MEET THE NEW GUARDIANS!

While BRIGHTEST DAY officially kicked off last week in BRIGHTEST DAY #0 (still in stock here at Third Eye!), it’s Green Lantern #53 that we’re really looking forward to seeing. This issue here pretty much serves as not just the beginning of BRIGHTEST DAY for Hal and the rest of the new Guardians, but also an almost epilogue for BLACKEST NIGHT.
We almost knew this was coming after seeing how things played out in Blackest Night 6,7, and 8, but, this week’s Green Lantern #53 makes it official: These are the New Guardians. And, now it’s going to be very intriguing to see where things are going to be heading for Hal, Atrocitus, Sinestro, Larfleeze, and company now that they actually have to work together and reach an agreement if their future endeavors as The Guardians are going to succeed.
Almost a year ago this week, DCU delivered GREEN LANTERN #43, which was the Prologue to BLACKEST NIGHT. It still remains (alongside issues 50, and 52) as one of the most important issues of Green Lantern to date; exploring the back-story of Blackest Night baddie, BLACKHAND, and setting up the BLACKEST NIGHT perfectly. We have a feeling that this week’s GREEN LANTERN #53 is going to have the same effect. A crucially important turning point for not just Green Lantern in regards to BRIGHTEST DAY, but for the Green Lantern title overall. There were some unanswered questions at the end of BLACKEST NIGHT #8, especially in regards to the Indigo Tribe, and we cannot wait to see how they’re answered in the scheme of things with GREEN LANTERN and BRIGHTEST DAY.
For those of you who may just be jumping onto things with the launch of BRIGHTEST DAY, make sure you check out GL #53 as well. While all the tie-ins for large storylines are not integral, the Green Lantern title, written by Geoff Johns (the man masterminding this whole thing) is an integral piece of the storyline, and has proven to be just as important as the core title itself (i.e BLACKEST NIGHT, and now, BRIGHTEST DAY). Not to mention that Green Lantern is just a DAMN GOOD book. You’ve got the writing of Geoff Johns, who’s probably one of the top three best superhero writers working today, and then the killer artwork of Doug Mahnke, who is extremely underrated as an artist, in our opinion. This book has been rocking and rolling for almost three years now, ever since things really kicked off with the Sinestro Corp Wars, and it’s just been getting better and better ever since. If you haven’t ever picked up an issue of GL before, GL #53 is a perfect spot to jump in, and start finding out why this series rules.
And, ontop of all this… we’re gonna have more Green Rings to give out this week, and each issue of GREEN LANTERN #53 comes with a GL ring! :)

BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 4 ACTION FIGURES AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

And, then, who could have a killer Green Lantern Wednesday without a nice new batch of BLACKEST NIGHT action figures? This has probably been the hottest line of action figures DC Direct has done in quite some time, and the sculpts on these figures are magnificent. Make sure you get your’s quick, ’cause they go out of production fast, and DC Direct is kinda slow to restock! We’ll have plenty in stock this Wednesday, so grab yourself your favorites, or a whole set!
BLACKEST NIGHT: DIRECTOR’S CUT ONE-SHOT EXPLORES THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES OF LAST YEAR’S BIGGEST COMICS EVENT! TONS OF EASTER EGGS, WRITER AND ARTIST COMMENTARY, and MANY “DELETED” SCENES

This 80-page one-shot looks pretty cool, and is sure to appeal to those of you who’re like me, and love to dig beneath the surface of the story to see the process and how we got to the finished product. This one-shot delivers several hidden Easter eggs, as well as the meanings behind some of the more cryptic moments of BLACKEST NIGHT. Plus, from what we read, there’s several “deleted scenes” that did not make it into the book, as well as never-before-seen character designs. Sounds pretty cool, and if last year’s Final Crisis Director’s Cut was any indication with it’s commentary by Morrison, a very cool insight into the mind of series writer, GEOFF JOHNS.
BRIGHTEST DAY SHINES ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE IN JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #44 *BRIGHTEST DAY TIE-IN*

In the aftermath of BLACKEST NIGHT, the brand new line-up of the JUSTICE LEAGUE is getting a big dose of sunburn courtesy of BRIGHTEST DAY. It looks like James Robinson and Mark Bagley are going to be pairing up the JLA with the JSA, as one of the characters featured in BRIGHTEST DAY ends up joining the JLA. The big tease though is who the mysterious villain (and we’re wondering just who else has returned from the dead in this whole thing…) that DC is teasing to reveal at the end of this issue, and which character will switch from JLA to JSA or vice versa?
We’re pumped for this tie-in, not just ’cause we’re stoked on everything BRIGHTEST DAY at the moment, but because it’s James Robinson doing the JSA again, and with his long history with the JSA, including the critically acclaimed “JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE” storyline, it’ll be cool to see him mix his old favorites with his current team of Justice Leaguers. Plus, I think the tease about who’s coming back from Blackest Night is pretty obvious by the cover, but the mysterious villain thing has my curiosity piqued. I mean, if there’s a buncha dead baddies running around recently returned… just which one is going to be quick to target the JUSTICE LEAGUE?

ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! BUY YOUR’S THIS WEEK, AND GET A FULL SET OF LANTERN RINGS, THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM!

If there’s anything that deserves DC’s prestigious “ABSOLUTE” treatment, it’s Geoff Johns’s now classic revival of Hal Jordan in GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH. This six issue limited series took a character that had been long-forgotten by many, and breathed fresh new life into him. More importantly, it was the ground floor for Geoff Johns’s road to building the DC Universe into the exciting and interesting place it is now today. The ABSOLUTE collections are always gorgeous, and this one is no exception, a giant over-sized hardcover that collects the full GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH mini-series, the first issue of the Green Lantern ongoing series, the preview story from Wizard Magazine, and then a very cool one-shot story from GREEN LANTERN SECRET FILES 2005, which features the incredible artwork of DARWYN COOKE.
And, like all ABSOLUTE-format books, this one is over-sized, so you can see Ethan Van Sciver’s gorgeous artwork bigger than life.
We still have a very limited quantity of power rings left over from last winter’s free ring promotion, and when you pick up your copy of Green Lantern Rebirth this week, you’ll receive a free full set of Lantern power rings, excluding the white ring which has not been released yet.

CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #1 KICKS OFF THE SEQUEL TO THE MOST DISTURBING SURVIVAL HORROR STORY WE’VE EVER READ… THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL, FOR SURE, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THIS ONE OUT WEDNESDAY! PLUS, MORE CROSSED TRADE PAPERBACKS BACK IN STOCK!

All right, by now, many of you have read the trade paperback collection of CROSSED that came out last week. And, by now, you too, are hooked like I have been, on the insanely awesome, yet sickeningly disturbing survival horror story of CROSSED. Lets face it, Garth Ennis rocked it out hardcore, and totally set the tone for extreme horror in comics. CROSSED was the equivalent of the first Napalm Death album. We hadn’t seen anything that hard-hitting before, and it’s completely raised the bar for many. And, this is why we cannot wait to read the sequel which begins this Wednesday. The fact that David Lapham is handling this one has us even more stoked, because let me tell you, if there’s one thing that NEEDS to be reprinted it’s Lapham’s epic ’90s crime comic series, STRAY BULLETS. Some of the most gritty, nihilistic modern-day noir you’d ever want to read. And, it was all before the big crime comics explosion of the mid-2000s. But, back to CROSSED.
If the first series of CROSSED was the ground-breaking moment, and the first burst of craziness, then this sequel is sure to be even more intense. Why? Well, lets be honest, you can’t follow up something like CROSSED and not be prepared to take it up a few notches. After having read the preview of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES, I am so stoked, it’s not even funny.
Now, some of you might be wondering… well, I haven’t read the first run of CROSSED yet, should I? Honestly, from what Lapham has said in interviews, this new story is a whole new cast of characters in a different corner of the CROSSED-Universe, meaning that it’s a fresh, new story. All you need to know is that the CROSSED are evil, sadistic maniacs infected by a disease that reduces them to their most sinister, and most sadistic desires. However, they are not zombies, in fact, they can still think, plot, and plan, just like humans, the only difference: they have no moral compass, they exist to destroy. So, imagine a zombie outbreak where the zombies could strategically position themselves, flood people out of their shelter, and then gun them down. Imagine jet planes being flown by zombies, and human bodies being dropped from them as live ammo. That’s CROSSED. The most insane, over-the-top survival horror comic you’re ever gonna read.
However, while CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES is a nice fresh jumping in spot… YOU HAVE GOTTA pick up the CROSSED trade paperback, and find out what all the fuss is about. Folks, this book was for real, one of the most sickeningly, gratuitously fun reads I’ve had in a while. Garth Ennis gave us nine chilling issues of survival horror, and I guarantee you: nothing you’ve read before stands up to CROSSED in terms of the whole “HOLY CRAP” factor.
Now, before you go and just assume I’m some nutjob who’s easily entertained by creative means of death and destruction, let me also say that the thing that made CROSSED so compelling was how well written the story was. I mean, it’s Ennis, and like he normally does, he shows why he’s the master of managing to blend the right amount of shock-your-system disgust with compelling character-driven story to make one heck of a good read. The fact that David Lapham is on board for this second one has got me also confident it’s going to be a good read, because as I had said before, Lapham’s work on Stray Bullets is some of the best comic stuff I’ve ever read. It’s really criminal there’s no trade paperbacks of that stuff in print. However, we feel that we’re gonna get to see some raw and nasty awesomeness from Mr. Lapham with this new CROSSED series.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25 KICKS OFF THE THANOS IMPERATIVE THIS WEDNESDAY! THE RETURN OF THANOS HAS BEGUN!

Who doesn’t love THANOS? I mean, many of you like, I’m sure, remember the epic sense of wow and wonder that the INFINITY GAUNTLET delivered, and while we thought it was awesome how the infamous titan went out in ANNIHILATION at the hands of DRAX THE DESTROYER, we knew he’d be back. Thanos is just too cool of a villain to put to rest for good, and now, this week, beginning in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25, the THANOS IMPERATIVE brings the Mad Titan center stage.
Now, why are we so pumped about this? Well, not only is it the big return of Thanos, but it’s also a Thanos story that’s being written by the incredible duo of Abnett and Lanning. These are the guys responsible for reminding me just how cool Marvel’s cosmic characters could be, and ever since their first kick-off with ANNIHILATION, they have turned the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe into something that is must-read material. Whether it’s the trippy events of REALM OF KINGS, or the consistently stellar storylines that have been running through Guardians of the Galaxy (one of Marvels most under-rated books) and Nova, Abnett and Lanning have really done a fantastic job of making the Marvel Cosmos a fun place to be. And, now, they’re being handed one of the coolest Marvel cosmic baddies ever, and we cannot wait to see their approach.
The prologue to the THANOS IMPERATIVE begins here, and all the questions of how he returned, and why he’s back are going to start being answered here in Guardians of the Galaxy #25. PLUS, just what does this all mean for the galaxy’s motley crew of universal protectors?
This one’s gonna be a great read, and we cannot wait to get our hands on it this Wednesday.

BRIAN WOOD KICKS OFF DV8: GODS AND MONSTERS #1 THIS WEDNESDAY! THE TALENTED WRITER OF “DEMO”, “NORTHLANDERS” and “DMZ” WRITES HIS DREAM STORY AND MAKES WILDSTORM COOL AGAIN. THINK BRIAN WOOD MEETS “LORD OF THE FLIES”

First off, folks, it comes as a surprise to us too that this is Brian Wood’s dream book, but, hey, the man writes some of the best comics on the stands, and after reading the advance of this first issue: IT’S FREAKIN’ AWESOME. First off, why are we surprised? Well, DV8 is a ’90s superhero book that’s set in the Wildstorm universe, and it hasn’t really been seen or heard of in a very long time. However, Wood apparently has been trying to write this story for years, and now he’s finally gotten his chance.
DV8: Gods and Monsters is an eight-issue mini-series with the killer art of Rebekah Isaacs, and serves as a brand new story for people who’ve never read a Wildstorm book before in their life. The book stars the DV8 characters who made their debut in the original series that Warren Ellis did during the mid-90s, which in my opinion, was ahead of it’s time in how it depicted the lives of warped, selfish, and ultra-violent super-powered adolescents who looked at saving the world as a close second place to their own selfish desires.
Wood’s approach looks to be much more in tune with the kind of work that’s really made him into a must-read creator, whether it be the high-octane action/political thrills of DMZ, or the introspective character-driven stories of DEMO, this series seems to bring together a perfect marriage of the two.
The story looks to be focusing on a team of super-powered 20-somethings who’re extremely dysfunctional, and maintain very messed-up relationships with one another. Wood decides to take these damaged, and sometimes purely unlikable characters and givet hem something incredible and epic to grapple with, and see how it changes them as individuals.
While I don’t want to drop spoilers on this one, I’ll give you a rundown of how things kick off.. the kids wake up to find themselves, literally falling from the sky into the middle of a prehistoric world. We kind of get the impression that the DV8 gang has been “on ice” for an unknown amount of time, and are now thrown into this situation. The real interesting dynamic is how eight brightly colored superhumans literally falling from the heavens affects a primitive society. And, that’s where the title comes from: Gods and Monsters.
All in all, folks, whether you’re a fan of cutting edge superhero stuff that kind of runs along the spirit of NO HERO, or SUPERGOD, or if you’re into the heady stuff that runs through DMZ, and DEMO, you should give this one a try. I think this may be up there as one of my favorites of the week, and it could really give the Wildstorm universe that much needed shot in the arm it’s been needing for quite some time.
As for whether or not you need any prior knowledge of the DV8 crew… no. This is a fresh story with a fresh start, and throws you right into the thick of things.

SIEGE: SPIDER-MAN ONE-SHOT – SPIDEY AND DARK AVENGER VENOM GO HEAD TO HEAD IN THE RUBBLE OF ASGARD!

Last week’s SIEGE one-shots really impressed the heck out of me. I really dug all three of them, especially the Captain America and the Loki. It’s so hard nowadays to tell during these big events which tie-ins are going to be a good read, and which aren’t, but I’m pretty happy to say that all three from last week were killer reads. I just sat down and read through the SIEGE: SPIDER-MAN coming out this Wednesday, and I’ll have to admit: this one is pretty damn cool too.
First off, don’t expect anything that’s over-the-top in terms of revelations or reveals. But, what you do get is probably one of the coolest, most solid one-off Spider-man stories I’ve seen in quite some time. The whole issue is pretty much a giant brawl between Spidey and the current incarnation of Venom, which we’ve all been waiting to see for quite some time. Does it deliver? Folks, does it ever. Sometimes you just want to see the good guys hit things, and Spidey does a whole lot of that. The writing’s solid, the art is good, and it helps flesh out the wallcrawler’s place in the grand scheme of things in regards to SIEGE.

STEPHEN KING’S AMERICAN VAMPIRE #2 FOLLOWS UP THE FIRST ISSUE OF THIS KILLER NEW VERTIGO SERIES! IF YOU HAVEN’T CHECKED THIS ONE OUT YET, YOU NEED TO!

Dude, I was totally impressed with the first issue of the new Vertigo series, AMERICAN VAMPIRE. I mean, first off, there’s the whole you know sense of awesomeness that you get from watching the FIRST, ORIGINAL COMIC WORK of the Master of the Macabre, Stephen King, unfold before your eyes. But, I’ve gotta tell you guys: co-writer Scott Snyder delivered big-time on this one as well. And, after our interview with Snyder about the future of AMERICAN VAMPIRE, I could not be more stoked to see where this story is going. American Vampire kind of channels the feel of hard-hitting, gritty dust and blood Vampire tales like NEAR DARK, and combines them with the old spooky mystique of classics like SALEM’S LOT. The artwork, and the writing on the first issue was sharp, with dialogue that you just pulled you in, strong characterization, and a very nice sense of pacing.
If you haven’t read AMERICAN VAMPIRE yet, here’s the scoop: The story of AMERICAN VAMPIRE seems to be centered around an Old West outlaw by the name of Skinner Sweet. In the first issue, we see two narratives that kind of wrap together, one set in the ’20s during the heyday of Hollywood, and the other telling us the origin story of America’s first Vampire, outlaw Skinner Sweet. From the vibe we got of the first issue, it looks like this series is going to explore not just the motivations of the O.G American bloodsucker, Skinner Sweet, but the whole lineage of Vampires in America. It’s a very cool read that manages to tell a very solid period piece without feeling old-fashioned, or dated. This one definitely lives up to the hype, and if you want a compelling horror story, or just a damn good vampire story… then you need to read this one. It’s fantastic.
This Wednesday, we’ll be seeing the release of AMERICAN VAMPIRE #2, and we’re pumped to see where the story of Pearl, Skinner, and the rest is heading. Heck, we’re only one issue into this thing, and I’m already planning to put it right near the top of my “To-Read” pile this week.
If you missed issue #1, no need to fear, we’ve got plenty in stock to get you caught up this Wednesday!

X-MEN SECOND COMING CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN X-MEN LEGACY #235 *X-MEN SECOND COMING PT 4*and X-FACTOR #204 *X-MEN SECOND COMING: REVELATIONS*

Another killer dose of the hottest X-MEN crossover since MESSIAH COMPLEX arrives this Wednesday in the pages of X-MEN: LEGACY #235. Man, how long has it been since the X-MEN were this cool? I couldn’t tell you, but, folks, this storyline has been killer. It’s really gotten back to the roots of the X-MEN, and gets better with each installment. The whole scoop on this one is Hope, the first and last mutant baby born since the events of M-DAY (check out HOUSE OF M trade paperback, and the DECIMATION trade paperbacks) has returned from the future with Cable, and wouldn’t you know? All the X-Men’s old human anti-mutant extremist villains have combined forces to exterminate Hope. So, Cameron Hodge, Bolliver Trask, Bastion, and so on and so forth are all out for blood.
This week, the action continues in X-MEN: SECOND COMING CHAPTER 4, where we see the X-MEN that’ve been on the trail of Hope and Cable have lost a team-mate, and their trail has gone cold. And, that’s where Rogue comes into the picture. When I was a youngin’ reading X-MEN, I loved Rogue’s character, but after about 15 years of Rogue/Gambit over-dose.. I got pretty sick of her. It looks like in this issue we’re gonna see her come back into her own as a strong, and interesting character, and I’ll admit: I’m pretty pumped about that.

X-FACTOR #204 *X-MEN SECOND COMING: REVELATIONS TIE-IN* BOLLIVER TRASK PUTS OUT THE HIT ON X-FACTOR!

Now, let it be said: X-FACTOR is one of the best X-Books you’re not reading. There’s just something so unique, and fresh about Peter David’s approach to these characters that has really turned this book into a sleeper hit here at Third Eye. And, this week, you may get a chance to sample that in the pages of X-FACTOR #204, which ties into X-MEN: SECOND COMING as one of the “Revelations” tie-ins. While this issue is not an actual chapter of the storyline, it does feature events that are taking place on the outskirts of what’s going on, and it looks like we’re going to see Bolivar Trask intent on one mission: Kill every member of X-FACTOR. How’s he plan to do that? He’s gonna hire the team and send ‘em into a surefire death-trap.

ARE YOU READING GRANT MORRISON’S JOE THE BARBARIAN? IF NOT, THEN REMEDY THAT THIS WEDNESDAY, AND CHECK OUT THIS FANTASTIC NEW SERIES! A TRUE URBAN FANTASY TALE THAT HAS US HOOKED HARD HERE AT THIRD EYE! JOE THE BARBARIAN #4 HITS THIS WEEK!

Grant Morrison’s limited series which takes a shy, diabetic teenager and throws him head first into a trippy realm where all of his action figures have come to life, and live within a world of their own making, has had us really hooked since it’s launch. While we felt the first issue was a little slow, it was when we got into issue #2 that we knew Morrison was onto something here. Each issue seems to be building towards a much larger picture than what we had assumed at the start of the series. In last month’s issue #3, we learned that there’s a real importance to this new world Joe’s stumbled upon, and had a very cool Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz, albeit slightly darker, feel to it.
In issue #4, it looks like the adventure quotient of the story is gonna be kicking up big time, as the mysteries of the Iron Kingdom and it’s relationship to Joe’s real world are finally revealed. And, it also looks like Joe’s going to get a new traveling companion thrown into the mix for the adventurer and his rat friend’s voyage into Ultimate Darkness.
Joe the Barbarian has been a stellar read since issue #1, and we highly recommend it. Sean Murphy’s art brings Morrison’s crazy, and tripy world to life in so many ways. And, I mean, there’s just a real “cool” factor about reading what is basically a high-adventure fantasy story that’s set in a mythical world composed of action figures, and toys. The fact that artist Sean Murphy seems to be deliberately keeping the look and feel of the toys as ’80s favorites, is very cool. When you see Optimus Prime or Snake-Eyes lurking in the background, or the Captain Picard-like character giving Joe a word of advice… it’s just very cool stuff.
If you’ve missed the prior 3 issues, don’t sweat it, we’ve got all three in stock, and it’s easy to get caught up.
PLUS, issue #1 is only a buck!

RADICAL COMICS’S HOTWIRE: REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD by WARREN ELLIS & STEVE PUGH AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY IN TRADE PAPERBACK! CYBERPUNK BLADE RUNNER MEETS GHOST BUSTERS AWESOMENESS COURTESY OF MR. WARREN ELLIS!

Here’s a trade paperback hitting this week that I’d call a sure-fire must read. Hotwire by Warren Ellis and Steve Pugh launched last year, and was one of the shining lights in up-and-coming publisher Radical’s line-up. The story centers around Detective Hotwire, who’s what people in this dystopian Blade Runner-ish future call a Detective Exorcist, and her plight to control the unruly spirits of the dead. Imagine this: ghosts are acknowledged and proven as scientific fact, and now there’s no room in the afterlife for them, so they roam the world, and it’s up to the authorities to make sure these spirits and poltergeists don’t interfere too much with everybody’s day to day.
And, this is where Alice Hotwire comes into play, she’s the best there is at reining in the “Blue Lights”, which’re what the dead are called as they roam mindlessly. However, now they’re being turned into weapons of mass destruction, and she’s the only person who can save the city from a total meltdown. This one played out like a very cool, cyberpunk kinda ghostbusters story, and we highly recommend it, especially if you’re an Ellis fan. And, Pugh’s artwork is INCREDIBLE.
In addition to the limited series, this trade paperback includes creator notes, character designs, and even some newly remastered tales from Alice Hotwire’s past, featuring some never-before-seen Warren Ellis stuff.

THE DOOMWAR CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY AS THE FANTASTIC FOUR JOIN THE FRAY IN DOOMWAR #3!

Amidst the Sieges, and the Second Comings, there’s a pretty killer little event that’s taking place in a more quiet corner of the Marvel Universe, and that’s the DOOMWAR. This one has a much more old-school (but in a good way), tons of good guys going head to head with one bad guy kinda vibe, and it’s really been a lot of fun.
Simply put, the Black Panther is on a mission to not just rescue Storm from Doom, but take Wakanda back from Doom, and he’s enlisted the forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and even Deadpool to help him do so. While it’s unclear whether the events of DOOMWAR are set before or after SECOND COMING/SIEGE (we’re assuming that it’s during SIEGE, but before SECOND COMING), the story has been pretty killer so far. And, really, it’s all because it’s one whole storyline focusing on Dr. freakin’ Doom! I mean, c’mon… we know we just went zany over Thanos, but we like Doom even more than Thanos when it comes to bad guys, and it’s great to finally see an event where he’s getting center-stage.
If you missed issues #1 or #2 of DOOMWAR, don’t worry, we still have plenty in stock to catch you up.

MAGDALENA #1 KICKS OFF A NEW TOP COW ONGOING SERIES FOR THIS LONG-TIME FAN-FAVORITE TOP COW CHARACTER! AND IT ACTUALLY LOOKS PRETTY GOOD.
Now, I have to be honest. I’ve never been a big TOP COW fan. I LOVED WANTED, and whatever KIRKMAN dishes out under the Pilot Season imprint, I’m all over. I even enjoyed the Cyberforce/Hunter Killer mini from last year, because Kenneth Rocafort’s awesome artwork. However, I’ve just never really been a big fan of many of TOP COW’s characters. Don’t get me wrong, I loved what Garth Ennis did on the early DARKNESS stuff, but you know, where the company went in later years, just wasn’t my thing.
However, I know a lot of people do dig TOP COW, and I really have an appreciation for some of the talented artists they’ve got working for ‘em, so it was with some curiosity that I decided to scope out the preview of the first issue of the new MAGDALENA ongoing series, and folks, it’s pretty damn cool. If you’re a TOP COW fan, you’re gonna love it, but even if you’re like me, and haven’t really dipped your toe in their “universe”-centric books in a while, you should give this one a peek. The preview reads like a very smooth, well-done vatican conspiracy kinda thing meets Assassin’s Creed action and espionage. And, I REALLY dig the artwork, but that’s really nothing new for TOP COW, because they always have some of the best artists working on their books.
All in all, I think that this one is worth giving a shot, especially if you’re into religious conspiracy stories, or kind of ultra-violent Tomb Raider-esque fun.
Plus, I have to admit, seeing that old logo on the top of the cover has gotten me nostalgic.

MARK MILLAR (KICK-ASS, NEMESIS, OLD MAN LOGAN) WRAPS UP HIS FIRST ARC OF ULTIMATE AVENGERS THIS WEDNESDAY IN ULTIMATE AVENGERS #6

You know, Mark Millar can do no wrong, in my opinion. The man just knows how to write one hell of an entertaining comic, and his current run on the ULTIMATES with ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS has been fantastic. He’s really kinda pulled the ULTIMATES up from where they’d fallen after the very disappointing ULTIMATES 3. His unique take, and twist on the world of the AVENGERS as seen through the guise of the Ultimate universe is fantastic, and this run, which has focused on the reveal of Steve Roger’s illegitimate son growing up to be the Ultimate Red Skull has had us on the edge of our seats the entire time.
This week, Millar wraps up the conclusion in typical epic Millar fashion, bringing us a huge showdown between Captain America and the Red Skull, and the Avengers need to get there from keeping these two from destroying the entire world in the process.
If you haven’t yet read ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS, but have been meaning to, we’ve got issues 1-5 well-stocked here at the shop, so it’s easy enough to get caught up. If you’re looking for a tight, self-contained, and well-told Avengers story with a definite edge to it (I mean, c’mon, this is being written by the guy who did KICK-ASS and OLD MAN LOGAN), then give ULTIMATE AVENGERS a shot.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING RISE OF THE ELDRAZI IN STOCK AT THIRD EYE THIS FRIDAY!

The third set in the Zendikar block, Rise of the Eldrazi will be in stock and available at Third Eye this Friday. We’ll have plenty of booster packs, sealed booster boxes, fat packs and intro packs available.
STRAIGHT FROM THE PAGES OF THOR, LADY SIF GETS HER OWN ONE-SHOT WITH SIF #1 THIS WEDNESDAY! PLUS.. BETA RAY BILL!? YES!

This one looks pretty kick-ass, but that might just be because I’ve really become a big Thor fan over the last few years. This one-shot gives us the tale of Sif, an Asgardian warrior who craved the blood of her enemies, and how she has not been the same since Loki possessed her body. This one-shot features Sif and Beta Ray Bill fighting their way forward as she tires to reclaim her former glory.
My thoughts? Looks pretty cool, the preview reads well, and while I’m not super familiar with the creative team, the art is killer. But, c’mon, Sif is a cool character, and it’s kinda neat to see her getting some spotlight. Plus, I think it’s cool they’re actually addressing the whole Loki taking over her body thing.

Here’s a cool one. This little slab of awesome, priced only at $5.99, collects the writings and ramblings of critically acclaimed author, WARREN ELLIS, as told through the robotic head of Jack Kirby. Ellis’s thoughts on the comics medium, creating comics, the future of comics, and their past, are all told here, and it’s very compelling stuff for anyone who is a fan of the man’s work. Give it a look this Wednesday, for some truly funny, yet insightful looks at how the comic industry operates.
STAFF PICKS
Steve - BRIGHTEST DAY #0 = An exciting start for DC’s next big progression of things. It’s got a very cool, ground zero feel to it, where you feel like you’re at the start of something very cool. The balance of major characters with minor is well done, and the writing and art were really sharp. Really excited for more now!
Trish – GEORGE R.R MARTIN’S FEVRE DREAM #1 = I’m not necessarily a big GEORGE R.R MARTIN fan but I really liked this new Avatar book. Bloody, and vicious, it’s got that kind of old school vampire charm to it.
Torma – FLASH #1 = The Flash is officially cool again. Thank you Geoff Johns!
Matt – KILL SHAKESPEARE #1 = I liked this one a lot. It had a real Stuff of Legend / Fables feel to it. The hook is perfect too, Shakespeare’s villainous characters brought to life and seeking to murder Shakespeare? Awesome.

ABSOLUTION by Christos Gage & Robert Viacova – courtesy of Avatar Press
“Dexter” meets “ROBOCOP” from the publishers of CROSSED & SUPERGOD

You know, in the course of the last few years, Avatar has become a mark of quality. And, often, in the thick of the high profile books they have coming out from the likes of Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis, sometimes books will get lost in the shuffle. Absolution is a book that I feel may have gotten lost in the shuffle last year, due to all the hit books that Avatar was releasing. And, that’s a shame, ’cause Absolution is freakin’ AWESOME.
When the #0 issue first came out, I was actually kind of lukewarm on the book. The concept didn’t really hook me right off the bat, and compared to some of the other fare coming out from Avatar at the time (CROSSED, NO HERO), that #0 issue didn’t really knock me over. But, I was wrong. See, the beauty of ABSOLUTION is it takes an issue or two to get going, but once it gets going, it delivers more adrenaline and awesomeness than most books that explore similar concepts.
Lets talk about the hook, first off, the series takes place in a world where super-human police forces have been instituted. Just like normal police officers, these superhuman officers are bound by a code of conduct and ethics. This means they can’t just run out there, and vaporize someone for their crimes. Just like a real officer has to arrest, and bring the criminal in to stand trial, so do they. And, that’s where things get interesting, as the main character of the story, Dusk, who’s superpower is sort of like a reverse of the Invisible Woman’s (in other words he can create matter from a murky, black substance, and use it to conceal himself, create forcefields, or use it offensively to.. well… decapitate a guy. :) ), ANYWAYS, at the start we see Dusk take down a rapist/murderer who ends up sickening him more than anyone he’s ever brought in before. And, when he accidentally lops off the guy’s arm in the process of apprehending him, he realizes that he’d rather let him bleed out than seal up the wound with one of his “duskfields.” And, he does. The guy dies, and Dusk realizes he’s gone down a path that he cannot retreat from.
So, begins John Dusk’s descent into dangerous territory as he kills more, and more bad guys. From this point forward, we’re taken into an ultraviolent world of superhumans, and a quickly blurring line between wrong and right. We watch what happens as Dusk takes actions into his own hands, and this is part of what makes the book stand apart. It makes the reader think. Sure, it’s violent, it’s full of harsh language, and nudity, but underneath it, there’s a very serious moral dilemma that fuels the entire series, and this is part of the appeal.
And, I’m holding back some of the best parts of ABSOLUTION, as I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises. Just trust me, this one’s worth the read.
We have limited quantities of the entire series still in stock, issues #0 to #6, make sure you grab em quick though, ’cause these are out of print, and are going to be difficult to keep in stock until the trade comes out this Fall.
PLUS, ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH & BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 4 ACTION FIGURES!

herefor the official Third Eye BRIGHTEST DAY Checklist BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 4 ACTION FIGURES AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

More importantly, it was the ground floor for Geoff Johns’s road to building the DC Universe into the exciting and interesting place it is now today. The ABSOLUTE collections are always gorgeous, and this one is no exception, a giant over-sized hardcover that collects the full GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH mini-series, the first issue of the Green Lantern ongoing series, the preview story from Wizard Magazine, and then a very cool one-shot story from GREEN LANTERN SECRET FILES 2005, which features the incredible artwork of DARWYN COOKE.

Lapham with this new CROSSED series.

hereto read a preview of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #1 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25 KICKS OFF THE THANOS IMPERATIVE THIS WEDNESDAY!
This one’s gonna be a great read, and we cannot wait to get our hands on it this Wednesday.

herefor a preview of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25 *THANOS IMPERATIVE PROLOGUE* BRIAN WOOD KICKS OFF DV8: GODS AND MONSTERS #1 THIS WEDNESDAY!

Click herefor a preview of X-MEN LEGACY #235 *X-MEN SECOND COMING PT 4*

WARREN ELLIS’S DO ANYTHING GRAPHIC NOVELLA ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY GIVING US THE RAMBLINGS OF ELLIS AS TOLD THROUGH A ROBOTIC JACK KIRBY HEAD. YES, WE’RE SERIOUS!

Awesome.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 11/25/09

It’s a big week for Blackest Night, folks, with two of the most anticipated titles attached to rings arriving this Wednesday. The first of which, of course, being BLACKEST NIGHT #5, and that comes with the free GREEN LANTERN ring. There’s really not a whole lot more we can say about Blackest Night that hasn’t been said. In fact, if you’re not yet reading BLACKEST NIGHT, then we highly recommend checking out the Blackest Night wikipedia entry by clicking here to read about how awesome it’s been. As for the new issue hitting this week.. all we can say is that Nekron, Lord of the Undead, is revealed, and his motives, and control over the Black Lanterns is explored.. and according to the solicits, this is supposed to be a huge turning point in the event!
For a quick Blackest Night in a nutshell description… basically, at the end of the SINESTRO CORPS WAR (a great storyline from BLACKEST NIGHT writer Geoff Johns which really kicked all of this off), it was realized that there are several different Lantern Corps, and each one represents a different color of the spectrum. Each color, of course, represents a different emotion. Red equals Rage, Indigo equals Compassion, ect. The big reveal though was that a prophecy was coming into realization, and that was the Blackest Night. The Black Lanterns. They represent DEATH, and basically, it’s brought us to here where black rings have resurrected nearly every dead DC Universe character you can think of as a vengeful, undead Black Lantern. Everyone from the Martian Manhunter to Dick Grayson’s parents, the Flying Graysons are back, and they’re out for blood. The Black Lanterns also have a knack for eating people’s hearts. :) If you’re interested in catching up on BLACKEST NIGHT, we currently have EVERYTHING well-stocked here at Third Eye, and we would recommend starting with GREEN LANTERN #43 *BLACKEST NIGHT PROLOGUE* and then jumping into BLACKEST NIGHT #1. Of course, if you want the back story, you can always go back and check out the Sinestro Corps War, and other following volumes now available in trade paperback. Click here to see a checklist for BLACKEST NIGHT.
Now, lets talk about JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #39, this is going to be a big tie-in issue, and we’re excited about it. First off, the new direction of JUSTICE LEAGUE, which began inJUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #38last month (still available here at Third Eye), kicked off with a bang! Great story from James Robinson (of Starman fame) and great art from Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-man, for like a billion years!). It’s actually been a very long time since I really got excited about the core Justice League ongoing series, and between the first issue of the new direction and then Robinson’s Cry for Justice, they’re getting me pumped for the JLA again. The new line-up is different, yet fresh, and the big reveal at the end of #38 with Black Lantern Dr. Light (you know, one of the most vile DCU villains thanks to Identity Crisis), was a great way to start things off. And, that brings us to this week with Justice League #39. This is the official BLACKEST NIGHT tie-in issue, and it features a very angry Black Lantern Dr. Light. Lets be honest, after what Meltzer did with the character in Identity Crisis, he’d already climbed the villain ladder, big time. Now, that he’s back as a Black Lantern, we can only imagine the villainy he has in store for the JLA. Ontop of all this, Justice League #39 comes with the Red Lantern Rage Corps ring.
But, wait, before we move ahead, we can’t neglect to mention the other big Blackest Night books this week, just because they’re not coming with rings. That would be plain unfair. First off, we’ve gotGREEN LANTERN #48, and with this series being penned by GEOFF JOHNS, the mastermind behind the Blackest Night, it’s almost as essential reading as the core Blackest Night book. In fact, if you read each issue of Green Lantern in between the issue of Blackest Night that proceeds and follows it, it fills in several gaps with the event. Basically, if you’re reading BLACKEST NIGHT, then you really should be reading GREEN LANTERN too, even if that’s the only other tie-in you’re following. In last month’s GL #47, we saw the emergence of the BLACK LANTERN elders, and they had a really cool, creepy Hellraiser-esque kind of thing going on. We also saw some unusual alliances between the different corps form, and now, in this month’s #48, it’s time to see this ticking timebomb explode.
Also, arriving this week is TEEN TITANS #77, a big Blackest Night tie-in itself. Whyat’s the big deal? Well, I’m not even the biggest old school Titans fan, but I can tell you right now that there’s A WHOLE LOTTA DEAD TITANS out there. And, now, a legion of undead Teen Titans have returned as Black Lanterns to totally decimate (and probably eat the hearts) of Teen Titan, old and new alike.
So far, the tie-ins for Blackest Night have all been fiercely on point, and the latest example of that was the Superman/Batman last week. What could’ve been just a fill-in issue, was actually pretty damn good. I was surprised!
After the fallout of the Blackest Night Titans limited series, we’re pretty excited to see what’s in store in this issue of Teen Titans.
CHEW TRADE PAPERBACK (collecting issues 1-5) AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY FOR ONLY $9.99 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* & CHEW #6 ALSO ARRIVES AS WELL! THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO JUMP ONTO ONE OF THE BEST NEW SERIES OF 2009! CANNIBAL COPS! POULTRY PROHIBITION!

What is Chew? Chew’s story is set in a world where all poultry has been made illegal, similar to the Prohibition era for Alcohol. The reason why? Bird Flu. Serious, deadly, bird flu. So, in this world, there’s speakeasies dedicated to serving turkey, chicken and so forth. In this world, resteraunts smuggle in real chicken instead of the substitute product that’s been forced on society. And, in this world, exists the series main character, Tony Chu. Tony Chu is cibopathic. It’s a rare condition where he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats. He eats a hamburger, he sees the cow being killed. He eats an apple, he can see the pesticides being sprayed on it. In fact, the only thing that Tony can eat without any bother, are beets. He doesn’t know why, but beets are the one thing he gets no reaction from. Well, the series kicks off with Tony dining with his partner (Tony’s a homicide detective) at a speak-easy serving chicken. He has the soup. And, then, he sees a lot of girls being killed and put into that soup. Tony senses the killer in the kitchen, chases him out, and the killer ends up taking his own life. To get the names of the victims, Tony gnaws on the killer. And, if you haven’t already seen where this is going… the series has kicked off, with Tony being recruited into the FDA (now as big a deal as the ATF is today), and being used for his unique talents. In other words, he’s gotta eat the remains of murder victims.
Sound cool? You bet it is. And, this Wednesday, the first trade collecting issues 1-5 arrives here at Third Eye, and guess what.. it’s only $10. So, if you’re looking for something to kill time in between Walking Dead trades, or maybe just something a little quirkier than usual. Give Chew a shot. It’s well-written, gorgeously illustrated and a great read.
And, lets not forget, Chew #6 *International Flavor pt 1* is also arriving this week. After the surprising last issue (which I don’t want to drop spoilers on, with the trade and all hitting this week), it looks like we got some cool stuff to look forward to in the new arc of Chew that begins this week. All we know is we’re going to see Tony Chu on the case, and he’s trying his damndest to solve this case old school before his boss decides to make him eat some of the most disgusting stuff imaginable to figure out just what is going on.

IMAGE UNITED #1 - THE ORIGINAL ’90s DREAM TEAM RETURNS IN THIS VERY SPECIAL LIMITED SERIES WRITTEN BY ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, HAUNT) & ILLUSTRATED BY TODD MCFARLANE, ERIK LARSEN, ROB LIEFELD, MARC SILVESTRI & MORE!

For those of you who followed comics heavily in the ’90s, like myself. Heck, that’s when I grew up reading comics! You have to admit the sheer nostalgia of this event is overwhelming. And, with the coverage it’s been getting in the mainstream press (USA TODAY, MTV, ect), you know that the Image guys have got some big plans for this thing. Honestly, there were a lot of good things, and a lot of bad things about Image Comics in the ’90s. I, personally, feel that the way the comic has reinvented itself since then in the 21st century has been top notch. However, I can’t deny that characters like Spawn, Wildcats, and yes, even the Savage Dragon, were big parts of my youth. And, with the modern day master, Robert Kirkman (you know, the guy responsible for things like WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE, as well as his latest hit HAUNT) writing this, I really feel it’s going to be something special.
What is Image United? Image United is a long in the works reunion of the Image Comics founders. These were the guys that redefined what comics could be in the ’90s, and were the first real pioneers (along with Dark Horse) of showing that there could be more than just two major comics publishers. It’s been a very long time since a lot of these guys worked on their original characters, and heck, even a long time since they’ve done new work, so it’s exciting to see them all coming back for this. This limited series is a, excuse me for being blunt, big ass story where all of the original Image founders are going to be illustrating their characters and their parts in the series. The story itself is being written by Robert Kirkman, and lets be honest, the Image guys could draw really good, but it’s exciting now to see their characters backed by a guy who can actually write pretty dang well. This is one of the first times I can think of where a series has had a roster of superstars each contributing to the artwork, in such a unique way. Now, the actual plot of the series? Well, Image is being cryptic, but it’s basically: the entire cast of the Image universe is combining forces to throw down with a gigantic threat that could wipe everything out. Now, normally, I’d say, this doesn’t really sound like much of a plot to back things up… BUT… this is Robert Kirkman we’re alking about, folks, and if one thing is for sure… the man can take a standard concept and turn it on it’s head. And, with a series this big, you can bet he’s going to be delivering the goods.

THE BOYS VOLUME 5 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY!

Since we opened our doors here at Third Eye, we’ve been preaching the awesomeness of THE BOYS by Preacher writer GARTH ENNIS. And, every time there’s a new volume of this series available in trade, we feel it’s cause for celebration. We know a lot of you guys read this already in the singles, but, there’s just as many of you who patiently (and agonizingly) await the next trade paperback to hit. And, folks, we wait too, because our OCD kicks in, and we really need to get the next volume of this series up on our shelf at home to keep the rest company.
This week, THE BOYS v.5: HEROGASM arrives, and gives you your next long-awaited slab of depraved superhero madness. This installment features THE BOYS thrown into the midst of their equivalent of big superhero crossover events. And, basically, they find out that these epic, cosmic battles are really just an excuse for the capes to disappear elsewhere and party hard. But, in the midst of all their decadent fun, the capes have darker motives, and with THE BOYS staking them out.. you know all hell is breaking loose. The dark secrets of the great American tragedy that happened because of the Seven and the Vought-American are fully revealed here.
What is the Boys? Imagine this, a world where superheroes were the next step of national defense. Independent contractors working for a private company known as the Vought-American corporation. Think of them as supercharged private mercenaries for hire. And, they’re all the archetypes you know so fondly… the Homelander is Superman.. A-Train’s the Flash, ect, ect. And, they’re all EXTREMELY corrupt. The absolute power of being a superhuman has turned them into the ultimate despicable beings. And, The Boys, they’re the government’s answer to this. A group of individuals who’s lives have been shattered by the Capes and Vought. A group of individuals motivated by their sheer hatred of the Capes. And, they work for the CIA, policing the Capes, making sure they don’t become too big for the U.S Government to control. The Boys is an INCREDIBLE series, and if you haven’t yet tried it, we highly recommend picking up the first trade paperback this week.
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #20 STARK DISASSEMBLED PT 1 – HUGE NEW STORY ARC BEGINS HERE! A PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT, AND A LITTLE TASTE OF WHAT’S TO COME IN MARVEL’S “SIEGE” EVENT!

Matt Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man has been, by far, one of the best and most consistent ongoing Marvel series around. I mean, first off, it’s had the same creative team since issue #1 with Fraction and Larocca on board. This means that the storylines are tight, they’re consistent, and the quality never dips, never falters. No fill-in artists, no filler issues, just one hell of a run. Secondly, this is the best take on Iron Man that I’ve seen in decades. The only thing I think that’s come close recently was the Extremis storyline from a few years ago that Warren Ellis did… and I think that this is STILL better than that.
And, all of this Iron Man love is coming from a guy who had never really been a huge Iron Man fan before. See, I grew up reading comics in the ’90s. Yeah, when Iron Man was like.. a kid that time-travelled to the future because he went evil, or some crap like that. It was awful. And, then they revamped it with Kurt Busiek and Patrick Zircher (or was it Sean Chen, I can’t remember), and it was pretty awesome, but you know, it never was my must-read. When the Iron Man movie came out, Marvel launched Invincible Iron Man, and I gotta say, I wasn’t expecting the series to be as good as it has been. I mean, I loved the movie, but I was still hesitant about Iron Man. He was hard for me to get into. Hard for me to follow. Well, all that vanished after finishing Matt Fraction’s first Invincible Iron Man arc (the Five Nightmares, available in trade paperback now). He manages to take and capture everything that is cool about Tony Stark. He does what the movie did. He plays up the technology without the book being a technology lovefest. He plays up the suave cool of Tony Stark without making him into an unlikeable jerk. And, best of all, he has charged this book with so much action, you’re left wondering when you’re going to get your breath. The artwork from Larocca just helps to increase the awesomeness of the series, and it meshes perfectly with Fraction’s story.
In fact, Invincible Iron Man is the best Iron Man stuff I’ve ever read, only surpassed by maybe the classic Micheline and Layton stories.
And, now, the perfect jumping on point is here with the newest issue, Invincible Iron Man #20. This is a great entry point to come aboard the series, as the last arc has ended, and things are really beginning to heat up. See, Iron Man plays a HUGE role in the upcoming Marvel event SIEGE (which is going to be incredible), and there’s all kinds of crazy rumors going around about a seriously deadly fate awaiting Tony Stark. However, we don’t think he’s going to get killed off. In fact, we know that.. but, whatever is going to go down, we know it’ll be something big, and it’s going to happen in Invincible Iron Man #25. So, now is the perfect opportunity to come aboard. The road to STARK: DISASSEMBLED begins here!

INCOGNITO TRADE PAPERBACK *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE! ONE OF OUR FAVORITE SERIES LAST YEAR! APOCALYPTIC PULP NOIR COURTESY OF CRIMINAL CREATIVE TEAM ED BRUBAKER & SEAN PHILLIPS

One of the best freaking comics I read last year was the original series, INCOGNITO, from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. I’d already been a fan of this pair due to their incredible crime noir series CRIMINAL, and their work on hidden gems like SLEEPER. When I heard they were going to be applying their unique blend of noir storytelling to the world of superheroes, I flipped out. And, then, when the series began, it was everything I hoped it would be. This, my friends, is one of the best stand alone graphic novels you can buy this year. Whether you want a hardboiled crime noir story, or a mature slant on the world of supervillains, this is it.
What is Incognito? Incognito is set in a world where larger than life pulp heroes and villains existed. Heroes and villains dating back to the ’30s, with names like Professor Zeppelin (who reminds you of Doc Savage), and Lazarus (think the Shadow), and then villains such as The Black Death. See, powers in this world, were all the result of a meteor that landed in the 1800s and turned an escaped convict ino the Black Death. In the years following World War II though, most of these villains, and heroes faded away, and were soon forgotten as urban legends and fiction.
Fast forward to the modern day, and we have former villain Zach Overkill, a henchman of the Black Death who now lives his life in Witness Protection. He’s miserable. He’s bored. He hates life as a normal person. He punches in every day, works his 9 to 5, and goes home. As time goes on, he falls into a spiral of self-destructive behavior, including drug use, and this cancels out the drugs that’re keeping his powers suppressed. Before he knows it, he’s out on the streets, and for the sheer thrill of it, he’s in costume, but this time acting as a vigilante… because he’s bored with life as a whole. It’s soon revealed that this rat is a live, and the Black Death and his henchmen are on his trail, in a very violent, brutal fashion.
And, I’ll stop there before I spoil the story. Incognito is a pulpy, noir story that takes a fascinating look at the world of adventurers, superheroes, and super villains. It’s a must read, I think, for anyone who just plain enjoys good comics. Whether you like more indie-oriented stuff, or if you like the more superhero-centric stuff… Incognito delivers on both fronts.
CRIMINAL THE SINNERS #2 - SPEAKING OF INCOGNITO, BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS’S NEXT ISSUE OF CRIMINAL ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND WE CAN’T WAIT!

As you can already tell from my write-up on Incognito, I am a huge fan of the creative team Brubaker & Phillips. These guys can do absolutely no wrong in my eyes. And, if you enjoyed Incognito, and haven’t yet read CRIMINAL, I can’t recommend it enough. This is THE best crime comic coming out now. In fact, I would put this right up there with classics like SIN CITY, STRAY BULLETS, and 100 BULLETS. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say that this series is BETTER than those. I know, I know, I love Sin City, and I love 100 Bullets, and I love Stray Bullets, but Criminal has proven to be the most consistent, and most enthralling crime comic I’ve ever read. It’s pure modern day noir at it’s finest, from the moody art of Sean Phillips, to the plotting and characterization of Ed Brubaker.
The current CRIMINAL (each story is a self-contained round of 3-6 issues, so the order in which you read the CRIMINAL arcs does not really matter) is the story of Tracy Lawless. A man who came to destroy a crime mob, and has ended up working as one of their best enforcers. Made men are turning up all over the city murdered, and since the crooks can’t go to the cops, they need to bring in their own special brand of justice. Tracy Lawless has been made the sherrif of the underworld, and it’s up to him to finish this out. The fascinating thing of this story is Tracy Lawless himself. He’s the perfect example of noir storytelling, and represents the kind of character that CRIMINAL is known for. A flawed, tragic individual who’s nobles intentions have led him into a life of despair, and self-loathing.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #613 *THE GAUNTLET PT 2* – THE GAUNTLET KICKED OFF WITH A BANG LAST WEEK, AND CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY! FIND OUT WHY THIS IS A SPIDEY BOOK YOU HAVE GOTTA READ!

Dude, the Gauntlet kicked off with a bang last week. I was very impressed. Before I go into detail, let me go over what THE GAUNTLET is to those of you who might not know. Basically, Marvel is bringing back all of Spidey’s classic Rogue’s Gallery, and they’re amping them up, big time. A deadlier Rhino, a deadlier Sandman, a deadlier Electro. And then, they’re going to be throwing each one of these guys against him, and really putting the webcrawler through some serious abuse until we get to the big unveiling of the brand new Sinister Six.
Now, last week in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612 *THE GAUNTLET PT 1*, we saw the return of Electro. A classic Spidey villain who never really got his due respect. In fact, the last time we saw Electro, if I remember right, was back during the beginning of New Avengers. Since then, Electro’s gone through some ups and downs. He’s had all of the money he’s secured from years of being, well, a plain ol’ bad dude, completely disappear in the economic meltdown of last year. And, now, Electro, who’s older, and who’s powers have become more erratic and harder to control, has found his calling. He’s directing his rage at the fat cat bankers who got the federal bailout. And, in doing so, he’s developed a bit of a following as kind of a anti-establishment, working man’s folk hero.
Of course, in Spidey’s eyes, Electro is still a bad guy, and I mean, hey, if he’s out there running thousands of watts of electricity through someone’s body until they’re a charred husk… I guess he still is. Anyways, when Spidey gets involved, we really start to see just how deadly the new Electro is going to be.
And, that brings us to this week’s issue, the second installment of THE GAUNTLET. In this issue, all we know is that Electro is turning to a highly unexpected ally to cure his condition and regain control of his powers. And, of course, we’ve got the little cliffhanger of last week’s issue where Spidey was…. well, I can’t spoil it for those of you who’ve yet to read the book.
Anyways, long story short.. Amazing Spider-man has quickly become a must-read again with only one chapter of the Gauntlet in. We’re excited to see where this whole thing will be heading.
DEADPOOL CLASSIC VOLUME 3 HITS THIS WEEK, DELIVERING MORE OF WHAT WE CALL THE BEST DEADPOOL RUN… EVER!

Another slab of Deadpool awesomeness arrives this week in the pages of DEADPOOL CLASSIC volume 3. The Deadpool Classics have been some of the best reprints of old Marvel material that I’ve seen. Now, granted, Deadpool Classic v.1 really doesn’t pick up until the end (which gives you the first issue of Joe Kelly’s run), but Deadpool Classic volume 2… all gold, man. See, Deadpool Classic is reprinting the incredible character-defining Joe Kelly & Ed McGuiness Deadpool run. Now, not only are these back issues impossible to find (trust me, one of the things I had to sell when selling my collection to raise money to open the shop was this run, and it makes me sick to see it worth a small fortune now), but these are also the issues that really defined Deadpool as the hilarious, over-the-top madman that you all know and love today. This is where the character really got his voice, and this entire run still stands the test of time today (kudos to Joe Kelly for that, it just goes to show how well the man can write).
Anyways, this Wednesday the third volume of Deadpool Classic will be hitting, and in it you can expect another giant slab of Deadpool awesomeness!
SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN #3 BRINGS US THE THIRD ISSUE IN THIS INCREDIBLE 21ST CENTURY RE-TELLING OF SUPERMAN’S ORIGIN FROM BLACKEST NIGHT WRITER GEOFF JOHNS!

Gotta tell you guys, ten years ago if you told me that one of my most anticipated books each month would feature the Big S, I’d have said you were full of it. Honestly, outside of stories like Superman Red Son, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, and the John Byrne revamp of the ’80s… Superman just never did it for me. And, then, Geoff Johns did his killer Action Comics run, and got me hooked. And then he left, and I was left with a void. Nothing could match what Johns had done on the book, and I was finding myself looking for more good Superman books. Well, thankfully, Superman Secret Origin came along.
This is a book that ANY self-respecting comics fan should be reading. This is a book that captures the essence of Superman, and re-tells everything about the character with a modern 21st century spin. In other words, this book is outstanding. See, a lot of people say they can’t get into Superman. He’s too powerful, and he’s too hard to relate to. And, I agree, when he’s not written right, he’s impossible to get into. But, Johns captures the thing that makes Superman work as a character. Superman’s biggest weakness is that he IS the most powerful being on Earth, yet he will never know what it’s like to fully be human, because of this. He knows that 100 years from now, he’ll be alive, and most of his friends, and loved ones won’t. And, he carries that burden. Just like being the last of his people.
Nowhere is this clearer than in Geoff Johns’s SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN. And, the series does a great job of retelling the Man of Steel’s story for a new generation. Modern twists are put on classic concepts. And, like you’d expect from a good Superman story, Johns pulls at your heart-strings big time at some points. Plus, Gary Frank’s artwork is so good that you almost don’t even notice it. What I’m saying is he tells the story so well that you almost forget you’re reading a book, you’re pulled in, and you can almost see Christopher Reeves there acting these stories out.
The third issue of SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN arrives this Wednesday, and if you haven’t yet hopped on, we still have issue #1 and issue #2 in stock.

POWERS RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH POWERS #1! A PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT TO THIS FANTASTIC CREATOR OWNED SERIES BY BENDIS & OEMING! READ ON TO FIND OUT WHY WE’RE SO BIG ON THIS SERIES!

POWERS IS BACK! MONTHLY! Now, for those of you who’ve read POWERS, then you already are well aware of what a great series this was (and is). Honestly, the only thing that derailed it was writer and creator Brian Michael Bendis got so busy being the 21st Century Stan Lee and pretty much heading up the Marvel Universe that he had to put Powers on hold. Which is a shame, because POWERS is probably one of our favorites of his.
Powers is basically a police drama with superpowers, long story short. The world of Powers is a dark, and violent one. The thing that makes the series such a great read though is it serves as the perfect platform for Bendis to do what he does best: write strong characters with great dialogue.
The series follows two detectives, Christian Walker and Deanna Pilgrim, who operate in a department that specializes in homicides involving superpowers. In the world of POWERS, superpowers are common, but not mundane. The real dynamic is that Walker himself was formerly a superhero before lost his abilities and joined the police force. This adds a whole nother interesting level of story and development to things. In this world, superpowers are odd, some cases, they’re even seen as a contagious disease that can be caught by interaction with the “infected.”
The best way I could describe Powers is: crime fiction/police drama meets VH1 Behind the Music for Superheroes. The series is just plain good, and definitely warrants checking out.

ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS #4 - MARK MILLAR (OLD MAN LOGAN, WANTED, KICK-ASS) & CARLOS PACHECO CONTINUE TO GIVE US THE BEST ULTIMATES STORY IN A LONG TIME!

Mark Millar and Carlos Pacheco’s revival of the Ultimates with ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS has been insanely good. I mean, you have to understand… ULTIMATES and ULTIMATES 2 remain some of my favorite Marvel comics of all time. And, in my opinion, Millar redefined who and what the Avengers were in the Marvel universe. So much so in fact that it’s the Ultimates world where we see the movies taking influence from. And, I know, Ultimates 3 was… a little lacking, to say the least. But, it’s all good now, because Millar’s back, and with four issues in already on the new Ultimates run… we can safely say that he’s kicking all kinds of ass.
What’s Up With Ultimate Comics Avengers? Okay, for me to explain the whole concept of the Ultimate universe is going to be a bit long-winded, but just picture it as a more streamlined, self-contained Marvel Universe. You can click here to read the wikipedia entry on it. Now, Ultimate Avengers.. is the Ultimate Universe equivalent of the Avengers. But in this world, the Avengers are more of a government-funded black ops team than they are a superteam, and they answer as much to Nick Fury as they do Captain America. Hawkeye is a hardened, professional killer. Tony Stark is the drunken playboy to the extreme. The Hulk is an uncontrollable monstrosity that eats people. And, Captain America, is one hell of a hardass. Now, in this current incarnation of the Ultimates, the story is revolving around the reveal that Captain America had an illegitimate son before going off to war, and that son grew up to be the Red Skull. And, now the Red Skull is back, and he’s out to make his father’s life a living hell. Imagine if your son grew up to be one of the most genocidal terrorists this nation’s ever seen, and well, that’s the Red Skull. And, in this world, he’s literally the Red Skull, as he carved his own face off with a kitchen knife.
Want to catch up on ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS? We currently have issues 1,2,3 all well stocked here at Third Eye, so if you’re intrigued, feel free to jump aboard. It’s still relatively early enough to get caught up, and trust us, we can’t begin to do this series justice. It’s non-stop, action-packed, high octane fun in the true Marvel vein.

THOR GIANT-SIZE FINALE CONCLUDES J.MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI’S INCREDIBLE RUN THIS WEDNESDAY AND SETS UP THINGS FOR “SIEGE” IN 2010

Thor is another one of those characters like Iron Man, that I think I had missed out on a lot of the great runs with. I mean, I grew up during Thunderstrike, you know? But, even before JMS did his take on Thor, I remember really first getting into the character with the late ’90s relaunch that John Romita JR did the art for. In fact, that run was so freaking cool, I’d recommend it to anyone. I still think that John Romita JR is one of the BEST Thor artists around. You can snag the Romita stuff nowadays in the THOR VISIONARIES: JOHN ROMITA JR tpb.
Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked… JMS has really done an incredible job of capturing the wonder and magic of Thor, and bringing it down to earth, so it’s grounded. There’s this awesome sense of balance, where the reader doesn’t feel disconnected from these characters (which is easy to do, because they’re Gods), but at the same time, experiences a real true sense of wonder when they come across things like the first sight of new Asgard.
Anyways, JMS’s modern classic of a run has come to it’s end, and this week we see the huge finale in the pages of THOR GIANT SIZE FINALE. Much like the OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE SPECIAL, this will conclude the run, and leave things fresh and open for the next creative team to pick up the reigns on.
There’s lots of plot threads to be tied up here, and lots of questions to be answered. What does Dr. Doom have in store for the Asgardians? How will Loki’s plans play out? And, who will be the King of Asgard? And, along with Invincible Iron Man 20, this book is supposed to lay some serious seeds for the events of the upcoming SIEGE event… could that shot of Asgard crashing on the promo posters be related?
We don’t know, but we’re stoked to find out this week!
UNCANNY X-MEN #517 *NATION X PT 2* THE RETURN OF MAGNETO CONTINUES IN THIS WEEK’S UNCANNY X-MEN!

Nation X got off to a strong start in the pages of UNCANNY X-MEN #516, with a surprising (yet probably a trap) attitude towards the X-MEN. Now, judging just from the first issue of Nation X (UXM 516), here’s my prediction… Cyclops is gonna go fully bad guy in this story arc. For real. For the better part of this decade, Marvel has developed Cyclops in a very dark direction. He’s taken the reigns of the X-Men, he’s authorized the X-Force (a team of mutants that are authorized to KILL), and much more. His actions in UXM 516 totally look like we might see Cyclops becoming Magneto’s next right hand man. But, we’ll see, you know?
Anyways, in this week’s issue, we get to see the X-Men dealing with the return of Magneto, and trying to figure out what his place in the grand scheme of things is. Not to mention, the aftermath of Utopia, and a herd of Predator Xs… we think it’s gonna rock.
If you missed UNCANNY X-MEN 516, don’t worry, we still have plenty in stock for you get caught up with.
