THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 3/24/10

WHAT IF BATMAN WAS A SADISTIC, EVIL MENACE? Mark Millar (KICK-ASS, OLD MAN LOGAN) and Steve McNiven (OLD MAN LOGAN, CIVIL WAR) unleash NEMESIS #1 this Wednesday! SIMPLY PUT.. What if Batman was the Joker?
CIVIL WAR? Just the beginning
KICK-ASS? A Warm-Up
NEMESIS IS HERE!

Here it is, folks, the book I am most excited about this Spring. Bar none, I’m looking forward to this more than just about anything else. And, I know what a lot of you guys are saying: of course, you are, Steve, you love all the @$%!ed up violent books. But, hey, that’s not true… I love all the @$!%ed up violent books that are well-written! :)

Seriously though, this one’s a big deal. First off, it’s the creative team of MARK MILLAR and STEVE MCNIVEN. This is the writer/artist combo that brought you CIVIL WAR, and OLD MAN LOGAN. And, for those of you who may not know, OLD MAN LOGAN was the Third Eye Must Buy of 2009, folks. Probably the best Wolverine series in two decades, showing us a Logan who has sheathed his claws permanently, and started a family amidst a post-apocalyptic wasteland of dead Marvel heroes, and supervillains that run the country.  But, hey, hold up, that’s not all…..  Mr. Millar also gave us the INCREDIBLE KICK-ASS, which is on it’s way to movie theaters this April. And, with KICK-ASS and OLD MAN LOGAN, he showed us how he was capable of taking the superhero genre and completely spinning it on it’s head.

So, WHAT IS NEMESIS? Nemesis is comic book love, my friends. Mark Millar is doing what he does best all over again, and getting ready to put us all through the ringer. Nemesis, in a nutshell, is What if Batman WAS the Joker? In other words, if you had the world’s smartest, wealthiest man, and instead of him being dedicated to protecting the innocent, he had committed his existence to terrorizing the innocent. In fact, what he does is he targets a police chief, moves into his jurisdiction, recruits a team from the local hoods, and then goes on a crusade against the entire city. And, it’s all executed with the kind of strategy, and bravado that you would expect from an adventure of the Dark Knight.

Now, I’ve only read the first issue, as an advance copy, but, from what I have read… this book is going to blow you away. It looks like the actual motivations, and origins of Nemesis will be explored further in the series, but that first issue… it’s a non-stop bloodbath from beginning to finish. And, it’s all done in McNiven’s gorgeous, incredible art-style, with of course, the fantastic pacing and storytelling of Mark Millar.

But, back to NEMESIS! So, the first issue starts with NEMESIS, doing some horrible things in another part of the world, before he decides to set his sights on a police chief in Washington, D.C. And, while I’m trying to not give away too much in the way of spoilers, it looks like we’re going to see the series being summed up as NEMESIS targeting this ordinary man, and this ordinary man fighting back as best he can. And, see, that’s where it looks like the appeal of the series is really going to shine. In the world of NEMESIS, there are no superheroes, no superpowers, there’s only one person who qualifies as a superhuman, and that’s NEMESIS. And, he’s superhuman in the way that Batman is Superhuman, extraordinary athletic abilities, genius IQ, lots of cool gadgets. Now, what do you do to fight back against the supervillain equivalent of Batman, who carries the philosophy of THE JOKER?

That’s where things are going to be interesting. The struggle between average man, and the unstoppable force of NEMESIS.

I’m really trying hard to not spoil anything from the first issue, but holy crap, if you guys thought KICK-ASS and OLD MAN LOGAN had some jawdropping events, wait til you read this. Heck, even the level of blood, and guts, illustrated by the very talented Steve McNiven, is at an all-time high.

So, if you’re looking for one of the biggest books to hit this year, then look no further, NEMESIS is going to be a mega-hit. And, I can tell this from reading just the first issue, ’cause folks, IT’S ONE HELL OF A GOOD READ!

BLACKEST NIGHT NEARS IT’S END AS GREEN LANTERN #52 DELIVERS SEVERAL REVELATIONS THAT PAVE THE WAY TO THE FINAL ISSUE, BLACKEST NIGHT #8! YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS ISSUE OF GREEN LANTERN, TRUST US!

Since that last page of BLACKEST NIGHT #7, we’ve all been eagerly awaiting to see the next step for Sinestro now that he’s wielding the White Ring. And, this week in GREEN LANTERN #52, many of our questions are going to be answered. While DC has been cagey on the details surrounding this issue of GREEN LANTERN, we do know that this is the penultimate chapter of BLACKEST NIGHT, with only one more issue (BLACKEST NIGHT #8) left after this. We also know that their solicits have stressed that we do not want to miss this issue, no matter what. And, I have to admit, so far, DC has delivered on their promises with BLACKEST NIGHT. Every issue that’s been stressed as being an important, or pivotal part, has been exactly that. This was proven big time to me last week in the pages of GREEN LANTERN CORPS #46, which delivered huge. The issue was promoted as an all-out battle royale, and it sure as hell was. PLUS, BLACK LANTERN ANTI-MONITOR=TOO COOL.

Anyways, back to GREEN LANTERN #52, with only one issue of BLACKEST NIGHT left after this, we’re expecting some huge payoffs in this issue, since we know they cannot wrap EVERYTHING up in just one final issue of BLACKEST NIGHT. Plus, the fact that Geoff Johns has been writing the GREEN LANTERN books themselves, and has made each issue of the series fit very nicely in-between issues of BLACKEST NIGHT (going so far as to dub the GL tie-ins as Blackest Night 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, ect, ect), we’re sure this one’s going to be one hell of a read.

So, folks, gear up, and get ready as we march closer towards the BRIGHTEST DAY, and near the conclusion of BLACKEST NIGHT this Wednesday with GREEN LANTERN #52.

SIEGE DOMINATES THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY! A BIG HEAPING DOSE OF SIEGE AWESOMENESS ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH AVENGERS INITIATIVE #34MIGHTY AVENGERS #35NEW AVENGERS #63THOR #608, and THUNDERBOLTS #142!

Siege makes a huge splash this Wednesday with a full assortment of killer SIEGE tie-ins. Now, I have to say that I’ve been super impressed so far with the quality and relevance of most of the SIEGE tie-ins. Marvel has done a great job of making each one of the tie-in books feel crucial, and integral to the storyline as a whole, and has done a great job of avoiding the trap of falling into filler with them.

After last week’s epic happenings in SIEGE #3, we couldn’t be more stoked to see what’s coming next this Wednesday with the plethora of killer tie-in issues from Marvel. So, lets go through, and give you the rundown on what to expect…

THOR #608 – THOR vs. THOR CLONE (remember him from CIVIL WAR) in this huge tie-in issue that takes place after the destruction of Asgard!

Those last two pages of THOR #607 were stunning, to say the least. The THOR Siege tie-in, along with the DARK AVENGERS ones, probably have been my favorite tie-ins to the event so far. The writing on both have been top notch, and you know it doesn’t hurt that THOR has been just getting better, and better with every issue. Kieron Gillen is definitely an up-and-coming writer to watch, for sure, and he has been really showing how good he can be with his current run on THOR. Not to mention Billy Tan has been delivering some of the best work of his career so far, in our opinion.
This week in THOR #608, we get to see something that everybody has been waiting for… the showdown between THOR and the THOR clone from CIVIL WAR. Ever since the reveal of it’s existence, we’ve been waiting to see how this would play out, and now with the Thor clone (aka Ragnarok) showing up in the thick of SIEGE, it looks like we’re going to find out this Wednesday. Not to mention, this issue takes plcae directly after the events of SIEGE #3, and without giving away too much in the way of spoilers… you can be sure there’s a huge mess in Asgard that Thor and his Asgardian kin are going to have to take care of!

AVENGERS INITIATIVE #34 – CAPTAIN AMERICA vs. THE TASKMASTER! THE SURPRISE HIT OF OF SIEGE TIE-INS CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY!

One of the biggest surprise breakout hits of SIEGE as far as tie-ins go has been AVENGERS: INITIATIVE. This was a book that really had kinda hit a downward spiral after the start of Dark Reign. It just kind of was there, and didn’t really bring anything to the table that made it a must-read. However, when they did that first SIEGE tie-in with AVENGERS INITIATIVE #31, the art and writing on the book really stood out and made us take notice. Basically, we’ve seen Taskmaster take center-stage, as kind of the voice for your average run-of-the-mill super-villains. The characterization of Taskmaster, Constrictor, and others has really made this an interesting read as we’ve watched Taskmaster go from a low-level C-list character off on the sidelines, to being the same character but thrown directly into the middle of a War with the Gods. In this issue, we see that Taskmaster may finally realize how far in over his head he really is as it comes down to him and Captain America going head to head.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #35 – ULTRON HAS RETURNED…

ULTRON. One of the most classic Avengers villains of all-time, and still, to this day, one of the most terrifying. And, as the MIGHTY AVENGERS are thrown into the mix of SIEGE madness, so is one of their greatest foes, ULTRON. The Mighty Avengers are left without a leader, as Hank Pym is trapped in Pym-Space, with his robotic “son”, ULTRON. And apparently, there’s supposed to be one of the largest Avengers surprises to be seen in quite a while.

NEW AVENGERS #63 – IN THE MIDST OF THE DESTRUCTION OF ASGARD, THE NEW AVENGERS ARE PUT INTO A DEADLY POSITION! IS THIS A SNEAK PEEK AT THE NEW AVENGERS LINE-UP?

Another top notch series of tie-ins for SIEGE has been the NEW AVENGERS books, which began with NEW AVENGERS #61. With all the talk of new teams being formed, and new directions for the books, it’s been very interesting to watch the NEW AVENGERS and their place in regards to SIEGE. You can almost feel the walls crumbling around them, and even, their more worldly foes, like the Hood. This issue, taking place during the events of SIEGE #3, shows us how the NEW AVENGERS are dealing with being thrown into the middle of Asgard’s destruction, and it shows all the moments of that massive battle that were only touched upon in SIEGE #3.
Click here for a preview of NEW AVENGERS #63

THUNDERBOLTS #142 - THE THUNDERBOLTS HEAD TO HEAD WITH THE MIGHTY AVENGERS AS ASGARD FALLS FROM THE SKY!

Another solid SIEGE tie-in was what happened in the pages of THUNDERBOLTS #141, as we saw Ghost invading the walls of Asgard, under orders by Norman Osborn. With the THUNDERBOLTS acting as Marvel’s very own suicide squad of supervillains and shady characters that handle the missions almost guaranteed to fail, how will they fare in a battlefield filled with Asgardians, and Avengers alike? And, what will we learn of their motivations?

HAUNT volume 1 trade paperback arrives this Wednesday right alongside HAUNT #6. ARE YOU READING HAUNT? Find out why ROBERT KIRKMAN’S (INVINCIBLE, WALKING DEAD) and TODD MCFARLANE’S (legednary Spawn creator) new IMAGE series has become one of our favorite monthly reads! GET THE FIRST TRADE FOR ONLY $9.99, and HOP ON WITH THIS WEEK’S ISSUE #6 TO ENJOY THE MONTHLY SERIES!

One of the best damn series to start in 2009 has been HAUNT, from the extremely talented writer ROBERT KIRKMAN (the man behind WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, and much more) and TODD MCFARLANE, the legendary comic creator behind SPAWN, and an original IMAGE co-founder. The secret ingredient in HAUNT’S recipe for awesomeness is the mixing of Kirkman’s skillful writing and storytelling with McFarlane’s visceral sense of BIG. In other words, this book has everything that made you love comics when you were a teenager, combined with the sharp writing and dialogue that makes you love comics today. Plus, it’s got that nice little dose of ultraviolence that doesn’t hurt to make a book a fun read. :)

This Wednesday, it’s a HAUNT double dose, with the first trade paperback collecting HAUNT 1-5, and it’s only $9.99. Alongside the first trade comes the sixth issue of HAUNT, which gives you the perfect opportunity to jump onto this great series if you haven’t already. For those of you who have been digging the killer range of IMAGE titles like CHEW, INVINCIBLE, and WALKING DEAD, this one’s a must-read.

What’s the scoop on HAUNT? HAUNT follows Catholic priest Daniel Kilgore, and the ghost of his brother who’ve bonded together to form the superhero HAUNT. The twist is these two brothers do not get a long with one another at all, with Daniel being a priest who’s faith is lacking, and his chain-smoking, hooker picking up lifestyle not being the most chaste path. Kurt, a black ops commando, ends up getting killed on a mission, and something going awry with his death. His ghost comes back just in time to possess his brother, and protect him from being killed, and then from there the book kicks off into a high-energy, non-stop thrillride of espionage, conspiracies, and some very brutal killings. The combination of Kirkman’s writing, which keeps things fresh, and interesting with the artwork of McFarlane and Ryan Ottley (INVINCIBLE) fleshing out the story nicely.

A truly visceral, entertaining comic experience, we cannot recommend HAUNT enough if you’re looking to get into a gritty, dirty, yet violently fun new series. Ontop of all that, there’s those moments where you just stop and go “Wow, THAT’S cool”, like when HAUNT uses their ectoplasm-based powers to do neat things (whether it’s chopping guys heads off, or shooting out like webbing to slow the descent of a car that’s been driven off the side of a building).

What’s coming up in HAUNT #6? Well, the first story arc of HAUNT is a nice set-up, but we all know that Kirkman’s strength is what comes after he’s laid his groundworks. That’s when you start seeing the real surprise twists, as he’s had time to develop his characters some more. In issues #4, and #5, you learn there’s a lot more going on between Kurt and Daniel Kilgore than you realize, and that adds to the intrigue of the series. Issue #6 focuses on Kurt’s former lover, and fellow spy, Mirage,  where we see more of her origins revealed, and her perspective on the events of HAUNT thus far.

Want to get caught up on HAUNT? Pick up the first trade this Wednesday for only $9.99, or for those of you who’re into getting the single issues, we still currently have all five of the previous issues in stock to get caught up on. Either way, give the series a try, it’s FANTASTIC! And, hey, while you’re at it, you can jump aboard the ongoing and look forward to HAUNT every month with this week’s issue #6!

SUPERGOD #3 ARRIVES AFTER MUCH ANTICIPATION TO CONTINUE WARREN ELLIS’S (TRANSMETROPOLITAN, PLANETARY, CAPTAIN SWING) EPIC TAKE ON SUPERHUMANS!

It’s been a longtime coming, but finally we’re seeing the release of the third issue of SUPERGOD. Okay, so it hasn’t been THAT long, but that’s just how good this series has been, that we’re on the edge of our seat waiting for the next installment. The second issue really opened things up as we saw more depth given to the American SUPERGOD, and his place in the grand scheme of things.
Now, for those of you not yet reading SUPERGOD, here’s the scoop on the series.

What’s SUPERGOD all about? Ellis’s SUPERGOD is the third part in a themed-trilogy of stories that Ellis is doing on the idea of superhumans. Now, by no means do you HAVE to read it’s predecessors, BLACK SUMMER, and NO HERO (although they’re both damn good, and we recommend it), but it’s just an overall theme that Ellis has been exploring in these stories. SUPERGOD is all about what would REALLY happen if the militaries and governments of the world explored building superhumans. What we’re shown through the series is how each country’s “supergod” is defined by the major religious beliefs of that nation. So, when India builds their Supergod, it looks like Krishna. And, the first issue begins with Krishna arriving to save the country.. by destroying it. And, that pretty much sets the stage for SUPERGOD. There’s a lot of focus placed on Jerry Carney, a deceased U.S Air Force pilot who has been resurrected, and had his body retrofitted with artificial technology to make him into the U.S’s SUPERGOD. Upon realizing he’s dead, and should not be alive, but in heaven, the U.S puts him in a government facility that looks like Suburbia, and keeps him in this personal heaven until they need his skills.

This third issue looks to be following up on a massive battle between Jerry, and Russia’s Supergod (crammed into the body of a gigantic robot) Novaya Goraj. The collateral damage is huge, and these aren’t even the most powerful of the Supergods.

So, essentially, Supergod is what a Superhuman Arms Race would actually be. Take every superhero comic ever published, shove them into a nuclear-powered blender, soak it in bad vodka, and set the whole thing ablaze, and that’s Supergod. Pure ELLIS insanity that’ll have you on the edge of your seat all throughout.

UNCANNY X-MEN #522 - THE RETURN OF KITTY PRYDE IS HERE! ‘NUFF SAID!

One of the Marvel Universe’s most beloved characters will be returning this Wednesday in the pages of UNCANNY X-MEN #522, and we’re stoked as hell for it. Kitty Pryde, who hasn’t been seen since the conclusion of Joss Whedon’s incredible run on ASTONISHING X-MEN, looks to be alive, and (hopefully) well, as Magneto is working his mojo to bring her back to Earth. And, how could he do that? Well, last we saw, Kitty was trapped inside of a giant metal bullet that got shot into a planet. And, since a return this big deserves to be done up properly, Marvel’s knocking it out of the park this Wednesday with a special over-sized issue featuring the incredible artwork of PHIL JIMINEZ and WHILCE PORTACIO.

Now, with SECOND COMING right around the corner, we can only wonder what Kitty’s return will mean in the grand scheme of things? What is Magneto’s real motivation for bringing her back? And, how will her fellow team-mates, especially Colossus deal with her return?

X-Fans, this is one you are not gonna wanna miss!

ATTN: WHEDON FANS, DR. HORRIBLE’S FELICIA DAY WRITES THE GUILD #1 AND IT ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF MMO GAMES!

Here’s a big one for all you Whedon fans out there, especially those of you who are big fans of DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG. Felicia Day (of DR. HORRIBLE fame) has brought her killer web series to the world of comics, in this new series which fills in and explores details never before revealed on the web show.

The Guild is a series that chronicles the humorous on and offline lives of a group of internet role-playing gamers, the Knights of Good. If you’ve ever been hooked on games like World of Warcraft or Everquest, then this series is guaranteed to hit your funnybone hard. Plus, it’s being written by series creator, Felicia Day, and we hear she’s a super nice lady. :)

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL #1CONTINUES THE RISE AND FALL OF THE GREEN ARROW STORYLINE THIS WEDNESDAY!

The RISE AND FALL of the Green Arrow storyline has been keeping us hooked so far, with a return to awesomeness for Oliver Queen, but now we’re stoked to see the ramifications of Cry for Justice explored in this new 4 issue limited series featuring Arsenal, aka Red Arrow. Roy Harper got it pretty bad in Cry for Justice, barely surviving the brutal dismemberment that cost him his arms at the hands of PROMETHEUS. And, now, awakened from his coma, Arsenal is finding that his journey into despair is just beginning as his old mentor, the Green Arrow, has taken a dark turn, and the Justice League is out on the hunt for him.

NORTHLANDERS v.3 BLOOD IN THE SNOWtrade paperback arrives this Wednesday! Another slab of Viking awesomeness from the crazy talented BRIAN WOOD (DEMO, DMZ)

One of the best damn Vertigo series hitting the stands right now is Brian Wood’s NORTHLANDERS. If you couldn’t already tell from the heaps of praise we pour onto series like DEMO, and DMZ, we’re all big Brian Wood fans here at Third Eye.

This Wednesday, the third slab of his Viking saga continues, and we couldn’t be more stoked to get our hands on another trade of Northlanders. If you haven’t read Northlanders before, allow us to give you the scoop on why this series is the bees knees.

Northlanders is a series of fictional stories set in and around the historical events of the Viking Age. The series itself is divided up into long story arcs that alternate with shorter arcs. In the first story arc, Sven the Returned, we get to watch as Sven, a self-exiled Viking warrior serving in the Varangian Guard, returns to his birth region of the Orkney Islands to reclaim his inheritance. Of course, his evil uncle stands in his ways, and what happens from there is one of the most bloody, beautiful “lone wolf” pitted against immense odds stories we’ve ever seen.

From there, we see stories that focus on everything from the sacking of the Lindisfarne monastery at the beginning of the Viking Age to an Irishman fending off occupying Viking forces in Dublin using guerrilla tactics.

The thing that makes the series great is the fusion of very talented artists and Brian Wood’s well-paced, well-crafted storytelling. Another added bonus is the dialogue, a lot of stories set in the distant past get stunted on dialogue that is difficult for us as readers to have pull us into the story. In Northlanders, the characters talk like real people, and it really helps pull you further into the story.

The third trade, due out this Wednesday, features several different stories set in the Northlanders world, including our personal favorites the Viking Art of Single Combat, and Sven the Immortal.

ORC STAIN #2 CONTINUES JAMES STOKOE’S SURREAL, QUIRKY, AND INCREDIBLE-LOOKING ORC WORLD MADNESS!

Here’s a big cult favorite here at Third Eye, and dude, we could not be more stoked to see the second issue arriving this Wednesday. This series has some of the BEST artwork going on right now, in my opinion. Hyper-detailed, freshly colored awesomeness from James Stokoe (the author of Wonton Soup) that makes us think of Geoff Darrow and Paul Pope.

The actual series itself is a fantasy book that takes place on a planet populated almost entirely by hordes of orcs. After countless generations of in-fighting, the Orc Chief is looking to unite the armies and build his long-lasting empire. But, to do this, he has to enlist an orc treasure hunter by the name of One-Eye.

And, that sums up the plot, it’s not complicated. But, it is FUN as hell. It’s like some bizarre cross between those animated Ralph Bakshi sword and sorcery flicks of the ’70s, H.R Giger’s ALIENS, and the zaniness of modern day awesomeness like Scott Pilgrim.

The real stand out though however is the artwork, which is honestly some of the best looking stuff I’ve seen. The colors, and the attention to detail in this series is gorgeous, and that alone makes the book worth the price of admission.

If you guys want something that’s pure fun, and haven’t already tried Orc Stain, snag up the first issue (still in stock here at Third Eye), and grab a copy of #2 this Wednesday here at Third Eye!

ROBERT JORDAN’S WHEEL OF TIME GETS THE COMIC TREATMENT THIS WEDNESDAY WITHWHEEL OF TIME: THE EYE OF THE WORLD #1!

Originally, the Dabel Brothers were going to release Robert Jordan’s killer Wheel of Time saga in comic book form, but unfortunately, could not get the book out on time. So, thankfully, Dynamite has acquired the rights to publish Wheel of Time, and we’ll get to see this killer look at the world of Jordan’s fantasy explored on a consistent, on time basis.

This first issue collects both issue #0, and issue #1 of the series, in one big 64 page issue (and heck, it’s only $3.99 too!), written by Robert Jordan and Chuck Dixon, with the stellar artwork of Chase Conley, this one’s a must read for all you die-hard Wheel of Time and Robert Jordan fans out there. A true fantasy epic getting the comic treatment it deserves.

SHUDDERTOWN #1 DELIVERS DELIVERS A GRITTY CRIME NOIR HORROR STORY THAT FEELS LIKE “THE WIRE” MEETS “SE7EN”

Folks, this one looks super freakin’ cool. A brand new Image limited series that feels like a mix of THE WIRE and SE7EN, and sports some of the sweetest looking artwork we’ve seen in a while. Apparently, people who’re supposed to be dead have been committing brutal murders, and troubled homicide cop Isaac Hernandez is on a search for answers. He finds himself being drawn into the corridors of the Shuddertown housing projects, and the truth is something he may not want to face.

I’ve seen some preview pages of this one, and it looks really killer. The artwork is A+, and the story and dialogue has a nice grit to it that looks like this’ll be a fun little crime/horror story.

Great artwork, and what sounds like a very promising story, this is definitely one worth giving a look.

PHONOGRAM v.2 SINGLES CLUB TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! STRAIGHT UP CERTIFIED COOL, 100%, IMAGINE WARREN ELLIS’S PLANETARY… BUT USING THE POP CULTURAL WORLD OF MUSIC!

One of the biggest sleeper hits I think I’ve seen was Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s killer Phonogram series. The first miniseries, Rue Britannia, explores the world of a magician who uses the medium of Britpop music to interpret his magic. The series kind of makes you think of something like PLANETARY, but instead of the worlds of serial and pulp fiction being explored, it’s the world of music. Dave Kohl, the mage in question, learns that someone is planning to resurrect Britannia, the goddess of Britpop, in zombified form. The series is a true tribute to the power of popular music, and weaves references and phrases into the story so seamlessly that you feel like you’re there. The surrealness of seeing Blur turn up, and the way that it weaves with the comic bookness of the series is incredible.

And, now, this Wednesday, the second mini-series, Singles Club, is hitting trade paperback, and we know you guys are stoked to give it a go.  See, in the world of Phonogram, music is pure magic, and the practicioners of this dark yet fun art are known as Phonomancers, living amongst us, and we’d never know. While Rue Britannia focused on Dave Kohl, this new miniseries focuses on a new cast of phonomancers, who are younger, and more impressionable, and don’t quite grasp how wonderful and dangerous the urban fatnasy world is in which they dwell.

The series is weird and wonderful, and it’s some of the best written stuff we’ve seen recently. Give it a shot, and try the trades, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

YOU WANTED NIGHTCRAWLER? YOU’RE GONNA GET NIGHTCRAWLER! Everyone’s favorite X-Men finally gets a killer Origins one-shot this Wednesday in X-MEN ORIGINS: NIGHTCRAWLER!

A fan-favorite, for sure, Nightcrawler is one of those X-Men characters that’s got such a cool visual, combined with a killer backstory, and neat powers, that he’s really amassed a loyal fan-following. And, one of the questions I get asked frequently is “Steve, what’s a good Nightcrawler story?” I normally point people to stuff like God Loves, Man Kills, which is a great story, and has a nice focus on our favorite teleporting mutant, as well as strikes a chord with who and what he’s all about. But, there has never really been a good definitive one-off Nightcrawler story, until now.

Yup, this Wednesday, the elf gets his own one-shot exploring his origins, his past, and his future in the Marvel Universe. And, keeping in tune with the past X-Men Origins one-shots, the artwork in this book is freakin’ gorgeous, courtesy of Cary Nord.

Matt – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #625 = The first Rhino story that Joe Kelly did in #617 was over-the-top awesome, but this follow-up was even better. If you’re not following THE GAUNTLET, you need to check this out. The bet Spidey has been in ages.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2* – THE LEAD UP TO BRUCE WAYNE’S RETURN CONTINUES, AND THE MYSTERIES BEHIND BLACK HAND’S CONNECTION TO BATMAN CONTINUE!

A couple of weeks ago, the biggest Batman story arc in Grant Morrison’s critically acclaimed BATMAN AND ROBIN series began. A story arc that not only intends to answer some very crucial questions about Bruce Wayne, and his relation to BLACKEST NIGHT, but also, serves as a lead-in to this spring’s highly anticipated BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. And, it began with a bang!

Since the beginning of Blackest Night, we’ve all been wondering what the deal was with Black Hand, and the supposed skull of Bruce Wayne. In Blackest Night 5, we were completely mind-boggled by what appeared to be the resurrection of Batman as a Black Lantern. Of course, there were some little clues and hints that it may not be the real thing. In other words, there’s some very well done collaboration going on between Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and DC’s editorial department in making sure that everything links up how it should.

And, this leads us to Grant Morrison’s BLACKEST KNIGHT storyline which began in BATMAN AND ROBIN #7, and will be running through BATMAN AND ROBIN 8 and 9. We started out in BATMAN AND ROBIN #7, with the reintroduction of two of my personal favorite characters: Knight and Squire. Essentially, England’s answer to Batman and Robin. They’re assisting Dick Grayson in locating one of the last remaining Lazarus Pits. We get a very cool, and interesting trip into the underworld of England, and even a neat look at the Rogues Gallery of Knight and Squire. It’s kind of cool to see the paralells that run between here and Gotham City. Of course, we know why they’re looking for the Lazarus Pits, but you and I both know things aren’t going to work out quite how they should. The end of BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 showed us something very cool, involving the gloved hand of a certain Dark Knight. But we’re thinking that all is not as it seems.

This week, the storyline continues in BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2*, as we see Dick Grayson, Knight, Squire, and Batwoman explore the mysteries of the Lazarus Pit,  and the terror they may have unleashed on the world. The ties between Bruce Wayne and Blackest Night baddie, Black Hand may be revealed a little more. Meanhwhile, back in Gotham City, Alfred and Damian (Robin), who’s recuperating, are at the mercy of some serious bad mojo.

Folks, I can’t stress enough how great of a book BATMAN AND ROBIN has been, and it just gets better. If you’re not reading Batman and Robin, and you’re a Batman fan at all, then you are missing out on what is possibly the best Batman monthly series in many years. Morrison has demonstrated his passion for the characters by not paying homage to great stories of the past, but also, adding a fresh, new dynamic to the characters, and their world. I mean, in just 8 issues, Morrison’s introduced several villains and supporting characters that’re already much more interesting than some characters that get full 6 issue arcs fleshing out their back stories. And that’s after just a few panels of appearances!

If you’re looking to hop onboard with the current arc, BLACKEST KNIGHT, you can do so by grabbing BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 1*, this serves as a fantastic jumping on point, and is a great area for new readers to come aboard. If you’re really intrigued by the series, and want to get the entire run so far, we currently have issues 1-7 all well-stocked here at Third Eye.

Either way, be sure to check out BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 *IN BLACKEST KNIGHT PT 2*

HAUNT #5 – THE FIRST STORY ARC IN THE HIT ONGOING SERIES FROM ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) AND TODD MCFARLANE CONCLUDES THIS WEDNESDAY!

One of the best books to come out of 2009 was the new Image ongoing series HAUNT. Written by one of our favorite writers here, Robert Kirkman (the man behind WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE), and illustrated by comics legend TODD MCFARLANE, and rising star INVINCIBLE artist RYAN OTTLEY, HAUNT is a true all-star title. Each issue is better than the last, in our opinion, and we feel that Kirkman is really hitting his stride now with issue #5 due out this week. The beauty of HAUNT is it celebrates the fun you can have with comics. It brings you back to when you were 13, and you found yourself saying “THAT’S SICK!!”, but at the same time, it’s got a very well-written story that keeps you interested, and doesn’t come off as one-dimensional. It’s this combination of a visceral fun read, with a well-paced, and well-crafted storyline that makes HAUNT so damn good. Oh, and the art is crucial. :)

What’s Haunt all about? HAUNT is the story of two brothers. Kurt and Daniel Kilgore. Daniel, a catholic priest, is estranged from his brother Kurt, a government agent. When Kurt gets murdered, due to his mission, and his refusal to follow the agenda of it completely, soemthing goes wrong. He’s still on this plane, as a ghost, and as his brother Daniel, is about to be murdered in connection to Kurt, Kurt posesses him, and the two bond.. forming HAUNT. The two begin a bloody path to find out the mysteries behind Kurt’s murder, and also how to protect themselves and any of their loved ones from being hurt in the crossfire. And, this is just the first story arc.

Why we love it? On the surface, the plot sounds like it could be a little one dimensional, but that’s the beauty of HAUNT. Kirkman takes an ages old concept (two brothers who hate each other, one dies, the other takes vengeance), and adds depth, and a compelling storyline to it, which makes everything seem fresh. The art and story mesh together perfectly, and each issue is a literal breakneck joyride from cover to cover. The book is violent as hell, which adds to the hyper-kinetic visceral appeal the series has. And, the plot, and characterization are just plain great. The story behind Kurt and Daniel continues to flesh out with each issue, making for a more compelling relationship between the two brothers. The supporting cast, as well as the “bad guys” of the series also gain more depth as things go on. Another reason why we love it? Every issue is packed with those moments that evoke that teenage excitement of a stack of comics, and Slayer albums, where you just go “dude.. that’s awesome.” The way that Kirkman is exploring the character’s powers is pretty damn cool, and there’s many moments when it comes down to that.

Want to Catch Up? We currently have HAUNT issues #1-4 all well-stocked here at Third Eye, so if you’re interested in hopping on, we got you covered.

ADVENTURE COMICS #7 *WHAT WOULD BLACK LANTERN SUPERBOY DO?* FEATURING BLACK LANTERN SUPERBOY - A VERY SPECIAL BLACKEST NIGHT ISSUE EXPLORES BLACKEST NIGHT’S EFFECTS ON CONNOR KENT!

Blackest Night continues to deliver some of the best stuff on the stands. The conclusion to last week’s BLACKEST NIGHT WONDER WOMAN was awesome, and that QUESTION one-shot rocked pretty hard too. And, now this week, we get to see a very cool one-shot issue of ADVENTURE COMICS featuring Connor Kent, Black Lantern. You might remember at the end of BLACKEST NIGHT 5, and then throughout BLACKEST NIGHT 6, many of the DCU’s characters who had previously returned from the grave (like Green Arrow, Superman, Wonder Woman, and yes, Superboy) were reclaimed by Nekron, and converted into BLACK LANTERNS.

Picking up on that plot thread, this week, in ADVENTURE COMICS #7, we get to see the very dark side of Superboy, as all the nasty stuff hiding beneath his subconcious comes to surface. And, according to the DCU Source blog, we learn a pretty nasty secret about Connor Kent that’s going to blow a lot of fans away. In addition, something big that’s supposed to significantly impact the character and his place in the DCU is supposed to happen in this issue as well.

All we know is that Adventure Comics has been one of our favorite new DCU titles since issue #1. Geoff Johns launched this series perfectly, and it’s continued to carry steam all the way through. We did think it may have jumped the shark a little with Superboy Prime, but now that they’ve gotten back to focusing on Connor Kent, it’s picking back up a lot of steam. PLUS, it’s Blackest Night this week, and it’s one of the coolest Blackest Night angles we’ve seen: what does the corrupting influence of Nekron do when it taints heroes who already escaped death once?

SECRET SIX #18 *BLACKEST NIGHT*CONCLUDES THE SECRET SIX / SUICIDE SQUAD BLACKEST NIGHT SAGA! FIND OUT WHY SECRET SIX IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE DC BOOKS!

Secret Six has really turned into one of my favorite DC titles over the last year and a half. Gail Simone proves that she’s one of the best “team book” writers in the biz, and especially excels at working with characters that have been out of the spotlight for a bit. Her characterization of the members of Secret Six is dead on, and has fleshed out this team as a very cool, very solid line-up. The concept of taking a line-up of assorted DC supervillains, and neutral characters, and using them as a last resort kind of team.

The current story arc that’s been going down is a crossover with the predecessors of Secret Six, the Suicide Squad. Gail Simone has teamed up with the original Suicide Squad writer, John Ostrander, to tell this tale, and set against the backdrop of BLACKEST NIGHT, it’s been great.

Suicide Squad #67 is where it begins with the original Suicide Squad, featuring characters like Bronze Tiger, Amanda Waller, and more, going head to head with the Secret Six… and the common theme? Deadshot. A prominent member of both teams, and both teams want him. Of course, there needs to be a reason for why this book carries the Blackest Night banner, and it’s in the shape of old school DC villain, The Fiddler. Yes. The Fiddler. Seriously. But, it works, we swear!

The story continues in SECRET SIX #17, and admittedly, feels much smoother than the rocky start of SUICIDE SQUAD #67. Gail Simone’s quirky characterization of the Secret Six really shines here, against the backdrop of the Black Lantern invasion. The brutality of the Black Lanterns is really taken up quite a few notches in both this and Suicide Squad 67, showing us some of the creepiest, most intense actions by the Black Lanterns yet. They’re savage as hell, and haven’t shown vicious streaks like this since Blackest Night #1. Caliafore’s art really brings the Lanterns to life.

This week, the storyline concludes in the pages of SECRET SIX #18 *BLACKEST NIGHT*, and all that needs to be said is Amanda Waller is unleashing a Manhunter on the Black Lanterns.

If you missed Suicide Squad 67, or Secret Six 17, don’t worry, we still have plenty of both in stock.

MESMO DELIVERY GRAPHIC NOVEL ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND DELIVERS ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING NEW STORIES I’VE SEEN! EX-BOXERS, ELVIS IMPERSONATORS,  AND SOME INCREDIBLE ART!

One thing that I take pride in here at Third Eye is we have a pretty good eye for new talent, and finding those real gems that could be often overlooked amongst the sensory overload of the monthly PREVIEWS catalog. The most recent of these killer finds, is the graphic novel MESMO DELIVERY by Rafael Grampa. This is something that I’ve been excited about since I first heard about it last year. The artwork is INCREDIBLE looking, and reminds me of a cross between Geoff Darrow and Paul Pope. And, the story concept sounds AWESOME.

What’s MESMO DELIVERY about? Mesmo Delivery is about a don’t ask, don’t tell delivery service that employs Sangrecco, an aging Elvis impersonator, and a retired boxer named Russo. From there, we follow the pair as they descend into a gritty, grungy hell of shady deals, and shadier characters. There’s some very cool storyline twists, and turns, so we’re trying not to say too much about the plot, because it’s one of those stories that pulls you in, and takes you to some very unexpected places. It’s a very cool action/horror kind of vibe that the book carries.  It almost reminds you of something like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, with the level of violence and consequences that apply to it.

Why we love it? Well, first off.. the artwork is INCREDIBLE. I mean, I think most of you guys can tell that I tend to pay more attention to writers than artists, but I do appreciate good art, and dude, Rafael Grampa has got it. The characters in the book are ugly, but in that noble way, where you can almost hear the sounds of Johnny Cash playing in the background as they crash through their twisted world. The characters are over-the-top, but the dialogue helps keep them grounded in believability. From the story, to the art, to the whole aesthetic of the book in general.. we can’t talk enough good about MESMO.

MESMO DELIVERY kind of feels like a weird cross between SCALPED and THE GOON. Gritty as hell, hardcore to the max, but, also, very much over-the-top. We can’t recommend this one enough folks, check it out this week!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #620 *THE GAUNTLET PT 9* THE RETURN OF MYSTERIO CONCLUDES HERE!

The Gauntlet storyline that’s been running through Spider-man has been top notch all the way through. There’s just something that’s cool about getting Spidey back to his roots, and reintroducing all the classic Spider-man villains we all grew up with. From the very start with the new twist on Electro, up through the new Rhino… it’s been good reads all the way through.

What is the Gauntlet? The Gauntlet is an over-arching themed storyline that’s running through AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. It began in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #512, and has consisted of two and three issue mini-story arcs reintroducing many of Spide-man’s deadliest classic Rogues (Sandman, Electro, Rhino, ect). The whole thing is leading up to the return of the Sinister Six, and is kind of a way of wearing Spidey down one by one, for the devastation that The Sinister Six will deliver en masse.

Want to catch up on THE GAUNTLET? Click here for the Third Eye Gauntlet Checklist. All issues are currently in stock here at Third Eye!

Now, onto the current story arc.. Mysterio! The reintroduction of MYSTERIO has been pretty badass, and the character is as vicious as he’s ever been. This Wednesday, we see the third and final chapter of Mysterio’s “introduction arc.” Marcos Martin’s artwork in this arc has been incredible, and Dan Slott has been able to deliver a very fresh, fast storyline that has kept us interested. In fact, I think that’s part of what has made the GAUNTLET so good is the rotating arcs have featured different creative team, giving each classic Spidey villain their own distinct feel, and energy. In other words, what works for Sandman, may not work for Rhino, and so on. We haven’t seen much of Mysterio, other than him acting as a behind-the-scenes puppet master, but we’re expecting in this week’s issue to see what’s up with his motivations, and renewed interest in the wallcrawler.

HELLBLAZER: PANDEMONIUM GRAPHIC NOVEL ARRIVES WEDNESDAY! BRAND NEW STORY! ORIGINAL WRITER JAMIE DELANO RETURNS TO CONSTANTINE WITH LOSERS ARTIST JOCK!

As long-time Hellblazer fans, we’re very excited about the news of original series writer, Jamie Delano, returning to Constantine’s world again. And, even better, is he’s paired up with the incredibly talented Jock for the art duties on the book. And, even better than better, is that the plot behind this new original graphic novel featuring everyone’s favorite con artist sounds pretty damn cool.

First off, Delano takes Constatine to a place he’s never been: Iraq. The ultimate anti-authoritorian, Constantine, has been somehow convinced (or coerced) by government agents to be their interrogation expert on a P.O.W who’s been driving all the other interrogators mad with some form of magic.

Delano carefully crafts a tale where the politics don’t get in the way of the story, but are still made relevant in regards to Constantine and his world. The real cool aspect of Constantine’s new surroundings is all of the interesting occultism, and mysticism that hasn’t really been explored that deeply before in the pages of Hellblazer.

Jock’s artwork fits the story perfectly, making it so you can almost feel the oppressive sunlight beating down on you, and feel the sand stinging your face. His art, and Delano’s story makes a perfect match, and the end result is a damn good Hellblazer story. Probably one of the best ones we’ve seen in a few years.

WARREN ELLIS’S NEXTWAVE ULTIMATE AGENTS OF H.A.T.E
COLLECTION TRADE PAPERBACK OUT THIS WEEK! ONE OF ELLIS’S BEST! HILARIOUS, WHACKED OUT, OVER-THE-TOP SUPERHERO SCI-FI MARVEL MADNESS!

Back in 2006, one of the best damn Marvel comics of this past decade was released. A rare fusion of over-the-top superhero awesomeness, twisted humor, bigger than life sci-fi madness, and of course, a generous helping of the inimitable Warren Ellis, Nextwave quickly rose to the top as one of those books that many comic fans hadn’t read, but anyone who had.. LOVED IT. Not just loved it, but we were fanatical about it. Talking about it in reverant tones. And now, after a couple years of the first volume trade paperback of this series being out of print, Marvel has put the complete series (volumes 1 and 2 of the trade paperbacks) together in one giant slab of awesome. So, lets talk a little about what the heck NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E is all about.

WHAT IS NEXTWAVE? NEXTWAVE was a series that was written in two issue story arcs.  Each issue starting with a humorous F.A.Q in which the questions are answered in enthusiastic, over-the-top, marketing language that goes into some strange and disturbing territories. This also helps introduce the characters to readers, as well as fleshing out the world for first-time readers. The actual NEXTWAVE team, AGENTS OF H.A.T.E, is composed of several minor, third-string Marvel characters, like  Monica Rambeau, the former Captain Marvel, Tabitha Smith, formerly known as Boom Boom / Meltdown from X-FORCE, Aaron Stack, the Machine Man, Elsa Bloodstone, the Monster Hunter, and a brand new character only known as The Captain (formerly known as CAPTAIN ####, but apparently the words were so horrible that, allegedly, Captain America beat the hell out of him, and left him in a dumpster with a bar of soap in his mouth). This team are known as H.A.T.E, which stands for Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort, and are tasked with fighting U.W.M.D (Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction). Once the team finds out they’re funded by S.I.L.E.N.T, a terrorist group, they pack their bags, and hightail it in the Shockwave Rider. They fly around, getting into messes, destroying U.W.M.Ds S.I.L.E.N.T has planted all around the country as H.A.T.E commander Dirk Anger (a parody of NICK FURY) pursues them.
The U.W.M.Ds include Fin Fang Foom, Broccoli Men, Ultra-Samurai, and the Mindless Ones.

Why We Love NEXTWAVE? Warren Ellis once described his process on NEXTWAVE as being the Authtority stripped of all logic, and insanity. He said it’s an absolute distillation of the superhero genre, and said that he was going for a series that was 100%, pure, unadulterated comic book mayhem and fun. People kicking people, and exploding.  And, this, this is why we love NEXTWAVE. It’s funny as hell, violent as hell, and has an insane energy that literally leaps off of each and every page. The dialogue, of course, is on point, and sharp as hell, with Ellis putting his distinct flavor on both that and the high-action storytelling. The characterization is quirky as hell, but awesome. Machine Man as an alcohol-chugging, human-hating jaded, bitter robot, Boom Boom talking in internet speak, and memes, and more make the cast really shine. And, then there’s the flashbacks, where we see characters like Captain America, Ulysses Bloodstone, and The Celestials acting comedically out of character. NEXTWAVE feels like a weird cross between bigger than life Silver Age MARVEL COMICS, post-modern superhero storytelling like THE AUTHORITY and the ULTIMATES, an internet forum where people post pictures of cats in zany messes, and a 16-bit shoot’em up video game.

In other words, NEXTWAVE is awesome.

This Wednesday, we’ll have the complete NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E ULTIMATE COLLECTION trade paperback available here at Third Eye, and if you just flat out enjoy good comics, we recommend picking it up.

CHOKER #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* – BRAND NEW HARDBOILED CRIME NOIR MINI-SERIES FROM BEN TEMPLESMITH (artist on FELL, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, ect). FANS OF FELL CHECK THIS OUT!

One of our favorite artists here at THIRD EYE is BEN TEMPLESMITH. He’s done an incredible amount of stuff, including the modern classic series FELL, the horror series that spawned a franchise 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, the DEAD SPACE comics, and much, much more. His style is unique, fresh, and very cool.. and it’s a perfect fit for crime noir series, as showcased by FELL.

This is why we’re so freakin’ stoked about his brand new series CHOKER from IMAGE COMICS. The story of CHOKER features Johnny “CHOKER” Jackson, who was once one of SHOTGUN CITY’s most promising police officers, and is now a bitter private detective. And, now he’s been offered his job back on the force, provided he can nail a twisted drug dealer that’s selling a very exclusive product. Oh, and he’s got a terrible case of something called Alien Hand Syndrome.

Judging from the preview pages we’ve seen, this one looks very promising as an exploration of a dirty, filthy city brimming with corruption and despair. The perfect setting for a good crime noir comic. And, while the premise does seem very familiar, considering we’re all very big fans of FELL, we’re sure it’s got a much different twist than Fell, not to mention the storytelling of FELL is very much dependant upon the unique format Ellis uses for it. In other words, this is a fresh new crime noir book that is going to kick seven different kinds of ass. Templesmith has proven in the past he’s got a good knack for plotting, and his artwork speaks for itself.

Check out a preview of CHOKER #1 by clicking here.

GRANT MORRISON’S ALL-STAR SUPERMAN VOLUME 2 TRADE PAPERBACK AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

The second half of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s (the creative team that launched the current hit series, BATMAN AND ROBIN) ALL-STAR SUPERMAN arrives this Wednesday in softcover, and it’s definitely a big deal. While it’s been almost a year since the actual hardcover of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN v.2 arrived, we do know that some of you have been waiting for the second volume to hit softcover, and we’re sure you’re gonna be stoked to finish up this epic run.

Morrison’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN is probably one of the best takes on the Man of Tomorrow we’ve ever read. This storyline came out back before Geoff Johns had shown us why Superman can be cool, and we can proudly say that this series was the first in opening the door to us really appreciating the character of SUPERMAN. From the storytelling to the artwork, it’s top notch all the way through. Not familiar with ALLSTAR SUPERMAN? Here’s the skinny..

What’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN all about? Grant Morrison did something that, at the time, was impossible. He showed us how cool the Silver Age was, and how cool those concepts could be. In this 12 issue limited series, Morrison stripped the Man of Steel down to his timeless, iconic appeal, and showed us why he is one of the best comic book characters of all time. The story? Superman is dying of what is essentially a super-cancer, and each issue deals with him tying up his affairs and leaving the world in the best shape possible that he can.

Basically, when a team of scientists on a mission to explore the sun ends up in danger, Superman swoops in to save the day from a genetically enhanced clone of Lex Luthor. Luthor, of course, has orchestrated all of this to overwhelm Superman’s cells with a massive amount of solar radiation, giving him the power to project his bioelectric aura, but also overloading his cells.. and leaving him with one year to live. Superman hides his impending death from the public, but embarks on a 12 issue journey to wrap up his affairs. Moments ranging from his reveal of his secret identity to Lois, and the design of a “Super” suit for her to be like him for a day, to the death of Pa Kent, all make for very heart-touching moments in Superman lore. The series more or less takes the Silver Age quirkiness of the old Superman comics, and puts a modern day spin on it, making for a really cool read. You see that some of the things that make Superman great are the bigger than life scenarios he ends up finding himself in. The story is all set within it’s own continuity, allowing Morrison to do exactly what he wishes with the story, and making the story stand alone as a solid piece of storytelling.

Simply put, this is one of the best Superman stories of all time, and even if you HATE the character.. we guarantee that by the end of the first chapter of the first trade paperback, you’ll end up in love with the whole concept of Superman and the world he exists in.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN volume 1 trade paperback is currently in stock now at Third Eye, and volume 2 will be available in softcover this Wednesday.

“WONDERLAND” PUBLISHERS ZENESCOPE UNVEIL NEW SERIES: SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY ILLUSTRATED #1 THIS WEDNESDAY!

The fine folks at Zenescope who’ve brought you twisted renditions of the Alice in Wonderland sagas, and now currently, with their dark take on the world of NEVERLAND, have brought us a brand new series in addition to their library, in the shape of SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY ILLUSTRATED. This new series takes classic Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories, and ideas, but adds a brand new twist to them, and of course, the killer cutting edge artwork of Zenescope’s impressive roster of artists.

It looks to be a throwback to the old pulp fiction tales of way back when, but with a modern twist, and judging from Zenescope’s track record on stuff like Wonderland, and Grimm Fairy Tales, this one should be a fun, tongue-in-cheek twist on some great sci-fi yarns.

PUNISHERMAX #4 CONTINUES JASON AARON’S (writer of SCALPED) BRUTAL, UNRELENTING RUN ON THE PUNISHER! THE BEST PUNISHER RUN SINCE GARTH ENNIS’S MAX RUN CONTINUES! ENTER: BULLSEYE!

Every issue of Jason Aaron’s new run on PUNISHERMAX takes the level of brutality up another notch. We thought he couldn’t top issue #2, but he totally did with some of the ridiculous, brutality that was in issue #3. We were definitely of the school of thought that when Garth Ennis’s character-defining 60 issue run on PUNISHER ended, there wasn’t much left to  say, but we were wrong. Aaron has taken the ball that Ennis left behid, and ran with it. The series feels like it’s picked up shortly after the end of Ennis’s run, and carries the same tone perfectly.

In addition, Aaron has added a lot of interesting new dynamics to the world of PUNISHER MAX, including the introduction of characters like Kingpin into the gritty, realistic world of PUNISHER MAX.

For those of you unfamiliar with the world of PUNISHER MAX, it’s basically a separate continuity from the regular 616 Marvel Universe. There are no superpowers in this world, and the Punisher mostly goes head to head with real criminals ranging from the Mafia to Russian slavers to war criminals and more. Existing Marvel characters are introduced at some points, but they’re chosen only by being within the bounds of believability (i.e Kingpin, or Nick Fury), and their superhuman attributes are downplayed (no Nick Fury jetpacks, no Kingpin kung fu).

And, this is the perfect setting for a character like the Punisher, who’s portrayed as more of a lone sociopath, in the vein of Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle, than a rocket-launcher toting superman.

And, in this week’s latest issue of PUNISHERMAX, it looks like we might be seeing just how the MAX version of Bullseye operates. Should be awesome.

Wanna catch up on PUNISHER MAX? We currently have plenty of issues 1, 2 and 3 in stock here at Third Eye.

DAYTRIPPER #3 CONTINUES VERTIGO’S KILLER NEW SERIES!

One of the best new Vertigo series we’ve seen in some time is DAYTRIPPER from the team of Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. This series, only three issues in, has proved to be one of the most poignant slice-of-life tales we’ve seen in quite some time… with a very cool twist on the everyday trials and tribulations of a young obituary writer who feels he’s not living up to the standards he’s set of himself.

I don’t want to give away too much for those of you who haven’t read the first issue yet, but it’s got a very shocking ending, and then from there goes into some very unexpected territory in issue #2. For those of you who did read #2, then you can see the direction the story’s taking, which while different from what I had expected.. is very cool.. showing us the past of the main character, Bras.

I think what’s kind of unique about Daytripper is also what makes it kind of hard to explain… it’s a complete mystery, but in a good way. The writing and art is so good that you almost could care less about what the story is ABOUT, and you just kind of let it pull you in, and carry you where the story’s going. Moon and Ba obviously have many surprises up their sleeves with this one, and we feel that each issue is going to continue to confirm what we thought from the start: this series is going to be something special.

If you’re not yet reading Daytripper, and enjoy stuff that captures the small moments in life well, while still weaving a compelling tale, then we highly recommend checking it out. We currently have plenty of issues #1, and issue #2 in stock, so catch up to issue #3 this week here at Third Eye.

THE ANCHOR #5 and THE ANCHOR TP v.1 (collecting issues 1-4, only $9.99) ARRIVE THIS WEEK FROM BOOM! (publishers of IRREDEEMABLE & INCORRUPTIBLE) – HELLBOY MEETS KAIJU MONSTER FIGHTING INSANITY!

One very cool, little sleeper book that started late last year was BOOM!’s ANCHOR ongoing series. This book has been a lot of fun, and takes a couple of standard comic book ideas (a holy avenger, a giant monster fighter, ect ect) and puts a fresh new spin on them. The story of the Anchor is that of a hulking beast of a man who was taken in by a monastery many years ago, and turned into what the series creators have called “God’s Leg Breaker.”

Basically, the Anchor lives a dual existence, half of him (his soul) in the Borderlands guarding Earth from Demons that try to escape to Earth, and the other half (his body) doing a very similar job for those demons that actually do escape to Earth. While at first look, you might think the series is just a Hellboy rip-off, but it’s really got it’s own thing going on. While Hellboy plays up more of a mystery, occultism angle, and exploration of folklore and myth, the Anchor is much more of a big hulking avenging monstrosity beating the snot out of giant monsters kind of thing.

The artwork makes the series pop, and the colors especially give the book a very fresh feel. It really feels like somebody took the elements of something like Hellboy, and crossed it with every Ultraman or Godzilla movie you could think of.

This week, Boom, who’s really built a solid reputation for itself on books like IRREDEEMABLE, and INCORRUPTIBLE, delivers both the first trade paperback of THE ANCHOR (collecting issues 1-4), and then the 5th issue, providing readers who may have not yet jumped onto the series the perfect time to hop aboard. All in all, it’s a really fun series, and if you’re into stuff like Hellboy, the Goon, or just a fan of seeing giant monsters getting the hell out beat out of them, then we recommend it. Great art, great story, this one’s definitely an overlooked gem.

X-MEN: PIXIE STRIKES BACK FEATURES FAN-FAVORITE X-CHICKS X-23, ARMOR, AND PIXIE!

This one caught my eye, because of two things: 1) The cover is great. Stuart Immonen does some of the best covers, seriously. 2) It’s featuring three X-Characters that are what I’d consider relatively new (all three being created during the 2000s), and all three being pretty cool characters. It’s funny too, because just the other night I was having a conversation with someone here at the shop about how the X-Books always try to shoehorn in new characters, and very rarely do they stick. Well, looking at the cover of this book, it looks like I’ve proven myself wrong, because X-23, Armor, and Pixie are all “new” characters that not only have “stuck” but have really won over loyal fan-followings.

Personally, I dig X-23. I think she’s a great character, and when she was first introduced, I thought I’d hate the character, but it turned out that the writers behind her had a good idea, and it worked. And, then Armor, of course, is also a very cool character, who by the end of Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run, had won me over. Plus, you’ve got Pixie, who a lot of fans really dig, Mercury, and Blindfold, who’re also both pretty cool.

Anyways, what the hell is this one all about you’re probably wondering? Well, it’s a 4 issue limited series where this rag-tag bunch of X-Girls face something they’re not exactly prepared for: High School. Kathryn Immonen did a great job I thought writing the Hellcat mini last year, so it should be cool to see how this one plays out.

Staff Picks
Steve – DEMO #1 – This was AWESOME. It was a strong tie between this and SIEGE #2, but I figured since Torma was already doing SIEGE 2, this would win out. The first issue of DEMO delivered everything I hoped, and it shows why Brian Wood is one of the greats.
Trish – Legends: Enchanted - This was awesome! Jack rides a motorcycle powered by giant blood. Red Riding Hood’s a monster hunter. A real cool steampunk horror take on fairy-tale worlds.
Torma – SIEGE #2 - TOTAL MAYHEM. This is one of the best comics Ive read this year so far. I’ve always liked the Sentry, but this issue proves why he’s such a badass.
Matt – The Boys #39- One of the best issues in this series yet. This book continues to be one of my favorites every month.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 1/6/10

IT’S HERE! THE SIEGE BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY IN SIEGE #1, ACCOMPANIED BY SIEGE: THE EMBEDDED #1!

The biggest Marvel event since the Civil War begins this Wednesday here at Third Eye in the pages of SIEGE #1! The Marvel Universe is going to be making a shift into a whole new era for this decade, and SIEGE is the beginning of that era. The reason why this event is so special is because it serves as many things: the ending of the Dark Reign storylines and subplots, an accessible entry-point for readers looking to jump into the Marvel Universe, and the launching point of what Marvel has dubbed “The Heroic Age.”

The general story of SIEGE, and the ramifications it’s sure to be having on Marvel, is something that was conceived years ago by Bendis, and the other top creators at Marvel.  The plot lines to Siege have been being built since the launch of CIVIL WAR, and this kind of serves as both the end of an era, and the beginning of a new era.
Now, the question that I’m sure a lot of you are thinking is: Can I jump into Siege without an extensive prior knowledge of the Marvel Universe and it’s events from the last few years? And, the answer is YES, you can. I do recommend snagging a copy of the SIEGE CABAL one-shot that kicked everything off a month ago (still in stock here at Third Eye), but other than that, it’s relatively easy to jump right in.
Of course, if you find yourself hooked on what’s going on, we can definitely point you in the right direction on what to get caught up on for the series.
As for the actual meat and potatoes of what SIEGE is about? Well, here’s the lowdown.. it’s the fall of Norman Osborn, it’s the reuniting of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, and it’s the turning point for the Marvel Universe. The actual story? Basically, Loki is subtly manipulating Norman Osborn into invading Asgard. Loki justifies it by saying it’s not good for the Asgardians, OR Humans to be in such a close proximity to one another. Of course, Osborn needs a reasoning for taking the Dark Avengers, the combined forces of the U.S Military and SHIELD, and more and waging war on a City of Gods. And, so it begins. An Asgardian is set up as the public fall guy, causing the deaths of thousands of innocent bystandards, and Osborn is ready to siege Asgard.
Meanwhile, Loki is pulling the strings, and making the manipulations to get things to this point. You can bet that he has lofty ambitions of taking the throne of Asgard from his brother Thor.
This story is going to be a HUGE event that will bring the deaths of some characters, the resurrections of others, and will set the stage for the next decade of Marvel Comics. If AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED and CIVIL WAR were the books that set up things for the first decade of the 21st Century, then SIEGE is the book that sets things up for the era of 2010 and beyond.
From what I’ve read and heard, one of the strongpoints of SIEGE #1 is that it doesn’t waste time and gets right into the action. If you felt that Dark Reign had gotten a little stale, and there wasn’t much happening at some points, then SIEGE makes you forget about that right away. Several of the Dark Avengers gett key moments that’re gonna leave your jaws dropped. And, for those of you like myself who’re big Thor fans, from what I’ve seen, he has some truly EPIC defining moments.
With a killer creative team of BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and former Thor artist, Olivier Coipel, I think that you’ll all really enjoy SIEGE. It looks to be accessible, action-packed, well-paced, and is beautifully illustrated. And, with the fact that SIEGE ends a week before IRON MAN 2 debuts in theaters, and Marvel’s Free Comic Day book being an Iron Man/Thor one-shot by John Romita JR and Matt Fraction, well I think it’s safe to say that the events happening in SIEGE could be very, very important on a very, very broad scale.

SIEGE THE EMBEDDED #1 EXPLORES THE WHOS, THE WHATS, AND THE WHYS OF THE SIEGE!

Alongside the release of SIEGE this week, we get to see the launch of a 4 issue mini-series that will be explaining a lot of the in-between pieces in SIEGE that may not get fleshed out as well. This four issue series provides not only a man on the street view at what’s happening in the pages of SIEGE, but also the whos, the whats, and the whys of Osborn, Loki, and the rest of the major player’s actions.
Normally when Marvel runs their events, there’s a nice solid sister book to the main book, and it looks like the Embedded will be filling that role this go around.

WALKING DEAD VOLUME 11: FEAR THE HUNTERS ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! WANT TO HOP ONTO THE MONTHLY SERIES? PICK UP ISSUES #67, AND #68 ALONGSIDE VOLUME 11 TO GET CAUGHT UP! Not reading Walking Dead? Try Volume 1 this week at Third Eye for only $9.99, and get your $ back if you don’t like it!

Here it is, everybody! The series that EVERYONE is foaming at the mouth for the next trade paperback of arrives this Wednesday with it’s latest installment. And, I know that I write about how great the series every time a new installment comes out, but I can’t help it.. Walking Dead remains one of the most consistently entertaining, and enjoyable monthly comic series on the stands. Not only does it read great in the monthlies, but it also reads fantastic in the collected editions. So, before I go any further telling those of you who’re already hooked what you already know, let me preach the WD gospel to those of you who haven’t yet tried the series.
First off, it doesn’t matter who you are, or what your taste in comics is, you will love Walking Dead. I have not yet had someone not like this series. It’s that freaking good. Now, why is Walking Dead such a big deal? Well, lets rewind back six or seven years ago when the series first launched. There were a sea of zombie comics on the racks. It was right around the Great Zombie Revival of 2002/2003, when Dawn of the Dead got re-made, and the undead became chic. And, when Walking Dead was released by some guy named Robert Kirkman that no one had really heard of… well, most people missed it. Now, as the series has gone on (now on issue #68) for the last several years, it has amassed one of the most die-hard, loyal, and rabit fan-bases I have ever seen in a comic. And, it’s well deserved. Walking Dead is not just a story about zombies, in fact, the zombies are the backdrop, and the real monsters are the desperate human beings trapped in a world crumbling down around them. You almost forget about the zombie threat, until they wander into scene, and take a hunk out of somebody. But, what makes Walking Dead good is the characters, and the storytelling.
Robert Kirkman (who also writes HAUNT, INVINCIBLE, and much more) builds his characters up, makes them so human that you feel like you know them, and then sometimes.. he abruptly kills them off, just when you’ve gotten attached. There are so many spoiler moments that punch you in the gut in this series, it’s unbelievable. And, each issue, as well as each graphic novel leaves you on such a sharp, cliffhanger that you want to scream.
A testament to Walking Dead’s quality, and measure is how it is one of the very few series I’ve seeen where someone who is normally strictly a trade paperback only person, will break down and start getting the issues.
This week, in celebration of the release of the 11th volume of WALKING DEAD, we’re running a special promotion: Buy Walking Dead Volume 1 for only $9.99, and if you don’t like it, bring it back for a full refund. Hell, buy a copy for that friend of your’s you’re trying to get into comics, and if THEY don’t like it, then bring it back for a refund. This is the kind of comic book that comes around once a decade, and if there was one book that I’d put at the very top of a Best Of The 2000s list… it’d be Walking Dead.
Click here to read the Wiki entry on Walking Dead for more info.
And, as for those of you who’re already eagerly awaiting the 11th volume, don’t worry, we have a big stack coming in on Wednesday. However, you know how crazy the demand for these are, so if you do want us to hold you a copy, feel free to shoot me an email and let me know, and we’ll do so. Want to hop onto the monthly series? Can’t handle the long, long waits between trades? We’ll have plenty of both WD #67, and #68 in stock for you to do just that!
BLACKEST NIGHT “BACK FROM THE DEAD!”RESURRECTS TWO CULT CLASSIC DC FAVORITES, AND BRINGS TWO EXCITING STORYLINE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PAGES OFSUICIDE SQUAD #67 (A must for Secret Six fans) AND WEIRD WESTERN TALES #71

What is “DC Back from the Dead?”
January is going to be a skip month for Blackest Night, meaning that Blackest Night #7 will not be shipping until February 24th. Now, I know, it sucks that we’re going to have to wait a little longer for the next installment, especially after the freaking rock n roll ass-kicker that was Blackest Night #6. However, DC is letting the story continue to be told throughout the month of January in the pages of 8 one-shot issues that are resurrecting fan-favorite series. And, man, the concept IS awesome.
Check it out, here’s the deal… Blackest Night mastermind, Geoff Johns, has scoured the DCU, and handpicked these titles dating all the way back to the Silver Age. These are the books that were ahead of their time, or scored a personal place in many fan’s hearts. And, here’s where it gets even cooler… each one of the books features current age DC characters throwing down with Black Lantern-ized versions of characters tied to their history.
So, for example.. the Question #37 will feature Renee Montoya, the Question, throwing down with the Black Lantern Vic Sage Question… the original!
Not only do we get to see these great books return, but we also get to see the sick, and twisted Black Lantern spin on some of our favorite characters, and we love it. Geoff Johns was quoted as having said ““I wanted to create something tied to Blackest Night that would not only let us spotlight characters and explore ramifications from the main series, but also push the idea of raising the dead beyond comics. And have some fun doing it. I thought literally raising ‘dead’ titles would be different, fun and actually give me and the other writers a chance to explore the next level of Blackest Night. ” And, it’s pretty damn cool, seeing actual dead titles brought back from the dead for the story of Blackest Night to continue through.
Finally, the CREATIVE TEAMS! Greg Rucka writing an issue of the classic Denny O’Neil Vic Sage Question! Another issue of James Robinson Starman! Gail Simone and John Ostrander pairing up for Suicide Squad! I mean, it doesn’t get cooler than this.
So, give these a shot this week, folks. These definitely look like something a little more special than the normal tie-ins, and I really think they all look like quality reads.
Suicide Squad #67This one’s being penned by the current writer of cult favorite SECRET SIX, and then the master behind the classic Suicide Squad run of the ’80s. Suicide Squad was the first real book in the ’80s to define grim and gritty. While Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen kicked the doors off their hinges, it was Suicide Squad that quietly, but consistently took modern superhero comics into darker territory. A series about criminals in the DCU being recruited for special missions that they weren’t intended to come back alive from STILL manages to be an intense, and gritty read. And, it should be very interesting to see which Black Lanterns are rising up to come for the current Secret Six, and what skeletons are going to come flying out of Suicide Squad’s closet.
Weird Western Tales #71 - Some of DC’s coolest characters are their often overlooked Weird West line-up. Jonah Hex has one of the most underrated monthly ongoings out on the stands right now, and with a movie due out this summer, he’s going to be getting a bit more attention. What’s really intriguing about this one though is the fact that this is one of the first DC Comics I’ve seen written by Editor-In-Chief Dan Didio. And, with the buzz on his new direction on Outsiders continuing to build, I’m excited to see how his chops are. As for the actual issue.. .the concept is genius.. every single dead DC Wild West character, from Jonah Hex to Bat Lash, are rising from their graves as Black Lanterns in the modern world, and wreaking havoc. How cool is it going to be to see a Black Lantern Hex throwing down with DCU Heroes?
BLACKEST NIGHT WONDER WOMAN #2 FOLLOWS UP THE KILLER FIRST ISSUE OF THIS LIMITED THREE-ISSUE SERIES!

This one was a real surprise for me. I mean, I have come to expect a pretty high level of quality out of most of the Blackest Night tie-ins, but the first issue of Blackest Night Wonder Woman delivered the goods.. BIG TIME! I did have reasonably high hopes for the book due to the fact that Rucka was writing it, and his run on Wonder Woman was one of the best I think that’s been done in recent times. The fact is though, is that it’s very rare that Wonder Woman really clicks as a character. Her shining moments always seem to be in Elseworlds series, or things like DC New Frontier. But, hold up.. this 3-issue limited series taking place in the world of BLACKEST NIGHT is a good, ass-kicking portrayal of the Amazon Princess.
I mean, the first issue kicks off with her taking Maxwell Lord’s head with a battle axe. How much cooler could you want WW?
And for those of you who’ve been following Blackest Night, then you saw the interesting turn of events in #6… where.. well.. I can’t drop spoilers. I will say that this issue looks to be taking place in between Blackest Night #5, and #6, as it looks like we see Wonder Woman prior to the events of BN #6.
Did you miss BLACKEST NIGHT WONDER WOMAN #1? No worries, we still have plenty in stock for you to get caught up with!

THE UNWRITTEN VOLUME 1: TOMMY TAYLOR AND THE BOGUS IDENTITY! ONE OF THE BEST NEW VERTIGO SERIES IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS! HARRY POTTER MEETS TWISTED CELEBRITY SCANDAL! A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF FABLES, SANDMAN, AND MORE!

One of the best new Vertigo series we’ve seen in the last few years has been the brand new UNWRITTEN from LUCIFER creative team, Mike Carey and Peter Gross. This series is GOOD. Simply put. On the surface, it’s easily summed up as Harry Potter meets Twisted Celebrity Scandal, but beneath the surface, there’s so much more going on. If you’re not yet reading the Unwritten, now is your chance to jump aboard, and for only $10, which is a steal. This is one of the best monthly books we’re reading here at Third Eye, and the story is just getting richer, and deeper.
The Unwritten is many different things, it starts out as a the simple tale of a fellow named Tom Taylor. His father was a famous writer who wrote a series of books called the Tommy Taylor books, so, think Harry Potter here. Being the child that his father based the Tommy Taylor character off, he’s had a relatively easy life, touring the convention circuit and cashing in on his father’s work and his likeness. A scandal erupts in the first issue that he’s not really the son everyone thought he was, and Tom Taylor’s life begins to crumble around him… and then he finds out he’s not real at all, but is in fact, the actual fictional character his father had been writing about, and has somehow crossed over into the realm of reality.
From there, the story takes off into something so deep, yet so simple, that it’s the main reason why we love the book so much. A literary conspiracy that touches everyone from Tom’s father to the story of Frankenstein to Rudyard Kipling and Oscar Wilde.
The different storytelling elements meld well, and range from excerpts of the Tommy Taylor novels, to blog postings, to the actual here and now of Tom Taylor. And, holy cow, the art manages to capture everything PERFECTLY.
For those of you who’re into high concepts, well-put together storytelling and a little bit of fun like you’d find in Fables, then Unwritten is for you. In fact, I almost envy you guys who’re gonna pick up the trade, for getting the first five issues all at one time. Waiting 30 days for these things is TORTURE. And, for a $10 Vertigo first trade, they have packed it with a lot of great extras. You get a foreword from Fables creator Bill Willingham, an additional inclusion of prose and sketches that have yet to be used in the world of the Unwritten, and may not be.
One of the best series of 2009, we can’t recommend this one enough, folks!

ORC STAIN #1 DELIVERS QUIRKY, FUNKY ORC-KILLING MADNESS FROM RISING INDIE STAR JAMES STOKOE! A MUST-READ FOR KING CITY, COWBOY NINJA VIKING AND SCOTT PILGRIM FANS! IMAGINE “SCOTT PILGRIM” MEETS THE VIDEO GAME BRUTAL LEGEND

Here’s one I’m personally VERY excited about. Orc Stain is a brand new IMAGE series from another young, rising indie star, James Stokoe (most well-known at the moment for the killer WONTON SOUP series). Now, before I go further, let me say that I’m excited about this one for many different reasons. One of these is because the creator and his girlfriend were friends and co-workers of mine about five years ago. I’ve watched both of their careers progress pretty well as I ventured off into my own career of retailing, and it’s been pretty cool to see them really come into their own. In fact, James and Marley actually did some killer artwork for my old band’s demo CDs way back when. And, even then, I was floored by the dude’s art talent. I thought WONTON SOUP was good, but I think that ORC STAIN is where he’s going to really come into his own. The story sounds awesome, it sounds fresh, it sounds different, and it’s accompanied by his incredible, hyper-detailed artwork (which kind of reminds you of a blend of Tank Girl & Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett, Geoff Darrow, and old school Warhammer Tyranid box art).
Plus, Image has really been on a roll with all the great new series they’ve kicked off, so it’s going to be cool to see them venturing into the world of fantasy, albeit, in a very unique manner.
What’s ORC STAIN all about? It’s a fantasy story set on a war-ridden planet nearly entirely over-run by Orcs. You start the story following a spiritually bankrupt Orc who basically has the ability to find the weak spot in any object. He makes his living looting graves, but pretty soon he’s wanted by the crazy large armies of the Orc Tsar who needs his gift to unlock the organ of a long-dead God. This is the story of One-Eye.
Why is it going to rule? Well, it sounds like a striaght-forward sci-fi/fantasy story, but trust me, judging from what I’ve seen of James Stokoe’s previous work, there’s going to be a humorous, yet clever twist on the world, and it’s inhabitants. I’m sure we’ll see lots of Orcs getting blown up in all manners, and the one thing you can almost be sure you’re going to get is some seriously good artwork. Plus, it looks to continue the same trend of fresh, and hip new ideas coming out of IMAGE Comics these days (i.e CHEW, Cowboy Ninja Viking, ect).
You should definitely click here to read more about ORC STAIN #1, and totally pick it up this week, I think it’s going to rock!!
HAUNT #4 ARRIVES, AS ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) and TODD MCFARLANE’S ULTRAVIOLENT SMASH HIT NEW SERIES CONTINUES TO SET THE RACKS ABLAZE HERE AT THIRD EYE!

HAUNT has quickly become one of the monthly series I look forward to the most every month. I mean, the pacing, and storytelling has been great, with WALKING DEAD & INVINCIBLE mastermind ROBERT KIRKMAN handling the writing duties, and of course, the artwork is amazing with Ryan Ottley/Greg Capullo/Todd McFarlane working the comics triple threat.
But, I think the thing that I enjoy the most about HAUNT is that it takes me back to what it felt like to first be getting into comics. The book has a good, solid story, which of course, keeps me coming back, but it’s the visceral sense of violent fun, over-the-top bad guys, and flawed morality that’s striking a nerve with me. I mean, HAUNT is everything I loved about comics when I was 13, but with the modern sensibilities and quality of 21st century comics.
In other words, HAUNT is just plain good comics. Are you reading it yet? If not, here’s the rundown.. Black Ops soldier gets killed over not doing some dirty work for the company. Comes back, “haunts” his brother, trying to tell him what happened.. his brother, a priest, and he are completely estranged from one another. Agency sends folks to kill the brother, and he posesses his brother to rip their heads off… and thus, HAUNT is born. Cool powers, not afraid to shed a little blood, tons of internal conflict, a mysterious origin.. it’s everything you’d want out of a new superhero, you know?
If you haven’t yet hopped aboard HAUNT, we currently have issues 1, 2 and 3 still available for you to give it ago, and get caught up relatively easily.

VERTIGO CRIME: THE CHILL FROM CRITICALLYACCLAIMED CRIME NOIR NOVELIST JASON STARR AVAILABLE AT THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY! “THE DEPARTED” meets “SON OF SAM”

The new VERTIGO CRIME imprint has been one of the coolest successes we’ve seen for Vertigo in a while. Original graphic novels, running from about 150-250 pages, packed full of pulpy, crime noir storytelling that takes you from every corner of the world that you could possibly imagine. This one, THE CHILL, is probably one of the ones I am most excited for.
Jason Starr, the author, is an INCREDIBLE crime novelist, who has delivered some great noir masterpieces like LIGHTS OUT, and COLD CALLER. His style is sharp, violent, and has a machine-gun kind of rhythm that keeps you turning the pages as quick as the bodys are dropping. And, the artwork by Mick Bertilorenzi (who I actually am not that familiar with) is perfect.

one part noir cop tale, it’s a murder mystery that’s got it’s roots in the world of Celtic mythology. Imagine this.. you meet the most drop dead gorgeous girl you’ve ever seen, and she takes you down to a desolate part of town, for the night of your life…. and then, before you konw it, an old Irish man wearing celtic warpaint jams a ceremonial spear through your heart, and spits out some world in Gaelic. And, that’s just the set-up….
THE CHILL is a very cool, mean little graphic novel that takes two of my favorite things: hardboiled crime comics, and vicious horror comics, and fuses the two together seemlessly. I highly recommend it to fans of CRIMINAL, and HELLBLAZER.

CABLE #22 HOMECOMING PT 2 CONTINUES THE FINAL CHAPTER IN THE “MESSIAH” TRILOGY

The one thing that has really been consistently good out of the X-Family of books has been the books that factor strongly into the “Messiah” trilogy which began in MESSIAH COMPLEX, continued in MESSIAH WAR, and is now concluding in HOMECOMING. Of course, all of this paves the way for a cryptically entitled event known as SECOND COMING, but we’ll get to that when we get o that, you know?
Seriously though, Cable has been a solid, consistent read for almost the entirety of it’s run. There’s been a couple of blah issues here, or there, but the fact that Marvel has finally found a niche for this character that we thought had lost his luster back in the late ’90s, is pretty amazing.
And, the mystery of Hope is becoming clearer and clearer. I think it’s no secret that the last hope for the mutant race may just be the reincarnation of the Phoenix. But, of course, all the obvious clues they’re laying out might just be red herrings to lead me astray.
Either way, we’re stoked for the next part of this to hit this Wednesday, so, make sure not to miss it!

BPRD: KING OF FEAR #1 KICKS OFF A BRAND NEW OCCULT HELLRIDE THROUGH THE BPRD AND HELLBOY UNIVERSE THIS WEDNESDAY!

It’s always a cause for rejoice when we get a brand new BPRD series, and this Wednesday, we get to see the launch of the KING OF FEAR, which looks AWESOME. First off, it’s got Guy Davis handling the art, and dude.. Guy Davis is one of the most underrated guys working today. His style is very unique, and almost abrasive at first, but pretty soon, you realize how much you love it… without realizing you liked it in the first place. I know, that doesn’t make any sense, but I feel that Guy Davis is one of the best artists to deliver the goods on the Hellboy/BPRD front.
What is KING OF FEAR about? Well, those crazy plague frog things, and frog people, and other frog madness are finally going to be put to rest once and for all. And, Kate Corrigan is on her way to Hunte Castle in Austria (the sight where Hellboy originally took out the Conqueror Worm), to rescue special agent Johann Kraus.

PUNISHER MAX GET CASTLE ONE-SHOT – BRUTAL, HARD-HITTING TALE OF THE PUNISHER, THE S.A.S, AND AFGHANISTAN

The Punisher MAX one-shots are always solid, entertaining reads. The world that GARTH ENNIS originally set up has given many talented writers a great opportunity to write the PUNISHER how he should be written: NC-17, hard-hitting, real. A killer.
This one-shot hitting this Wednesday features characters from the infamous Barracuda storyline, where Punisher’s old war buddy, Yorkie’s, who is now dead due in part to the Punisher/Barracuda feud, son has come back to avenge his father’s death. The question is, does he blame the Punisher? We think he does.
This one is sure to be a solid, hard-hitting read, featuring a squad of S.A.S commandos who just returned from the mountains of Afghanistan, and are set to put the PUNISHER through a living hell. Question is though, is he the Hunter, or the Hunted?
FRANK MILLER’S DAREDEVIL BORN AGAIN FINALLY AVAILABLE AGAIN IN TRADE PAPERBACK!

Daredevil is one of those characters that has always had really good, strong stand-out stories that define the character. From the classic FRANK MILLER stories, to the more modern Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker stuff. But, the one Daredevil story that stands the test of time as one of the best Daredevil stories ever told has gotta be BORN AGAIN by FRANK MILLER (SIN CITY, 300, ect ect) and DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI (BATMAN YEAR ONE, ASTERIOS POLYP). This is just a plain incredible tale which takes the Man Without Fear through his lowest lows, and highest highs.
Karen Page, Matt Murdock’s former lover, sells his secret identity for a drug fix. And, from that point forward, we see the Kingpin take Daredevil down to the lowest of lows, dismantling his entire life piece by piece.
This is one that I really think can’t be done justice with just words. You have to read it, and with this new edition of the story now available in softcover, it’s the perfect time to give it a look.

SIEGE BEGINS THIS WEEK! THE MARVEL EVENT TO END ALL MARVEL EVENTS BEGINS HERE! IT ALL STARTS THIS WEEK IN “SIEGE: THE CABAL”-GET A CHANCE TO WIN AN EXCLUSIVE SIEGE:CABAL DAVID FINCH VARIANT WHEN YOU PICK UP SIEGE: THE CABAL THIS THURSDAY!

First off, before you read on, we’re going to be doing a special promotion this week. When you purchase SIEGE: THE CABAL this week here at Third Eye, you’ll be entered into a prize drawing for the 1 in 75 David Finch sketch cover of SIEGE THE CABAL!
The Marvel Event to End All Events Begins NOW! For the last seven years, Marvel has been building one amazing universe. It all began in AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED, and then culminated in the events of CIVIL WAR which led us directly into the DARK REIGN. Now, after seven years, Marvel is beginning the end of an era with SIEGE. Siege is the Marvel event to end all Marvel events. Basically, everything that’s come to be over the last several years, from the events of CIVIL WAR and HOUSE OF M to the recent machinations of Norman Osborn in DARK REIGN, are all coming to a head. The real high point of all this is that Marvel will be closing out the first decade of the 21st century with SIEGE, which will in turn usher in a whole new era for the Marvel Universe.

The most obvious change that we’ve been told to expect from Siege is the reuniting of Thor, Captain America and Iron Man. The holy trinity of the Marvel U. The big 3 of the Avengers. After over a decade of not having an Avengers team that carried those three at the same time, it looks like we’ll be seeing a triumphant return to that.

But, before we get there, it needs to be said that things are going to be pretty horrific for our heroes. We’re going to see characters die, we’re going to see characters change, and we’re going to see big changes sweep the entire Marvel Universe.

Now, lets talk about why we’re stoked about this here at Third Eye, and more specifically, what the scoop is on the official beginning of SIEGE in the SIEGE CABAL one-shot is all about.

The Creative Team – Marvel maestro, Brian Michael Bendis, has proven his track record many times before, and having him penning SIEGE means that all the plotlines and stories he’s laid out over the last few years will be coming together big time. The addition of Oliver Coipel, who most recently delivered the incredible artwork seen on the JMS run of THOR, as the series artist looks to be the perfect match to an event of this level. And, the fact that the moody, dark art styles of Michael Lark will be kicking off things with Bendis in the SIEGE CABAL one-shot means we’re in store for a very grim beginning for SIEGE.

The Characters – This is a book that’s going to touch nearly every corner of the Marvel Universe, but the focus being placed on Marvel icons like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, as well as heavyweight villains like Dr. Doom, and Loki, mean that we’re set for a very all-star cast of characters.

What It Means – Siege is going to be an incredible story, there’s no doubt about that. But, it’s the gravity of what it’s about that has us hooked. This is the official end of an era for Marvel, and the beginning of a new era. Whether you’ve been following the events of the Marvel Universe hardcore for the last few years, or if you’re a brand new reader, looking for a good entry point into modern day Marvel, Siege provides a great read for both.

Accessibile Storytelling and Blockbuster Changes – The other thing that I’m pretty excited about with SIEGE is the fact that it’s going to provide an accessible launching point for the Marvel Universe to many. Basically, this is going to be a tight, solid event that we haven’t seen the caliber of since CIVIL WAR. Things like Secret Invasion and World War Hulk are more of in-between pieces in the grand scheme of things, whereasa SIEGE carries a level of importance in the 616 Marvel Universe that we haven’t seen since CIVIL WAR.

Surprises – Marvel has been pretty tight-lipped on some of the big twists and turns to be expected, but we’ve been told that there’s going to be some very central characters dying, as well as some important characters returning. We’re going to see things like the 50 State Initiative finally fall to pieces, and a return to solid stories being told in each character’s individual books.

Norman Osborn Finally Gets What He Deserves – C’mon, you can’t tell me you’re not sick of this guy either? It’s going to be pretty satisfying to see him go down big-time.

What is SIEGE: THE CABAL – SIEGE: THE CABAL is the one-shot that officially kicks everything off for SIEGE. This is the starting point. Ground Zero. And, this is the book you want to read as sort of the official prologue to Siege. Basically, we’re going to see the dismantling of Osborn and his Cabal of villains that have been not-so-quietly running the Marvel Universe. Apparently, a big part of this unravelling, is due to Osborn and his desire to expand his dominion over the kingdom of Asgard. And, then there’s the fact that Loki’s been in Norman’s ear since this whole thing began a while ago. We’ll also see two new members who’re replacing Namor, and Emma Frost, after their departure from the group.
But, here’s the big draw… the first shots fired that are going to really lead us into SIEGE is the highly anticipated falling out, and throwdown between Osborn and Dr. Doom. And, we haven’t even begun to talk about all the other tidbits dropped about where this one-shot is going to touch on other characters in the Marvel Universe.

Win a 1 in 75 SIEGE: THE CABAL David Finch Sketch Cover – To celebrate the launching of this monumental Marvel event, we’re going to be running a special promotion this week. Beginning on Thursday with the release of SIEGE: THE CABAL, and ending Monday 12/7, everyone who purchases a copy of the regular SIEGE: THE CABAL book will be entered into a special drawing to win the rare 1 in 75 SKETCH cover by David Finch. This is a book that’s already fetching $70 in pre-orders. You can win it totally free this week just by picking up SIEGE: THE CABAL!

BLACKEST NIGHT DELIVERS TWO BIG NEW LIMITED SERIES THIS WEEK WITH BLACKEST NIGHT: THE FLASH #1 and BLACKEST NIGHT: WONDER WOMAN #1

Holy cow, is that cover awesome or what?? Okay, this week from the fine minds of the Blackest Night thinktank, we’re getting two new three issue limited series tie-ins to flesh out some corners of the DCU that Blackest Night is now hitting. Both of these bad boys look incredible, but first, we’re going to talk about BLACKEST NIGHT: THE FLASH #1.

Why we’re stoked? First, the creative team. Geoff Johns, one of the best writers working in comics today, and the man responsible for the entire Blackest Night saga, as well as the writer of the core BLACKEST NIGHT mini-series and Scott Kolins, the artist of many classic Geoff Johns Flash tales, as well as the more recent FINAL CRISIS: ROGUES REVENGE, are the perfect freaking team for Flash. These guys wrote what is in my opinion one of the best Flash runs to hit comics with stories like ROGUES, IGNITION, and more. And, to see them delivering the Blackest Night twist on the Flash, is perfect.
Second, the story itself. It’s Barry Allen and Wally West going head to head with all the dead Flash Rogues you know and love, who are now, of course, heart-eating Black Lanterns. Johns and Kolins have a track record of doing amazing stories with the Flash rogues, in fact, what they did by re-inventing the Rogues in their previous runs is incredible comics storytelling. And, to see them bringing their Flash magic to the world of Blackest Night is just too much. We are officially stoked. This one’s gonna be incredible.
Third, it’s Blackest Night! And, we’ve yet to see a bad Blackest Night book.

Blackest Night Wonder Woman is the other Blackest Night book hitting this week, and it looks just as promising as the Flash. Greg Rucka (writer of the current DETECTIVE COMICS/BATWOMAN, as well as the classic GOTHAM CENTRAL series) and Secret Six artist Nicola Scott (who is just plain AWESOME) will be delivering this three issue limited series that is supposed to be dishing out some HUGE changes to Wonder Woman as a character. And, you know what, we’re pumped for this because she needs a new approach!
Why we’re stoked? First, Wonder Woman needs a fresh start. Well, lets face it, it’s been a while since Wonder Woman has been a central part of the DCU like she deserves to be. Ever since she snapped Maxwell Lord’s neck, she’s kind of existed in her own corner of the DCU. And, because of this, we really have kind of lost interest in the character. And, see, that’s no good, because she IS a great character. There have been some mega-epic WW story arcs, from the Hiketia graphic novel to Jiminez’s killer run to the classic Perez stuff. And, this Blackest Night limited series is supposed to deliver BIG-TIME changes and crisises to the character. The fact that it’s happening under the Blackest Night banner (and it’s no B.S when I say that I’ve enjoyed every single one of these tie-ins, except for maybe that Solomon Grundy final chapter) makes it even better.
It’s Black Lantern Maxwell Lord! In the aftermath of Identity Crisis, and right before Infinite Crisis, Maxwell Lord revealed that he was one manipulative, power-hungry jerkface, and shot the Blue Beetle in the back of the head. And, Maxwell Lord got his just deserts when Wonder Woman, in a true case of Amazon justice, snapped his neck. The fact that Lord is now returned as a Black Lantern with a bone to pick with Wonder Woman is awesome.
Is Wonder Woman going to be the next to die? If SPOILER Kyle RaynerSPOILER could die, then we know that nobody is safe in the Blackest Night. There’s also been some speculation about Wonder Woman dying and returning as a Black Lantern because of the hidden shot of her action figure in the upcoming Blackest Night waves. And, of course, the cover to issue #3 is classified… soooo…. we don’t know.

Either way, both of these Blackest Night tie-ins look to continue the high quality level of storytelling that we’ve come to expect out of the Blackest Night event. And, we can’t wait to see how they read this week!

HAUNT #3 – THE DREAM TEAM HIT OF THE YEAR CONTINUES AS ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) & TODD MCFARLANE (LEGENDARY CREATOR OF SPAWN) KICK THINGS UP A NOTCH!

One of the big breakout hits this year has been the new IMAGE series HAUNT by a literal comics dream-team led by Robert Kirkman (the writer of WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, and many other killer reads) & comics legend, Todd McFarlane (the creator of SPAWN). The book evokes that kind of visceral excitement, and just plain “woah.. awesome” that you got when you were a teenager reading comics. The violence is over-the-top, and the book doesn’t shy away from gore, but there’s a tightly written story underneath the breakneck action sequences that keeps the book interesting. The first issue was a set-up issue, no doubt, and while it was good, we still weren’t totally sold. But, when the second issue arrived, and we tore through it, we knew we were hooked. You want a violent, fast-paced, fresh and exciting book? This is it right here. And, you know Kirkman, you know how he sets things up, gets you into a groove, and then completely turns everything upside down on you. Well, we can feel this coming in HAUNT. Damn, I’m loving this book.

For those of you who aren’t up to speed on the story behind HAUNT, let me give you a quick recap… HAUNT is the story of catholic priest Daniel Kilgore and his brother Kurt Kilgore. Kurt was a black ops merc who gets killed after refusing to do the dirty work of the organization he was working for. Kurt returns as a ghost (due in part to the strange experiments that you see early in the book), and warns his brother of oncoming danger. Bad guys show up, try to kill him, and HAUNT is born… Basically, Kurt, has posessed the body of his brother, and dishing out cold hard revenge on all the bad guys. Ripping off dude’s heads, fileting their brains, you know, usual vigilante-style stuff. And, of course, his brother, the priest, is not cool with this. This is the dynamic of Haunt. This is what makes it interesting. And of course, the over-the-top violence and breakneck action don’t hurt.

Want to get caught up on HAUNT? We’ve still got issues #1 & #2 in stock, so you can hop on without having too much to catch up on. Trust us, from the outstanding artwork to the top notch storytelling, HAUNT is comic goodness at it’s finest.

FALL OF THE HULKS BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY IN FALL OF THE HULKS ALPHA ONE-SHOT!

Spinning out of HULK and INCREDIBLE HULK, the gamma-irradiated throwdown of the century begins here this week in FALL OF THE HULKS ALPHA. We love a big smash in the face brawl here at Third Eye, and the larger than life fistacuffs happening in the Hulk world have been among some of our favorite guilty pleasures.
This week the storyline that begins to wrap up all the loose ends from stories like RED HULK and WORLD WAR HULK begins. The story gives us a thinktank composed of M.O.D.O.K (everyone loves MODOK!), The Leader, The Mad Thinker, Egghead, Red Ghost and the Super Apes, and Dr. Doom. This is a group who’s analyzed every battle, every defeat, and every angle concerning the Hulk to come up with the perfect battle plan to rid the Marvel Universe of every Hulk you can think of. Whether it’s the classic Bruce Banner Hulk, the Red Hulk, Skaar, She-Hulk, or A-Bomb, they’ve figured out how to get rid of them all.
This is going to be the biggest Hulk storyline since World War Hulk, and serves as a great jumping on point for a lot of you who haven’t been following the Hulk lately.
Why we’re stoked? Sometimes you just want your comics to be larger than life, and a little bit ridiculous. Sometimes you just want a fun, old school-style storyline full of killer art, crazy villains, and some of the most brutal superhero fights you can think of. And, with Fall of the Hulks, we know we’re going to get all that and more. Say what you will about Jeph Loeb’s Red Hulk, but the book is fun, and we still read it every month. And, if you’ve been sleeping on Greg Pak’s Incredible Hulk run, you’re missing out. The whole concept of Bruce Banner teaching his son, Skaar, how to actually BE a Hulk is pretty damn entertaining.

DARK AVENGERS ANNUAL #1 – A MUST-READ DARK AVENGERS ONE-SHOT FROM SERIES WRITER BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS

One of the consistently best Marvel books of 2009 has been Dark Avengers. This flagship title continues to be a top-of-the-stack read that we can’t get enough of here at Third Eye. If you’re not reading the current story arc that’s going on in Dark Avengers right now with Molecule Man, you are seriously missing out. The book is the best it’s been since the first three issues, and we really can’t recommend it enough.
But, enough about Dark Avengers, lets talk about this week’s DARK AVENGERS ANNUAL #1 one-shot that fleshes out the story of one of our personal favorites, Marvel Boy.
When Marvel Boy was originally introduced by Grant Morrison back in like 2000, if I remember right, it was one of the coolest limited series I had read. The book represented so well everything that modern superhero comics were  becoming, and really stuck with me. When Bendis began to use the character more with things like the Illuminati miniseries, it got me stoked. And, then when he disappeared in the pages of Dark Avengers 6.. it left me wondering.
Well, this week in the DARK AVENGERS ANNUAL, we wonder no more, because they’re exploring the ramifications of Marvel Boy and his abandoning of the Dark Avengers. It’s like the mob… you can’t leave unless you die. This issue explores just how Osborn plans to deal with Noh-Varr, and also showcases just how powerful the new Captain Marvel can be.
And, just from looking at the preview pages, this book hums with post-modern comic energy. It looks like it’ll be a good read.

SUPERGOD #2 – The Second Issue of Warren Ellis’s International Arms Race to Build the Perfect Superman Continues!

Supergod #1 BLEW US AWAY! Many writers have done the evil Superhuman thing, and hey, they’ve done it well (we LOVE Irredeemable, The Boys, and more), but the twist that Ellis has put on the idea is incredible. Basically, the world is in a superhuman arms race to build the first Superman. The first Supergod. And, coincidentally enough, each culture’s Superman, resembles their religious figures and ideals. The first issue featured India being scorched to the Earth, Pakistan nearly beginning World War III, and ended with a glimpse of America’s SUPERGOD, who of course looks like an average run of the mill guy.

The artwork, and writing in this made it one of the best new Ellis books we’ve read, and while the pacing was slow, it was a set-up book, and we know that this issue is where things are going to really fly off the hook.

If you missed #1, don’t worry, we still have some in stock, so you can catch up this week with issue 1 and issue 2.

THOR #604 - BRAND NEW STORY ARC, BRAND NEW DIRECTION! A GREAT JUMPING ON POINT TO ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS MARVEL HAS BEEN PUTTING OUT! THOR VS. DR. DOOM BEGINS HERE!

J.Michael Straczynski’s run on Thor was INCREDIBLE! The finale last week (Giant-Size Thor Finale) was one of the best issues I read last week, and even as a good stand-alone Thor story, it was a great read. And, now that everything has been tied up, and set up for the new run, we cannot wait to see where things go with this book. Marvel is starting things off right with this first issue of the new direction. It’s a great jumping on point, and even if you haven’t read Thor in years, or never read Thor, it provides a solid entry point for new readers. For those of you who like myself were a bit bummed to see JMS go, fear not, because the creative team picking up for him looks to be a good one.
Why we’re stoked? The book is being written by a rising star newcomer by the name of Kieron Gillen. Kieron Gillen has recently put out underrated cult hits like Phonogram, and on the Marvel side of things, he’s the guy who’s been making the Dark Avengers Ares limited series that’s happening so awesome. He’s definitely a name to watch, and we think Thor is going to be his breakout book. The art is being supplied by the incredibly talented Billy Tan, who delivered pencils on modern classics like the X-Men Space epic: Uncanny X-Men Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire. He also recently had a very solid stint on New Avengers.
And, then, onto the actual premise of the new story arc that begins here. Other than the fact that it serves as a new direction, and a great jumping on point, it’s also the big throwdown between Dr. Doom and Thor that’s been brewing ever since Doom and Loki’s machinations began.
So, yeah, it’s Thor vs. Dr. Doom, what more could you want out of a bigger than life over-the-top superhero tale? We feel that the new creative team is going to do very well on this book, and I guess we’ll find out on Wednesday how it is.

DEADPOOL TEAM-UP #898 – DEADPOOL GOES LUCHA LIBRE WITH THE ZAPATA BROTHERS!

It’s Deadpool gone Lucha Libre this month in the next issue of Deadpool Team-Up! From the creative team that brought us the killer DEADPOOL SUICIDE KINGS limited series last year comes this next edition of DEADPOOL TEAM-UP featuring the Zapata Brothers. I mean, what more could you want? Deadpool. Luchadore Bounty Hunters. A Drug Cartel. And a dead man with a huge price on his head?

The first issue of Deadpool Team-Up RULED, and we know we’re gonna get our quotient of Deadpool funny this week with the next issue.

JSA ALL-STARS #1 DEBUTS BRAND NEW ONGOING JSA SERIES THIS WEEK!

The JSA has experienced a real revival in the last decade and a half. Beginning with Geoff Johns’s long run, and re-invention of the characters (available in trade paperback here at Third Eye), and then continuing with the current run of FABLES writer Bill Willingham, JSA has managed to maintain a top tier spot as one of those DC books that you just have to read.
And, now, there’s going to be a double-dose of the Justice Society every month, with the brand new JSA ALL-STARS series kicking off. A new team, a new base, and new villains. The preview pages look solid, and we’ve seen nothing but good from most JSA books so far, so we’re excited to see how this one turns out.

365 SAMURAI & A FEW BOWLS OF RICE GRAPHIC NOVEL – BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL MEETS BONE

Certified Third Eye freshness coming to us this week in this 400-page slab of AWESOMEONESS that is being described by some as Blade of the Immortal meets Jeff Smith’s Bone. Gorgeouslly illustrated full page panels, with clean linework reminscent of Jeff Smith’s work, tell the story of an Edo-era swordsmen and his quest for survival and enlightement.

To be honest, we don’t know whole a lot about this book, but after looking at some preview pages, we thought it was worth spotlighting, and we personally can’t wait to get our hands on a copy and read it this week. This thing looks fresh as hell!

Trish - Beasts of Burden #3 – If you’re into Stuff of Legend, or stuff like Fables, then you should really check this one out. The character and life given to this book is great.
