THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 2/10/10

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2* – THE LEAD UP TO BRUCE WAYNE’S RETURN CONTINUES, AND THE MYSTERIES BEHIND BLACK HAND’S CONNECTION TO BATMAN CONTINUE!

A couple of weeks ago, the biggest Batman story arc in Grant Morrison’s critically acclaimed BATMAN AND ROBIN series began. A story arc that not only intends to answer some very crucial questions about Bruce Wayne, and his relation to BLACKEST NIGHT, but also, serves as a lead-in to this spring’s highly anticipated BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. And, it began with a bang!

Since the beginning of Blackest Night, we’ve all been wondering what the deal was with Black Hand, and the supposed skull of Bruce Wayne. In Blackest Night 5, we were completely mind-boggled by what appeared to be the resurrection of Batman as a Black Lantern. Of course, there were some little clues and hints that it may not be the real thing. In other words, there’s some very well done collaboration going on between Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and DC’s editorial department in making sure that everything links up how it should.

And, this leads us to Grant Morrison’s BLACKEST KNIGHT storyline which began in BATMAN AND ROBIN #7, and will be running through BATMAN AND ROBIN 8 and 9. We started out in BATMAN AND ROBIN #7, with the reintroduction of two of my personal favorite characters: Knight and Squire. Essentially, England’s answer to Batman and Robin. They’re assisting Dick Grayson in locating one of the last remaining Lazarus Pits. We get a very cool, and interesting trip into the underworld of England, and even a neat look at the Rogues Gallery of Knight and Squire. It’s kind of cool to see the paralells that run between here and Gotham City. Of course, we know why they’re looking for the Lazarus Pits, but you and I both know things aren’t going to work out quite how they should. The end of BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 showed us something very cool, involving the gloved hand of a certain Dark Knight. But we’re thinking that all is not as it seems.

This week, the storyline continues in BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2*, as we see Dick Grayson, Knight, Squire, and Batwoman explore the mysteries of the Lazarus Pit,  and the terror they may have unleashed on the world. The ties between Bruce Wayne and Blackest Night baddie, Black Hand may be revealed a little more. Meanhwhile, back in Gotham City, Alfred and Damian (Robin), who’s recuperating, are at the mercy of some serious bad mojo.

Folks, I can’t stress enough how great of a book BATMAN AND ROBIN has been, and it just gets better. If you’re not reading Batman and Robin, and you’re a Batman fan at all, then you are missing out on what is possibly the best Batman monthly series in many years. Morrison has demonstrated his passion for the characters by not paying homage to great stories of the past, but also, adding a fresh, new dynamic to the characters, and their world. I mean, in just 8 issues, Morrison’s introduced several villains and supporting characters that’re already much more interesting than some characters that get full 6 issue arcs fleshing out their back stories. And that’s after just a few panels of appearances!

If you’re looking to hop onboard with the current arc, BLACKEST KNIGHT, you can do so by grabbing BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 1*, this serves as a fantastic jumping on point, and is a great area for new readers to come aboard. If you’re really intrigued by the series, and want to get the entire run so far, we currently have issues 1-7 all well-stocked here at Third Eye.

Either way, be sure to check out BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2*

HAUNT #5 – THE FIRST STORY ARC IN THE HIT ONGOING SERIES FROM ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) AND TODD MCFARLANE CONCLUDES THIS WEDNESDAY!

One of the best books to come out of 2009 was the new Image ongoing series HAUNT. Written by one of our favorite writers here, Robert Kirkman (the man behind WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE), and illustrated by comics legend TODD MCFARLANE, and rising star INVINCIBLE artist RYAN OTTLEY, HAUNT is a true all-star title. Each issue is better than the last, in our opinion, and we feel that Kirkman is really hitting his stride now with issue #5 due out this week. The beauty of HAUNT is it celebrates the fun you can have with comics. It brings you back to when you were 13, and you found yourself saying “THAT’S SICK!!”, but at the same time, it’s got a very well-written story that keeps you interested, and doesn’t come off as one-dimensional. It’s this combination of a visceral fun read, with a well-paced, and well-crafted storyline that makes HAUNT so damn good. Oh, and the art is crucial. :)

What’s Haunt all about? HAUNT is the story of two brothers. Kurt and Daniel Kilgore. Daniel, a catholic priest, is estranged from his brother Kurt, a government agent. When Kurt gets murdered, due to his mission, and his refusal to follow the agenda of it completely, soemthing goes wrong. He’s still on this plane, as a ghost, and as his brother Daniel, is about to be murdered in connection to Kurt, Kurt posesses him, and the two bond.. forming HAUNT. The two begin a bloody path to find out the mysteries behind Kurt’s murder, and also how to protect themselves and any of their loved ones from being hurt in the crossfire. And, this is just the first story arc.

Why we love it? On the surface, the plot sounds like it could be a little one dimensional, but that’s the beauty of HAUNT. Kirkman takes an ages old concept (two brothers who hate each other, one dies, the other takes vengeance), and adds depth, and a compelling storyline to it, which makes everything seem fresh. The art and story mesh together perfectly, and each issue is a literal breakneck joyride from cover to cover. The book is violent as hell, which adds to the hyper-kinetic visceral appeal the series has. And, the plot, and characterization are just plain great. The story behind Kurt and Daniel continues to flesh out with each issue, making for a more compelling relationship between the two brothers. The supporting cast, as well as the “bad guys” of the series also gain more depth as things go on. Another reason why we love it? Every issue is packed with those moments that evoke that teenage excitement of a stack of comics, and Slayer albums, where you just go “dude.. that’s awesome.” The way that Kirkman is exploring the character’s powers is pretty damn cool, and there’s many moments when it comes down to that.

Want to Catch Up? We currently have HAUNT issues #1-4 all well-stocked here at Third Eye, so if you’re interested in hopping on, we got you covered.

ADVENTURE COMICS #7 *WHAT WOULD BLACK LANTERN SUPERBOY DO?* FEATURING BLACK LANTERN SUPERBOY - A VERY SPECIAL BLACKEST NIGHT ISSUE EXPLORES BLACKEST NIGHT’S EFFECTS ON CONNOR KENT!

Blackest Night continues to deliver some of the best stuff on the stands. The conclusion to last week’s BLACKEST NIGHT WONDER WOMAN was awesome, and that QUESTION one-shot rocked pretty hard too. And, now this week, we get to see a very cool one-shot issue of ADVENTURE COMICS featuring Connor Kent, Black Lantern. You might remember at the end of BLACKEST NIGHT 5, and then throughout BLACKEST NIGHT 6, many of the DCU’s characters who had previously returned from the grave (like Green Arrow, Superman, Wonder Woman, and yes, Superboy) were reclaimed by Nekron, and converted into BLACK LANTERNS.

Picking up on that plot thread, this week, in ADVENTURE COMICS #7, we get to see the very dark side of Superboy, as all the nasty stuff hiding beneath his subconcious comes to surface. And, according to the DCU Source blog, we learn a pretty nasty secret about Connor Kent that’s going to blow a lot of fans away. In addition, something big that’s supposed to significantly impact the character and his place in the DCU is supposed to happen in this issue as well.

All we know is that Adventure Comics has been one of our favorite new DCU titles since issue #1. Geoff Johns launched this series perfectly, and it’s continued to carry steam all the way through. We did think it may have jumped the shark a little with Superboy Prime, but now that they’ve gotten back to focusing on Connor Kent, it’s picking back up a lot of steam. PLUS, it’s Blackest Night this week, and it’s one of the coolest Blackest Night angles we’ve seen: what does the corrupting influence of Nekron do when it taints heroes who already escaped death once?

SECRET SIX #18 *BLACKEST NIGHT*CONCLUDES THE SECRET SIX / SUICIDE SQUAD BLACKEST NIGHT SAGA! FIND OUT WHY SECRET SIX IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE DC BOOKS!

Secret Six has really turned into one of my favorite DC titles over the last year and a half. Gail Simone proves that she’s one of the best “team book” writers in the biz, and especially excels at working with characters that have been out of the spotlight for a bit. Her characterization of the members of Secret Six is dead on, and has fleshed out this team as a very cool, very solid line-up. The concept of taking a line-up of assorted DC supervillains, and neutral characters, and using them as a last resort kind of team.

The current story arc that’s been going down is a crossover with the predecessors of Secret Six, the Suicide Squad. Gail Simone has teamed up with the original Suicide Squad writer, John Ostrander, to tell this tale, and set against the backdrop of BLACKEST NIGHT, it’s been great.

Suicide Squad #67 is where it begins with the original Suicide Squad, featuring characters like Bronze Tiger, Amanda Waller, and more, going head to head with the Secret Six… and the common theme? Deadshot. A prominent member of both teams, and both teams want him. Of course, there needs to be a reason for why this book carries the Blackest Night banner, and it’s in the shape of old school DC villain, The Fiddler. Yes. The Fiddler. Seriously. But, it works, we swear!

The story continues in SECRET SIX #17, and admittedly, feels much smoother than the rocky start of SUICIDE SQUAD #67. Gail Simone’s quirky characterization of the Secret Six really shines here, against the backdrop of the Black Lantern invasion. The brutality of the Black Lanterns is really taken up quite a few notches in both this and Suicide Squad 67, showing us some of the creepiest, most intense actions by the Black Lanterns yet. They’re savage as hell, and haven’t shown vicious streaks like this since Blackest Night #1. Caliafore’s art really brings the Lanterns to life.

This week, the storyline concludes in the pages of SECRET SIX #18 *BLACKEST NIGHT*, and all that needs to be said is Amanda Waller is unleashing a Manhunter on the Black Lanterns.

If you missed Suicide Squad 67, or Secret Six 17, don’t worry, we still have plenty of both in stock.

MESMO DELIVERY GRAPHIC NOVEL ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND DELIVERS ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING NEW STORIES I’VE SEEN! EX-BOXERS, ELVIS IMPERSONATORS,  AND SOME INCREDIBLE ART!

One thing that I take pride in here at Third Eye is we have a pretty good eye for new talent, and finding those real gems that could be often overlooked amongst the sensory overload of the monthly PREVIEWS catalog. The most recent of these killer finds, is the graphic novel MESMO DELIVERY by Rafael Grampa. This is something that I’ve been excited about since I first heard about it last year. The artwork is INCREDIBLE looking, and reminds me of a cross between Geoff Darrow and Paul Pope. And, the story concept sounds AWESOME.

What’s MESMO DELIVERY about? Mesmo Delivery is about a don’t ask, don’t tell delivery service that employs Sangrecco, an aging Elvis impersonator, and a retired boxer named Russo. From there, we follow the pair as they descend into a gritty, grungy hell of shady deals, and shadier characters. There’s some very cool storyline twists, and turns, so we’re trying not to say too much about the plot, because it’s one of those stories that pulls you in, and takes you to some very unexpected places. It’s a very cool action/horror kind of vibe that the book carries.  It almost reminds you of something like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, with the level of violence and consequences that apply to it.

Why we love it? Well, first off.. the artwork is INCREDIBLE. I mean, I think most of you guys can tell that I tend to pay more attention to writers than artists, but I do appreciate good art, and dude, Rafael Grampa has got it. The characters in the book are ugly, but in that noble way, where you can almost hear the sounds of Johnny Cash playing in the background as they crash through their twisted world. The characters are over-the-top, but the dialogue helps keep them grounded in believability. From the story, to the art, to the whole aesthetic of the book in general.. we can’t talk enough good about MESMO.

MESMO DELIVERY kind of feels like a weird cross between SCALPED and THE GOON. Gritty as hell, hardcore to the max, but, also, very much over-the-top. We can’t recommend this one enough folks, check it out this week!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #620 *THE GAUNTLET PT 9* THE RETURN OF MYSTERIO CONCLUDES HERE!

The Gauntlet storyline that’s been running through Spider-man has been top notch all the way through. There’s just something that’s cool about getting Spidey back to his roots, and reintroducing all the classic Spider-man villains we all grew up with. From the very start with the new twist on Electro, up through the new Rhino… it’s been good reads all the way through.

What is the Gauntlet? The Gauntlet is an over-arching themed storyline that’s running through AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. It began in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #512, and has consisted of two and three issue mini-story arcs reintroducing many of Spide-man’s deadliest classic Rogues (Sandman, Electro, Rhino, ect). The whole thing is leading up to the return of the Sinister Six, and is kind of a way of wearing Spidey down one by one, for the devastation that The Sinister Six will deliver en masse.

Want to catch up on THE GAUNTLET? Click here for the Third Eye Gauntlet Checklist. All issues are currently in stock here at Third Eye!

Now, onto the current story arc.. Mysterio! The reintroduction of MYSTERIO has been pretty badass, and the character is as vicious as he’s ever been. This Wednesday, we see the third and final chapter of Mysterio’s “introduction arc.” Marcos Martin’s artwork in this arc has been incredible, and Dan Slott has been able to deliver a very fresh, fast storyline that has kept us interested. In fact, I think that’s part of what has made the GAUNTLET so good is the rotating arcs have featured different creative team, giving each classic Spidey villain their own distinct feel, and energy. In other words, what works for Sandman, may not work for Rhino, and so on. We haven’t seen much of Mysterio, other than him acting as a behind-the-scenes puppet master, but we’re expecting in this week’s issue to see what’s up with his motivations, and renewed interest in the wallcrawler.

HELLBLAZER: PANDEMONIUM GRAPHIC NOVEL ARRIVES WEDNESDAY! BRAND NEW STORY! ORIGINAL WRITER JAMIE DELANO RETURNS TO CONSTANTINE WITH LOSERS ARTIST JOCK!

As long-time Hellblazer fans, we’re very excited about the news of original series writer, Jamie Delano, returning to Constantine’s world again. And, even better, is he’s paired up with the incredibly talented Jock for the art duties on the book. And, even better than better, is that the plot behind this new original graphic novel featuring everyone’s favorite con artist sounds pretty damn cool.

First off, Delano takes Constatine to a place he’s never been: Iraq. The ultimate anti-authoritorian, Constantine, has been somehow convinced (or coerced) by government agents to be their interrogation expert on a P.O.W who’s been driving all the other interrogators mad with some form of magic.

Delano carefully crafts a tale where the politics don’t get in the way of the story, but are still made relevant in regards to Constantine and his world. The real cool aspect of Constantine’s new surroundings is all of the interesting occultism, and mysticism that hasn’t really been explored that deeply before in the pages of Hellblazer.

Jock’s artwork fits the story perfectly, making it so you can almost feel the oppressive sunlight beating down on you, and feel the sand stinging your face. His art, and Delano’s story makes a perfect match, and the end result is a damn good Hellblazer story. Probably one of the best ones we’ve seen in a few years.

WARREN ELLIS’S NEXTWAVE ULTIMATE AGENTS OF H.A.T.E
COLLECTION TRADE PAPERBACK OUT THIS WEEK! ONE OF ELLIS’S BEST! HILARIOUS, WHACKED OUT, OVER-THE-TOP SUPERHERO SCI-FI MARVEL MADNESS!

Back in 2006, one of the best damn Marvel comics of this past decade was released. A rare fusion of over-the-top superhero awesomeness, twisted humor, bigger than life sci-fi madness, and of course, a generous helping of the inimitable Warren Ellis, Nextwave quickly rose to the top as one of those books that many comic fans hadn’t read, but anyone who had.. LOVED IT. Not just loved it, but we were fanatical about it. Talking about it in reverant tones. And now, after a couple years of the first volume trade paperback of this series being out of print, Marvel has put the complete series (volumes 1 and 2 of the trade paperbacks) together in one giant slab of awesome. So, lets talk a little about what the heck NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E is all about.

WHAT IS NEXTWAVE? NEXTWAVE was a series that was written in two issue story arcs.  Each issue starting with a humorous F.A.Q in which the questions are answered in enthusiastic, over-the-top, marketing language that goes into some strange and disturbing territories. This also helps introduce the characters to readers, as well as fleshing out the world for first-time readers. The actual NEXTWAVE team, AGENTS OF H.A.T.E, is composed of several minor, third-string Marvel characters, like  Monica Rambeau, the former Captain Marvel, Tabitha Smith, formerly known as Boom Boom / Meltdown from X-FORCE, Aaron Stack, the Machine Man, Elsa Bloodstone, the Monster Hunter, and a brand new character only known as The Captain (formerly known as CAPTAIN ####, but apparently the words were so horrible that, allegedly, Captain America beat the hell out of him, and left him in a dumpster with a bar of soap in his mouth). This team are known as H.A.T.E, which stands for Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort, and are tasked with fighting U.W.M.D (Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction). Once the team finds out they’re funded by S.I.L.E.N.T, a terrorist group, they pack their bags, and hightail it in the Shockwave Rider. They fly around, getting into messes, destroying U.W.M.Ds S.I.L.E.N.T has planted all around the country as H.A.T.E commander Dirk Anger (a parody of NICK FURY) pursues them.
The U.W.M.Ds include Fin Fang Foom, Broccoli Men, Ultra-Samurai, and the Mindless Ones.

Why We Love NEXTWAVE? Warren Ellis once described his process on NEXTWAVE as being the Authtority stripped of all logic, and insanity. He said it’s an absolute distillation of the superhero genre, and said that he was going for a series that was 100%, pure, unadulterated comic book mayhem and fun. People kicking people, and exploding.  And, this, this is why we love NEXTWAVE. It’s funny as hell, violent as hell, and has an insane energy that literally leaps off of each and every page. The dialogue, of course, is on point, and sharp as hell, with Ellis putting his distinct flavor on both that and the high-action storytelling. The characterization is quirky as hell, but awesome. Machine Man as an alcohol-chugging, human-hating jaded, bitter robot, Boom Boom talking in internet speak, and memes, and more make the cast really shine. And, then there’s the flashbacks, where we see characters like Captain America, Ulysses Bloodstone, and The Celestials acting comedically out of character. NEXTWAVE feels like a weird cross between bigger than life Silver Age MARVEL COMICS, post-modern superhero storytelling like THE AUTHORITY and the ULTIMATES, an internet forum where people post pictures of cats in zany messes, and a 16-bit shoot’em up video game.

In other words, NEXTWAVE is awesome.

This Wednesday, we’ll have the complete NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E ULTIMATE COLLECTION trade paperback available here at Third Eye, and if you just flat out enjoy good comics, we recommend picking it up.

CHOKER #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* – BRAND NEW HARDBOILED CRIME NOIR MINI-SERIES FROM BEN TEMPLESMITH (artist on FELL, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, ect). FANS OF FELL CHECK THIS OUT!

One of our favorite artists here at THIRD EYE is BEN TEMPLESMITH. He’s done an incredible amount of stuff, including the modern classic series FELL, the horror series that spawned a franchise 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, the DEAD SPACE comics, and much, much more. His style is unique, fresh, and very cool.. and it’s a perfect fit for crime noir series, as showcased by FELL.

This is why we’re so freakin’ stoked about his brand new series CHOKER from IMAGE COMICS. The story of CHOKER features Johnny “CHOKER” Jackson, who was once one of SHOTGUN CITY’s most promising police officers, and is now a bitter private detective. And, now he’s been offered his job back on the force, provided he can nail a twisted drug dealer that’s selling a very exclusive product. Oh, and he’s got a terrible case of something called Alien Hand Syndrome.

Judging from the preview pages we’ve seen, this one looks very promising as an exploration of a dirty, filthy city brimming with corruption and despair. The perfect setting for a good crime noir comic. And, while the premise does seem very familiar, considering we’re all very big fans of FELL, we’re sure it’s got a much different twist than Fell, not to mention the storytelling of FELL is very much dependant upon the unique format Ellis uses for it. In other words, this is a fresh new crime noir book that is going to kick seven different kinds of ass. Templesmith has proven in the past he’s got a good knack for plotting, and his artwork speaks for itself.

GRANT MORRISON’S ALL-STAR SUPERMAN VOLUME 2 TRADE PAPERBACK AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

The second half of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s (the creative team that launched the current hit series, BATMAN AND ROBIN) ALL-STAR SUPERMAN arrives this Wednesday in softcover, and it’s definitely a big deal. While it’s been almost a year since the actual hardcover of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN v.2 arrived, we do know that some of you have been waiting for the second volume to hit softcover, and we’re sure you’re gonna be stoked to finish up this epic run.

Morrison’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN is probably one of the best takes on the Man of Tomorrow we’ve ever read. This storyline came out back before Geoff Johns had shown us why Superman can be cool, and we can proudly say that this series was the first in opening the door to us really appreciating the character of SUPERMAN. From the storytelling to the artwork, it’s top notch all the way through. Not familiar with ALLSTAR SUPERMAN? Here’s the skinny..

What’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN all about? Grant Morrison did something that, at the time, was impossible. He showed us how cool the Silver Age was, and how cool those concepts could be. In this 12 issue limited series, Morrison stripped the Man of Steel down to his timeless, iconic appeal, and showed us why he is one of the best comic book characters of all time. The story? Superman is dying of what is essentially a super-cancer, and each issue deals with him tying up his affairs and leaving the world in the best shape possible that he can.

Basically, when a team of scientists on a mission to explore the sun ends up in danger, Superman swoops in to save the day from a genetically enhanced clone of Lex Luthor. Luthor, of course, has orchestrated all of this to overwhelm Superman’s cells with a massive amount of solar radiation, giving him the power to project his bioelectric aura, but also overloading his cells.. and leaving him with one year to live. Superman hides his impending death from the public, but embarks on a 12 issue journey to wrap up his affairs. Moments ranging from his reveal of his secret identity to Lois, and the design of a “Super” suit for her to be like him for a day, to the death of Pa Kent, all make for very heart-touching moments in Superman lore. The series more or less takes the Silver Age quirkiness of the old Superman comics, and puts a modern day spin on it, making for a really cool read. You see that some of the things that make Superman great are the bigger than life scenarios he ends up finding himself in. The story is all set within it’s own continuity, allowing Morrison to do exactly what he wishes with the story, and making the story stand alone as a solid piece of storytelling.

Simply put, this is one of the best Superman stories of all time, and even if you HATE the character.. we guarantee that by the end of the first chapter of the first trade paperback, you’ll end up in love with the whole concept of Superman and the world he exists in.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN volume 1 trade paperback is currently in stock now at Third Eye, and volume 2 will be available in softcover this Wednesday.

“WONDERLAND” PUBLISHERS ZENESCOPE UNVEIL NEW SERIES: SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY ILLUSTRATED #1 THIS WEDNESDAY!

The fine folks at Zenescope who’ve brought you twisted renditions of the Alice in Wonderland sagas, and now currently, with their dark take on the world of NEVERLAND, have brought us a brand new series in addition to their library, in the shape of SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY ILLUSTRATED. This new series takes classic Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories, and ideas, but adds a brand new twist to them, and of course, the killer cutting edge artwork of Zenescope’s impressive roster of artists.

It looks to be a throwback to the old pulp fiction tales of way back when, but with a modern twist, and judging from Zenescope’s track record on stuff like Wonderland, and Grimm Fairy Tales, this one should be a fun, tongue-in-cheek twist on some great sci-fi yarns.

PUNISHERMAX #4 CONTINUES JASON AARON’S (writer of SCALPED) BRUTAL, UNRELENTING RUN ON THE PUNISHER! THE BEST PUNISHER RUN SINCE GARTH ENNIS’S MAX RUN CONTINUES! ENTER: BULLSEYE!

Every issue of Jason Aaron’s new run on PUNISHERMAX takes the level of brutality up another notch. We thought he couldn’t top issue #2, but he totally did with some of the ridiculous, brutality that was in issue #3. We were definitely of the school of thought that when Garth Ennis’s character-defining 60 issue run on PUNISHER ended, there wasn’t much left to  say, but we were wrong. Aaron has taken the ball that Ennis left behid, and ran with it. The series feels like it’s picked up shortly after the end of Ennis’s run, and carries the same tone perfectly.

In addition, Aaron has added a lot of interesting new dynamics to the world of PUNISHER MAX, including the introduction of characters like Kingpin into the gritty, realistic world of PUNISHER MAX.

For those of you unfamiliar with the world of PUNISHER MAX, it’s basically a separate continuity from the regular 616 Marvel Universe. There are no superpowers in this world, and the Punisher mostly goes head to head with real criminals ranging from the Mafia to Russian slavers to war criminals and more. Existing Marvel characters are introduced at some points, but they’re chosen only by being within the bounds of believability (i.e Kingpin, or Nick Fury), and their superhuman attributes are downplayed (no Nick Fury jetpacks, no Kingpin kung fu).

And, this is the perfect setting for a character like the Punisher, who’s portrayed as more of a lone sociopath, in the vein of Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle, than a rocket-launcher toting superman.

And, in this week’s latest issue of PUNISHERMAX, it looks like we might be seeing just how the MAX version of Bullseye operates. Should be awesome.

Wanna catch up on PUNISHER MAX? We currently have plenty of issues 1, 2 and 3 in stock here at Third Eye.

DAYTRIPPER #3 CONTINUES VERTIGO’S KILLER NEW SERIES!

One of the best new Vertigo series we’ve seen in some time is DAYTRIPPER from the team of Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. This series, only three issues in, has proved to be one of the most poignant slice-of-life tales we’ve seen in quite some time… with a very cool twist on the everyday trials and tribulations of a young obituary writer who feels he’s not living up to the standards he’s set of himself.

I don’t want to give away too much for those of you who haven’t read the first issue yet, but it’s got a very shocking ending, and then from there goes into some very unexpected territory in issue #2. For those of you who did read #2, then you can see the direction the story’s taking, which while different from what I had expected.. is very cool.. showing us the past of the main character, Bras.

I think what’s kind of unique about Daytripper is also what makes it kind of hard to explain… it’s a complete mystery, but in a good way. The writing and art is so good that you almost could care less about what the story is ABOUT, and you just kind of let it pull you in, and carry you where the story’s going. Moon and Ba obviously have many surprises up their sleeves with this one, and we feel that each issue is going to continue to confirm what we thought from the start: this series is going to be something special.

If you’re not yet reading Daytripper, and enjoy stuff that captures the small moments in life well, while still weaving a compelling tale, then we highly recommend checking it out. We currently have plenty of issues #1, and issue #2 in stock, so catch up to issue #3 this week here at Third Eye.

THE ANCHOR #5 and THE ANCHOR TP v.1 (collecting issues 1-4, only $9.99) ARRIVE THIS WEEK FROM BOOM! (publishers of IRREDEEMABLE & INCORRUPTIBLE) – HELLBOY MEETS KAIJU MONSTER FIGHTING INSANITY!

One very cool, little sleeper book that started late last year was BOOM!’s ANCHOR ongoing series. This book has been a lot of fun, and takes a couple of standard comic book ideas (a holy avenger, a giant monster fighter, ect ect) and puts a fresh new spin on them. The story of the Anchor is that of a hulking beast of a man who was taken in by a monastery many years ago, and turned into what the series creators have called “God’s Leg Breaker.”

Basically, the Anchor lives a dual existence, half of him (his soul) in the Borderlands guarding Earth from Demons that try to escape to Earth, and the other half (his body) doing a very similar job for those demons that actually do escape to Earth. While at first look, you might think the series is just a Hellboy rip-off, but it’s really got it’s own thing going on. While Hellboy plays up more of a mystery, occultism angle, and exploration of folklore and myth, the Anchor is much more of a big hulking avenging monstrosity beating the snot out of giant monsters kind of thing.

The artwork makes the series pop, and the colors especially give the book a very fresh feel. It really feels like somebody took the elements of something like Hellboy, and crossed it with every Ultraman or Godzilla movie you could think of.

This week, Boom, who’s really built a solid reputation for itself on books like IRREDEEMABLE, and INCORRUPTIBLE, delivers both the first trade paperback of THE ANCHOR (collecting issues 1-4), and then the 5th issue, providing readers who may have not yet jumped onto the series the perfect time to hop aboard. All in all, it’s a really fun series, and if you’re into stuff like Hellboy, the Goon, or just a fan of seeing giant monsters getting the hell out beat out of them, then we recommend it. Great art, great story, this one’s definitely an overlooked gem.

X-MEN: PIXIE STRIKES BACK FEATURES FAN-FAVORITE X-CHICKS X-23, ARMOR, AND PIXIE!

This one caught my eye, because of two things: 1) The cover is great. Stuart Immonen does some of the best covers, seriously. 2) It’s featuring three X-Characters that are what I’d consider relatively new (all three being created during the 2000s), and all three being pretty cool characters. It’s funny too, because just the other night I was having a conversation with someone here at the shop about how the X-Books always try to shoehorn in new characters, and very rarely do they stick. Well, looking at the cover of this book, it looks like I’ve proven myself wrong, because X-23, Armor, and Pixie are all “new” characters that not only have “stuck” but have really won over loyal fan-followings.

Personally, I dig X-23. I think she’s a great character, and when she was first introduced, I thought I’d hate the character, but it turned out that the writers behind her had a good idea, and it worked. And, then Armor, of course, is also a very cool character, who by the end of Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run, had won me over. Plus, you’ve got Pixie, who a lot of fans really dig, Mercury, and Blindfold, who’re also both pretty cool.

Anyways, what the hell is this one all about you’re probably wondering? Well, it’s a 4 issue limited series where this rag-tag bunch of X-Girls face something they’re not exactly prepared for: High School. Kathryn Immonen did a great job I thought writing the Hellcat mini last year, so it should be cool to see how this one plays out.

Staff Picks
Steve – DEMO #1 – This was AWESOME. It was a strong tie between this and SIEGE #2, but I figured since Torma was already doing SIEGE 2, this would win out. The first issue of DEMO delivered everything I hoped, and it shows why Brian Wood is one of the greats.
Trish – Legends: Enchanted - This was awesome! Jack rides a motorcycle powered by giant blood. Red Riding Hood’s a monster hunter. A real cool steampunk horror take on fairy-tale worlds.
Torma – SIEGE #2 - TOTAL MAYHEM. This is one of the best comics Ive read this year so far. I’ve always liked the Sentry, but this issue proves why he’s such a badass.
Matt – The Boys #39- One of the best issues in this series yet. This book continues to be one of my favorites every month.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 12/9/09

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #614 *THE GAUNTLET PT 3* CONTINUES THE BEST SPIDER-MAN STORY WE’VE SEEN IN YEARS!

This week, the third part of the GAUNTLET arrives, and we gotta tell you guys… two issues in, and this storyline is already shaping up to be one of the best Spidey arcs we’ve seen. Before I get into talking about what’s to come, let me give everyone the scoop on what the Gauntlet is all about.

Everything You Need To Know About The Gauntlet: The Gauntlet is a big storyline running through the pages of Amazing Spider-man which is essentially being told to re-introduce Spider-man’s most iconic villains, as the new Sinister Six. Each mini-chapter of the Gauntlet is 2-3 issues long, and focuses on not only bringing back and re-vamping the classic villains in Spidey’s Rogues Gallery, but also shows him getting put through the ringer by them. And, since this is happening for the entirety of the storyline, villain after villain, hence the name… The Gauntlet.

The Gauntlet began in Amazing Spider-man #612, which serves as the perfect entry point to jump on with. In other words, if it’s been years since you’ve read Spidey (and I know there’s quite a few of you who have because of all the wackiness of One More Day), then Amazing Spider-man #612 is a great spot to come in.

This first story arc has been focusing on Electro, who we really haven’t seen much of since the early days of the New Avengers. Electro, who is now older, and is seeing his powers become very erratic, has kind of given himself a new meaning in life. First off, it’s been mentioned that his powers are now haywire due to his age and metabolism changing, and becauuse of that, Electro has become a downtrodden shadow of his former self. Secondly, he’s broke, due to losing most of his (ill-gotten) funds in the economic meltdown of 2008. And, now, his anger is being vented at the execs and bankers that were taken care of in the bailout. So, you have this very interesting approach to Electro as a folk hero, a man of the people, being taken. But, he’s still blowing people up with electricity, and of course, Spidey has to stop him. And, that’s what’s made this so interesting because it casts Spidey once again in the role of outsider. The people who see Electro as a sort of working class hero despise Spidey for his interference, and you once again see Spidey in that role of well-intentioned outcast hero that fits him so well.

The third chapter of the Gauntlet ships this week, and then I believe the next villain on the agenda is going to be the Rhino, or Sandman, I can’t recall. Either way, this storyline has been awesome, and has tons of potential to continue to do so.

It’s early enough to still catch up, so if you haven’t already hopped aboard the Gauntlet, we recommend grabbing a copy of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612, and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #613 to hop aboard.

A BLACKEST NIGHT ENCORE THIS WEEK AT THIRD EYE WITH FOUR BLACKEST NIGHT TIE-IN ISSUES! ADVENTURE COMICS #5BOOSTER GOLD #27REBELS #11, AND DOOM PATROL #5

Blackest Night has been delivering some high caliber storytelling in the form of the various tie-in issues that carry the Blackest Night banner. And, last month, we saw some killer storylines spark up from the Blackest Night in the pages of books like Booster Gold and REBELS.

Now, before I go any further, let me say that I was totally blown away by how much I enjoyed REBELS. I really wasn’t expecting anything special from it, and had my sights set on Booster as being the coolest of these tie-in issues, but man, REBELS is a good book. I liked the tie-in so much I went back and read the previous issues to the series, and this is an overlooked gem. I’m not even that big of a Legion fan, and I really dig it. C’mon, Brainiac as a Sinestro Corps Member? How cool is that? The story continues this week in the pages of REBELS #11

Another favorite was the recent issue of ADVENTURE COMICS, with the return of SUPERBOY PRIME. Who doesn’t love SUPERBOY PRIME? He’s such an obnoxious bastard, that you can’t help but enjoy seeing him involved in things. Of course, it’s been satisfying seeing Prime getting his butt handed to him by the Black Lanterns, but it’s going to be even more exciting to see how he lashes back at the Black Lanterns. And of course, the fact that Adventure Comics has been kick-ass since issue #1 helps us get exciteda bout this.. I’m sure the fact that Geoff Johns is writing it doesn’t hurt either. Everything continues this week in ADVENTURE COMICS #5

Next up on the agenda isBOOSTER GOLD #27, which picks up the storyline of the Blackest Night tie-in I had most anticipated. The Return of Ted Kord (the original Blue Beetle) as a Black Lantern. Not only do we get to see the ol’ Blue Beetle chomping hearts, but we get some decent character development for the new Blue Beetle. So, we’re eager to see how things get followed up this week in the next part of the Booster Gold Blackest Night tie-in.

And, then finally, the Blackest Night’s effects on Doom Patrol are explored in the pages of this week’s DOOM PATROL #5. Now, to be honest, this and Outsiders were probably my least favorite of the Blackest Night “ring” tie-in books, but I will say that the Kevin Macguire Metal Men back-up story has kept me coming back each month to Doom Patrol. Should be interesting though to see where things go with this next issue of Doom Patrol.

PUNISHERMAX #2 FROM SCALPED WRITER JASON AARON & PREACHER ARTIST STEVE DILLON CONTINUES THE BEST PUNISHER WE’VE SEEN SINCE GARTH ENNIS! HAVEN’T CHECKED IT OUT YET? WE STILL HAVE ISSUE #1 IN STOCK TO HOP ABOARD!

The new PUNISHER MAX series from Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon kicked off with an incredible first issue. Flat out, just from one issue, I can tell that this is the BEST Punisher run I’ve seen since Garth Ennis’s classic 60-issue MAX series. And, I think the fact that Jason Aaron is writing it, has a lot to do with that. Jason Aaron is the man behind what I think is the best Vertigo series hitting the shelves: SCALPED. He brings his hardboiled, gritty true crime sensibilities to the world of the Punisher, and you literally feel as if this story has picked up right where Ennis’s epic Punisher run left off.

Okay, so, lets get to the meat of things, and talk about what PUNISHER MAX is, and what the new PUNISHERMAX series is about. First off…

What’s the difference between PUNISHER MAX and THE PUNISHER?Punisher MAX is a self-contained world, set outside of normal Marvel continuity where the character is treated much differently. The world of Punisher MAX does not have superpowered individuals, and in fact, it’s very rare that Marvel characters show up in this world. When they do show up, it’s always characters that are easily grounded in reality. In other words, you’ll see a Cold War warhorse like Nick Fury, smoking a cigar and drinking scotch. The world of PUNISHER MAX is very much rooted in reality, and the thing that makes it so damn unique is it’s approach to the character of the PUNISHER. A lot of this is due in part to Garth Ennis’s development of the character. In Punisher MAX, the Punisher is portrayed like a hybrid mix of the classic remorseless stranger (ala MAN WITH NO NAME from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, ect) and borderline sociopaths on a mission like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. He’s written as a man who served in Vietnam, and it shows that he’s in his 50s. He’s a bulky, scarred up, ugly man who says very little, and kills without a second thought. And, in the world of PUNISHER MAX, it’s the silent killer persona that’s helped bring the Punisher back from the lameness of ’90s Punisher (you know, when he was running around with rocket launchers, jetpacks, and demon-killing shotguns).

In the world of Punisher MAX, there’s no supervillains, just real-life bad guys. So, it means that you see Castle going up against everything from the Mafia (whether it’s the classic Italian Mob, the Irish Mob, or the Russian Mob) to corrupt CIA officials to ENRON.

So, what’s the story then on this new PUNISHER MAX series? Well, the first issue provides one of the best jumping on points for a new series that I’ve seen in a while. Whether you fell off of Punisher MAX with the end of Ennis’s run, have never read a Punisher story in your life, or have been following the book between the end of Ennis’s run and now, Aaron’s first issue was a well-written entry point. The basic plot, other than the back to basics approach of returning to the spirit of Ennis’s stuff, is the introduction of The Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) to the MAX world.

In the first issue, we see the remnants of the Mafia gathering to figure out what to do as their empire slowly crumbles, and the Punisher is one of the biggest contributing factors. It turns out that a low-level enforcer, that’s not a “made” guy, has come up with the plan of having a figurehead, a kingpin, put into place to give the Punisher something to gun for. You know, taking the whole old school mafia myth about a boss of bosses to an extreme. And of course, that figurehead, would be this young enforcer. I think you can see where this is going.

Stand-out moments from the first issue? The Kingpin popping a guy’s eyes out of his head. Said guy shoving his eyes back into his head, and then getting his head blown off right as he says “I can almost see..”. And, of course, that killer last shot of the Kingpin passing up the perfect opportunity to take out the Punisher, which clues us into his true motives.

This week, the second issue comes out, and it continues the storyline, and as you guys can tell, I’m excited about this one. If you haven’t checked it out already, I’d highly recommend giving it a read.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #21 *STARK DISASSEMBLED CHAPTER 2* CONTINUES THE MUST-READ IRON MAN STORY OF THE DECADE! NEED TO CATCH UP? WE STILL HAVE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #20 *STARK DISASSEMBLED CHAPTER 1* IN STOCK!

It’s been no secret that ever since Fraction and Larocca relaunched the Armored Avenger in Invincible Iron Man, I’ve been a fan. This entire run has been a solid as hell, and I’m telling you guys… if you haven’t been reading Iron Man, then now is the time to start. Invincible Iron Man #20 served as the perfect jumping on point for new readers, and judging from how a lot of you who picked it up (without having read prior issues), I’d say that it was a pretty big hit with you guys. And, I’m glad, because some books are so damn good, they deserve to be read. But, the new arc that began two weeks ago in Invincible Iron Man #20 is something that anyone with even the slightest interest in ol’ Shellhead should be reading.

Lets recap real quick, and get you those of you who haven’t started reading the book yet up to speed… Tony Stark, a fugitive under Norman Osborn’s reign, finally gives in, and pretty much turns himself into a vegetable to keep Osborn from getting what’s in his brain. And, now, it’s up to his friends and associates (ranging from Pepper Potts to Bucky Captain America) to bring him back…. IF they want to. See, that’s where the first chapter of this was so interesting. Tony Stark, has pre-recorded a hologram message and left it inside the Iron Woman armor, and in it, he talks about the last half a decade of Marvel history, more or less. He talks about the Civil War, the Secret Invasion, and he says… this is how you can bring me back, but after everything, DO YOU WANT TO? And, then comes three of the most heartfelt funnybook pages I’ve read, Third Eye Faithful. Tony Stark comparing Thor and Captain America to a higher power, and then breaking into a defiant speech of how to topple the reign of Osborn… it’s not often that sequences are written so well that they move you, but, man, that was a moving moment. Of course, aside from the standout moment of “the speech”, there’s a very interesting subplot with Madame Masque making plans to have Stark’s comatose body exterminated. And, all of this, serves as a very nice prelude to the events of SIEGE (which is said to have one major goal of reuniting the Marvel Trinity of Cap, Thor, and Iron Man).

Anyways, that brings us up to speed on Stark: Disassembled, and now we can talk about what we think might be going down in this week’s issue. See, Tony’s closest friends, allies, and loved ones have all banded together to bring the man back… but, now the question is, does he want to come back? All of this, AND, a hit squad sent to execute the nearly-gone body of Tony Stark, means that this should be one hell of an action-packed issue.

So, folks, if you’re Marvel fans, and aren’t already reading the Invincible Iron Man, we really recommend giving picking up INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #20, which serves as an excellent jumping on point to the series and this new story arc. Find out why month in, and month out, this is one of the most consistently high quality ongoing series Marvel has going. Same writer, same artist, for nearly two years… that’s gotta tell you something!

And, for those of you that picked up Invincible Iron Man #20 a couple weeks ago and loved it, be sure to check out:

Invincible Iron Man Volume 1: The Five Nightmares Trade Paperback (in stock now at Third Eye)
Invincible Iron Man Volume 2: World’s Most Wanted (in stock now at Third Eye)

And, we have all the single issues that pick up after the second trade too, for those of you who can’t get enough of Fraction’s incredible take on the Armored Avenger.

NATION X #1 DELIVERS EVERY FRIGGIN X-MAN YOU COULD THINK OF AND THEN SOME!

Whether it’s heavy-hitters like Wolverine and Colossus or fan-favorites like Magik and Nightcrawler, it looks like everyone’s crawling out of the woodwork for this four issue limited series that’s going to explore the brand new mutant nation that’s been created on UTOPIA.

The preview pages on this one look sharp, and while I have a love/hate relationship with the X-Books, I gotta admit the X-Fan in me is excited to check this one out. Sometimes you just want to see all your favorites from back in the day crammed into one slab of awesomeness, and judging from the cover alone, we’re definitely going to get that.

NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #3 – HAWKEYE GETS RESCUED FROM OSBORN BY THE LADIES OF THE NEW AVENGERS!

This one-shot Annual issue of the New Avengers is awesome for two reasons: A) it picks up where DARK REIGN THE LIST AVENGERS one-shot left off, with Hawkeye being locked down and on the list of execution by Norman Osborn, and B) it’s got the rarely seen interior artwork of the incredibly talented artist Mike Mayhew.

Seriously though, I think we’ve all been waiting to see how ol’ Clint Barton was going to end up after the events of DARK REIGN THE LIST AVENGERS, and it’s nice to see some closure to that story in this issue.

The plot? Basically, since most of the Avengers are all left with their handsfull, the ladies of the Avengers have banded together to break into Osborn’s fortress, and break Hawkeye (Clint Barton) free.

And of course, it’s written by Bendis, so you know it’s going to be up to that same level of quality that we get every month with the New Avengers.

Click here for a preview of NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #3! Just take a look at how awesome the interior art looks too!

X-NECROSHA: THE GATHERING ONE-SHOT EXPLORES THE ORIGINS OF THE BLACK QUEEN’S HIT SQUAD… AND ANSWERS THE QUESTION: HOW IS BLINK ALIVE?

The stuff that Kyle and Yost have been doing with X-Force for the last few years has been incredible. They’ve really carved out a corner of the Marvel Universe where good stand alone X-stories are told, and still give you the doses you want out of your favorite characters.

It’s kind of unfortunate that their event, Necrosha, bears some resemblances to the biggest storyline happening right now, because it really has been a good read. We know, both stories feature characters returning from the dead as vengeful messengers of death, but that’s where the similarities end. Necrosha is much more of an X-Men story, which brings us mutants and characters we have not seen in over a decade.

Dropping this week, we’ll be seeing the Necrosha: Gathering one-shot which delves into the origins of the Black Queen’s death squad, and of course, reveals just what Blink (the fan favorite from Exiles and Age of Apocalypse) is doing a live.

If you were a fan of the X-Books in the ’90s, do youreslf a favor and try Necrosha, it’s the perfect storyline to come aboard the X-Force book with.

DEADPOOL #18 *DEADPOOL JOINS THE X-MEN PT 3!*  – NATION X TIE-IN

Everyone’s favorite wise-cracking mass-murdering mercenary continues his trials and tribulations of finding a place where he belongs. Seriously though, the whole Deadpool joins the X-Men story arc that’s been going down the last couple of issues has been one of the best arcs in the series since he threw down with Bullseye. The fact that Paco Medina has returned to the art chores on this arc is probably a big contributing factor to why it’s been so good.

Of course, Deadpool’s ongoing series is always strong stuff, and lets be real: it’s hard to say no to more Deadpool. He’s the fourth-wall breaking, schizo-madman that we’ve all come to know and love.

So anyways, Cyclops has let ol’ Deadpool play ball, but instead of giving him the keys to the kingdom, he’s had Domino monitoring him in San Francisco. Of course, Deadpool’s been up to no good all along, or has he? Either way, it looks like some serious bad mojo is going down, and he’ll be at the center of it.

If you missed out on Deadpool 16, or 17, worry not, cause we still have ‘em in stock for you to catch up!

DARK X-MEN #2 “THE RETURN OF NATE GREY!”- A SURPRISE HIT! THE FIRST ISSUE OF THIS LIMITED SURPRISED US BIG TIME, AND NOW WE’RE STOKED TO SEE THE SECOND!

Anyone remember X-MAN? If you’re like me, and grew up in the ’90s devouring every X-Men comic that came your way, then the adventures of Nate Grey were a prominent fixture in your life. It seems like with a lot of us when we’re young, we’re brought into comics by prominent comic events. For me, it was Age of Apocalypse, and when that ended… all I had was X-Man to give me my AoA fix, but hell, I dug it. And, I’m pretty damn stoked to see the return of Nate Grey.

It doesn’t hurt that the first issue of Dark X-Men really knocked it out of the park. I think this one flew under the radar for a lot of you, probably due to the overload of Dark Reign stuff, but trust me, it’s actually a really good read.

Dark X-Men #1 did a good job of moving things forward in the whole idea of a team of mutants working under Osborn’s employ. But, the book focuses less on the whole Dark Reign aspect of things, and Osborn, and more on the actual idea of a team composed of rogue mutants, and some very memorable faces that we haven’t seen in quite some time. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of a book like Dark X-Men could be easily exploited as a cheap one-trick pony, but the talented creative team of Cornell and Kirk pulled it off in a very refreshing way.

Anyways, the team is composed of Mimic, Mystique, and Weapon Omega, oh, and of course, Dark Beast (another Age of Apocalypse favorite). Cornell manages to put a fun, fresh spin on each of the characters, and gives what could be a very lame line-up (I mean, c’mon, when Mystique is your big name, that’s not exactly an all-star supersquad), an awesome approach. Their’s a great sense of humor at the core of the book, and it’s the genuine ineptitude of the characters and their difficulty functioning as a team that makes the book such a refreshing read. Leonard Kirk’s expressive artwork really does add a lot, and I think if the book had been done by anyone other than this duo, it could’ve been “just another Dark Reign” book.

Oh, and, of course… this issue, we get to see them going up against Nate Grey, the X-Man. As I said above, I have a soft spot for this character, and I’m really glad to see such a cool character getting tossed back into the spotlight.

Great team dynamics, bigger than life craziness. Give Dark X-Men a shot, if you’re an X-Fan at all, or if you just enjoy a fun, quirky trip into the Marvel Universe. We still have plenty of #1 in stock, so try it out.

GOD COMPLEX #1 DELIVERS AN INTERESTING TAKE ON THE GREEK GODS OF MYTH LIIVING AMONG US IN MODERN TIMES! FROM “POWERS” CO-CREATOR MICHAEL AVON OEMING

Here’s one that sports a truly neat concept: What happens when you’re the son of Zeus, and Zeus wants you dead? You go into hiding amongst the world of mortal man. This is the story of Apollo, you know, the Greek God, and how he’s sought out refuge in the world of man.

Of course, Apollo’s pops, Zeus, and the other Greek Gods are looking to bring some serious death down on him, so this could make things problematic.

I haven’t gotten a whole lot of information on this one, other than the core concept, but the preview pages look cool, and the fact that Michael Avon Oeming is involved is a big plus (Powers is one of my personal favorites.)

It looks like this little take on the world of Greek gods, and monsters could be a fresh, new Image book worth checking out.

BRAND NEW VERTIGO SERIES, DAYTRIPPER, BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY FROM UMBRELLA ACADEMY ARTIST GABRIEL BA

Daytripper looks pretty damn cool. Kinda trippy, and definitely one of those Vertigo books that it’s hard for me to distill into a few words. But, the fact that we’re getting Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon (two up and coming creators who deliver the goods on everything from the cult favorite CASANOVA to the mega-hit UMBRELLA ACADEMY) heading up this brand new original limited series, it tells us this one could be a really good read.

This is the story of Bras De Oliva Domingos, an obituary writer with a famous father, a career he hates, and tons of questions about life. How does he reach his goal of becoming a successful writer? How does he get out of his father’s shadow? But these questions are nothing to the giant surprise twist in his life that he sees at the end of the first issue. Something that us, or him, will never see coming.

Sounds pretty cool? Check out the preview ofDAYTRIPPER #1 by clickinghere.

STAFF PICKS

Trish – The Sword #20 – STILL my favorite book! They might be slow in coming out, but each issue is better than the last!

Torma – Fall of the Hulks Alpha - Total mayhem! A great look at all the different “scientist”-type characters of the Marvel Universe. From the obvious (Dr. Doom) to the obscure (Egghead). Awesome start to this mini-event.

Steve – SIEGE: THE CABAL #1 – I know its the biggest one of last week, but the set-up in this issue for SIEGE has me stoked. I am a big time Avengers fan, and every page, and every panel of this one has me stoked.

This Week’s Highlights @ Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 11/11/09

PUNISHER MAX #1 – JASON AARON (WRITER OF VERTIGO’S SCALPED & WOLVERINE: WEAPON X) BRINGS US WHAT COULD BE THE BEST PUNISHER ARC SINCE GARTH ENNIS ENDED HIS MAX RUN! **THIRD EYE MUST BUY**

There are defining runs on characters that are so good that it’s nearly impossible to top them. In the earlier part of this decade, Garth Ennis, critically acclaimed writer of classics like PREACHER and currently tearing it up on series like THE BOYS, was responsible for doing one of those runs on the Punisher with PUNISHER MAX. In the world of PUNISHER MAX, Frank Castle is closer to a serial murderer (albeit a righteous one, sort of like Dexter, or cinema madmen like TAXI DRIVER’S Travis Bickle) than the bazooka-toting super-vigilante he is in the Marvel 616 universe (not saying we don’t like that version of the Punisher either). Ennis defined the character, giving him a rich back story that showed his nature as the Punisher was truly born in the jungles of Vietnam, long before his family was murdered. He gave us a long, reaching plot that ran through the entire series, and was carried by subplots involving strictly REAL criminals. No supervillains, no theatrics, but real life bad guys like Russian slavers, the Irish Mafia, an Enron-esque cabal of white collar criminals, and more.

When Ennis left the book, there was definitely a void. Several talented noir-influenced storytellers picked up after him, and did a respectable job, but no one ever brought things to that level of raw, gritty madness that Ennis did. And, in the back of our heads, we kept thinking “you know, Scalped is probably the best Vertigo book we’re following, and Jason Aaron is able to tell a grimy, shades of gray story so well… he’d be perfect.” And, then, it was announced that he’d be relaunching PUNISHER MAX with Preacher artist Steve Dillon.

Dude. We are so stoked for this new run it’s not even funny. First off, the world of PUNISHER MAX is completely self-contained. You need no prior knowledge of the character, or his stories, to jump into this. All you need to know is the Punisher is a fractured, remorseless human being that murders those who he sees as bad people. No wrongs, no rights, just one man on a mission to make the world sane. Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon look to be the perfect match to make this series sing again, and we really can’t wait to see their approach in this new ongoing series. The other landmark to this? It introduces the character of Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, to the world of Punisher MAX. This is a big deal, because Kingpin is really only the second or third 616 Marvel character that’s been given the MAX treatment (and Ennis’s take on Nick Fury was AWESOME). It looks like this new series starts off with Fisk working as a bodyguard for a mob boss, but Fisk is a big man with big ambitions, and he has plans to manipulate The Punisher into achieving those goals. This is going to be the biggest Punisher MAX series since Ennis ended his run, and we HIGHLY recommend it.

Fans of gritty, crime noir storytelling like CRIMINAL, INCOGNITO, SCALPED, 100 BULLETS, and of course, Ennis’s run on Punisher MAX are advised to give this one a look. It’s going to be violent. It’s going to be brutal. And, with the creative team they’ve got on board.. it’s going to be one hell of a well-written, well-illustrated story.

SUPERGOD #1 TAKES THE IDEA OF WATCHMEN, IRREDEEMABLE, AND THE BOYS TO IT’S MOST VIOLENT, AND DARKEST EXTREME! FROM AVATAR PRESS, PUBLISHERS OF CROSSED, AND COMICS LEGEND WARREN ELLIS **THIRD EYE MUST BUY**

The one thing that it’s obvious we all enjoy here at Third Eye is the deconstruction of the superhero arch-type. Don’t ask me why, but ever since I was just a kid and stumbling across books like Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and the often-overlooked Brat Pack, I’ve had a real soft spot for this stuff. When I first heard mention of SUPERGOD, I was immediately intrigued. Warren Ellis is one of the best writers working in comics today, and when it comes to adding a dark edge to the world of capes, Ellis has already proven he can do that (from his work on RUINS, PLANETARY, the AUTHORITY, BLACK SUMMER, and NO HERO).

Imagine stories like WATCHMEN, IRREDEEMABLE, and even the humorous BOYS, taken to their darkest extreme. Imagine these stories infused with a real-world science fiction edge, and charged with the darkest take on super-humans gone mad that you can think of. This is the world of SUPERGOD. In Ellis’s words, the Man in the Sky is not coming to save you.

This is the story of how superhumans who were created to save the world, destroyed the world, not wanting to take on the responsibilites thrust upon them by science. Take every superhero comic ever published, shove them in a nuclear powered blender, soak it in bad vodka, and set the whole damn thing on fire… and you’ll get the world of SUPERGOD.

This five issue limited series is a must read, and we can’t recommend it enough, folks.

IT’S A DOUBLE DOSE OF LANTERN RINGS THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE! ORANGE & INDIGO RINGS AVAILABLE! SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED, SO MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR’S!
PLUS, TONS OF BLACKEST NIGHT AWESOMENESS: BOOSTER GOLD #26 BRINGS THE BLUE BEETLE (TED KORD) BACK FROM THE DEAD! REBELS #10BLACKEST NIGHT IN SPACE! AND, GREEN LANTERN CORPS #42ROCKS OA TO IT’S CORE!

It’s a big week for Blackest Night as three big tie-in issues hit, two of which carry the next in the series of Lantern Rings that Third Eye is bringing you. All three look like rockin’ reads, but lets give you guys the skinny starting with Booster Gold #26.

Booster Gold #26 comes with the Orange Lantern Ring (aka Avarice), and this issue is one not to be missed. Anyone who’s a DC fan has a place in their heart for the goofy yet endearing friendship shared between Booster Gold and  Ted Kord/Blue Beetle. These guys were literally the Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn of comics. Two goofballs who kept each other in check. And, then during the events leading into Infinite Crisis, Blue Beetle (aka Ted Kord) had his brains blown out. And, ever since, Booster’s been a wreck. Now, nevermind the fact that Booster Gold has been a pretty solid title since it’s launch. It’s suffered a couple of slow spots, but recently, it’s been a great read, like when it first began, the real draw here though, is the return of Blue Beetle as a Black Lantern. This obscure character rates high in the Third Eye DC history book, and it’s going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.

R.E.B.E.L.S #10 comes with the Indigo Lantern Ring (aka Compassion), and this is one that I was a little bit skeptical of. To be honest, I hadn’t read much of the REBELS series, just a couple issues here and there. Well, when they recently did the super cool annual with Starro.. I had to read it. I LOVE STARRO! And, dude, the book is actually pretty damn good. One of those underrated, hidden gems that doesn’t get the props it deserves. Very cool DCU space adventure stuff with a modern twist. I’m not exactly sure what they’ve got in store for the REBELS tie-in, but, so far, nothing with the Blackest Night banner has let me down. Plus, it’s got Starro. Who doesn’t love Starro?

Green Lantern Corps #42 doesn’t come with a ring, but holy cow, have you guys been following what’s been going down with the Blackest Night in this one? From the return of Jade as a Black Lantern, to last issue’s action-packed Lantern Corps badassery. The book is just plain good, and, I’ll tell you.. the artist, Patrick Gleason, I think he’s going to be the next breakout guy at DC. His art is creepy as hell, and fits perfectly with the Blackest Night. Very organic storytelling all around, and I can’t wait to see where things go next in this.

And, if you missed your Yellow Ring, we still have a limited amount left. Just snag a copy of Doom Patrol #4 from last week, and it comes with a free yellow ring!

BATMAN & ROBIN #6 – THE RED HOOD REVEALED… AND THE DEBUT OF THE FLAMINGO? MORRISON’S AMAZING BATMAN AND ROBIN CONTINUES!

It’s no secret that Batman and Robin is one of DC’s best titles coming out. And, it’s no secret that BATMAN AND ROBIN is the best Batman run in years. Morrison has found his niche with this one, giving us a fresh, accessible approach to the world of Batman with Dick Grayson under the cowl and Damian in the role of Robin. Seriously, folks, we can’t recommend this series enough. The artwork and story mesh so well together, and the book has all the right moves to make it one of those character-defining runs that I mentioned earlier.

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed most about the new Batman series is how Morrison is building a whole new Gottham City by introducing compelling new characters, and more importantly, new villains that don’t suck. We all know that normally, all new characters do not stick that well. For whatever reason, it’s hard to really make them interesting. Morrison has completely flipepd that philosophy on it’s head by introducing many new rogues to Batman’s rogues gallery. And, each one has had the same level of creepy cool that you would expect from any of the classics.

One of the reason this succeeds so well is because a new Batman demands new villains. And, we just thank the comic gods, that Morrison’s the man writing this one, because he really is doing a damn good job of blazing new trails in the world of Batman.

I think one of the other reasons why I enjoy Batman and Robin so much is because it’s so unlike any other title out there. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s got this post-modern 21st century feel that almost feels like Morrison is taking comic storytelling to new places. It’s not like there’s anything that screams out at you as groundbreaking, but when you read the book… it flows in a way that a comic book should, but not in a way you’ve seen before.

Anyways, I’m done gushing over this series. The newest issue ships Wednesday, and concludes the Revenge of the Red Hood arc. We get to meet the Flamingo, and big reveals aplenty are guaranteed.

Want to catch up on Batman and Robin? You know Third Eye’s got your back, as we’ve got issues 1,2,3,4, and 5 all in stock. Feel free to scoop em up on your next visit!

BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE ONE-SHOT - “JOKER” & “100 BULLETS” writer BRIAN AZZARELO AND DC COMICS CRAFT A BRAND NEW PULP-CENTRIC UNIVERSE IN THIS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED ONE-SHOT!

The Pulps are where it all started, ladies and gentlemen. If it wasn’t for those meaty slabs of killer serial fiction, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I mean, the pulps are where the great serial action hero really came into true form. And, one of the most influential, and famous pulp characters was Doc Savage.

Now, DC is in the process of rebuilding a whole new world in the DC Universe. It’s a world set in the ’40s, and there’s no superhumans… except for the pulp heroes. The first book to set this up is the Doc Savage/Batman one-shot, and between the stellar creative team of Brian Azzarello (the main man behind last year’s hit JOKER graphic novel) and Phil Notos (who’s artwork is some of the most gorgeous stuff we’ve seen), and just the fact that pulp heroes are plain cool… we’re pumped.

Now, what’s got us really intrigued is to see how Azzarello puts his twist on things. The man is a master of that pulpy crime noir storytelling, and it seems like these characters are a perfect fit to his sensibilities. We can already tell from the preview pages that Notos has got it, so now it’s just a matter of seeing what dark edge Azzarello plans to bring to this one.

Either way, we feel this one’s gonna be a good pick for the week. Clickhere to check out a preview of BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL!

CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD #2 DELIVERS MORE OF GARTH ENNIS’S DEPRAVED NEW SERIES!

Garth Ennis has really proven that he can shock, gross-out, and awe us all at the same time. And, with CROSSED, nearing it’s end.. it’s time for something new to fill that void of depravity we know is coming, right? If you haven’t already picked up the first issue of CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD: THE LAST BATTLE, then we highly recommend snagging it next trip through to see what all the fuss is about.

Basically, Danny Wormwood is the Anti-Christ.. but instead of bringing about armaggedon, he thinks it’s better to leave humanity to it’s own devices. Oh, and did we mention he’s built a very successful cable TV empire, and his best friend is the modern day reincarnation of Jesus Christ?

Yeah, that’s Danny Wormwood.

Now, herein lies the problem… Danny’s dad, the Devil, isn’t in charge of Hell anymore… and, instead, Hell is under the reign of the insanely (and now deceased) depraved Pope Jacko. And, Jacko has plans to unleash the legions of hell on earth.

All we can say is that this series is only one issue in, and it’s already the most bizarre, over-the-top, and intense horror comic we’ve ever seen. And, of course, it carries that razor-sharp trademark Ennis wit and humor, which is always a bonus.

Check it out this Wednesday, and like I said, if you’ve yet to grab #1.. give it a go!

A DOUBLE DOSE OF DEADPOOL THIS WEDNESDAY: DEADPOOL #17 – DEADPOOL JOINS THE X-MEN! & AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #611 *DEADPOOL & SPIDEY, PRELUDE TO GAUNTLET!*

Two big Deadpool issues hit this Wednesday, with the first being an awesome one-shot story in the pages of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #611, written by in our opinion, the best Deadpool scribe, JOE KELLY. Joe Kelly penned the classic late ’90s Deadpool series which defined the character’s cult status. And, there’s also the fact that this is the direct prelude to a little something known as the GAUNTLET, which is going to be the biggest Spider-man story in AGES. We can guarantee that this issue of Spidey is going to be a must-read, cause not only is Joe Kelly great when writing Spidey, but he’s perfect when it comes to penning the Merc With A Mouth! And, dude, the Gauntlet is going to rock so hard!

And, then next up, we have one of the biggest issues to hit for the regular DEADPOOL ongoing series, with Deadpool #17, featuring the Deadpool’s first day as an X-Man. Yup, ol’ Wade Wilson is joining the X-Men. And, the cover alone has us sold.

So, for those of you who like your Deadpool, you’re in for a real treat this Wednesday!

THE ANCHOR #2 FOLLOWS UP AN AWESOME FIRST ISSUE, GIVING US KILLER HELLBOY MEETS GODZILLA MONSTER FIGHTING ACTION!

The first issue of the Anchor really impressed me. What looked like it may be riffing a little too much on Hellboy, actually turned out to be a fresh, and exciting new book. The Anchor is God’s Leg Breaker. A centuries old monstrous being that exists somewhere between heaven and hell. He’s the gatekeeper that keeps the hordes of hell from invading Earth, and he’s pretty serious about his job.

But, what makes the Anchor cool… is it reads like a giant monster kaiju-fighting action hero book with just hints of characters like Hellboy and the Goon. The book definitely has it’s own flavor, and feel, and the first issue was the perfect blend of action-packed, monster-bashing fun with enough meat on it’s bone to make it a compelling read.

In other words, we dig it. The first issue is already sold out at our distributor, but we do have a handful of copies left in stock, so if you want to check it out, grab one this Wednesday, so you can get caught up to issue #2. If you’re looking for some pulpy, bigger-than-life monster-fighting fun, then the Anchor definitely fits the bill.

LOCKE & KEY CROWN OF SHADOWS #1 KICKS OFF THE THIRD ACT IN JOE HILL’S (SON OF STEPHEN KING) CREEPY AND AMAZING GHOST STORY EPIC!

If you’re not reading LOCKE & KEY yet, then you have got to jump on this series. Dude, it’s one of the things I’ve looked forward to most for the last couple of years. The fact that it’s written by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill, may be a draw, but, it’s just plain good comic book storytelling. Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez have managed to craft one of the most compelling, and interesting comic stories in recent memory. And, I’m going to go on record as saying that this is one of the best horror comics I’ve seen in years. AND IT’S A GHOST STORY! How often do you see a good ghost story? A genuinely terrifying ghost story? Seriously though, folks, this one has real WALKING DEAD potential in terms of paving new ground in comics, and building a compelling story.

With 60 issues planned, Joe Hill is just getting warmed up, and we’re so stoked to see where things are going next in the new CROWN OF SHADOWS limited series, which is the third “season” of LOCKE & KEY, I guess you could say.

What is Locke & Key? Locke & Key is a Lovecraftian ghost story that features a family trying to rebuild their lives after the grisly murder of their father. Of course, returning to their home, where the evil spirit who started everything dwells isn’t exactly the best of ideas. There’s two volumes out so far in graphic novel, collecting the series, and we have to tell you guys, it’s just too  good not to read. The character development, the atmosphere, all around… Locke & Key is top notch stuff.

DARK X-MEN #1 KICKS OFF THIS WEDNESDAY – THE PERFECT COMPANION TO NORMAN OSBORN’S DARK AVENGERS!

In the wake of Utopia, Norman Osborn is not letting go of what remains of his Dark X-Men. Much like the Dark Avengers, the Dark X-Men are the public face of the X-Men to the world, and t hey are all under Osborn’s control. From the insidious Dark Beast to the deceptive Mystique, the whole team is probably running their own agenda as well.

What’s really interesting? Remember Nate Grey..aka X-Man.. well, he’s got a big role to play in this whole thing. Wonder where they dug him up from!

Either way, we really dug Utopia, and it should be exciting to see where things go with this new DARK X-MEN team.

STOKED FOR MODERN WARFARE 2? WELL, GUESS WHAT.. IT’S GETTING THE COMIC BOOK TREATMENT IN MODERN WARFARE 2 GHOST #1

Who else is stoked to snag a copy of Modern Warfare this week? Unfortunately, it’ll probably be a bit before I get a chance to dive into this game. The Third Eye leaves little time for getting hooked into video games like I used to, but still.. I am so excited to check this one out.

And, of course, I’m pumped to see the comic. It used to be that video game comics SUCKED. For the longest time, publishers could not get that right. Wildstorm proved last year with books like their World of Warcraft series, and GEARS OF WAR, that this is no longer the case. Video game comics can, and do work nowadays, and c’mon.. what lends itself better to comic books than Modern Warfare!?

THE GHOUL #1 FROM STEVE NILES (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) & BERNIE WRIGHTSON DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY! HORROR COMIC AWESOMENESS!

Here’s one I’m pretty excited about.. THE GHOUL! Most of you guys know that I’m big on my old school horror comics, and whenever a modern master like Niles teams up with a legend like Wrightson.. it’s been great stuff. They knocked us out big on City of Others, and then did it again with Dead She Said, it should be very cool to see how they pull things off with the Ghoul.

See, the Ghoul is a hulking, monolithic beast that just happens to be the world’s most renowned private investigator that specializes in the weird, the macabre, and the occult. And of course, our human detective, stumbles into this weird world, and only the Ghoul can help him.

Now, the plot doesn’t exactly sound like anything too out of this world, but, trust us, we know the unique spin that Niles puts on classic horror tales, and the addition of Wrightson’s gorgeous, horrific pencils.. make this one a must read for those of you who dig on horror comics. There’s also the fact that the whole premise has this great kind of old school horror feel to it that makes it a can’t miss.

GREAT WEEK FOR TRADE PAPERBACKS & GRAPHIC NOVELS, CHECK OUT THESE HIGHLIGHTS!

Luna Park from Vertigo is an original graphic novel that looks to bring all the suspense of a flick like David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises to the world of sequential art. This crime noir tale features a former Russian soldier named Alik Strelnikov who traded his existence as a brutal soldier for the promise of America only to become an enforcer for a ruthless Brooklyn mob. This one has us excited, and with it’s chilling story set in the shadows of Coney Island, it’s sure to be an interesting read, and trip through the seedier sides of The Big Apple.

Green Lantern: Agent Orange HC – Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how affordable DC’s hardcovers have been getting? $19.99 is a great deal for a hardcover these days, and it’s pretty welcome to see the lowering of prices on these. Anyways, back to the point… This is part of the prelude to Blackest Night, and, lets be honest, AGENT ORANGE ruled! A great lead up to what’s been the biggest story of the year. The story of the Orange Lantern revealed in this mini-epic.

Wolverine Weapon X: The Adamantium Men – Jason Aaron (SCALPED) brings Wolverine back to his roots in the first story arc of this new ongoing series. Self-contained, and not tied into a thousand other books, this new series is very reminiscent of how the Wolverine title was in the early days. It’s just Logan, and the bloody, over-the-top adventures he finds himself involved in. The series has a kind of Punisher MAX feel in the way that it doesn’t really interact too strongly with the continuity of the Marvel universe, but instead focues on what’s important: telling a good story. If you’re a fan of the old school Wolverine stuff where he’s cutting up ninjas left and right, doing black ops work in the Cold War, or just plain going tooth and claw with Sabretooth, check this series out.

Superman Red Son Deluxe HC – This gorgeous new edition of Mark Millar’s (OLD MAN LOGAN, WANTED, ULTIMATES, KICK-ASS) awesome Elseworlds SUPERMAN RED SON story gives one of the coolest Superman stories of the last twenty years the presentation it deserves. Imagine Superman’s shuttle landing in Communist Russia instead of America, and the Man of Steel being raised by the Soviet Union… Batman’s an anti-communist terrorist who’s parents died in a bread line… Lex Luthor’s the president of the U.S.. and the Green Lantern Corps functions as the US Air Force… yes. it’s awesome.
