THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 2/17/10

KICK-ASS HARDCOVER by MARK MILLAR (OLD MAN LOGAN) & JOHN ROMITA JR ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! THE MUST-READ SERIES OF THE LAST TWO YEARS! READ IT BEFORE YOU SEE THE MOVIE!

YOU. MUST. READ. KICK. ASS!!! One of the most widely anticipated releases hitting the Third Eye racks this Wednesday is the KICK-ASS hardcover. Why? Cause this whole series friggin’ smoked from start to finish. It took a while to finish, but heck, that ending was worth it. Millar was in true form here, delivering some vile yet humorous dialogue, some horribly gory action, and some of the most clever comics storywriting we’ve seen. And, who can forget John Romita JR’s part in all this? His skill as a storyteller shined through here so well, that you got lost in every issue of KICK-ASS you read. Every broken bone, every knife in the gut, every bullet in the face… he makes the violence hammer you over the head, in a quick, machine-gun fire burst.

And, soon, in just a matter of months, you will be able to see KICK-ASS on the big screen, as this film went straight from the pages of the comic to the movie theater. So, now, before we just keep rambling on and on about why we think this series is so damn good, lets tell you WHAT it’s about, and WHY it’s good.

WHAT IS KICK-ASS? KICK-ASS is a story about a teenage comic book fan named Dave Lizewski. Disenfranchised with his everyday ordinary life, Dave decides to take his love of comic books to the next level, and embark on becoming a vigilante. And, from there, everything goes horribly wrong. Right from the start, he purchases a wetsuit from eBay, to fashion into his costume. His first night out, he tries to stop some teenagers from spraypainting a wall, and ends up getting brutally beat and hospitalized. Broken ribs, broken collar bone, he’s a mess.

Six months to a year later, and Dave is out of the hospital. He swears he’s done with the superhero game, and burns all of his comics, tossing out all of his “secret plans”, and more. And, then, weeks later, he feels that itch.. to go out, and try again. And, this time, things work out where he ends up an internet viral sensation known as KICK-ASS.

And from there, the story begins, carrying us into a world where REAL people disenfranchised with the way things are, have decided to put on costumes, and try to change it. The thing that makes this interesting though is most of the people acting as superheroes are psychologically damaged in some way. Whether it be the relationship between Hit-Girl and Big Daddy (which you learn more about in the later issues of the series), or the motivation of the Red Mist… it’s a world of people desperately trying to escape their day-to-day through the guise of “fighting the good fight.” Of course, a real, flesh and blood gangster gets involved in the picture, and that’s when the world of superhero role-play quickly turns into a bloody war across the city streets.

WHY WE LOVE KICK-ASS? The series is sharp as hell. The characterization of everyone from the main character, Dave Lizewski, to the psychotic Hit-Girl, is dead on. Each character’s dialogue is so believable for them, and their background, that it really helps to pull you into the story. And, the pacing, the pacing is perfect. The story never feels like it’s dragging, but at the same time, you’re given brief moments where the backgrounds of these characters you may have just met are explored and fleshed out.

And, of course, the pop culture references and the insane amount of violence. What can we say, folks? We love our ultraviolence here at Third Eye, and KICK-ASS has it every which way. Plus, being the big pop culturally obsessed kinda folks we are, Millar’s use of comic book and T.V references in the dialogue, and even some of the storytelling of the book is most appreciated.

At it’s heart, KICK-ASS is a modern-day everyman superhero story, that serves as a nice 21st Century spiritual successor to the classic Stan Lee/Steve Ditko Spider-man stuff. I know, I know, you’re like “Steve, how the hell do you connect those two?” Well, to me, both are stories about guys who do find themselves wielding a responsibility, even though it gets them their asses handed to them. And, both also tend to put on that suit just as much for the self-gratifying escapist need, as they do the need to “do the right thing.” Both are characters that could be anybody, and are written that way too.

I HEARD THERE’S A KICK-ASS MOVIE? Ontop of all of the above mentioned factoids, there is a KICK-ASS movie hitting this Spring, and it looks… well, KICK-ASS. The trailers for it look INSANE. And, Nick Cage actually looks like he’s got a good role for him, for once! At first we were skeptical about how the book would translate to film, but, after seeing the red-band trailer… we’re convinced it’s going to rock.

OKAY, OKAY.. I WANT IT! We’ll have plenty of the hardcover in stock this Wednesday, packs the eight issue series into one giant slab of awesomeness for only $24.99. This one is going to be a popular one this week, so if you’re really set on getting one, make sure you get in here this week, or drop us a line about holding you a copy.

BLACKEST NIGHT: GREEN LANTERN #51GREEN LANTERN CORPS #45 DELIVER A DOUBLE-DOSE OF BLACKEST NIGHT AWESOMENESS THIS WEDNESDAY!

It’s funny, but the quality and importance of the GREEN LANTERN title in the big scheme of BLACKEST NIGHT has become so important that I look forward to it almost as much as I do the core BLACKEST NIGHT series. Each issue of GREEN LANTERN fills in the gaps between BLACKEST NIGHT issues very nicely, and nothing proved that more than GREEN LANTERN #50 from a few weeks ago. If you’re only reading the core BLACKEST NIGHT title, and skipping GREEN LANTERN, you’re seriously missing out on a lot of cool stuff that Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke have been expanding on in the core series.

Anyways, last month’s issue of GL, issue #50 (still in stock here at Third Eye, in case you missed it!) picked up directly after the last page of BLACKEST NIGHT #6, with the deputized Lanterns throwing a beat-down on the Black Lantern. And, not only did we get to see Orange Lantern Luthor, Yellow Lantern Scarecrow, Star Sapphire Wonder Woman, and more, go to town, but we also got to witness the likes of Sinestro, Atrocitus, St. Walker, and more prepare to go to battle with the Black Lantern Spectre.

Of course, the Spectre being the embodiment of God’s wrath, and all that made things a little tough… and that’s where things really got interesting, with Hal Jordan re-inventing the Parallax entity back into his being, to reunite to take down the Spectre.

And, now, here we are GREEN LANTERN #51, and the question everyone has on the top of their mind is: How will they take down  the Spectre, but more importantly, what’s going to happen to Hal and this Parallax thing when all is said and done? I guess this is what we’ll find out this week in GREEN LANTERN #51.

Meanwhile in the pages of GREEN LANTERN CORPS, we’ve been seeing Guy Gardner as a RED LANTERN. And, what former Green Lantern would be more fitting to represent the Rage than the infamous hothead, Guy Gardner. Ever since the finale of GREEN LANTERN CORPS #42, Guy has officially flipped his lid. And, c’mon… the Red Lanterns are just plain cool. From the looks of the cover for this week’s GREEN LANTERN CORPS #45, it looks like Guy is going to be going head to head with his former comrades in the Green Lantern Corp as they try to bring him back from the dark side of the Red Lanterns.

BLACKEST NIGHT: BLACKEST NIGHT FLASH #3WRAPS UP GEOFF JOHN’S AWESOME INCLUSION OF THE FLASH AND HIS ROGUES INTO BLACKEST NIGHT!

If there’s one character besides Green Lantern that you can tell Geoff Johns (Blackest Night mastermind) was born to write it’s The Flash. In fact, before Johns relaunched the world of Green Lantern and brought it back to the top of everyone’s mind, he was belting out some killer Flash yarns on the regular ongoing series. It’s actually kind of funny, because in the late ’90s, The Flash had kind of registered on my radar as being a book that always tended to have a very strong creative team onboard, from Mark Waid’s run (which got me into the Flash) to those killer Morrison/Millar issues, but it was Geoff Johns who really helped me appreciate, understand, and feel a connection to the Flash, his supporting cast, and his villains.

And, this is why I feel that the Blackest Night Flash has shined as one of the better Blackest Night-related limited series. Johns has a real love for the character, and you can really feel how he manages to connect both FLASH: REBIRTH and BLACKEST NIGHT to the world of Flash. Johns is doing a fantastic job of tying the events of BLACKEST NIGHT FLASH with FLASH REBIRTH, in regards to Reverse Flash, and of course, his Black Lantern counterpart.

But, the best thing about the Blackest Night Flash so far has been the return of Johns’s focus on the Flash Rogues. These characters have always been some of my favorite in his Flash works, and they are really shining in this limited series. It’s pretty awesome to see Captain Cold and crew taking down the Black Lantern Rogues, not only because the Black Lantern Rogues are out to get them, but because they feel a responsibility to put them to rest.

Scott Kolins, who has worked with Johns before on some of his earlier Flash stuff, in addition to last year’s FINAL CRISIS ROGUES REVENGE, brings his trademark, hyper-kinetic artstyle to the book, and that just compliments the high energy tone of this mini.

Folks, if you’re a Flash fan, or just plain ol’ digging Blackest Night, and you’ve yet to try BLACKEST NIGHT FLASH, I can’t recommend it enough. We currently have plenty of issues 1, and 2 in stock, and issue #3 will be in this week.

From the looks of BLACKEST NIGHT FLASH #3, we’re going to possibly see some Nekron action going on here. And, I wonder if this will maybe touch on Barry’s transformation into a deputy BLUE LANTERN.

BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 3 ACTION FIGURES THIS WEDNESDAY! YOU KNOW YOU WANT YOUR LARFLEEZE! MINEMINEMINE

This Wednesday, the next fearsome foursome of Blackest Night action figures arrive from DC DIRECT! So far, we’ve been so impressed with the quality of the sculpts on the Blackest Night stuff, and this next wave looks just as killer as the previous two. This week, we’ve got LARFLEEZE, THE ORANGE LANTERN! BLACK LANTERN AQUAMAN! STAR SAPPHIRE! and ARISIA!

If you’re stoked on these, and want us to reserve you any of them, then feel free to drop us a line!

DARK AVENGERS #14 – THE SIEGE CONTINUES AS NORMAN OSBORN NEGOTIATES WITH THE SENTRY’S DARK SIDE!

Okay, Marvel has really knocked things up quite a few notches with their SIEGE event. So far, this has probably been the best event that they have done since CIVIL WAR, and is definitely living up to the hype they’ve given it. Surprisingly, the tie-in issues have all been very solid so far, but the best of the bunch thus far, was DARK AVENGERS #13 which revealed the origins and true nature of the Sentry.

Now, the Sentry has always been a character I’ve really disliked. I just couldn’t get into him, or the concept of his backstory. The REAL origin that they revealed in DARK AVENGERS #13 completely changed my opinion of the Sentry, and I feel that he has truly found his place now in the Marvel Universe as a top tier heavy-hitting bad guy.

Continuing the story of the Dark Avengers in regards to SIEGE, DARK AVENGERS #14 arrives this week and picks up right where DARK AVENGERS #14 left off. The way that it reads, it looks like it takes place directly before SIEGE #2, and it really is a good follow-up issue to the strong origin issue of the Sentry. I don’t want to give too much away, but this issue explores the Sentry’s new embracing of his dark side, and his complete submission to the Void side of his personality. And, of course, how Osborn deals with it. We also see how Osborn is slowly losing his own grip on his sanity, and is put into check by Victoria Hand.

Without giving away too much, this sets up what you already saw in regards to the Sentry’s actions in SIEGE #2, perfectly. It’s a very action-packed issue, that has some very cool character growth for Osborn, as well as an interesting look at what The Sentry’s goal is now that he has embraced his dark side.

THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL: DEVIL #1 – LEGENDARY ANIME/MANGA STUDIO MADHOUSE (TRIGUN, NINJA SCROLL, ect) DELIVER THEIR FIRST AMERICAN-STYLE COMIC WORK! SCI-FI VAMPIRE CRAZINESS!

Here’s one that caught my eye while doing the Previews orders last month. DEVIL is a brand new Dark Horse limited series where the powerhouse anime/manga studio behind NINJA SCROLL, and TRIGUN, are bringing their incredible and unique artwork to the world of American comics. Please note, this is not a manga, but a Western-style comic being illustrated by some of the most talented animators and artists from Japan. Of course, the killer artwork is what got my eye, but, then I read about the concept of the story, and this one sounds pretty damn killer. Let me tell you some more about it.

A virus has been unleashed on the planet, and is spreading quickly. It turns ordinary people into superhumans with a thirst for blood called “Devils”, while most of them “burn out” and die within days, or weeks, there’s a new strain that allows the “Devils” to survive. And, this poses as a threat to mankind, with them being replaced on the food chain by this new predatory breed of human.

The only ones left to stand in the way of humanity going the way of the dinosaur are a couple of detectives from the Tokyo Police department.

From what I’ve seen in preview pages, this one has some gorgeous art, and looks like a very cool cyber-punk-esque horror tale.

INCORRUPTIBLE #3 - BOOMS! RED HOT IRREDEEMABLE SPIN OFF CONTINUES TO ASK THE QUESTION: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE BAD GUY GOES GOOD?

One of the best new ones to come out here in 2010 has been Mark Waid’s companion book to IRREDEEMABLE, INCORRUPTIBLE. What’s awesome about this is that whether you’re reading IRREDEEMABLE or not, the book is still accessible, and easy to follow, so you really need no prior knowledge of the world of the Plutonian (Irredeemable) to enjoy it.

However, if you are reading Irredeemable, then you’re like me, and REALLY digging INCORRUPTIBLE. The world that Waid is building here is so compelling, and is turning into one of the best superhero universes I’ve seen. This story runs parallel to the events of IRREDEEMABLE, where one of The Plutonian’s arch-enemies, in the wake of the Plutonian’s turk to the dark side, has had a revelation that he needs to step up, and change his path of criminal behavior. Basically, it’s the flip side of IRREDEEMABLE.. what happens when the bad guy goes good?

And, so far, two issues in, it’s been great. Just as interesting, and compelling as Irredeemable, if not moreso. The characterization of the main character, Max Danger (formerly Max Damage) is dead on, and the somewhat creepy former relationship to his sidekick is slightly disturbing. The motivation of Max is very cool, and the way Waid is writing him so that he’s applying the same kind of thinking he’s lived with his entire life, but applying it to the flip side of what he’s always done.

It’s really an interesting take on the world of superheroes, and one that hasn’t been explored fully before. We’ve seen the hero fall, but it’s rare that we see the path to redemption being traveled by the bad guy. And, Max Danger was a very, very bad man, as we find out through glimpses at his past in Incorruptible.

Both IRREDEEMABLE, and INCORRUPTIBLE practically hum with fresh, post-modern superhero energy that manages to take the standard foundations of classic superhero storytelling and infuse it with a fresh breath of air.

We currently have both INCORRUPTIBLE #1, and #2 well-stocked here at Third Eye, in case you haven’t hopped onto the series yet, so if you need to catch up, we got you covered.

Click here for a preview of INCORRUPTIBLE #3

WHAT IS IRREDEEMABLE? You’re probably wondering after seeing the references to IRREDEEMABLE above just what the heck IRREDEEMABLE is. Well, for those of you who haven’t yet stepped foot into the exciting new superhero universe Waid’s been building, here’s the rundown.

Irredeemable is the story of the Plutonian, who is basically the equivalent of Superman in this world. Essentially, it’s WHAT IF SUPERMAN WENT EVIL? The series kicks off with the Plutonian hunting down and murdering his former team-mates (Imagine Superman systematically exterminating members of the Justice League, and their family one-by-one, and that’s pretty much the feel here), and the first story arc culminates in the Plutonian sinking Singapore just to prove a point! Much like INCORRUPTIBLE, the characterization of the Plutonian and his supporting cast is fascinating, and we learn more and more about the why of him snapping and turning to the dark side through well-placed flashbacks to past events. We see a man who has saved the world time and time again, and we see the times where he’s been taken for granted, betrayed, and otherwise crapped on by a world that he’s made vows to protect. All of these things culminate in one major event that finally sends him over the edge, and when you get to that point, it’s one of the best reveals in comics, in recent memory.

Want to check out IRREDEEMABLE? For only $9.99, you can grab the first trade paperback collecting issues 1-4, and then either hop on with issue #5 (which is only $.99 cents), or go straight to the second trade that collects issues 5-8. The series itself is currently at issue #10.

DOOMWAR #1 – DR. DOOM IS MORE POWERFUL THAN HE’S EVER BEEN BEFORE, AND OUT FOR BLOOD! AND HE’S GOING HEAD TO HEAD WITH THE BLACK PANTHER, THE UNCANNY X-MEN, and THE FANTASTIC FOUR.. PLUS… DEADPOOL’S THERE TOO?

Who doesn’t love Dr. Doom? One of the best Marvel villains of all-time, and over the course of the last couple of years, they’ve really re-established Doom as a major force in the Marvel Universe, as he should be. And, now, in DOOMWAR, a limited series beginning this week, we see the good Doctor getting the title billing he deserves.

See, for the last few years, Doom has been slowly plotting and manipulating events and people in the Marvel Universe. In the pages of books like Black Panther, we’ve seen Doom launch vicious sneak attacks against T’Challa, and manipulate key events so that the support of Wakanda would lean towards Doom. With Storm being held prisoner, T’Challa has decided the time is right to strike back at Doom, and get his revenge. Now, T’Challa has called in the aide of the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four to wage war against Doom and his forces. T’Challa has also paid for the services of one of the most unpredictable and dangerous men in the Marvel Universe: DEADPOOL.

Why Are We Stoked About It? It’s going to be a five-issue over-the-top brawl from start to finish, featuring one of our favorite Marvel baddies, Dr. Doom. It’s also got a roster of characters involved that is pretty impressive, with Black Panther, the X-Men, the FF, and Deadpool all being thrown into the mix. Also, from the preview pages we’ve seen, Scott Eaton’s art is seriously on point, and this one looks like a fantastic event where one of our favorite villains gets to shine.

WARREN ELLIS’S IGNITION CITY ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY IN TRADE PAPERBACK! GRITTY STEAMPUNK AWESOMENESS! DEADWOOD MEETS BUCK ROGERS MAYHEM!

Available in trade paperback this Wednesday, we’ve got one of Ellis’s coolest stories in ages. Ignition City was one of the best things we read last year, and we know that a lot of you guys have been waiting to scoop this one up when it hit trade, and now it’s finally here!

Ignition City delivered a great, pulpy steampunk/retropunk tale that Ellis has gone on record as describing as “Deadwood meets Buck Rogers”. Essentially, it’s a story set in a steampunk alternate history where World War II was interrupted by a Martian invasion. As a result, space travel became the norm, and the age of space heroes was born. Of course, in the wake of World War II’s ending, things have changed drastically. The world is now one where spaceships belch smoke, and it’s not uncommon to see a quickdraw raygun shoot-out in some dusty tavern.

The story itself focuses on a former space pilot, Mary Raven, as she ventures to Ignition City to recover her dead father’s possessions.  Once she’s there, she discovers the true nature of Ignition City, a dead island on the equator, where lawlessness runs rampant, and space heroes go to die. She finds that her father was murdered, and begins her quest to find out who did the deed in this World of Tomorrow rotting out from the inside. On Ignition City, broken down men who were once swashbuckling science heroes pass out drunk in the shells of their former ships. On Ignition City, rayguns burn holes in the torsos of card cheats. On Ignition City, the ugly face of the World of Science is revealed.

This, my friends, was a fantastic read, and we can’t recommend it enough.

Check it out this Wednesday here at Third Eye!

FALL OF THE HULKS CONTINUES THIS WEEK INHULK #20 and INCREDIBLE HULK #607! RED HULK vs. THE X-MEN! RED SHE-HULK vs. THE AVENGERS!

The monster epic FALL OF THE HULKS has been a big hit here at Third Eye, as it barrels forward to a conclusion that should reveal many things, including the identity of The Red Hulk and Red She-Hulk! So far, I’ve been really enjoying the FALL OF THE HULKS storyline. It’s got everything that I’ve loved about the current direction of the HULK title: big, over-the-top, beat’em up fun. larger than life Marvel characters making guest-appearances, and incredible artwork.

The concept is pretty simple: The Intelligencia, a gathering composed of Marvel’s mad scientists, old and new, ranging from obscurities like Egghead to heavyhitters like Dr. Doom, all working under the banner of The Leader, have combined their scientific know-how and demised a final solution to rid the world of all the different Hulks running around.

The storytelling has a nice edge to it, but definitely fills a niche in Marvel as having an old school late ’70s/early ’80s vibe fused with some modern day Marvel madness to keep it from feeling dated (I mean, c’mon… Red She-Hulk broke Green She-Hulk’s neck, for God’s sake!)

Coming down the pike this week, we’ve got two big FALL OF THE HULKS chapters in the pages of HULK #20, and INCREDIBLE HULK #607. In the pages of HULK #20, we get to see the Red Hulk going toe-to-toe with the X-Men, and, ontop of that, the Red Ghost and the Super Apes are up to some bad mojo regarding The Beast and Black Panther. Of course, this issue is being illustrated by the insanely talented ED MCGUINNESS. This guy is pretty much THE Hulk artist, and whenever he’s cranking out the book, you know you’re going to get BIG, because McGuinness does BIG very well.

Next up, is INCREDIBLE HULK #607, the next chapter in FALL OF THE HULKS, where it looks like we’re going to be seeing the Red She-Hulk going toe-to-toe with the Avengers (anyone noticing a theme here?). And, that’s when Banner and Son step in to save the day. Apparently, in this one, we get to see just where Banner stands, and what his true motives are now in the grand scheme of things. And, to be honest, I’m as excited about that as I am about finding out who Red Hulk is going to be. Ever since World War Hulk, I’ve been wondering just what Banner’s overall plan about things was.

Anyhow, folks, if you want some killer Marvel fun with bigger than life characters, lots of extremely brutal comic book brawls, and every Marvel character you could think of… all in gorgeous artwork by folks like Ed McGuinness and Paul Pelletier, then do yourselves a favor and check out FALL OF THE HULKS. One of the most fun mini-events we’ve been following here at Third Eye!

JOE THE BARBARIAN #2 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*FOLLOWS UP THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRANT MORRISON’S KILLER NEW VERTIGO SERIES! A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF STUFF OF LEGEND! IMAGINE FIGHTING ALONGSIDE YOUR OPTIMUS PRIME AND SNAKE-EYES ACTION FIGURESMISSED #1? STILL PLENTY IN STOCK!

Oh man, here’s one I’m so excited for it’s not even funny! Joe the Barbarian, I could tell from the first issue, is already going to become one of my favorite books. I mean, nevermind the fact that Grant Morrison is writing it, and he’s one of my favorite writers, or that Sean Murphy is showing us just how incredible his artwork can be, but dude.. it was a GOOD read. That’s what got me hooked!

This Wednesday, the second issue of Morrison’s Joe the Barbarian arrives, and picks up from the cliffhanger issue #1 left us on. If you’ve already read Joe #1, then you probably felt like I did after the first issue: AWESOME set-up, but c’mon.. lets get to it, I want more! And, this is why I can’t wait to read issue #2 this week. The first issue did a solid job of establishing the main character, and the world around him, but it wasn’t until those last three or four pages, that I was caught hook, line and sinker. For those of you who haven’t yet read JOE THE BARBARIAN #1 (and you should, it’s only a buck!), here’s a brief rundown on what the heck this book is all about!

WHAT IS JOE THE BARBARIAN? Joe the Barbarian is a 8 issue miniseries about a kid named Joe. Joe’s kind of a typical geeky kid, who hasn’t really gotten a fair shake in life. He lost his father in the Iraq War, and he’s got diabetes, not to mention the kids at school tend to give him a pretty hard time. Joe retreats to his world of drawing, and action figures, avoiding the harsh realities of his mother fighting to keep their house. He spends a lot of his time finding ways to escape the somewhat sour real world around him. The first issue, which admittedly, is a quick read that doesn’t really give you much to go on with the series other than that it’s going to be a wild, crazy trip, ends with Joe heading up to his bedroom, and waking up in a strange world surrounded by his action figures in the flesh. Characters ranging from Optimus Prime (okay, an Optimus Prime stand-in, licensing, I know, I know) to Batman to Darth Vader crowd around him, and from that point forward… we have no clue what’s going to happen next, but we know it’s going to be a wild ride.

Morrison injects his unique blend of well-paced, high concept storytelling with his knack for capturing a human feel in his dialogue and characterization. His story pops perfectly with the INCREDIBLE art of Sean Murphy, who is a real rising star newcomer, that I think is going to break out big on this book.

The story looks like it might have a feel similar to STUFF OF LEGEND (another fantastic book that we can’t recommend enough), but we feel that Morrison may have a different take on this one as he moves things forward.

All in all, JOE THE BARBARIAN is a definite Third Eye Must Buy series, and if you missed #1, pick it up for a buck here at Third Eye this week.

PUNISHER #14 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 4* – ONE OF THE FRESHEST, QUIRKIEST MARVEL COMICS ON THE STANDS! A PERSONAL FAVORITE, AND A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF BIZARRE, FUN COMICS!

All right, what started out as a guilty pleasure has become a full-fledged obsession here for me with FRANKENCASTLE. Dude, this is the illest, craziest comic I have read in quite some time. It’s definitely the freshest thing they’ve done with the Punisher in the 616 Marvel Universe, and while I’m trying not to get hung up on “What happens after this story ends? What’s gonna go down with the Punisher?”, I think it’s probably one of the best things I’m reading. Seriously.

First off, the artwork is fantastic. Tony Moore is the man, and he’s got such a unique, stylized technique to his art, that he just takes whatever book he’s on, and makes it into his own world. The coloring especially on this one really pops for me, and I’m pretty excited to hear we’re going to see some guest-art by a favorite legend of mine, Dan Brereton, in this week’s issue.

Secondly, Rick Remender has managed to take an idea that could’ve totally flopped, and been complete crap, and make it into something that is fresh, fun, and definitely on the trail-blazing fore-front of 21st Century Comic Awesomeness. His characterization of not just The Punisher, but the Legion of Monsters, is dead on, and has given these under-used characters more life than they’ve seen in years.

So, now you’re probably wondering why I’m so amped up on a storyline that sounds.. well, kind of goofy? Well, let me tell you about FRANKENCASTLE, and maybe you’ll get where I’m coming from on this one.

WHAT IS FRANKENCASTLE? The FRANKENCASTLE story arc takes place directly after the DARK REIGN LIST PUNISHER one-shot where Daken chopped the Punisher into pieces and dumped his remains in the sewers. His remains are then gathered by Man-Thing and the Morlocks that live below, and taken deep into the Morlock Tunnels where all of the Marvel Monsters have gone into hiding.

Why are the Marvel Monsters hiding? Well, they’re being hunted by a steampunk monster of a man in a giant clockwork suit, and an army of Cyber-Samurais. Folks. I can’t make this up. It’s too good. And, what do they want with The Punisher’s remains, you’re probably asking?

Well, they patch him together into this Frankenstein-looking monstrosity, and are hoping to receive his military strategy as an aide in saving their skins. Now, Castle, of course, is ticked they didn’t leave him dead. He’s an abomination now, and he knows it. He has to constantly keep taking these brain-glue pills to keep his synapses firing right, or else he finds himself reduced to a mindless, growling beast. As the story goes on, we see a Morlock.. in a Devo shirt.. bringing Castle his pills, and just helping him adjust to life amongst the Monsters. Castle, of course, is still not sold on his newfound existence or in helping these folks… and then the Cyborg Samurais raid the tunnels, and we see Castle cradling the body of said Morlock in his arms.. a smoking hole in his Devo shirt. And, then, from there, Castle decides it’s time to throw down.

I know it sounds weird, but this is the good kind of weird, folks. It’s got great art, great story, and probably the best take on the Legion of Monsters characters in a long time. And, they’re all here too… Morbius the Living Vampire, Werewolf by Night, the Living Mummy.. some baby Fin-Fang-Fooms.

If you want to try FRANKENCASTLE, we still have all of the chapters in stock, and you can get started by picking up PUNISHER #11 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 1*.

A DOUBLE-DOSE OF DEADPOOL THIS WEDNESDAY WITH DEADPOOL #19 *WHATEVER A SPIDER CAN PT 1*DEADPOOL MERC WITH A MOUTH #8..PLUS, A LADY DEADPOOL POSTER!

What’s better than ONE Deadpool book? How about TWO Deadpool books? Yup, this week we get a double-dose of the Merc With A Mouth, and hell, they even threw in a smoking cool poster of Lady Deadpool too.

First on the agenda, we’ve got DEADPOOL #19 which begins the new story arc pairing ol’ Wade Wilson with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man. Now, you know as well as I do that a dream team couldn’t be better made than these two. You’ve got two of the biggest smart-asses in the Marvel Universe coming head to head, and you know… it’s only going to end in a very horrible, horrible… yet hilarious way. We can only assume that Deadpool’s taken his whole “finding himself” thing to the streets of New York, where he figures maybe.. just maybe, he could be a good stand-in for the wallcrawler..

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #42 – JAMES ROBINSON’S KILLER NEW DIRECTION ON THE JLA CONTINUES AS DICK GRAYSON JOINS THE TEAM!

I don’t know about you guys, but I really enjoyed last month’s JLA #41, where the new direction of the JLA began, and the new team was revealed. I thought that the storytelling was sharp, and there was enough of a balance between the characters we all know and love, and then the lesser known characters that you need in the mix, to keep things interesting. I also really dug Bagely’s pencils on the book, and feel that he really shines as a team-book artist.

This week, Robinson continues his new direction for the League (which is essentially the Titans grown up, with a mix of some heavy-hitters like Green Arrow, and Green Lantern), as we find out whether or not Dick Grayson will accept the invitation to join the team (aw c’mon, we all know he’s going to). Plus, it looks like Dr. Impossible (remember the guy that Brad Meltzer made cool on his relaunch of JLA a few years back?)

All in all, the new JLA looks to be a solid team book, and we’re excited to see what the second issue of the official new direction holds.

ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS: AVENTURE #1 DELIVERS… ZOMBIES ROBOT SMACKDOWN MADNESS!

What more can be said then.. Zombies vs. Robots. I mean, c’mon.. what more could you want? Seriously though, I’m intrigued by this one. I mean, imagine this… the world is now over-run by zombies, the human race is pretty much extinct, and there’s a handful of robots left fighting off the zombie hordes, and trying to restore the human race.

And, you know.. zombies do need brains, so what the heck are they going to do when they try to sink those teethers into a metal robot skull? Well, it’s not going to be pretty.

Each issue is made up of three stories that continue in each issue. The first story is Kampf, which is the big war story, set in the early days of the Zombie/Robot War, where you’ve got humans and robots fighting alongside each other to squash the zombie menace. The second story is Masques, which focuses on how scientists have tried to build this giant metal suit to go through some sort of time-travel gateway.. and of course, it fails miserably, and then some maintenance guy finds the suit and uses it to kind of half-assedly fight zombies. And, then the third of the stories in each issue is Zuvembies, which is follows a small group of survivors in Haiti, as they try to use voodoo and magic to form their own resistance against the zombies.

All in all, this one sounds like a lotta fun, and I’m pretty interested to read the first one this Wednesday and see how it is.

STAFF PICKS

Steve – Mesmo Delivery = Dude, awesome art, awesome story, violent as hell, and it’s caused me to coin a new term: Truckstop Noir. Seriously, if you took Johnny Cash’s darkest ballads, a couple of Pogues bar-room romps, Steve Ditko, Paul Pope, and Geoff Darrow and mixed them all together in a tumbler of Jack Daniels.. you’d get MESMO DELIVERY. Pick this one up, for sure!

Trish – Choker #1 = I LOOOOOOVE Ben Templesmith’s art, and this book is a perfect fit. Kind of reminds me of Ed Brubaker’s CRIMINAL meets Men in Black. Weird crime noir mixed with mutants and aliens.

Torma – NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E ULTIMATE COLLECTION= one of my favorite all-time comics. it’s like you took every obscure Marvel character and ran them through a blender with ’80s Arcade games, and Warren Ellis’s twisted brain.

Matt – Haunt #5 = Robert Kirkman continues to make this one of the best comics coming out monthly. Super bloody, but well-written all the way through.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 1/27/10

GREEN LANTERN #50 *BLACKEST NIGHT* HAL JORDAN vs. the BLACK LANTERN SPECTRE! ATROCITUS RISES TO POWER! ALL THE COLOR SPECTRUMS UNITE! SPECIAL DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE!

The biggest issue of GREEN LANTERN yet is hitting the stands this week with the double-sized 50th issue of the series penned by Geoff Johns, and illustrated by Doug Mahnke. All I can say, folks, is that this one is going to be EPIC. The solicitations aren’t revealing much, but from where we’ve seen the story going in both Green Lantern and Blackest Night, it looks like some big stuff will be going down in this issue. Plus, it’s an issue 50, and you know with hallmark books like GL, they pull out all stops for the 50th issue. Ontop of all that, each and every issue of GREEN LANTERN has served as a very special in-between story, filling in the gaps between issues of Blackest Night. After the events of BLACKEST NIGHT #6, I think you guys are just as eager as I am to see what’s going to be going down in this one.

From what the solicits do say, it looks like Hal Jordan will be going head to head with the Black Lantern Spectre, who you know, as the friggin’ spirit of God’s wrath, is pretty unbeatable already. As a Black Lantern? He’s going to be impossible. How is Hal going to tackle this, and what does the cover of GL tease with him done up in some VERY familiar looking armor mean? Is Hal going back to the way of Parallax? There’s also some mention of Atrocitus finding new means of power that will make him the most powerful of the Lanterns. All I know is that this issue is going to be packing some big punches, and we cannot wait to see what they are.

Each, and every issue of Green Lantern has been building on the Blackest Night story in a very substantial and meaningful way, and if you’re reading the main series, then you really need to be checking out the Green Lantern issues as well. They basically serve as Blackest Night 1.5, Blackest Night 2.5, Blackest Night 3.5, ect ect… very cool way of keeping things going, and expanding on important things in the storyline and keeping key elements from being glossed over in the main book.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 BEGINS “IN BLACKEST KNIGHT”… Does Black Hand really have Bruce Wayne’s skull? The road to this spring’s “Return of Bruce Wayne” storyline begins here!

And, as if DC wasn’t already dishing out one huge, monumental issue wasn’t enough, we’re also getting the start of what will probably be the biggest story arc yet in Grant Morrison’s red hot Batman & Robin series. Ever since the very beginning of BLACKEST NIGHT, everyone has been wondering just what the hell is up with that skull Blackhand has been carrying around and claiming as Bruce Wayne’s. And, then after the events of BLACKEST NIGHT #5 where Batman was momentarily resurrected as a Black Lantern, and then put back to rest… we’ve all been puzzled as to just what the deal is. Well, now, these questions are beginning to be answered in this very special three-part story arc that begins in this week’s BATMAN AND ROBIN #7, and it could only be titled none other than “In Blackest Knight.”

While Morrison has said that his series would not be carrying the banner of Blackest Night, because he does enjoy keeping everything contained to the pages of just BATMAN AND ROBIN, he has said that it takes influence and plot-threads from the atmosphere of Blackest Night. The biggest one being: Where does the supposedly-deceased (or lost in time) Bruce Wayne exist in this environment? The book is also going to be featuring every prominent current Bat-character you can think of, ranging from big characters like Batwoman to obscure favorites like Knight and Squire (the English equivalents of Batman).

Why we’re stoked? Well, as if we haven’t given you reason enough already as to why we’re pumped, with all the mention above about what it’s all about.. this is simply put going to be one of the best story arcs in one of the best Batman runs we’ve ever seen. I mean, Batman and Robin already exists as one of the major top tier favorites here at Third Eye, and each issue is guaranteed, quality reading, but from the way Morrison has described this “In Blackest Knight” storyline… we feel that this could be a nice slice of Bat-history unfolding right before our eyes. AND, ontop of all that, it leads into the increasingly anticipated “Return of Bruce Wayne – Fight Through Time” storyline that will be launching this Spring. Add in the involement of Black Hand, and the atmosphere of Blackest Night, plus the teased reveal of what’s going on with Batman’s skull in Black Hand’s grasp.

Knight and Squire? Another reason why I’m stoked about this arc is the involvement of Knight and Squire, the UK equivalent of Batman and Robin. These characters originally appeared way back in the Silver Age, and Morrison first brought them back in his classic run of JLA back in the ’90s (JLA #26, collected now in JLA v.5: JUSTICE FOR ALL) and given more showtime as members of the Ultramarine Corps in Grant Morrison and Ed McGuinness’s often overlooked, but killer JLA: Ultramarine Corps (available now in trade paperback at Third Eye) story arc. Most of you might remember them from the recent BLACK GLOVE storyline (BATMAN: THE BLACK GLOVE TPB). Out of all the members of the “International League of Batmen”, Knight and Squire are my personal favorites, and their involvement in recent happenings throughout the DCU has been very cool to see.

Knight, an “English Batman” who can’t handle the death of his father, and blows his inheritance on booze, drugs, and women, and ends up being dragged out of his self-destructive spiral by a tough, working class girl, is very intriguing. It’s a really cool dynamic to see between the two, and there’s definitely an Avengers (the Emma Peel AVENGERS) and even a little bit of a Doctor Who vibe to the dynamic between Knight and Squire, and it really makes them stand out as some of my favorite supporting DCU characters now.

All in all, this is a must-read story arc, and even if you’ve yet to jump onboard with Morrison’s awesome Batman and Robin series, we highly recommend jumping in with issue #7, and checking out this arc.

If you’ve yet to check out Morrison’s incredible re-invention of the Batman and Robin dynamic with BATMAN AND ROBIN, we currently have all issues, 1-6, in stock now at Third Eye, for you to catch up with.

THE SIEGE CONTINUES IN NEW AVENGERS #61 *SIEGE*,and AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #32 *SIEGE* STEVE ROGERS RETURNS TO THE AVENGERS THIS WEEK!

I gotta say, I am super impressed so far with the SIEGE tie-ins that have hit. Each one so far has done a fantastic job of not just being relevant to the overall SIEGE storyline, but truly making the books and characters they’ve spotlighted feel important, and integral to the overall scheme of things in SIEGE. Granted, there’s only been a couple to hit the racks so far, but each one has delivered big time. Way better than past tie-ins to Marvel major events.

And, before I go forward in talking about this week’s round of SIEGE awesomeness, let me tell you… check out last week’s DARK AVENGERS #13 *SIEGE* and DARK WOLVERINE #82 *SIEGE*, both of these were very pleasant surprises. Dark Avengers #13 took a character I’ve had nearly zero interest in, the Sentry, and revealed the REAL origin of the character and how he fits into the scheme of things with SIEGE and Norman Osborn, and by doing so… they have made me dig the Sentry a hundred times more than I did before. I don’t want to spoil anything, because I know some of you have yet to read this one, but, the origin Bendis has laid out for the Sentry gives him potential to become one of the coolest flawed characters, or over-the-top supervillain. There’s just so many layers to the character, and his whiny, obnoxious demeanor now makes complete sense. As for DARK WOLVERINE #82, the character of Daken also became a thousand times more interesting for me as well. Again, a character that just never clicked with me, I found myself digging Daken a little bit more with his inclusion on the DARK AVENGERS, but, after seeing those last three pages of DARK WOLVERINE #82… he’s much cooler now in my eyes. Now, what happened in those pages, is a HUGE spoiler, and I don’t want to drop it, because it’s a good payoff. But, dude, they really knocked things up a notch with Daken, his place in the Marvel U, and his place in Norman Osborn’s world.. you will be surprised!

Now, lets talk about the books coming out this week that carry the SIEGE banner.
NEW AVENGERS #61 *SIEGE*
First off, we’ve got the next installment of NEW AVENGERS (a consistent Marvel favorite around here), with NEW AVENGERS #61. Again, Marvel reveals very little in the solicits for this issue, but just like with last week’s DARK AVENGERS, and DARK WOLVERINE, we’re expecting some pretty big surprises. What we do know is that this issue features a newly returned Steve Rogers Captain America and his reunion with the AVENGERS. Who does he trust? Who does he count amongst his closest allies in this grave new world? It’s time to see how Marvel’s greatest hero kicks some ass in the face of the God-Killer, Norman Osborn. Click here for a preview of NEW AVENGERS #61

AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #32 *SIEGE*

The issue preceding this, AVENGERS INITIATIVE *SIEGE PRELUDE* surprised the hell outta me! I haven’t really followed the Initiative book that closely for a few months, because honestly, I just wasn’t digging it. However, the SIEGE tie-in, and the inclusion of one of my favorite B-listers, TASKMASTER, piqued my curiousity as well. Man, was I impressed! It was a very cool look at how the “average” supervillain views their place in the world, and portrayed Taskmaster as your everyman supervillain who just wants to make some cash, and meet beautiful women… and now he’s been roped into Osborn’s Cabal of heavy-hitters, and is getting charred to a crisp by the likes of Dr. Doom!

This SIEGE tie-in that takes place this week in AVENGERS THE INITIATIVE #32 sees Tasksmaster, and many other supervillains just like him being thrown up against the combined forces of THOR, and the immortal Gods of Asgard. This is a little more than they had bargained for when they thought serving as Osborn’s second wave of super-powered goons was a sweet gig.It should be a pretty cool issue, and if the characterization and writing in issue #31 was any indication, it’ll be a really well-written, well-shaped issue. GEOFF JOHNS WRITES “BACK FROM THE DEAD” BLACKEST NIGHT ONE-SHOT ATOM & HAWKMAN #46 THIS WEEK, AND IT LOOKS KILLER!  INDIGO LANTERN ATOM vs. BLACK LANTERN HAWKMAN AND HAWKGIRL!

The “Back from the Dead” one-shots that’ve been carrying the story forward in BLACKEST NIGHT this month have been pretty cool. There’s been a couple where I’ve questioned their involvement, but overall, there’s been some really good reads to come out of these. My favorites so far? Starman, of course, Power of Shazam, and the Suicide Squad/Sinister Six arc.

But, the big one is this week’s ATOM AND HAWKMAN #46, and it’s got us stoked for more than just one reason. First off, it’s being written by GEOFF JOHNS, the man behind BLACKEST NIGHT and GREEN LANTERN. And, then, it’s got an up and coming artist by the name of Ryan Sook rocking the art duties. If you haven’t seen Sook’s pencils, you should look him up, he’s actually pretty good, and I’m hoping that this is the book that gives him some exposure.

But, most importantly, it’s Geoff Johns exploring the fates of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who we saw killed in the pages of BLACKEST NIGHT #1. It’s no secret that Johns has a soft-spot for these characters, as one of his earliest DC works was the killer Hawkman run he and Rags Morales did. It’s going to be very cool to see where he takes things with this one-shot, and the spin that he puts on two characters who have a huge part of their backstory based around the whole death and resurrection concept.

Ontop of all that, it features the Atom, who is now part of the INDIGO TRIBE, who’s being hunted by Black Lantern Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Personally, after the big events of BLACKEST NIGHT #6, I’m anxious to see all the different characters who were given rings, and while I’m a little more jazzed on Scarecrow as a Yellow Lantern and Lex Luthor as an Orange Lantern, it’s still pretty damn cool to see the results of Atom being inducted into the Indigo Tribe explored.

Have you been following all the Blackest Night “Back from the Dead” one-shots? Each one is the next issue after the “final” issues of many series that were cut down in their prime, giving these books one more chance to tell their stories, and casting the Blackest Night shadow on every corner of the DCU.

In case you’ve missed any of them, we currently have all of the “Back from the Dead” Blackest Night checklists in stock, here’s a list of what’s been released:
The Power of Shazam! #48 by Eric Wallace
- The Question #37 by Greg Rucka
- Suicide Squad #67 by John Ostrander and Gail Simone
- Phantom Stranger #42 by Peter Tomasi
- Catwoman #83 by Fabian Nicieza
- The Atom and Hawkman #46 by Geoff Johns
- Weird Western Tales #71 by Dan DiDio
- Starman #81 by James Robinson

KICK-ASS #8 CONCLUDES MARK MILLAR (WRITER OF OLD MAN LOGAN) AND JOHN ROMITA JR’S ULTRAVIOLENT, YET HUMOROUS TAKE ON THE WORLD OF COSTUMED VIGILANTES!

The finale to Mark Millar and John Romita JR’s ultra-violent, yet humorous real-world take on costumed vigilantes arrives this Wednesday, after much delay. And, even though it’s been almost five months since issue #7… we couldn’t be more stoked. And, of course, there’s the little fact that the trailers have been showing up everywhere for KICK-ASS these days, and they look… AWESOME.

For those of you who’ve been following KICK-ASS, then the series needs no explanation. For those of you who haven’t, we’d recommend waiting, because the graphic novel will be hitting in a week or so, and the early issues of this series have been out of print and impossible to get a hold of since last summer.

What’s the scoop on Kick-Ass? Meet Dave Lizewski, an ordinary high school student who loves comic books. He loves ‘em so much he uses them as inspiration to become a costumed crime-fighter. After buying a wetsuit on eBay, and turning that into his superhero costume, he goes out, and ends up getting his ass kicked. Like, really bad. So bad, they put him in the hospital, and it takes him months to recover. He gets out of the hospital, swears off the idea of fighting the good fight, burns all of his comics, but…. something just won’t let him give it up. He goes out, one more time, in costume, and sees a guy getting beaten by a few guys. He tries to interfere, and they blow him off… so he pulls out his batons, and starts wailing on these guys from behind. And, every single person witnessing this begins to record it on their phones. And, an internet celebrity sensation is born, as the video is uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, and so forth. He’s dubbed KICK-ASS by the world, and uses his newfound confidence to continue his crime-fighting career. Of course, his second time out.. he ends up getting into a bigger mess, and that’s when Hit Girl comes into the picture. A 10 year old girl slicing dudes apart with Katana swords. And, that’s when we find out there’s more than just one costumed amateur crimefighter out there taking out bad guys.

The book is violent, and is fueled by a frenetic energy that makes each issue a fun, breakneck fast read. Mark Millar (OLD MAN LOGAN) demonstrates his knack for dialogue well, and the book is by far one of the most clever we saw last year. For those of you who’re already hooked, we know you’re gonna be eagerly awaiting this one, and for those of you who’ve yet to jump onboard, the graphic novel should be arriving next week.

CHEW #8 *INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR PT 3*CONTINUES THE BREAKOUT IMAGE SERIES OF 2009! ARE YOU READING THIS INCREDIBLE TAKE ON DETECTIVE PROCEDURALS MIXED WITH A LITTLE CANNIBALISM? IF NOT, GET CAUGHT UP THIS WEEK WITH CHEW VOLUME 1 TPB (1-5) FOR ONLY $9.99! THIRD EYE SPECIAL OFFER: TRY CHEW v.1 THIS WEEK, AND IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, BRING IT BACK FOR A FULL REFUND!

The second story arc of IMAGE’s best new series of 2009 continues this Wednesday, as we see Detective Chu tracking down a prize-winning fighting bird. One that’s impossible to defeat, and now that it’s missing, there’s some people who want Poyo (the feathered ass-kicker) back, and Detective Chu’s on the case. How does this tie in to the case Chu’s been working? I guess we’ll find out!

Click here for a preview of CHEW #8!

For those of you who haven’t yet tried CHEW, you have gotta check this series out. Even if you’re not normally a fan of the more off-the-wall books, you will be hooked on this one. It really is a great read, and combines killer art, and killer story to make for a compelling series.

What’s the scoop on CHEW? In a world where all poultry is illegal due to the outtbreak of Bird Flu, and an underground market has developed for the real thing, Detective Tony Chu exists. Chu, though, happens to be cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. He eats a hamburger? He sees the cow being killed. He eats an apple? He can smell the pesticides being sprayed on the trees. It makes his life very unpleasant, and because of that, he only eats beets. You can’t get a strong psychic residue from dirt. And, then, in the first chapter of CHEW, Chu is on a case with his partner, undercover, at a speak-easy that serves chicken. He has the soup, thinking it’ll be his safest bet, and he can’t blow his cover… and then he sees images of girls being killed. He can feel the killer nearby, charges into the kitchen, and well, lets just say, after that incident, the FDA (who is like the ATF in this world) hires Chu on to eat the remains of murder victims to determine how they died. Sound awesome, doesn’t it?

Try CHEW v.1: TASTER’S CHOICE TPB this week at Third Eye, and if you don’t like it, we’ll give you your money back!
Wanna hop onboard with CHEW? The first trade paperback collects issues 1-5, and we’ve got plenty of issues #6, and #7 to catch you up to where the series is currently. We have so much faith in this series, and we personally like it so much, that we’re pretty sure you’re gonna dig it. If you try the trade, and don’t like it, bring it back, and we’ll give you a full refund for it!

GEOFF JOHNS’S (BLACKEST NIGHT WRITER)SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN #4 CONTINUES THE BEST SUPERMAN STORY WE’VE READ IN YEARS!

Man, has this been a good mini-series or what? You know, it’s funny, a few years back, I was the least likely person you could find that’d be raving about a Superman title. The character never clicked for me, but then the combination of Grant Morrison’s incredible ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (available now in TPB here at Third Eye) and then later, Geoff Johns’s killer run on ACTION COMICS (collected in trades likeSUPERMAN: BRAINIAC, and SUPERMAN AND THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES) got me hooked. I went back and rediscovered some of the great stories of yesteryear like John Bryne’s Man of Steel run, and Alan Moore’s take on the Man of Tomorrow, and I realized that Superman can be one of the coolest characters in superhero fiction when he’s written well. And, Geoff Johns gets that. He understands what makes the character appealing, he understands how to keep the iconic feel of the character while still adding a human, believable feel to the character. He realizes that what makes Superman so human is the fact that he’s not human at all, but from another planet.

The SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN series has been a great read, month after month, with the gorgeous pencils of GARY FRANK (who’s Superman resembles Christopher Reeves more than just a little bit), and the stellar writing of GEOFF JOHNS.

What’s the scoop? SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN is a six-issue limited series that re-introduces, and explores the origins of the Man of Steel, but with a 21st century spin. Essentially, it’s Johns showing us who Superman is, why he can be such a great character, and at the same time, developing the world around the character. Each issue seems to be focusing in on a key part of Superman’s life, we start issue #1 with him as an adolescent, first discovering his powers, and then having his origins revealed to him by Ma and Pa Kent. The second one showcases him as a teenager, and his first meeting with the Legion of Superheroes, who idolize him in the future, and the third, the best of the bunch, focuses on him as a young man in his early 20s, his first day in Metropolis and at the Planet, and a very iconic, first time revealing Superman to the world. Each issue shows the paralells that run between Superman and Lex Luthor, their upbringing, and how they’re getting to where we’ve all come to know them. We currently have all issues out so far, 1-3, well-stocked here at Third Eye, so if you haven’t yet jumped on, be sure to try the book this week, it’s REALLY good. Trust us, folks, this isn’t just a rehash of everything we already know… this is a 21st Century take on the MAN OF STEEL, and the superb characterization shows us why Geoff Johns is the man born to write this character.

This Week in Superman Secret Origin #4? We see the real turning point where Luthor decides it’s time to turn his priorities towards ridding the world of the Man of Steel. There’s hints of Parasite being introduced, as well as a look into his Kryptonian past.

IRREDEEMABLE #10 CONTINUES TO BUILD ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING NEW SUPERHERO UNIVERSES WE’VE SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME WITH MARK WAID’S “SUPERMAN GONE EVIL” STORYLINE!

Every single issue of IRREDEEMABLE makes this series better, and better. What could’ve been a simple, one-trick pony with the concept of a powerful superhero gone evil, has turned into a compelling new world being shaped by Mark Waid in the pages of Irredeemable, and now Incorruptible. Simply put, this is superhero awesomeness at it’s finest, and it just gets better with each issue.

The world of Irredeemable is one where the equivalent of SUPERMAN, The Plutonian, snaps after years of being taken for granted, betrayed, and abused by the very world he protects. Through series of flashbacks, we see small events that led to his descent into madness, and each issue, the story gets richer. Mark Waid is on point big time with this one, and he makes the story work, by building up the entire supporting cast, and world of the Plutonian. From his former team-mates, to his arch-enemies, the Plutonian’s world becomes more interesting with each issue.

If you haven’t yet tried IRREDEEMABLE, snag up the first trade paperback for just $10 here at Third Eye. We guarantee you’ll be hooked.

If you’re already aware of what is one of the greatest superhero books hitting the stands now, then we know you’re as anxious to see where things go with Modeus in this issue.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #619 *THE GAUNTLET PT 8* THE NEWLY RETURNED, AND EXTRA-VICIOUS MYSTERIO CONTINUES HIS TORMENT OF THE WEBCRAWLER THIS WEDNESDAY IN WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST RUN OF SPIDEY IN RECENT MEMORY!

First off… this cover is AWESOME. Secondly, if you’re a Marvel fan, or a lapsed Spidey fan who fell off during the whole Mephisto nonsense, then you need to hop onboard AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. It has been one of the best returns in quality of a character that we have seen in a long time. The Rhino issue from two weeks ago proves that, and last week’s start of the Mysterio arc continued the trend.

What’s the Gauntlet?
The Gauntlet is an over-arching storyline that’s been running through AMAZING SPIDER-MAN since issue #612. It’s basically the re-introduction of many of Spidey’s classic Rogues Gallery, as they wear him down one by one, for the eventual return of an all-new, all-brutal Sinister Six. So far, each 2-3 issue arc has done wonders with reintroducing these classic villains, and adding a new level of excitement to the world of Spider-man. And, lets be real, Spidey’s Rogues Gallery is one of the best, up there with Batman’s.. it’s only fair to see these villains being given their due.
Click hereto read the checklist of titles associated with the GAUNTLET

Mysterio!
Last week in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #618, we saw the return of MYSTERIO to things, and I have to say, I like what they’ve done reintroducing him a lot. I think Mysterio, and the new Rhino are probably my favorites so far, and it looks like we’ve got some killer storytelling to look forward to in the next couple of chapters involving Mysterio. PLUS, Marco Martin is doing the art, and he is one of the most perfect fits for Spidey I think I’ve seen in quite some time. A very cool, retro-esque style that definitely fits the overall tone of where the Gauntlet has been heading.

BLACKEST NIGHT JSA #2 BLACK LANTERN LOIS LANE IN PURSUIT OF SUPERMAN?

The first issue of BLACKEST NIGHT JSA was a personal favorite for me because I have always been a big fan of the Justice Society. DC handles the idea of “legacy” characters so well, and JSA has always done a fantastic job of reflecting this. If you were reading Blackest Night Superman, you’re probably wondering where Earth-2 Lois Lane, now a Black Lantern, went… well she’s in the pages of BLACKES NIGHT JSA in pursuit of Black Lantern Superman. And, this can only mean one thing: Power Girl’s days could be numbered.

PLUS, a whole slew of classic JSA members have returned from the grave, and are hungry for pain, death and misery.

CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #6 CONCLUDES THE EPIC SAGA OF STEVE ROGER’S RETURN THIS WEDNESDAY!

The epic saga of Steve Rogers return concludes here this week in CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #6. We know, it’s a little late, considering both Cap #602, and Who Will Wield the Shield have already shipped, but while late titles suck, we’re glad Marvel decided to keep things progressing and didn’t let the delay on this one slow down everything else in the Marvel U (being that Rogers plays a big role in the currently ongoing SIEGE event).

This whole story arc though has been an incredible read from start to finsh, delivering the bigger than life pulp-fusion storytelling that makes Brubaker one of the best writers Cap’s ever had. And, in this issue, we see the events that precede CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD, and their effects on the future of the Marvel Universe. It’s the Cap and the Avengers vs. The Red Skull, and someone’s going to go down big time.

We’re excited to see where things are going now, considering that a good deal of Brubaker’s run on Cap has been spent developing the character of Bucky Barnes, and his place in the world as the replacement for Captain America. It should be interesting to see his handling of Steve Rogers, in a world that’s a few years removed from what Rogers remembers last (Civil War, ect).

If you haven’t yet checked out REBORN, we currently have the entire series in stock now at Third Eye, which includes CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #1-5 (and now #6), and the CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN: WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD one-shot.

ROBERT KIRKMAN (writer of HAUNT and WALKING DEAD) debuts next PILOT SEASON one-shot this Wednesday with DEMONIC

When you’ve got Robert Kirkman writing a book, we tend to pay attention. The man behind some of our top Third Eye favorites like HAUNT, WALKING DEAD, and INVINCIBLE tends to not disappoint. And, after the killer success of his MURDERER one-shot, and it’s quick sellout at the publisher (c’mon TOP COW, give us a second printing!), we’re stoked to see what he has in store for us next.

This week, Kirkman’s going to be rolling out the next in his PILOT SEASON one-shots. Basically, the PILOT SEASON is a series of one-shots he’s writing where he’s doing one-shot “pilots”, and then letting the fans vote to see which one becomes a regular series. This week, it’s DEMONIC.

What’s the scoop on DEMONIC? When is murder justifiable? It’s justifiable to defend yourself, right? It’s justifiable if you’re defending your family, right?  But, is it justifiable if you’re killing in defense of yourself or family, AND to quench the thirst for souls of an ancient demon?

Meet Scott, a superpowered vigilante who kills bad guys. But, he’s not killing them out of his own vendetta for justice, but instead to quench the thirst of an ancient demon’s need for souls, or else he risks losing his family to that same very demon. Now, the question being asked here is: is the demon for real? Is Scott just a guy who’s mind was shattered by the weight of receiving superpowers, and uses the demon deal to explain his murders? And, a reason for his powers to exist.

Honestly, this one sounds freaking cool, and it’s Kirkman, so we know that the story is going to be way on point. Not to mention the interior art looks gorgeous by Joe Benitez.

FROM THE FOLKS WHO BROUGHT YOU RETURN TO WONDERLAND, COMES A TWISTED RENDITION OF NEVERLAND IN THIS WEDNESDAY’S NEVERLAND #0! ONLY $1.99!

Here’s one that we’re pretty stoked about at Third Eye. The folks at Zenescope who’ve brought us their Grimm Fairy Tales & Wonderland sagas with a dark twist, are unveiling their next big series this Wednesday, and it’s exploring the mythology of Peter Pan, Neverland, and Captain Hook with a very dark twist. One thing we can almost guarantee sight unseen is that the artwork in this book will be stunning, because that’s one of the big things that Zenescope has become known for.

From what I’ve read of the series, it sounds like it may be an all-new take on the subject, going as far to possibly be casting Peter Pan as the actual villain in this rendition of Neverland. What we do know from Zenescope’s track record is they will apply a very different, and very dark twist to the Peter Pan mythos, and we’re pumped to see where it goes this week. Check it out this Wednesday at Third Eye for only $1.99!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #41 DEBUTS THE ALL-NEW JUSTICE LEAGUE LINE-UP AND ALL-NEW DIRECTION FEATURING DICK GRAYSON AS BATMAN, HAL JORDAN, DONNA TROY, AND MORE!

Another one I’m really excited to see this week is the first issue of Jame Robinson’s JLA featuring the all-new line-up. The JLA has such a long, rich history that it’s always interesting to see a new team brought in, and I’ve been enjoying James Robinson’s JLA enough that I have high hopes for this one. The line-up is interesting, and for the most part, is one that I think is pretty solid in terms of believability, impact on the DCU, and storyline potential. It’s a good mix of classics like Batman (albeit Dick Grayson), JLA mainstays like Green Arrow, heavy-hitters like Green Lantern, legacy characters moving up the ranks like Starfire, Cyborg, and Donna Troy, and then some oddballs like Dr. Light, The Guardian, and Congorilla.

Yes, I’m excited about a book featuring Congorilla. I know, I can’t believe it either.

Seriously though, this is a great opportunity to hope aboard JLA if you haven’t already been following the book, and it’s a pretty promising start for some killer story arcs to launch out of this issue with the new team.

JUSTICE LEAGUE CRY FOR JUSTICE #6 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! READ THE SERIES THAT’S PAVED THE WAY FOR THE NEW JUSTICE LEAGUE LINE-UP!

James Robinson has been setting up the previously mentioned JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA roster change for a while now in the pages of this killer 7 issue limited series. This limited series, which began after the events of FINAL CRISIS, features a rag-tag gathering of Justice Leaguers, current, and former, who’ve had enough seeing their friends die time and time again. It’s in this series that the heroes step up their game quite a deal, and bring it to the bad guys head to head as they investigate a string of murders tied to (one of my personal favorite) an older JLA villain by the name of Prometheus (often described as the Anti-Batman).

They end up discovering a whole string of murders that tie back to Prometheus, as he has been on a quest to create the ultimate mass murder weapon: a teleporting device he plans to use to wipe out entire cities. Prometheus has been bringing it to the JLA pretty badly, and the events of this limited series are what set up for the brand new team and direction of JUSTICE LEAGUE in JLA #41.

Miss an issue? Haven’t read Cry for Justice yet? We currently have the previous 5 issues all well-stocked here at Third Eye, so if you wanna check the series out, catching up is no problem at all.

ROBOCOP RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY IN DYNAMITE COMICS ‘S (Publisher of THE BOYS, COMPLETE ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and MORE) CUTTING EDGE ROBOCOP #1

Who didn’t grow up in the ’80s or ’90s that wasn’t obsessed with ROBOCOP? It’s funny, because all the things that make the original ROBOCOP movie great (lets just forget the two sequels) were completely lost on me as a kid. I just knew it was awesome seeing a cyborg cop running around blowing people up. I recently watched ROBOCOP again a few years ago, and man, Paul Verhoeven really had something cool with that flick. Great social satire, and commentary, in a neat, distinctly late ’80s cyberpunk vein, meshed with some of the craziest ultraviolence you’d catch on a movie theater screen back then.

And, this, is why I’m stoked for Dynamite’s launch of a ROBOCOP comic. The character of ROBOCOP, and his world, lend itself very nicely to the modern style of comic books. And, Dynamite, who has proven they’re not afraid to let the blood spill, or to take a sarcastic approach to a subject (see THE BOYS), means that this should be a pretty solid read for anyone who’s a fan of Verhoeven’s cult classic flick.

WALKING DEAD #69… NO WORDS NEEDED TO DESCRIBE THE NEXT INSTALLMENT IN ONE OF THE ALL-TIME TOP 5 THIRD EYE FAVORITE SERIES!

Words can’t do this series justice. In fact, the less I say about this next issue, the better. As you can see, big things are about to begin to be revealed, and we can’t wait to see what’s happening next.

Are you reading WALKING DEAD in trade, and want to jump onto the singles? Can’t stand waiting months at a time to find out where the most compelling comic series on the stands is going next? We currently have both of the issues that follow after WALKING DEAD v.11 (released two weeks ago), issue #67, and #68, so all you need to hop aboard the monthly is Walking Dead v.11, #67, and #68.. trust us, it makes waiting a little bit easier.

For those of you not reading WALKING DEAD yet… all I can say is: pick up the trade paperback of Volume 1 as soon as you can. I have yet to find one person who didn’t like it. This is some of the best writing in comics. If you think it’s just a zombie story, you’re way off… this is character development, cliffhanger plots, and more. You’ll be hooked.

THOR #606 CONTINUES THE KILLER DR. DOOM vs. THOR STORYLINE THAT LEADS DIRECTLY TO SIEGE! NEED TO CATCH UP? WE HAVE PLENTY OF THOR #604, and THOR #605 (chapters 1 and 2 of the new arc) IN STOCK!

If you were digging JMS’s run on THOR, and left when he did.. then you are missing out on some of the finest THOR storytelling since JMS’s run began! Beginning in issue #604, and carrying over from the finale of JMS’s run, we see that Doom has been using the blood and organs of Asgardians to fuel his war machines, even going as far as to twist the Asgardians into hideous cyborg monsters to do his bidding. Of course, Thor is not down with this, and that leads us to some major throwdowns involving THOR, the Destroyer armor, and Dr. Doom!

Both THOR, and IRON MAN have been running parallel directly into, and alongside SIEGE, and out of many of the ongoing Marvel books, I feel that this series and INVINCIBLE IRON MAN are two of the most crucial to be reading if you’re getting amped up on what’s going down in SIEGE. Plus, Thor’s been a good book for over three years now, and just keeps on getting better. The new creative team of young gun rising star writer Kieron Gillen, and young gun rising star artist Billy Tan are delivering some of their best work on this one. Don’t believe me? Check out those preview pages… tell me the art’s not kicking.

It looks like in this issue we’re going to see what secrets Doom has up his sleeve, in addition to where Loki’s allegiances really lie. Is this going to be Doom’s play for power in taking over Asgard?

ULTIMATE COMICS ENEMY #1 FROM BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS REVEALS THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE’S GREATEST EVIL!

Brian Michael Bendis, the main man responsible for some of the Ultimate line’s biggest stories delivers this new limited series featuring many ultimate fan favorites like Spidey, Iceman, the FF, and more. This limited series is supposed to explore one of the Ultimate universe’s greatest threats, but outside of that, there isn’t a whole lot of info on the series. What we do know is the preview pages look sweet, and Bendis normally delivers big time on anything set in the ULTIMATE universe.

PUNISHER #13 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 3* HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! FIND OUT WHY FRANKENCASTLE IS TURNING INTO ONE OF MY PERSONAL BIG CULT FAVORITES! ONE OF THE BEST “LEGION OF MONSTERS” STORYLINES EVER WITH A GREAT QUIRKY, STEAMPUNKY BAD GUY!

Folks, I am loving Frankencastle. I’ll admit, the first issue, I was kind of left with my jaw hanging page after page, thinking one thing: WTF? But, then I read the second issue, and I’m so glad I gave it a chance to win me oer, because it did big time.

First off, you have two very talented guys working on this thing. Rick Remender, and Tony Moore. This is the same creative team who did some really cool stuff on the DARK HORSE series FEAR AGENT. Tony Moore also did the artwork on the first trade of WALKING DEAD. His art in Frankencastle looks to be some of his best work yet, and the colors on it are PERFECT. Most importantly, it fits the quirky, funky tone of the story just right. Secondly, it’s a very fun, fresh idea that brings some forgotten old characters back into the spotlight, and shows us why they’re cool.

The thing is though, you cannot go into FRANKENCASTLE expecting a straight-forward PUNISHER story. In fact, Frankencastle is more of a REALLY AWESOME Legion of Monsters story than it is a PUNISHER story, and I think that’s why it works so well.

What’s the scoop? Punisher got his head cut off in the brutal DARK REIGN THE LIST: PUNISHER one-shot (still in stock here at Third Eye, if you missed it!), by Dark Wolverine (Daken). His body parts get dumped into the sewers, and retrieved by the remaining Morlocks, where they take them deeper into the Morlock tunnels to some very familiar frightful characters. Morbius the Living Vampire, Man-Thing, Werewolf By Night, the Living Mummy… they’re all here. And, they patch the Punisher back together into an undead monstrosity that can only be called Frankencastle (due to the resemblance to Frankenstein’s Monster). See, there’s a legion of cyborg Samurai’s led by a steampunk-esque madman who has one goal in life: DESTROY ALL MONSTERS! Morbius, and his monster brethern decide they need the Punisher’s war time strategy to defend their dying people, and the Punisher (who’s using a synaptic nerve medicine to keep his brain functioning, so he’s not just a rambling madman) is reluctant to help. In fact, he keeps asking “Why did you bring me back?” And, it’s not until the surreal final pages of PUNISHER #12 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 2*, where we see Frank come to the realization he has to help these people, as he cradles a young child Morlock (in a Devo shirt…) in his arms, a smoking hole in the youngster’s chest.

I know, it sounds like it shouldn’t work on any level. It sounds completely absurd, and ridiculous, but I think this is part of why I love it so much, and because of these things… it does work, and takes a completely different angle on the PUNISHER. I won’t lie either, the incredibly fitting artwork of Tony Moore is a big draw too. He manages to capture the surreal, sideshow monster feel in vivid color, and it makes the story moves so smoothly.

If you haven’t yet jumped onboard with FRANKENCASTLE, we still have PUNISHER #11, and PUNISHER #12 in stock, and those two chapters’ll catch you up to the newest installment this week. If you’re a fan of irreverent, quirky fun in books like CHEW, and COWBOY NINJA VIKING, then you should totally be reading this. It rocks.

For those of you who’re on board, it looks like we’re gonna see a giant chaingun-toting Frankencastle laying waste to the monster-hunters in glorious technicolor style.

TRANSFORMERS: LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERSBRINGS ON MORE CLASSIC G1-STYLE TRANSFORMER GOODNESS!

I’m a child of the ’80s and ’90s, so it’s obvious that I’ve got a soft spot for everyone’s favorite giant robots. The problem I had for a while though, was IDW’s Transformer books often strayed too far from the characters I grew up with, and loved. While I really enjoyed the expanded mythos of the Transformers, I really had no interest in the inclusion of the stuff from the films. Well, it looks like with the introduction of the brand new TRANSFORMERS ongoing series, they’re getting back to basics, and I can tell you from the responses I’ve seen from many of you, I’m not alone in my renewed excitement about the Transformers books.

This Wednesday, we get a new limited series from the creative team that brought us the killer MAXIMUM DINOBOTS, and it’s featuring the Autobots, THE WRECKERS. Now, this can only mean one thing, right? Constructicons? We can hope.

Either way, I’ve been impressed so far by the new ongoing series in terms of the writing and the art, so I’m stoked to see where they go with this new limited series.

STAFF PICKS

Trish – JOE THE BARBARIAN #1 – It was a quick read, but hey, for a buck, you definitely get your money’s worth. Really cool set-up for what should be one of the best Vertigo books of this year.

Torma – DARK WOLVERINE #82 *SIEGE* - GREAT issue. HUGE surprise at the end involving Daken and Osborn. You thought the end of PUNISHER DARK REIGN THE LIST was a surprise? Read this! TOTAL MAYHEM

Steve – DARK AVENGERS #13 *SIEGE* – This one gets pick of the week for the simple reason that it took a character I absolutely despised, and had me totally digging him by the end of just one issue. The REAL origin of the Sentry is revealed, and it’s an ugly truth. Can’t recommend checking this one out, folks, even if you haven’t followed DARK AVENGERS in a while.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 11/18/09

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612 *THE GAUNTLET PT 1* – THE GAUNTLET BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY! THE BIGGEST SPIDER-MAN STORY IN AGES, AS HIS CLASSIC ROGUES GALLERY IS REDEFINED FOR THE 21st CENTURY! BY IRREDEEMABLE WRITER MARK WAID!

This story has been brewing since the return of Doc Ock in Amazing Spider-man #600, and I’ve gotta say, Marvel’s got me stoked. The Spidey books really begin to make a turn towards being better with American Son last year, and then a big step towards improvement with the turning points of issue #600. Old, forgotten villains slowly began to return in the pages of ASM, and the new takes on the Chameleon and Doc Ock, were both very good.

But all of this was just a prelude to what is sure to be one of the biggest Spidey stories in history, and that’s The Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is a new storyline (which begins in this week’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612) which will be a year long marathon for Spidey, where old classic Spider-man villains are brought back with a vicious new edge. The first of which is Electro, who I don’t think we’ve seen since the events on the Raft in NEW AVENGERS. And of course, we’ll be seeing the Vulture, The Rhino, and more as the storyline continues.

So, what’s the scoop on Electro’s return? Well, here you have one of the coolest Spidey villains, when it comes to visual appearance, and his powers, but he’s also one of the least-respected. This first story arc in the Gauntlet is about that, and from what we’ve been told Electro’s powers have been considerably amped up. The thing is as Electro makes the transition into middle-age, his metabolism changes, and so do his powers. They’re more erratic, and less easy to control. And, that’s where the amping up comes from, because he’s going to be getting a pretty surprising Marvel villain to help stabilize his powers and make him meaner, and better than before. Of course, Electro’s big motivation may not center around Spidey, but a sense of outrage over the fact that the fortune he’s accumulated over the years was lost in the economic meltdown. Now, he’s almost somewhat of a folk hero, electrocuting corrupt corporate fat cats…. but of course, he’s still a bad dude, and when Spidey gets in his way, he’s going to toast him.

Now, beyond the whole Electro thing, the one thing we know that is going to be an ongoing theme in the GAUNTLET storyline is how these familiar villains returning to bring pain to Peter Parker’s life are going to be coming after him one after the other after the other. We know that big changes are expected to happen, and this storyline is supposed to be a real no holds barred kind of assault on the character.

IRREDEEMABLE writer MARK WAID is going to be penning this arc that begins in Amazing Spider-man #612. And, the artist, someone who I haven’t heard of is a very bold and interesting choice for Spidey. I think the art looks great, and it has a very gritty, almost Vertigo-esque vibe to it, that really adds a whole new level of darkness to what is sure to be one hell of an arc.

But I think we all know what’s really cool about this: It’s classic Spidey villains coming back with a bang!

TWO MORE LANTERN RINGS ARRIVE THIS WEEK AT THIRD EYE! BLUE LANTERN RING & VIOLET “STAR SAPPHIRE” RING! ALONG, WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE TIE-INS… ADVENTURE COMICS #4 *RETURN OF SUPERBOY PRIME* &OUTSIDERS #24! PLUS BLACK LANTERN SOLOMON GRUNDY FACES BIZARRO & MAN-BAT IN SUPERMAN/BATMAN #66!

The Lantern Rings that have been dropping with all the Blackest Night tie-ins have been a huge hit here at Third Eye. We’ve been going through rings faster than we expected. But, worry not though, we still have a very limited amount of Orange, Indigo, and Yellow Rings available, so if you haven’t gotten your’s yet, we have you covered. To read more about how you can get your Power Rings, clickhere

Now, onto this week, we’ve got two tie-ins, both of which look good, but one of which I’m personally VERY excited for. And, that’s the ADVENTURE COMICS #4. Reasons why? Well, first off.. it’s written by GEOFF JOHNS, you know, the guy who’s been writing the main BLACKEST NIGHT series (and GREEN LANTERN) all this time, and pretty much masterminding all of this killer suff. And, then secondly, it’s featuring the return of everyone’s favorite mass-murdering crybaby, SUPERBOY PRIME. And, then, to top it all off, it looks like he’s met his match, as the Black Lanterns know just the buttons to push to make Superboy Prime’s heart all tasty for them to gobble down. This is probably going to be one of the best ring-related tie-ins, being how Adventure Comics is already a stellar read, and then the addition of a fan-favorite villain like SUPERBOY PRIME. Ontop of all that, when you purchase ADVENTURE COMICS #4, you get a FREE Blue Lantern ring!

And, then, next up, we’ve got OUTSIDERS #24, which spins directly out of the events of BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS. Black Lantern Terra is back with a vengeance, and she wants to gobble down the hearts of Geo-Force, and the Outsiders. When you purchase OUTSIDERS #24, you’ll receive a free VIOLET *STAR SAPPHIRE* ring. To be honest on this one, I think it could go either way. I REALLY liked Blackest Night Titans, and Peter Tomasi has proven himself as a really stellar writer (handling a good chunk of tie-in stuff already for Blackest Night, in addition to the killer work he’s done on Green Lantern Corps, and underrated miniseries like GOTHAM UNDERGROUND). However, I haven’t been following OUTSIDERS as closely, so it really could go either way.

And, as a side note… dude, Booster Gold and Rebels were both AWESOME last week. I expected the Booster to be really good, but the REBELS, I wasn’t too sure about. I actually went back and checked out most of the back issues on the series, because I enjoyed that issue so much. It’s a good book, really deserves a look. The artwork, and writing are both top notch, and the whole idea of a superteam for hire is pretty damn cool. I don’t know, it was awesome…. the ending of REBELS #10 is great, even if you haven’t been following the series. A big twist as a perfect fit for the Sinestro Corps is chosen. And, the whole plot running with Starro the Conqueror (turns out those starfish things were just his drones, but Starro himself is an actual humanoid warlord) is pretty damn cool.

Finally, on the Blackest Night plate this week, we’ve got what’s sure to be the most humorous of the Blackest Night tie-ins with SUPERMAN/BATMAN #66.Yes, it’s Black Lantern Solomon Grundy versus Bizarro & Man-Bat in this one-shot Blackest Night tie-in.

THIRD EYE GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOTLIGHT:BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL HC, GREEN LANTERN CORPS – EMERALD ECLIPSE HC *PRELUDE TO BLACKEST NIGHT*, WAR OF KINGS HARDCOVER, ROBERT KIRKMAN’S DESTROYER, DARK AVENGERS VOLUME 1 AND NEW AVENGERS VOLUME 11 TRADE PAPERBACKS… A BIG WEEK FOR GREAT TRADES & HARDCOVERS!

Man, it is a stacked week for good trades and hardcovers. Some real blockbusters too, like the Battle for the Cowl hardcover, and the WAR OF KINGS hardcover.

Anyways, here’s a quick rundown of what’s arriving this week…

The biggest Batman story of last Spring, and the genesis of all the awesome stuff happening now in the Bat-universe. This is the story where Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Dick Grayson, and many more are all racing to figure out who will be the man to wear the mantle of the Bat. A great read, with some fantastic artwork. This is definitely one of those must-read Batman graphic novels.

Green Lantern Emerald Eclipse collects the Prelude to Blackest Night issues of GREEN LANTERN CORPS. This is where Mongul enslaves the planet Daxam, and makes it the homebase for his Mongul Corps of Rogue Yellow Lanterns. A great read, and great set up for this year’s BLACKEST NIGHT event!

War of Kings was one of the hippest little Marvel events of 2009. In the shadow of big events like DARK REIGN, War of Kings continued to do what stories like ANNIHILATION and ANNIHILATION CONQUEST had done before it, and that’s strengthen and enrich the cosmic end of the Marvel Universe. The entire WAR OF KINGS saga is now collected here, along with WAR OF KINGS ASCENSION 1-4, WAR OF KINGS DARKHAWK 1-2, WAR OF KINGS WARRIORS, WAR OF KINGS WHO WILL RULE, WAR OF KINGS SAVAGE WORLD OF SAKAAR and WAR OF KINGS MARVEL SPOTLIGHT. This one’s a massive tome of space opera awesomeoness.

A cult favorite from last year. DESTROYER from Robert Kirkman (writer of WALKING DEAD & INVINCIBLE) is one of the most violent, bloody things the writer has ever done. It’s the story of the Destroyer, a masked vigilante, who is now in his senior ages, and on his way to the grave. So what’s he do? Hunt down and slaughter every supervillain he’s ever encountered to leave the world a safer place for his family.

DARK AVENGERS volume 1 collects the first six issues of the biggest Marvel series to launch in 2009. Imagine this, the Avengers are composed of predominantly bad guys, and their leader.. Norman Osborn! Killer story, killer art. A great read.

COWBOY NINJA VIKING #2 - MULTIPLE PERSONALITY MAYHEM! IN THIS FOLLOW-UP TO THE SMASH HIT NEW IMAGE SERIES!

Image has been really making a name for itself these last couple of years. I personally credit the success of fresh new series like WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE as a big part of their new direction. They’ve really cemented their place in the comics industry as a publisher that is not afraid to take chances, and put out quirky yet fresh new ideas that end up being the one thing we love here most at Third Eye: damn good comics.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is a perfect example of this. This is a story about a world where individuals with multiple personality disorder are turned into agents of destruction known as triplets. They hone in on three dominant personalities, and turn them into assassins capable of some serious mayhem. And of course, the star of this series, Cowboy Ninja Viking, has three personalities that are constantly at odds with each other. The ninja being the thinker, the Viking being the killer, and the Cowboy being the loose cannon. What you get is a humorous yet ultra-violent tale where the three personalities cause the man they reside in to do horrible, and reckless things.

And, now in this week’s issue #2, we get to see COWBOY NINJA VIKING going head to head with the Triplet introduced at the beginning (and end) of issue #1. Yes, it’s the fellow in the deep sea diver helmet on the cover. And, yes it will be awesome.

The title of the book makes it seem like it’s going to be just a straight humor book. You know, something that would be a good meme on the web, but Cowboy Ninja Viking reminds you more of a frenetic Quentin Tarantino meets Takashi Miike movie than it does a one-trick pony joke. Also, a big addition to the awesomeoness of the series we think is the unique artwork by Riley Rossmo (who also does PROOF for Image, a book about a Bigfoot that works for the FBI, flesh-eating faeries, and monsters that wear human skin… we recommend checking it out!). The art in this series is very stylized, and carries the story well. The tones, and pacing really capture the frenetic concept of the book.

We’ve got #1s in stock here at Third Eye in case you missed issue #1, and if you did, then we highly miss checking out this series this week.

For those of you who got the first one, and dug it, be sure to check out this follow-up issue this week. The first one had a lot to cram in, with the setting up of the world, and introducing the characters (and that was my only complaint, too much going on), but it looks like the second one is going to take all the awesome points of the first and really carry the story forward. Plus, it looks like it’s going to be one seriously bloody throwdown!

Click here for an interview with the creators of COWBOY NINJA VIKING to learn more about the series, and what they have planned for it!

FRANKENCASTLE BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY INPUNISHER #11 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 1*FOLLOWING THE SHOCKING DISMEMBERMENT OF THE PUNISHER IN DARK REIGN THE LIST: PUNISHER ONE-SHOT

The conclusion of last month’s DARK REIGN THE LIST PUNISHER one-shot was a HUGE shock. HUGE! It’s not often that Marvel surprises us all like that without any kind of warning or hints. In case you missed it, the Punisher was brutally dismembered by Daken (Dark Wolverine), decapitated, and mutilated, his body parts were scattered about.

Now, beginning this week, Frankencastle, featuring the creative team of Rick Remender and Tony Moore (known for their cult favorite FEAR AGENT, and Tony Moore as the original artist of WALKING DEAD), shows us a bizarre take on the character of the Punisher. Everything is very hush hush on just what this storyline is going to entail, but after the huge ending of the LIST PUNISHER one-shot, combined with the stellar creative team onboard for this, we’re expecting it to be pretty cool.

But seriously, this is going to go either one of two ways: Frankencastle is going to be REALLY REALLY cool, or REALLY REALLY not cool. The idea is definitely out there, and the whole concept of the Punisher being resurrected as an undead monstrosity is pretty damn out of left field. But, hey, sometimes ideas that sound ridiculous and impossible, are just so ridiculous that they end up being incredible. This was the case with Marvel Zombies and it’s original inception (of course, now it’s been run into the ground a bit, but man when that first series hit, it was fresh as hell).

So, I guess, FRANKENCASTLE ranks up there as the title I am most curious about this week, and expecting the most surprise from.

Clickhere to check out a preview of PUNISHER #11 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 1*

DARK AVENGERS #11 – WHO IS THE MOLECULE MAN, AND WHY IS NORMAN OSBORN TERRIFIED OF HIM?

Dark Avengers continues to keep going strong as a solid monthly read. The last page of last month’s DARK AVENGERS #10 was pretty epic indeed, and now the effects of that last page are going to unravel in this week’s newest issue.

Who is the obscure villain the Molecule Man? And, why is Norman Osborn sweating this one big time? And, how the hell are the Dark Avengers going to fight a being that control the very molecules that make them up?

The road to Seige continues, as Osborn’s plans continue to unravel… and now it’s time to see what the mysterious cabal of Molecule Man, the Beyonder, Enchantress, and Mephisto have to say about things.

BLACKEST NIGHT SCRIBE GEOFF JOHNS’SFLASH REBIRTH #5 ARRIVES AFTER MUCH ANTICIPATION!

Despite the delays, we are still extremely excitetd about getting the next issue of GEOFF JOHNS’S FLASH REBIRTH. Now, as someone who grew up reading comics in the ’90s… Wally was my Flash. He’s the one I grew up with as the Flash. All those great high-energy Mark Waid Flash story arcs, and then the later Mark Millar, Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns arcs. They were my bread and butter as a kid. I loved em. Barry was before my time, and I never really got to know the character. Never really had a huge attachment to him.

And, then Geoff Johns does what he does for nearly every friggin’ DCU Character, and made me like Barry Allen. Flash Rebirth has been as much about making Barry Allen into an accessible, modern 21st century character as it has been about the actual in-continuity return of the character. Johns has been breathing new life into Barry, and since Barry’s been dead pretty much since before the modern style of storytelling that’s the mainstay in comics these days came around, he’s got pretty much a blank slate to play with.

But, anyways, enough about all that.. Flash Rebirth has been awesome, the story’s been great, the art’s been incredible.. we love it. And, this week, we finally get issue #5!

REALM OF KINGS ONE-SHOT KICKS OFF THE NEXT CHAPTER IN THE COSMIC SAGA OF MARVEL’S ANNIHILATION/WAR OF KINGS CHARACTERS!

One of the most impressive relaunches of this decade for Marvel has been their revival of their cosmic characters. What were once underused, and overlooked characters have slowly been turned into some of the most compelling series coming out. It all began in the pages of ANNIHILATION and ANNIHILATION conquest (now available in trade paperback) and then continued last year in the pages of WAR OF KINGS (arriving this week in hardcover). Now, the REALM OF KINGS begins, and continues the trend in high-action, bigger than life space opera sci-fi awesomeoness set against the backdrop of the Marvel landscape. Just take everything that is cool about stuff like WARHAMMER 40K, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and apply it to the world of Marvel Superheroes, and you’ll get the Marvel Cosmic-verse.

Realm of Kings follows up on the aftermath of WAR OF KINGS (Where Blackbolt screamed off Vulcan’s skin!), and also promises the return of the original Quasar. After seeing all of the awesome things that they’ve done with characters like Darkhawk, Nova, the Guardians of the Galaxy and more, we’re very eager to see the return of Quasar here at Third Eye.

Also, arriving alongside the REALM OF KINGS one-shot this week is the REALM OF KINGS INHUMAN limited series that’s kicking off. After the huge part that Black Bolt and the Inhumans played in the WAR OF KINGS, we’re really excited to see how this one turns out.

DARK REIGN THE LIST AMAZING SPIDER-MAN *THE LIST PT 8* DELIVERS AN EPIC CONFRONTATION BETWEEN NORMAN OSBORN AND SPIDER-MAN!

Out of all the Dark Reign The List one-shots, I feel that this is going to be the biggest, or at least on the level of the Punisher one-shot. The creative team lined up for this one is stellar, with Adam Kubert handling the art chores. And, it’s also the final chapter of THE LIST, and plays a huge part in what is going to be the conclusion of this whole Dark Reign thing.

But, lets be real… it’s Spider-man going up against his most hated enemy, Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin. While this whole DARK REIGN/DARK AVENGERS thing has gone on, we’ve been waiting and wondering about how Spidey would play into the mix, what with Osborn being his mortal foe, and now it looks like we’re going to find out.

This is the story where Norman Osborn decides to finally execute Spider-man once and for all. Now, will he succeed? While we’re not expecting a Spidey death, we do expect big universe-shaking ramifications that make this one-shot a very special DARK REIGN THE LIST chapter.

SPIDER-WOMAN #3 – THE BEST TITLE YOU’RE NOT READING! PURE ESPIONAGE AWESOMEONESS COURTESY OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CREATIVE TEAM BENDIS & MALEEV

Dude, if you’re not reading Spider-woman, you are missing out. This series has one of the best teams in comics working on it, with Bendis & Maleev (who did what’s in my opinion one of the best all-time Daredevil runs), and trust us, it’s GOOD. We know, we know, skrulls are played out, but the skrulls really play a VERY VERY minor role in this. It’s more about Jessica Drew working as a kind of a government-sponsored bounty hunter that tracks down aliens in hiding (NOT JUST SKRULLS!).

The writing is 100% on-point, and the artwork is PERFECT for the series. Maleev’s gritty pencils pull you in, and don’t let you out.

Currently, Spider-woman’s knee deep in trouble in the dark alleys of Madripoor, and Madame Hydra wants to bring her home to the nest.

The tone, and feel of the book kind of reminds you of a more brutal, super-power charged La Femme Nikita, and if you remember that show, then you know what we’re talking about.

Either way, give Spider-woman a shot. We currently have issues 1, and 2 both in stock, so it’s relatively easy to catch up.

VICTORIAN UNDEAD #1 - SHERLOCK HOLMES VERSUS FLESH-EATING ZOMBIES? YOU BETCHA! A GREAT STEAMPUNK-ISH NEW SERIES FROM WILDSTORM, THE FOLKS WHO BROUGHT YOU NORTH 40!

What’s better than the adventures of the world’s most famous detective? Well, when you pit the world’s most famous detective against hordes of flesh-eating zombie freaks, that’s what!

Honestly, folks, I got to read a bit of this, and it was pretty fun. I really have no idea what to expect as the premise sounds so ridiculous, and over-the-top… that really, anything can happen. But, the art is tight, the story looks pretty good, and the zombie angle, while cool, doesn’t look to be the only thing this book is carrying. It has a very Steampunk Adventures of Watson and Holmes kind of thing going on, that I think is pretty damn cool.

TRANSFORMERS #1 – BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES FEATURING G1-ERA TRANSFORMERS!

Finally! An ongoing Transformers series! And it’s featuring all of the characters that we love and grew up with here at Third Eye. Seriously though, lets face it, if you grew up in the ’80s, you’ve got a fondness for Transformers, or GI JOE, or both. And, while series like Maximum Dinobots and All Hail Megatron have been good, solid reads, the non-stop random mini-series, one-shots, and so forth have lacked consistency.

So it’s a welcome change to see IDW rolling out an ongoing Transformers comic finally. And it’s everything you’d want out of a good TF comic… good art, a writer who knows the characters well , and an overall direction for the characters.

THE AUTHORITY.. IS NOW GOOD AGAIN! CHECK OUT THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR THIS WEEK!

Man, the Authority was one of my favorite books when I was a teenager. This is back when Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch first kicked it off, and then Mark Millar and Frank Quitely took it over. I mean, after those two creative teams left, it never really was quite the same. Dan Abnett did some pretty cool work on it, and Brubaker had a nice little run, but nothing ever matched the level of those first two runs.

If you haven’t already read the original Authority stuff, I recommend snagging AUTHORITY RELENTLESS (volume 1), AUTHORITY UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT (volume 2), and AUTHORITY TRANSFER OF POWER. Those are some of the best superhero comics of the late 90s, early 2000s, and they really paved the way for a lot of what we have now. In fact, I credit the Authority with helping make the big widescreen way of superhero storytelling we have now so popular. See, without the Authority, we wouldn’t have had Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimates, and without the Ultimates, well, lets just say I don’t think the Avengers would be the mega-popular team they are now. In other words, the Authority redefined the dynamics of superteams, and their place in the world. Gritty, realistic, and sometimes violent as hell, the Authority took the perfect balance of social issues, politics, and bigger than life spaceships crashing into city spires action, and made it into one crazy awesome series.

The last real glimmer of hope I had for the Authority was when Grant Morrison and Gene Ha were going to do a run on the series. They only did two issues, and then the book kind of was left in limbo. The plot? The Authority crosses dimensions, and ends up in OUR world, our physical world, where they’re just comic books. There’s a very surreal moment where a couple members of the team are in a comic shop, looking at a copy of the Relentless graphic novel.

And of course, with them coming into our world, it means that bad mojo is happening on our planet. Now, of course, these ideas were explored later in more detail with books like 1985, but either way, we’re excited to see the Authority back.

Wildstorm has reissued the first two issues in a collected comic called THE AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER, that’s the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR 1 and 2, for only $2.99. And, now the series is being finished with Grant Morrison’s blessing by the very talented KEITH GIFFEN (he made the Justice League totally awesome way back in the day, and has since done some crazy good stuff like 52, ANNIHILATION, and more). Issue #3 ships this week, and we still have plenty of the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER available for you to catch up with.

VIKING #4 DELIVERS MORE OF THAT GOODFELLAS MEETS THE 9TH CENTURY MAYHEM THAT WE’VE COME TO LOVE THIS WEDNESDAY!

It’s been a while since issue #3, but we’re just as pumped for the new issue of VIKING, especially after how awesome the third one was. Viking is pretty simply explained.. it’s the story of organized crime, in the Viking era. And, it is brutal as all hell. The real standout though about Viking is the gorgeous artwork that accompanies each issue.

Finn and Egil thought they had the perfect heist to pull, but now they’re falling deep into their own personal hell without any way out.

Brutal, awesome, and totally great, this one’s definitely guaranteed to be well worth the wait.

The Spidey books really begin to make a turn towards being better with American Son last year, and then a big step towards improvement with the turning points of issue #600. Old, forgotten villains slowly began to return in the pages of ASM, and the new takes on the Chameleon and Doc Ock, were both very good.&nbsp;<br><br>But all of this was just a prelude to what is sure to be one of the biggest Spidey stories in history, and that’s The Gauntlet. And of course, we’ll be seeing the Vulture, The Rhino, and more as the storyline continues.<br><br>So, what’s the scoop on Electro’s return? Now, he’s almost somewhat of a folk hero, electrocuting corrupt corporate fat cats…. but of course, he’s still a bad dude, and when Spidey gets in his way, he’s going to toast him.&nbsp;<br><br>Now, beyond the whole Electro thing, the one thing we know that is going to be an ongoing theme in the GAUNTLET storyline is how these familiar villains returning to bring pain to Peter Parker’s life are going to be coming after him one after the other after the other. We know that big changes are expected to happen, and this storyline is supposed to be a real no holds barred kind of assault on the character.&nbsp;<br><br>IRREDEEMABLE writer MARK WAID is going to be penning this arc that begins in Amazing Spider-man #612. And, the artist, someone who I haven’t heard of is a very bold and interesting choice for Spidey. I think the art looks great, and it has a very gritty, almost Vertigo-esque vibe to it, that really adds a whole new level of darkness to what is sure to be one hell of an arc.<br><br>But I think we all know what’s really cool about this: It’s classic Spidey villains coming back with a bang!<br><br><font size=”4″><u style=”text-decoration: underline; “><b style=”font-weight: bold; “><span style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; “>TWO MORE LANTERN RINGS ARRIVE THIS WEEK AT THIRD EYE! Ontop of all that, when you purchase&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUVmvr531AJLLFVRh6eG4tW_KVpOjGnOI-hlbnoxzYbEOeSE-u6mT07zO61E0zvXsIg==” shape=”rect”>ADVENTURE COMICS #4</a>, you get a FREE Blue Lantern ring!<br><br>And, then, next up, we’ve got&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUVmvr531AJLLFVRh6eG4tW_KVpOjGnOI-hlbnoxzYbEOQsK7M7e6cE9bQbjlklo4vA==” shape=”rect”>OUTSIDERS #24</a>, which spins directly out of the events of BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS. Black Lantern Terra is back with a vengeance, and she wants to gobble down the hearts of Geo-Force, and the Outsiders. When you purchase&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUVmvr531AJLLFVRh6eG4tW_KVpOjGnOI-hlbnoxzYbEOQsK7M7e6cE9bQbjlklo4vA==” shape=”rect”>OUTSIDERS #24</a>, you’ll receive a free VIOLET *STAR SAPPHIRE* ring.&nbsp; To be honest on this one, I think it could go either way. However, I haven’t been following OUTSIDERS as closely, so it really could go either way.&nbsp;<br><br>And, as a side note… dude, Booster Gold and Rebels were both AWESOME last week. And, the whole plot running with Starro the Conqueror (turns out those starfish things were just his drones, but Starro himself is an actual humanoid warlord) is pretty damn cool.&nbsp;<br><br>Finally, on the Blackest Night plate this week, we’ve got what’s sure to be the most humorous of the Blackest Night tie-ins with&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUVmvr531AJLLFVRh6eG4tW_KVpOjGnOI-hlbnoxzYbEOyOnoENS76kEwCl7SWSRaIg==” shape=”rect”>SUPERMAN/BATMAN #66.</a>Yes, it’s Black Lantern Solomon Grundy versus Bizarro &amp; Man-Bat in this one-shot Blackest Night tie-in.&nbsp;<br><br><br><font style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” size=”4″>THIRD EYE GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOTLIGHT:<span style=”color: rgb(255, 0, 0); “>BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL HC</span>, GREEN LANTERN CORPS – EMERALD ECLIPSE HC *PRELUDE TO BLACKEST NIGHT*, WAR OF KINGS HARDCOVER, ROBERT KIRKMAN’S DESTROYER, DARK AVENGERS VOLUME 1 AND NEW AVENGERS VOLUME 11 TRADE PAPERBACKS… A BIG WEEK FOR GREAT TRADES &amp; HARDCOVERS!</font> <IMG SRC=”http://www.dccomics.com/media/product/1/3/13356_400×600.jpg”> <br>Man, it is a stacked week for good trades and hardcovers. IN THIS FOLLOW-UP TO THE SMASH HIT NEW IMAGE SERIES!</font><br> <IMG SRC=”http://www.comicbookresources.com/assets/images/articles/1254839851.jpg”> <br>Image has been really making a name for itself these last couple of years. I personally credit the success of fresh new series like WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE as a big part of their new direction. They’ve really cemented their place in the comics industry as a publisher that is not afraid to take chances, and put out quirky yet fresh new ideas that end up being the one thing we love here most at Third Eye: damn good comics.<br><br>Cowboy Ninja Viking is a perfect example of this. What you get is a humorous yet ultra-violent tale where the three personalities cause the man they reside in to do horrible, and reckless things.&nbsp;<br><br>And, now in this week’s issue #2, we get to see COWBOY NINJA VIKING going head to head with the Triplet introduced at the beginning (and end) of issue #1. Yes, it’s the fellow in the deep sea diver helmet on the cover. And, yes it will be awesome.<br><br>The title of the book makes it seem like it’s going to be just a straight humor book. The tones, and pacing really capture the frenetic concept of the book.<br><br>We’ve got #1s in stock here at Third Eye in case you missed issue #1, and if you did, then we highly miss checking out this series this week.<br><br>For those of you who got the first one, and dug it, be sure to check out this follow-up issue this week. The first one had a lot to cram in, with the setting up of the world, and introducing the characters (and that was my only complaint, too much going on), but it looks like the second one is going to take all the awesome points of the first and really carry the story forward. Plus, it looks like it’s going to be one seriously bloody throwdown!<br><br>Click&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCawkWxmHw677GqHvhEnz5bAAf2JwF7yOeHCE4GHo5T8d1u8ZVRrv9icjkigAR-kQLhNysaAYyx7BxxI1BY2rNFMGMsREOKV2PI=” shape=”rect”>here</a>&nbsp;for an interview with the creators of COWBOY NINJA VIKING to learn more about the series, and what they have planned for it!<br><br><font style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” size=”4″>JOSS WHEDON’S&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaa6LJoxflUafyHuxe-wLi18hKlnkKNF4PsEi-ktUuKJusM8r1wTTE_wkOQ1tofo2rblHHpDtW6eKni-2dObdlcoET2w7o-bXpP2GX6hSeuOxC3bWG9-jv_CEk3OjMNDvpStv5PZ3uI7uPm7zF68CoPSzph1UA-69-eBkAdvVJJgRFGFK5IoycAOzkP9z9Dfj9tFdv8m50e7l83W7pCL7SYg==” shape=”rect”>DR. HUGE! It’s not often that Marvel surprises us all like that without any kind of warning or hints. In case you missed it, the Punisher was brutally dismembered by Daken (Dark Wolverine), decapitated, and mutilated, his body parts were scattered about.<br><br>Now, beginning this week, Frankencastle, featuring the creative team of Rick Remender and Tony Moore (known for their cult favorite FEAR AGENT, and Tony Moore as the original artist of WALKING DEAD), shows us a bizarre take on the character of the Punisher. Everything is very hush hush on just what this storyline is going to entail, but after the huge ending of the LIST PUNISHER one-shot, combined with the stellar creative team onboard for this, we’re expecting it to be pretty cool.<br><br>But seriously, this is going to go either one of two ways: Frankencastle is going to be REALLY REALLY cool, or REALLY REALLY not cool. The idea is definitely out there, and the whole concept of the Punisher being resurrected as an undead monstrosity is pretty damn out of left field. But, hey, sometimes ideas that sound ridiculous and impossible, are just so ridiculous that they end up being incredible. This was the case with Marvel Zombies and it’s original inception (of course, now it’s been run into the ground a bit, but man when that first series hit, it was fresh as hell).&nbsp;<br><br>So, I guess, FRANKENCASTLE ranks up there as the title I am most curious about this week, and expecting the most surprise from.&nbsp;<br><br>Click<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaaeT_SRbdQ1COwtWRCP8xBFYDkQb0xUzswe62-enXJr1hgr6XsoxN_8sAHmAVWy2PHeVOTaPH0prMpMKmmh4Uo6mtlcYcX8xsZz7DCZfXzm_eLU1k1G5o6g==” shape=”rect”>here</a>&nbsp;to check out a preview of&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaaeT_SRbdQ1COwtWRCP8xBFYDkQb0xUzswe62-enXJr1hgr6XsoxN_8sAHmAVWy2PHeVOTaPH0prMpMKmmh4Uo6mtlcYcX8xsZz7DCZfXzm_eLU1k1G5o6g==” shape=”rect”>PUNISHER #11 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 1*</a><br><br><font style=”font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”4″>DARK AVENGERS #11 – WHO IS THE MOLECULE MAN, AND WHY IS NORMAN OSBORN TERRIFIED OF HIM?<br><br></font> <IMG SRC=”http://marvel.com/i/content/st/24807new_storyimage0005677_full.jpg”> <font style=”font-family: ‘Trebuchet MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”2″>Dark Avengers continues to keep going strong as a solid monthly read. Never really had a huge attachment to him.&nbsp;<br><br>And, then Geoff Johns does what he does for nearly every friggin’ DCU Character, and made me like Barry Allen. Flash Rebirth has been as much about making Barry Allen into an accessible, modern 21st century character as it has been about the actual in-continuity return of the character. Johns has been breathing new life into Barry, and since Barry’s been dead pretty much since before the modern style of storytelling that’s the mainstay in comics these days came around, he’s got pretty much a blank slate to play with.&nbsp;<br><br>But, anyways, enough about all that.. Flash Rebirth has been awesome, the story’s been great, the art’s been incredible.. we love it. While we’re not expecting a Spidey death, we do expect big universe-shaking ramifications that make this one-shot a very special DARK REIGN THE LIST chapter.&nbsp;<br><br>Click&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaOFbx8R2yD2zYovJonKCAfcWqoB-JbJ36DyHORXYY9s6RHK9qkGPqQhv8dstNiau23tUg3qa59Q2vDa3-mthkwrF-w1ZOcY9Ql6nazFT6UeXwFRMO1CpGyKn4hgNNL7VhB7WcP29gj_OYS1Roc7RnijYnmgMy1a_oG2-HNBx6cMBaua4knjIElA==” shape=”rect”>here</a>&nbsp;to check out the preview of&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaOFbx8R2yD2zYovJonKCAfcWqoB-JbJ36DyHORXYY9s6RHK9qkGPqQhv8dstNiau23tUg3qa59Q2vDa3-mthkwrF-w1ZOcY9Ql6nazFT6UeXwFRMO1CpGyKn4hgNNL7VhB7WcP29gj_OYS1Roc7RnijYnmgMy1a_oG2-HNBx6cMBaua4knjIElA==” shape=”rect”>DARK REIGN THE LIST AMAZING SPIDER-MAN *DARK REING THE LIST PT 8*</a><br><br><font style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” size=”4″><a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajaaeT_SRbdQ1COwtWRCP8xBFYDkQb0xUzswe62-enXJr1hgr6XsoxN_8sAHmAVWy2PHeVOTaPH0pruvXzKickWdlaZ1a4jBIvu9pBiigXNFq9jBhbIFYz_Mw==” shape=”rect”>SPIDER-WOMAN #3</a>&nbsp;- THE BEST TITLE YOU’RE NOT READING! This series has one of the best teams in comics working on it, with Bendis &amp; Maleev (who did what’s in my opinion one of the best all-time Daredevil runs), and trust us, it’s GOOD. We know, we know, skrulls are played out, but the skrulls really play a VERY VERY minor role in this. It’s more about Jessica Drew working as a kind of a government-sponsored bounty hunter that tracks down aliens in hiding (NOT JUST SKRULLS!).&nbsp;<br><br>The writing is 100% on-point, and the artwork is PERFECT for the series. I really have no idea what to expect as the premise sounds so ridiculous, and over-the-top… that really, anything can happen. It has a very Steampunk Adventures of Watson and Holmes kind of thing going on, that I think is pretty damn cool.<br><br>Click&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCawkWxmHw677GqHvhEnz5bAAf2JwF7yOeHCE4GHo5T8dy3KZ8ed7o146KVSUKMjxoGCVbKLyQ_JFZDH9_aDJ64yLedPjZTohCw=” shape=”rect”>here</a>&nbsp;to check out a preview of&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCawkWxmHw677GqHvhEnz5bAAf2JwF7yOeHCE4GHo5T8dy3KZ8ed7o146KVSUKMjxoGCVbKLyQ_JFZDH9_aDJ64yLedPjZTohCw=” shape=”rect”>VICTORIAN UNDEAD #1</a><br><br><font style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; ” size=”4″>TRANSFORMERS #1 – BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES FEATURING G1-ERA TRANSFORMERS!<br><br></font></font> <IMG SRC=”http://www.comicbookresources.com/assets/images/articles/1253064079.jpg”> <font style=”font-family: ‘Trebuchet MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”2″>Finally! An ongoing Transformers series! And it’s featuring all of the characters that we love and grew up with here at Third Eye. Seriously though, lets face it, if you grew up in the ’80s, you’ve got a fondness for Transformers, or GI JOE, or both. And, while series like Maximum Dinobots and All Hail Megatron have been good, solid reads, the non-stop random mini-series, one-shots, and so forth have lacked consistency.&nbsp;<br><br>So it’s a welcome change to see IDW rolling out an ongoing Transformers comic finally. And it’s everything you’d want out of a good TF comic… good art, a writer who knows the characters well , and an overall direction for the characters.<br><br><font style=”font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”4″>THE AUTHORITY.. IS NOW GOOD AGAIN! CHECK OUT THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR THIS WEEK!</font><br> <IMG SRC=”http://www.dccomics.com/media/product/1/3/13443_400×600.jpg”> <br>Man, the Authority was one of my favorite books when I was a teenager. This is back when Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch first kicked it off, and then Mark Millar and Frank Quitely took it over. I mean, after those two creative teams left, it never really was quite the same. Dan Abnett did some pretty cool work on it, and Brubaker had a nice little run, but nothing ever matched the level of those first two runs.&nbsp;<br><br>If you haven’t already read the original Authority stuff, I recommend snagging AUTHORITY RELENTLESS (volume 1), AUTHORITY UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT (volume 2), and AUTHORITY TRANSFER OF POWER. Gritty, realistic, and sometimes violent as hell, the Authority took the perfect balance of social issues, politics, and bigger than life spaceships crashing into city spires action, and made it into one crazy awesome series.<br><br>The last real glimmer of hope I had for the Authority was when Grant Morrison and Gene Ha were going to do a run on the series. They only did two issues, and then the book kind of was left in limbo. The plot? The Authority crosses dimensions, and ends up in OUR world, our physical world, where they’re just comic books. There’s a very surreal moment where a couple members of the team are in a comic shop, looking at a copy of the Relentless graphic novel.&nbsp;<br><br>And of course, with them coming into our world, it means that bad mojo is happening on our planet. Now, of course, these ideas were explored later in more detail with books like 1985, but either way, we’re excited to see the Authority back.&nbsp;<br><br>Wildstorm has reissued the first two issues in a collected comic called THE AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER, that’s the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR 1 and 2, for only $2.99. And, now the series is being finished with Grant Morrison’s blessing by the very talented KEITH GIFFEN (he made the Justice League totally awesome way back in the day, and has since done some crazy good stuff like 52, ANNIHILATION, and more). Issue #3 ships this week, and we still have plenty of the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER available for you to catch up with.&nbsp;<br><br>Click&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUQlDSQZfQB_1i1D31pSCgczP6awHYRJcA8Cs1UDmnFedFKKnYtDQCkIw-1bBKHrAIXYvYEQrzEyv” shape=”rect”>here</a>&nbsp;to read more about the&nbsp;<a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCbvnQeO2-VeUQlDSQZfQB_1i1D31pSCgczP6awHYRJcA8Cs1UDmnFedFKKnYtDQCkIw-1bBKHrAIXYvYEQrzEyv” shape=”rect”>AUTHORITY LOST YEAR!</a><br><br><font style=”font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”4″><a style=”color: rgb(42, 93, 176); text-decoration: none; ” target=”_blank” href=”http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102828465246&amp;s=0&amp;e=001_IRQnbNgzrETzEiCz-WOJyx6J7706dnQJ03WgrwbQ2ZVjtw0QtwZVi2bgWDzHajatel_dY3vTCawkWxmHw677GqHvhEnz5bAAf2JwF7yOeHCE4GHo5T8d1u8ZVRrv9icjkigAR-kQLjHifdipIY1NgRmm9oxcROXVlwmIDaDVrw=” shape=”rect”>VIKING #4</a>&nbsp;DELIVERS MORE OF THAT GOODFELLAS MEETS THE 9TH CENTURY MAYHEM THAT WE’VE COME TO LOVE THIS WEDNESDAY!<br> <IMG SRC=”http://www.comicbookresources.com/assets/images/articles/1254516797.jpg”> <br></font><font style=”font-family: ‘Comic Sans MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; ” size=”4″><font size=”2″><span style=”font-family: ‘Trebuchet MS’, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; “>It’s been a while since issue #3, but we’re just as pumped for the new issue of VIKING, especially after how awesome the third one was. Third Eye Newsflash: “HISTORY IS MADE IN DARK REIGN THE LIST PUNISHER ONE-SHOT” or “Ten Reasons Why You Need To Read Rick Remender’s Punisher”

The Punisher – DISMEMBERED – in DARK REIGN THE LIST PUNISHER

You know, the hype machines of the big publishers are so good at what they do these days that it’s really hard to be surprised by something in comics. Usually there’s hints of “This issue is going to be BIG”,  or “The landmark issue of a lifetime!”  in the solicits, and sometimes they ring true, but sometimes they do not. Well, this little Punisher one-shot, which promised to be an important chapter, but got very little hype (especially considering it had the talents of the incredible JOHN ROMITA JR onboard) blew us away this week. Now, this whole article is very spoiler-heavy, but then again, so was the headline… but hey, it’s the internet… what’d you expect? :)

Anyways, the general scoop here is that Norman Osborn has dispatched the Dark Avengers to deal with Frank Castle. And, Daken (known as Dark Wolverine) and the Punisher have one of the most brutal comic book throwdowns we’ve seen in ages.  I mean, this is a knives to the head, throats being cut, lips being bit off slobberknocker, folks. And, then, comes one of the most intense scenes I’ve seen in a mainstream 616 Marvel Comics… Daken cuts the Punisher’s head off. One slice. And, then his torso, and arms… and lets just say the Punisher is left lying as a messy, wet pile of body parts.

Now, of course, this leads into a very big storyline that could only be called……

Frankencastle - Reserve Your Copy Now!

Frankencastle - Reserve Your Copy Now!

We know what you’re thinking. Frankencastle? Really? But, lets face it, if an idea is this ridiculous, then it might just work. And, I’ll be the first to admit, when they originally announced Marvel Zombies … I thought it was the dumbest thing I’d ever heard, and said it was going to bomb. I turned out to be pretty damn wrong. After reading the prelude to FRANKENCASTLE, I honestly think that the FRANKENCASTLE storyline is going to rule. It starts in PUNISHER #11, so, be sure to reserve your copy here at Third Eye!

And, hey, this entire run of the new PUNISHER series by Rick Remender has been AWESOME. The first arc is killer, and the second arc was pretty damn good too. Combine that with Tony Moore (Fear Agent, Walking Dead) coming on for the art chores, and we’ve got some cool stuff in store for us.

Looking to catch up on Remender’s run?  Well, we currently have ALL of the back issues still in stock here at Third Eye, although many of these are now out of print, and if you’re looking to catch up… we’d recommend doing it quick, cause after the events of the one-shot this week, lots of people are going to be going back for these books.

Or, you can grab the trade paperback collecting the first story arc here at Third Eye as well.
