious Bastards vibe going on, but a little more low-key. There’s also some really cool nods to past Marvel storylines, especially some very classic Avengers tales a lot of you might remember from the ’80s and even early ’90s. Of course, these are done in a very cool, and very accessible way, where even someone who’s never read an Avengers book isn’t put off by them.

All in all, it was a damn good first issue, and I recommend it, but first..

Can I jump on fresh with this without having read any of the recent Avengers stuff? Yes, you totally can. The story starts fast and furious, and it’s not bogged down with any backstory, or anything of that sort. The origin of the team, and the reason for it’s line-up is all explained within the first couple pages of the issue.

And, who’s on the team? The line-up of Secret Avengers, I think, adds to it’s appeal in a big way. It’s a very diverse mix of Avengers classics (like the Beast), and newcomers (Nova). The line-up as of issue #1 is:

Steve Rogers (Captain America)
Sharon Carter
Moon Knight
The Beast
Nova
War Machine
The Irredeemable Ant-Man (you know, the jerky one.)
Valkryie
Black Widow

The Final Verdict? A must-read, folks. If you’re a Marvel fan, or just a fan of well-written, well put together comics, then you need to scope out Secret Avengers. It delivers a really unique read that manages to balance out the gritty tone of books like INCOGNITO with the big, over-the-top Marvel madness of the Avengers. Jump on fresh with SECRET AVENGERS #1 this Wednesday!

BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #2 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND CONTINUES THE BIGGEST BATMAN STORY IN DECADES! PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR BATMAN, THE WITCHHUNTER!
returnofbrucewayne2
Are you reading BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE? If you’re not, then you’re missing out on one of the biggest stories of the Summer. Morrison has brought us to this exciting high point in the saga of his Batman run, and is channeling all sorts of killer over-the-top Silver Age energy into a modern day package with The Return of Bruce Wayne. First off, I gotta say, the first issue of Return of Bruce Wayne surpassed the extremely high expectations I had for it. I was surprised by quite a few things in it, including the very early arrival of DC heavyweights on the hunt for Batman as he’s lost in the time-stream.

What is BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE? As the title hints, this limited series is the highly anticipated Return of Bruce Wayne. See, when Bruce Wayne went missing at the end of Final Crisis and Batman: RIP, we were given hints that he would be back. In fact, we were shown a pretty obvious hint of him in a cave, scrawling a Bat on a wall. Now, after a solid year of stories building Dick Grayson up as Batman, developing a very unique dynamic between him and Damian as the new Batman and Robin, Morrison has begun the Return of Bruce Wayne. In the Return of Bruce Wayne, we witness Bruce Wayne moving through different periods of time, and we get to see different incarnations of Batman, Gotham City, and other DC characters that fit into those eras with each issue (i.e the first issue showed a VERY Joker-esque Caveman, Vandal Savage, ect).

See, Wayne is lost in the time-stream. In the recent issues of BATMAN AND ROBIN, we’ve seen clues appearing in the present that’ve tipped the current Dynamic Duo off to Wayne’s fate. We’ve also seen some HUGE reveals, like the return of the Joker at the end of BATMAN AND ROBIN #12. And, just like a good Batman story should, we’ve been sucked into the mystery right along-side the characters who’re exploring this weird, and unusual situation for the World’s Greatest Detective.

After reading RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #1, it looks like that as a result of being zapped back in time, Wayne has mild amnesia. The first issue opened in a big way with the time-travelling space-ship from Final Crisis. It starts things in the prehistoric age, and even includes two characters some of you may be familiar with: Anthro and Vandal Savage. There’s a lot of easter eggs in the first issue of Return of Bruce Wayne, some references back to the beginning of Final Crisis, and more, but what makes the book so great is that this is a self-contained story, and you can dive in without having to know any of the previous back-story. It’s just a bonus for some to see references to the first issue of Final Crisis, and things like that. Anyways, back to the point..

What we’ve learned is that Bruce Wayne is traveling forward in time, and with the arrival of Superman, Green Lantern, and others, his very existence is endangering the universe itself. If he returns to the present, bad mojo is going to go down.

This week, the second issue of RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE hurtles the Dark Knight into the era of pilgrims, inquisitions, and witchcraft. We can only imagine what Grant Morrison is going to show us next, as that killer cover featuring a Solomon Kane-esque Batman indicates some big things. And, hey, speaking of side-notes, is it just me, or does each cover of this series have an incarnation of the Joker in the background? If you look closely at #1, you can see one of the cavemen has bleached skin and green hair, and then with this week’s issue #2 there’s a very Joker-esque Witch cackling away. Hmmmm..

Man, I can’t wait to read this one this week. I have a feeling this series is going to end up becoming one of my favorites of the Summer.

Anyhow, if you haven’t yet jumped aboard the RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, we still have plenty of issue #1 in stock. You’re probably wondering though, “Do I Need To Read A Ton of Back-story To Get Into This?” No. I mean, don’t get me wrong, going back and reading Morrison’s run is recommended because the entire run has been so good, but RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE stands on it’s own. The only thing I’d recommend is the three issue prologue that took place in BATMAN AND ROBIN (issues #10, #11, and #12) which we have currently in stock to get you caught up. Otherwise though, jump onto this great book, and find out what all the fuss is about. I mean, who doesn’t love a kick-ass Batman story?

BRIGHTEST DAY BRINGS A DOUBLE WHAMMY OF BIG THINGS THIS WEDNESDAY IN GREEN LANTERN #54*THIRD EYE MUST BUY*& GREEN LANTERN CORPS #48 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*
gl54
Man, after last month’s Green Lantern #53, I have been on the edge of my seat waiting to see where this whole thing is going to go next. I had faith that in the aftermath of BLACKEST NIGHT, Geoff Johns would keep making Green Lantern a must-read, and judging from the first two BRIGHTEST DAY banner-carrying GL books (GL Corps #47 and GL #53), it looks like my faith was well put, ’cause both GL and GL Corps are still kicking ass.

For those of you who read Green Lantern #53 last month, then you know exactly what I mean when I say cliffhanger ending. The conspiracy forming between Guy Gardner, Atrocitus, and Ganthet is intriguing as hell, and I’m really eager to find out where they take things this Wednesday in the new GREEN LANTERN #54. If by some chance you jumped off GL with the end of BLACKEST NIGHT, do yourself a favor and grab a copy of GREEN LANTERN #53 along with GREEN LANTERN #54 this week, ’cause you’re missing out on pretty much the entire continuation of the whole New Guardians saga which is following the post-Blackest Night development of Sinestro, Star Sapphire, Atrocitus, Larfleeze, and the rest of the gang as the New Guardians. Plus, there’s some pretty interesting tidbits following up on the “deputy Lanterns” from Blackest Night, like Lex Luthor and the Orange Lantern stuff. But, most importantly, Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke are keeping the quality level SUPER high on this, and each issue continues to keep that epic, sprawling feel that GL and Blackest Night have had for the last couple of years.

Meanwhile in Green Lantern Corps #48, show us that the Green Lantern Honor Guard has expanded to include Ganthet, and John Stewart, and the two of them are going to be helping Kyle Rayner find out just what the deadly enemy is that is inside the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. Following up on last month’s GREEN LANTERN CORPS #47, I’m also pretty excited about this one as well. Last month, we saw the Laws of Oa being questioned, and put into doubt by certain Lantern Corps members. It was an excellent post-Blackest Night issue, and really set up the Corps as a compelling, and interesting part of what is going on on in regards to Brightest Day.

IT’S “INGLORIOUS BASTERDS” MEETS “INCOGNITO” THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE NEW BOOM! (publishers of IRREDEEMABLE) SERIES, “7 PSYCHOPATHS!” *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL*, FROM “CRIMINAL” and “INCOGNITO” CO-CREATOR SEAN PHILLIPS! A TRUE GRINDHOUSE WARTIME THRILLRIDE!
7psychopaths
Here’s one that I saw the Previews for a couple months ago, and thought was just too cool. BOOM! Studios have really been impressing me in the last year with lots of fresh, and exciting new series, like THE ANCHOR, IRREDEEMABLE, INCORRUPTIBLE, and the superb handling of their licensed books like 28 DAYS LATER. They’ve really been doing what a good growing publisher in today’s comic market should be: putting out quality, innovative stories with top notch writing, artwork, and production values. In other words, they’ve been bringing their A-Game.

And, this Wednesday, it looks like they’ve got another hit on their hands with this exciting new limited series that’s being billed as the comic book equivalent of “Inglorious Basterds”, 7 PSYCHOPATHS. It’s the thick of World War II, and there’s only one way to bring the war to a quick end: kill Hitler. But, for such a mission, special talents are required. That’s where Joshua Goldschmidt comes in, with his 7 Psychopaths. A gathering of madmen and women that possess the skills, the courage, and the sheer fearlessness to take out one of the most evil men on the planet. This one’s going to be dripping in blood, folks, and we couldn’t be more stoked about it.

Now, ontop of the killer concept of the story, it’s also got the artwork of one of our big Third Eye favorites, CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO artist and co-creator, SEAN PHILLIPS. And, folks, his art has never looked better. The stylized, dark, and noir feel of Phillips art never fails to pull us into a story, and with 7 Psychopaths, he captures the pure, unadulterated grindhouse madness of this story perfectly.

Check it out this Wednesday at Third Eye!

And, in the meantime, click here for a preview of 7 PSYCHOPATHS #1

KEVIN SMITH’S GREEN HORNET #4 FOLLOWS UP LAST MONTH’S FANATASTIC ISSUE #3 THIS WEDNESDAY! FIND OUT WHY THIS SERIES HAS QUICKLY REACHED MUST-READ STATUS! ISSUES #1-3 STILL IN STOCK, GET CAUGHT UP ON ONE OF THIS YEAR’S COOLEST NEW SERIES!
kevinsmithsgreenhornet
I gotta admit, I was not completely blown away by the first couple issues of KEVIN SMITH’S GREEN HORNET. However, I did have some faith that things would get interesting, and damn, issue #3 was the make or break point, and it totally got me hooked. The first two issues of the series spend a lot of time setting up the character, and his world. Getting everything in place for us as readers, as well as introducing the vast world of the Green Hornet to new readers, so that the events of #3 had more of an impact, and after reading issue #3, I can definitely appreciate the set-up of #1 and #2.

So, you’re probably wondering what it was that really got me hooked? It wasn’t the death of the original Green Hornet that hooked me, but the whole bar scene with the original Kato. In that whole part of the book, Smith manages to capture a real sense of magic as you watch the relationship between Britt Reid Jr, and the elder Kato, begin. I’m a sucker for kung fu movies, and the whole reluctant student and wise-ass mentor dynamic always gets me. But, anyhow, all I can say is now I’m hooked.

And, this Wednesday, things kick into full gear with the latest installment of Kevin Smith’s GREEN HORNET. It looks like we’ll be seeing Britt Reid Jr taking on the mantle of the Green Hornet, and the development of the new Kato.

I love the universe that Dynamite is building with their Green Hornet revival, and as someone who has never been super familiar with the Green Hornet, but has always appreciated the character, it’s pretty accessible and easy to get into. Plus, Jonathan Lau’s artwork is fantastic, and Smith’s plotting and dialogue is dead on point. Like I said, issue #3 is the point where I really went from being on the fence about the book to being totally into it, and I’m really digging the series now.

If you haven’t checked out the Green Hornet stuff yet, we currently have all three issues in stock, and can get you caught up pretty easily, so check it out this week at the shop!

BRIGHTEST DAY: JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #2 CONTINUES AFTER A FREAKIN’ AWESOME DEBUT ISSUE! MAXWELL LORD, YOU RASCAL, YOU!
jlgenerationlost2
The first issue of the new JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST series blew me away. Seriously, I was expecting something good, but I was really impressed with this one. First off, the big news… as part of the BRIGHTEST DAY resurrection festival, Maxwell Lord is back. You know, the guy who put a bullet in Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), and got his neck snapped by Wonder Woman after nearly destroying the world. And, with Lord’s return, so is the fan-favorite team of goofs, The Justice League International. And, with the JLI, we’re also seeing the return of the man who gave them their magic, Keith Giffen. And, Giffen’s still got it folks. He’s able to balance out humor with some pretty serious stuff perfectly, and it makes for a fantastic read.

The first issue sets the stage, as we see how the A-List Justice Leaguers have been tasked with locating and neutralizing the returned Maxwell Lord, who’s up to no good, as usual. Of course, this leaves the B-Listers delegated to doing menial tasks. Growing tired of his role, and feeling a heavy responsibility of finding Lord himself after the murder of Blue Beetle, Booster Gold rounds up his team-mates from JLI, and decides to go find Lord himself. Giffen does a fantastic job of making this ragtag group of B-Lists the last hope for things while the heavy-hitters are otherwise out of commission.

And, dude, do they make Maxwell Lord despicable in this, or what? His nastiness as a villain just continues to rise. All in all, the first issue of JL: Generation Lost was one of the better new Brightest Day books I’ve read, and even though I’m an old fan of the Giffen/Maguire Justice League days, I think this one does a great job of making itself accessible and entertaining to people who aren’t as familiar with those characters.

This Wednesday, the second issue arrives and we can only imagine where things are going to go as Fire, Ice, Captain Atom, Booster Gold, and the rest of the crew run the risk of being eliminated by the sadistic Maxwell Lord.

Miss #1? Catch up with #1 this week, as we’ve still got plenty in stock!

INVINCIBLE v.12 STILL STANDING TRADE PAPERBACK *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! ARE YOU READING ROBERT KIRKMAN’S (WALKING DEAD) INCREDIBLE SPIN ON THE SUPERHERO GENRE? YOU NEED TO!
invinciblestillstanding
Annnnd it’s finally here, another slab of INVINCIBLE awesomeness with the 12th trade paperback of Robert Kirkman’s killer take on the superhero genre, INVINCIBLE. Invincible is another one of those series that we find a lot of people tend to follow in trade, so we know that when a new volume hits, you guys are pumped to hear about it. And, you should be, ’cause INVINCIBLE is one of the best damn series on the shelves these days.

I mean, INVINCIBLE and WALKING DEAD have been Robert Kirkman’s big two books for the better part of a decade now, and they just continue to get better. Imagine the gutpunches, cliffhangers, and just crazy twists you see in WALKING DEAD, and then apply them to the world of superheroes, and that brings you INVINCIBLE.

Seriously though, the real hook of INVINCIBLE is that it’s probably the most realistic superhero book I’ve ever read. Now, when I say realistic, I don’t mean realistic in the sense of the grim, and the gritty. I love that kinda stuff too, and while INVINCIBLE can be pretty grim, it’s not fueled by that. No, I mean, it really reads and plays out like what would happen if Superman had a son who’s powers manifested around the age of 17, and then from there, it follows the character as he ages with the series. In other words, Invincible goes to college, has relationships, deals with the ups and downs of his personal life, and balances with his own superhero life. This is truly the 21st Century Spider-man story, folks. And, the way things are handled is so perfect. Even the dynamic between Invincible and villains of his is handled realistically, and sometimes built up over the course of many issues.

And, if you’re hooked on the twists and turns of WALKING DEAD, then INVINCIBLE delivers those as well. Imagine a character being built up over the course of 50 or 60 issues, and then in three panels, they’re torn to pieces. It’s vicious, lemme tell you. On top of all that, and going back to the whole realism thing, the series has this wildly vivid and realistic portrayal of violence, but on that superhero scale. In other words, when superpowered people are slugging it out, buildings get broken, costumes get torn, and bones can sometimes be literally torn in two. The blood, and the guts in INVINCIBLE is often surprising, and it’s the stark contrast between Ottley’s colorful artwork with the sometimes gory demise of certain characters that just adds to Invincible’s appeal.

But, enough of my ramblings, if you’re not reading INVINCIBLE, check out volume 1 this week at Third Eye. If you are already on board, then we know we’ll see you this week for INVINCIBLE v.12! And trust us, the stuff that goes down on in this volume is over-the-top huge.

ROB ZOMBIE’S WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BARON VON SHOCK? DELIVERS “DR. PHIBES” HORROR MEETS MODERN DAY CELEBRITY MADNESS!
baronvonshock
Rob Zombie brings his multimedia horror circus to the world of comics this Wednesday with the new WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BARON VON SHOCK? mini-series from IMAGE COMICS. It’s no secret that just like with horror flicks, Rob Zombie’s a big fan of comic books, and it should be interesting to see him bring his pen to the panel and page.

The story behind Baron Von Shock is about Leon Stokes, and follows a man who played Baron Von Shock. Of course, he ends up screwing it all up, and is a bit of a loser without the Von Shock identity. This story is his last attempt to regain the life he feels he should have. This one is a little more grounded in reality than what you may expect from Rob Zombie, as it’s a drama following a washed up TV star trying to regain control of his life. The book though is full of those psychotronic B-movie kind of characters that Rob Zombie has a knack for writing. It takes the world of horror and mixes it with the true life horror of celebrity decadence, and VH1 Where Are They Now specials.

THANOS HAS RETURNED! THE THANOS IMPERATIVE BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY INTHANOS IMPERATIVE IGNITION #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*
thanosimperative1
The cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe has slowly grown over the last decade into one of the freshest, and most interesting places for Marvel stories to be told. Almost entirely under the talented pens of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, Marvel revived their once forgotten cosmic characters, and revamped them for the 21st century. It all began with the ANNIHILATION series a few years back, and ever since then, we’ve seen a lot of amazing stuff surface, including the cult favorite GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY series. Abnett and Lanning have managed to take an underused area of the Marvel Universe, and infuse it with the kind of epic, sci-fi storytelling you’d see in something like Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, and then cram it full of all sorts of crazy, over-the-top sci-fi ideas, ranging from the influence of post-apocalyptic space battle awesomeness like in Warhammer 40k to the downright surreal and creepy Cthulhu gone Space Age madnesss we saw in Realm of Kings.

Now, they’re getting ready to tell their biggest cosmic odyssey yet, with the return of everyone’s favorite Mad Titan, THANOS. This Wednesday, the THANOS IMPERATIVE begins in the THANOS IMPERATIVE: IGNITION one-shot, and we couldn’t be more stoked. Ever since Thanos was taken down by Drax the Destroyer in ANNIHILATION, we knew that one day the death-obsessed space Titan would return. And, now, he’s back. On one side, you’ve got the Marvel Universe’s #1 threat, thanos, and on the other, a dark new force determined to obliterate the entire galaxy. In the middle of all of this, the outnumbered and battle-hardened heroes ranging from Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy are all that stand between us and complete decimation. The biggest cosmic war yet has erupted which will gather the galaxy’s greatest warriors with a collection of forgotten greats, and unlikely candidates that you’d never see coming. And, of course, we know that Abnett and Lanning will deliver the goods, BIG TIME, ’cause lets face it, they haven’t let us down yet.

We were lucky enough to read an advance of this one, and folks, it delivers big-time. From the opening pages to the cliffhanger end, this one is full of surprises. It also serves as the perfect entry point for those of you who have been meaning to jump into some of the cosmic storylines Marvel has been perfecting for the last few years. Find out why this stuff is one of the best kept secrets in comics with the THANOS IMPERATIVE. Big, crazy, and fantastically well-written and illustrated, THANOS IMPERATIVE is gonna kick ass this summer. There’s even a nice recap at the very beginning explaining just what the hell Thanos has been up to, and why he has returned at the beginning.

WARREN ELLIS’S WOLFSKIN: HUNDREDTH DREAM #2 CONTINUES ELLIS’S GORY, VISCERAL BARBARIAN SAGA! PLENTY OF ISSUE #1 IN STOCK TO GET YOU CAUGHT UP!

wolfskinhundredthdream2
Warren Ellis is probably one of the most prolific writers working in comics today. He really conjures up the spirit of the old-time pulp writers who cranked out insanely awesome idea after insanely awesome idea. The man is always working on new projects, and he never disappoints us.

With the new WOLFSKIN saga, HUNDREDTH DREAM, Ellis is giving us a heavy dose of Robert E. Howard and throwing it in a blender with some of his trademark ultra-violence. The storytelling and artwork go pretty well-together, and I was pretty impressed with the first issue, but it’s the second one where things REALLY kick up a few notches.

In the first issue, the story opened with some back-story filling us in on the Dark Ages of earth, a time period where technology has been slowly pushing out magic and mysticism from the world. We quickly find out that Wolfskin is going to be leading a raiding party from what is now Britain to Scandinavia, and the set-up plays out like a super-rad, ultra-violent dream team of D&D characters. The priest, the archer, the fireball wielding magician, the engineer, and then of course, Wolfskin, the Barbarian. The reason for their quest? Not treasures, or glory, but to be free from a world of technology, and just for the plain ol’ adventure of it all.

And of course, there’s a monster… there’s always a monster in stories like these. And, it’s freakin’ horrifying!

All in all, the set-up for this was great, and seeing Ellis doing a badass sword-and-sorcery kind of book that does justice to all those old school D&D-style arch-types is pretty rad.

If you missed issue #1, pick it up this Wednesday and hop on the series, and find out why we’re digging it so much!

THUNDERBOLTS #144 *HEROIC AGE* KICKS OFF A KILLER NEW DIRECTION WITH A NEW TEAM CONSISTING OF JUGGERNAUT, CROSSBONES, GHOST, MOONSTONE, LUKE CAGE… AND THE MAN-THING? THE MOST KICK-ASS INCARNATION OF THUNDERBOLTS YET BEGINS HERE! A NEW DIRECTION, A NEW TEAM, A PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT!
tbolts144
Man, I have to admit, this is one of my favorites so far amongst all the new HEROIC AGE relaunches happening this month. The first issue of this new direction, new jumping on point for Thunderbolts was a fantastic read. The artwork is seriously on point, and the writing is sharp as hell. The real appeal for me though was the excitement I used to get when I was younger, and you’d see a team of just plain cool characters being put together, and the first issue of this new Thunderbolts definitely captures that feeling. The whole hook behind Thunderbolts has always been bad guys posing as good guys. Way back when, it started with Baron Zemo tricking the world, and passing off lame-os like The Beetle, and the Fixer as good guys. And, then Warren Ellis re-invented the book once again with Mike Deodato, and pretty much laid the groundworks for the Dark Avengers, as he put Osborn in charge of the team, and used it as a team of bad guys hunting heroes but looking like heroes to the public eye.

And, now, with the new direction, it looks like the book is once again getting reinvented as something pretty freakin’ cool. Basically, Steve Rogers does not want to see the Thunderbolts used like they were under Osborn’s reign. In other words, the book is almost doing a 180 as it’s taking a team of vile supervillains and honestly, legitimately, trying to use them as a strike force for good. Under the leadership of Luke Cage, the motley crew of Juggernaut, Crossbones, Ghost, Moonstone, and Man-Thing are meant to serve as the Marvel equivalent to the Suicide Squad. The team of bad guys who take on the missions no one else will, and are being forced to ultimately serve the greater good, against their evil nature.

The book reads VERY well, and the artwork captures the grittiness of it perfectly. I’m already intrigued by the line-up, and the dynamic of seeing these characters who’re given the option of either rotting in prison forever, or handling these impossible missions, and how they stick to walking the straight and narrow. And, I have to admit, the line-up is pretty intense:

Luke Cage as the team-leader.
Juggernaut
Crossbones
Ghost
Moonstone
Man-Thing

It’s a weird mix, but somehow it works perfectly, and having Luke Cage as kind of the reader’s perspective on things, watching as how he reacts to dealing with this unlikely grouping, is very interesting.

All in all, the first issue of this was a fantastic read, and left me wanting more. If you’re looking for another good Heroic Age title to try, give THUNDERBOLTS #144 a shot this Wednesday, as it’s a fresh jumping on point, and you require no real prior knowledge of the Thunderbolts books to hop aboard.

CHOKER #3 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* – PURE HORRIFIC CYBERPUNK MADNESS FROM FELL & 30 DAYS OF NIGHT CO-CREATOR, BEN TEMPLESMITH! IMAGINE “BLADE RUNNER” MEETS “FROM DUSK TIL DAWN”, AND YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK!
CATCH UP WITH ISSUES #1 AND #2 STILL IN STOCK!
CHOKER3
Ben Templesmith’s six-issue limited series CHOKER has quickly become a favorite here at Third Eye. It’s the perfect blend of hardcore splatterpunk horror, dystopian Blade Runner / William Gibson-esque sci-fi, and straight to the jugular crime noir, and we love it. We can’t get enough. And, it doesn’t hurt that Templesmith’s artwork on this one is some of his best looking stuff to date.

What is CHOKER? Choker takes place in Shotgun City, an ugly, scary, and ungodly future landscape where the cops are genetically enhanced and the criminals differentiate themselves from the normal citizens only by being crazier and more grotesque. The artwork of Templesmith manages to capture all the hideous glory of Shotgun City, and make it believable and unbelievable at the same time. It’s like if 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and Ed Brubaker’s CRIMINAL had babies. The story follows a down on his luck private detective who’s given one more chance to get it right, and reclaim his job at the police department… and maybe even rid himself of the disease that’s turning his hand into a living, alien entity. But, anyways, he’s on the case of a drug that’s turning people into shark-teethed predator things, which resemble vampires, but goes beyond that.

The joy of CHOKER is completely nihilistic, and awesome. You’re being taken deeper and deeper down a spiral into a future gone completely wrong. Only a few steps removed from our own, this is where we could be in about 50 years if things like corpse vacuums and alien hand disease became the norm.

The third issue hits this Wednesday, and I can’t wait. If you missed the first two, we’ve got plenty of issue #1 and issue #2 to catch you up. Find out why we’re digging this series so much, and hop on this Wednesday. One thing I will say is the first issue is total set-up, and it’s on the second issue where the book really gathers momentum, so if you haven’t given the second issue a shot, do so this week.

THOR #610 *SIEGE EPILOGUE* HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! THOR VS. RAGNAROK, AND ONLY ONE WILL BE LEFT STANDING!
thor610
It’s no secret that Thor has been continuing to grow as one of Marvel’s best monthly series. Following along the same path that books like INVINCIBLE IRON MAN and CAPTAIN AMERICA have, Thor went from the killer creative team of Straczynski and Coipel to the comparably killer creative team of Gillen and Tan, and soon, it’ll be moving into the more than capable hands of Matt Fraction.

Anyways, long story short: Thor has been a kick-ass book for quite a while now, and it just gets better and better. This Wednesday, we see the culmination of much of what’s been going on in Gillen’s run with THOR during SIEGE. This one is listed as SIEGE epilogue, and promises to deliver the fight we’ve all been waiting for: Thor vs. the crazed clone introduced during CIVIL WAR, Ragnarok. Ragnarok, the insane clone of Thor that wreaked havoc all throughout Civil War has come to Asgard with one mission: to kill Thor, and as many other Asgardians as he can. And, with Asgard decimated by the aftermath of SIEGE, we can only wonder just how they’ll fare against a fresh and ready clone of the Thunder God!

STEVE NILES and NORTH 40 ARTIST FIONA STAPLES KICK OFF “THE MYSTERY SOCIETY” THIS WEDNESDAY WITH MYSTERY SOCIETY #1
mysterysociety1
Here’s one that looks pretty freakin’ cool, and with a creative team like Niles and Staples heading it up, it better be! Steve Niles is pretty much a modern day master of horror comics storytelling. He’s the guy who created the uber-successful 30 DAYS OF NIGHT line of comics. He’s the guy who brought back Bernie Wrightson to do awesome stuff on THE GHOUL, and DEAD SHE SAID. He’s the guy who has knocked us off our feet with more horror comics than we can think, and it’s pretty awesome to see him coming out swinging with a brand new series featuring the art of the incredibly talented Fiona Staples.

So, what is The Mystery Society? Mysteries and conspiracy theories, whether grounded in fact or composed purely of fantasy, have long fascinated us. In the Mystery Society, a pair of esoteric adventurers look to shed light on government cover-ups and occult conspiracies. Mystery Society is less of a gorefest splatterbook, and more of an action-adventure fueled conspiracy book that eplores everything from the theft of Edgar Allen Poe’s skull to Area 51. Imagine X-FILES meets the Addams Family, and that seems to be a pretty good way of putting it. Each issue focuses on a different mystery, but there’s a bigger wide-ranging storyarc that runs through the series.

All in all, this one looks like it’s going to be a kick-ass little limited series, and we can’t wait to read it this Wednesday.

“WORLD WAR Z” WRITER MAX BROOKS DOES GI JOE THIS WEDNESDAY WITH GI JOE: HEARTS AND MINDS #1
gijoeheartsandminds1
Here’s another cool one that crept up out of nowhere from one of our favorite authors, Max Brooks. Yes, the guy behind WORLD WAR Z is kicking off a five issue limited series that takes the world of GI JOE into a dark and gritty new direction. Essentially, each issue spotlights one Joe, and one Cobra, and serves as vignettes that act as glimpses into their lives on and off the battlefield. Sort of like graphic representations of the action-figure filecards you used to clip out of the back of GI JOE figures packaging. The first issue looks at Major Bludd, and the three generations of life on the homefront, and also spotlights Spirit, who we see has sensory overload that can be both a positive and a negative.

Personally, I’m pretty excited about this. I’ve loved the stuff that Brooks has done with World War Z, and to see him branching out into new territory is very cool. Plus, the way that he’s describing how he’s adding more life and depth to these characters that many of us have grown up with, is pretty damn cool.

X-MEN SECOND COMING CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN X-FORCE #27 *X-MEN SECOND COMING CHAPTER 9* WITH IT’S 9TH CHAPTER! AS WELL AS THE X-MEN SECOND COMING REVELATIONS: BLIND SCIENCE ONE-SHOT!
xforce27
I swear to God, SECOND COMING just gets better, and better every week. I never thought I’d be this wrapped up in the X-Books again, but Marvel has got me big-time. Last week’s X-MEN LEGACY served as a nice mid-way point for the series, as we’ve gone from the great chase to the base under siege approach.

This week, X-MEN SECOND COMING continues with it’s 9th chapter in X-FORCE #27, and it looks like the real horror of what the X-Men face is going to be fully revealed here, and the reality of every mutant on the planet dying nears… this is it, as the X-Men go on the offensive.

For those of you who haven’t yet started reading SECOND COMING yet, you really should check it out. We’ve currently got all the chapters in stock, and folks, it’s fantastic. One of the best X-MEN storylines we’ve seen in YEARS. The artwork, the storytelling, everything is so urgent, and so big, it’s fantastic.

RADICAL PUBLISHING RE-IMAGINES WYATT EARP WITH THE NEW EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS SERIES! TRY THE #0 ISSUE FOR ONLY $1.00 THIS WEDNESDAY!
earpsaintsandsinners
RADICAL Publishing has really made a name for itself with innovative new series, high production values, and just plain cool comics. This Wednesday, they’re unleashing the $1.00 #0 of their latest and greatest, EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS. This one looks to be reimagining the story of Wyatt Earp as the only honest man in Las Vegas. It details the life of a futuristic family of Lawmen as they struggle to maintain control in a United States increasingly spiraling towards complete chaos. Kind of a real dystopian look at the classic tale of Wyatt Earp. People getting gunned down in the street over groceries instead of Rolexes. And, in one desperate hope to control random acts of violence, dueling to protect yourself and property, as well as settling petty differences, becomes perfectly legal, and America has social conditions very similar to the Old West. People are armed all the time, and are quick to draw their weapons to protect their property.

As people become more deprived, criminals who stick it to the authority figures, by robbing banks and doing what they feel needs to be done to live become nationwide celebrities, and you’ve got wanted felons and murderers sharing the spotlight on TMZ with movie stars and musicians. And, that’s where the Lawmen come in, like Wyatt and his brothers.

It looks pretty damn cool, and whether it’s set in 2020, or the Old West, I’m a sucker for a good and gritty western.

STAFF PICKS

Steve -  AVENGERS #1 = This one really got me. It’s bigger than life, and filled to the brims with raw smashmouth superhero energy. It kind of channels old school ’80s Marvel, BUT, also manages to tell a fresh, and modern story that’s as cutting edge as anything Bendis has ever done. The ending is the big hook though, and I cannot wait to find out more about that! Highly recommended.

Torma – BRIGHTEST DAY #2 = Every issue of this book has left me on a cliffhanger, and the surprise reveal in this one was the biggest yet. Brightest Day is keeping me almost more hooked than Blackest Night did!
