gl53
While BRIGHTEST DAY officially kicked off last week in BRIGHTEST DAY #0 (still in stock here at Third Eye!), it’s Green Lantern #53 that we’re really looking forward to seeing. This issue here pretty much serves as not just the beginning of BRIGHTEST DAY for Hal and the rest of the new Guardians, but also an almost epilogue for BLACKEST NIGHT.

We almost knew this was coming after seeing how things played out in Blackest Night 6,7, and 8, but, this week’s Green Lantern #53 makes it official: These are the New Guardians. And, now it’s going to be very intriguing to see where things are going to be heading for Hal, Atrocitus, Sinestro, Larfleeze, and company now that they actually have to work together and reach an agreement if their future endeavors as The Guardians are going to succeed.

Almost a year ago this week, DCU delivered GREEN LANTERN #43, which was the Prologue to BLACKEST NIGHT. It still remains (alongside issues 50, and 52) as one of the most important issues of Green Lantern to date; exploring the back-story of Blackest Night baddie, BLACKHAND, and setting up the BLACKEST NIGHT perfectly. We have a feeling that this week’s GREEN LANTERN #53 is going to have the same effect. A crucially important turning point for not just Green Lantern in regards to BRIGHTEST DAY, but for the Green Lantern title overall. There were some unanswered questions at the end of BLACKEST NIGHT #8, especially in regards to the Indigo Tribe, and we cannot wait to see how they’re answered in the scheme of things with GREEN LANTERN and BRIGHTEST DAY.

For those of you who may just be jumping onto things with the launch of BRIGHTEST DAY, make sure you check out GL #53 as well. While all the tie-ins for large storylines are not integral, the Green Lantern title, written by Geoff Johns (the man masterminding this whole thing) is an integral piece of the storyline, and has proven to be just as important as the core title itself (i.e BLACKEST NIGHT, and now, BRIGHTEST DAY). Not to mention that Green Lantern is just a DAMN GOOD book. You’ve got the writing of Geoff Johns, who’s probably one of the top three best superhero writers working today, and then the killer artwork of Doug Mahnke, who is extremely underrated as an artist, in our opinion. This book has been rocking and rolling for almost three years now, ever since things really kicked off with the Sinestro Corp Wars, and it’s just been getting better and better ever since. If you haven’t ever picked up an issue of GL before, GL #53 is a perfect spot to jump in, and start finding out why this series rules.

And, ontop of all this… we’re gonna have more Green Rings to give out this week, and each issue of GREEN LANTERN #53 comes with a GL ring! :)

BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 4 ACTION FIGURES AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

bnser44
And, then, who could have a killer Green Lantern Wednesday without a nice new batch of BLACKEST NIGHT action figures? This has probably been the hottest line of action figures DC Direct has done in quite some time, and the sculpts on these figures are magnificent. Make sure you get your’s quick, ’cause they go out of production fast, and DC Direct is kinda slow to restock! We’ll have plenty in stock this Wednesday, so grab yourself your favorites, or a whole set!

BLACKEST NIGHT: DIRECTOR’S CUT ONE-SHOT EXPLORES THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES OF LAST YEAR’S BIGGEST COMICS EVENT! TONS OF EASTER EGGS, WRITER AND ARTIST COMMENTARY, and MANY “DELETED” SCENES
blackestnightdirectorscut
This 80-page one-shot looks pretty cool, and is sure to appeal to those of you who’re like me, and love to dig beneath the surface of the story to see the process and how we got to the finished product. This one-shot delivers several hidden Easter eggs, as well as the meanings behind some of the more cryptic moments of BLACKEST NIGHT. Plus, from what we read, there’s several “deleted scenes” that did not make it into the book, as well as never-before-seen character designs. Sounds pretty cool, and if last year’s Final Crisis Director’s Cut was any indication with it’s commentary by Morrison, a very cool insight into the mind of series writer, GEOFF JOHNS.

BRIGHTEST DAY SHINES ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE IN JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #44 *BRIGHTEST DAY TIE-IN*
jla44
In the aftermath of BLACKEST NIGHT, the brand new line-up of the JUSTICE LEAGUE is getting a big dose of sunburn courtesy of BRIGHTEST DAY. It looks like James Robinson and Mark Bagley are going to be pairing up the JLA with the JSA, as one of the characters featured in BRIGHTEST DAY ends up joining the JLA. The big tease though is who the mysterious villain (and we’re wondering just who else has returned from the dead in this whole thing…) that DC is teasing to reveal at the end of this issue, and which character will switch from JLA to JSA or vice versa?

We’re pumped for this tie-in, not just ’cause we’re stoked on everything BRIGHTEST DAY at the moment, but because it’s James Robinson doing the JSA again, and with his long history with the JSA, including the critically acclaimed “JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE” storyline, it’ll be cool to see him mix his old favorites with his current team of Justice Leaguers. Plus, I think the tease about who’s coming back from Blackest Night is pretty obvious by the cover, but the mysterious villain thing has my curiosity piqued. I mean, if there’s a buncha dead baddies running around recently returned… just which one is going to be quick to target the JUSTICE LEAGUE?

ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! BUY YOUR’S THIS WEEK, AND GET A FULL SET OF LANTERN RINGS, THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM!
glrebirthabsolute
If there’s anything that deserves DC’s prestigious “ABSOLUTE” treatment, it’s Geoff Johns’s now classic revival of Hal Jordan in GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH. This six issue limited series took a character that had been long-forgotten by many, and breathed fresh new life into him. More importantly, it was the ground floor for Geoff Johns’s road to building the DC Universe into the exciting and interesting place it is now today. The ABSOLUTE collections are always gorgeous, and this one is no exception, a giant over-sized hardcover that collects the full GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH mini-series, the first issue of the Green Lantern ongoing series, the preview story from Wizard Magazine, and then a very cool one-shot story from GREEN LANTERN SECRET FILES 2005, which features the incredible artwork of DARWYN COOKE.

And, like all ABSOLUTE-format books, this one is over-sized, so you can see Ethan Van Sciver’s gorgeous artwork bigger than life.

We still have a very limited quantity of power rings left over from last winter’s free ring promotion, and when you pick up your copy of Green Lantern Rebirth this week, you’ll receive a free full set of Lantern power rings, excluding the white ring which has not been released yet.

We’re going to have limited quantities of this hardcover available, so if you’re set on grabbing one, please get in touch with us about holding you a copy

CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #1 KICKS OFF THE SEQUEL TO THE MOST DISTURBING SURVIVAL HORROR STORY WE’VE EVER READ… THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL, FOR SURE, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THIS ONE OUT WEDNESDAY! PLUS, MORE CROSSED TRADE PAPERBACKS BACK IN STOCK!
crossedfv1
All right, by now, many of you have read the trade paperback collection of CROSSED that came out last week. And, by now, you too, are hooked like I have been, on the insanely awesome, yet sickeningly disturbing survival horror story of CROSSED. Lets face it, Garth Ennis rocked it out hardcore, and totally set the tone for extreme horror in comics. CROSSED was the equivalent of the first Napalm Death album. We hadn’t seen anything that hard-hitting before, and it’s completely raised the bar for many. And, this is why we cannot wait to read the sequel which begins this Wednesday. The fact that David Lapham is handling this one has us even more stoked, because let me tell you, if there’s one thing that NEEDS to be reprinted it’s Lapham’s epic ’90s crime comic series, STRAY BULLETS. Some of the most gritty, nihilistic modern-day noir you’d ever want to read. And, it was all before the big crime comics explosion of the mid-2000s. But, back to CROSSED.

If the first series of CROSSED was the ground-breaking moment, and the first burst of craziness, then this sequel is sure to be even more intense. Why? Well, lets be honest, you can’t follow up something like CROSSED and not be prepared to take it up a few notches. After having read the preview of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES, I am so stoked, it’s not even funny.

Now, some of you might be wondering… well, I haven’t read the first run of CROSSED yet, should I? Honestly, from what Lapham has said in interviews, this new story is a whole new cast of characters in a different corner of the CROSSED-Universe, meaning that it’s a fresh, new story. All you need to know is that the CROSSED are evil, sadistic maniacs infected by a disease that reduces them to their most sinister, and most sadistic desires. However, they are not zombies, in fact, they can still think, plot, and plan, just like humans, the only difference: they have no moral compass, they exist to destroy. So, imagine a zombie outbreak where the zombies could strategically position themselves, flood people out of their shelter, and then gun them down. Imagine jet planes being flown by zombies, and human bodies being dropped from them as live ammo. That’s CROSSED. The most insane, over-the-top survival horror comic you’re ever gonna read.

However, while CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES is a nice fresh jumping in spot… YOU HAVE GOTTA pick up the CROSSED trade paperback, and find out what all the fuss is about. Folks, this book was for real, one of the most sickeningly, gratuitously fun reads I’ve had in a while. Garth Ennis gave us nine chilling issues of survival horror, and I guarantee you: nothing you’ve read before stands up to CROSSED in terms of the whole “HOLY CRAP” factor.

Now, before you go and just assume I’m some nutjob who’s easily entertained by creative means of death and destruction, let me also say that the thing that made CROSSED so compelling was how well written the story was. I mean, it’s Ennis, and like he normally does, he shows why he’s the master of managing to blend the right amount of shock-your-system disgust with compelling character-driven story to make one heck of a good read. The fact that David Lapham is on board for this second one has got me also confident it’s going to be a good read, because as I had said before, Lapham’s work on Stray Bullets is some of the best comic stuff I’ve ever read. It’s really criminal there’s no trade paperbacks of that stuff in print. However, we feel that we’re gonna get to see some raw and nasty awesomeness from Mr. Lapham with this new CROSSED series.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25 KICKS OFF THE THANOS IMPERATIVE THIS WEDNESDAY! THE RETURN OF THANOS HAS BEGUN!
gog25
Who doesn’t love THANOS? I mean, many of you like, I’m sure, remember the epic sense of wow and wonder that the INFINITY GAUNTLET delivered, and while we thought it was awesome how the infamous titan went out in ANNIHILATION at the hands of DRAX THE DESTROYER, we knew he’d be back. Thanos is just too cool of a villain to put to rest for good, and now, this week, beginning in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #25, the THANOS IMPERATIVE brings the Mad Titan center stage.

Now, why are we so pumped about this? Well, not only is it the big return of Thanos, but it’s also a Thanos story that’s being written by the incredible duo of Abnett and Lanning. These are the guys responsible for reminding me just how cool Marvel’s cosmic characters could be, and ever since their first kick-off with ANNIHILATION, they have turned the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe into something that is must-read material. Whether it’s the trippy events of REALM OF KINGS, or the consistently stellar storylines that have been running through Guardians of the Galaxy (one of Marvels most under-rated books) and Nova, Abnett and Lanning have really done a fantastic job of making the Marvel Cosmos a fun place to be. And, now, they’re being handed one of the coolest Marvel cosmic baddies ever, and we cannot wait to see their approach.

The prologue to the THANOS IMPERATIVE begins here, and all the questions of how he returned, and why he’s back are going to start being answered here in Guardians of the Galaxy #25. PLUS, just what does this all mean for the galaxy’s motley crew of universal protectors?

This one’s gonna be a great read, and we cannot wait to get our hands on it this Wednesday.

BRIAN WOOD KICKS OFF DV8: GODS AND MONSTERS #1 THIS WEDNESDAY! THE TALENTED WRITER OF “DEMO”, “NORTHLANDERS” and “DMZ” WRITES HIS DREAM STORY AND MAKES WILDSTORM COOL AGAIN. THINK BRIAN WOOD MEETS “LORD OF THE FLIES”
dv81
First off, folks, it comes as a surprise to us too that this is Brian Wood’s dream book, but, hey, the man writes some of the best comics on the stands, and after reading the advance of this first issue: IT’S FREAKIN’ AWESOME. First off, why are we surprised? Well, DV8 is a ’90s superhero book that’s set in the Wildstorm universe, and it hasn’t really been seen or heard of in a very long time. However, Wood apparently has been trying to write this story for years, and now he’s finally gotten his chance.

DV8: Gods and Monsters is an eight-issue mini-series with the killer art of Rebekah Isaacs, and serves as a brand new story for people who’ve never read a Wildstorm book before in their life. The book stars the DV8 characters who made their debut in the original series that Warren Ellis did during the mid-90s, which in my opinion, was ahead of it’s time in how it depicted the lives of warped, selfish, and ultra-violent super-powered adolescents who looked at saving the world as a close second place to their own selfish desires.

Wood’s approach looks to be much more in tune with the kind of work that’s really made him into a must-read creator, whether it be the high-octane action/political thrills of DMZ, or the introspective character-driven stories of DEMO, this series seems to bring together a perfect marriage of the two.

The story looks to be focusing on a team of super-powered 20-somethings who’re extremely dysfunctional, and maintain very messed-up relationships with one another. Wood decides to take these damaged, and sometimes purely unlikable characters and givet hem something incredible and epic to grapple with, and see how it changes them as individuals.

While I don’t want to drop spoilers on this one, I’ll give you a rundown of how things kick off.. the kids wake up to find themselves, literally falling from the sky into the middle of a prehistoric world. We kind of get the impression that the DV8 gang has been “on ice” for an unknown amount of time, and are now thrown into this situation. The real interesting dynamic is how eight brightly colored superhumans literally falling from the heavens affects a primitive society. And, that’s where the title comes from: Gods and Monsters.

All in all, folks, whether you’re a fan of cutting edge superhero stuff that kind of runs along the spirit of NO HERO, or SUPERGOD, or if you’re into the heady stuff that runs through DMZ, and DEMO, you should give this one a try. I think this may be up there as one of my favorites of the week, and it could really give the Wildstorm universe that much needed shot in the arm it’s been needing for quite some time.

As for whether or not you need any prior knowledge of the DV8 crew… no. This is a fresh story with a fresh start, and throws you right into the thick of things.

SIEGE: SPIDER-MAN ONE-SHOT – SPIDEY AND DARK AVENGER VENOM GO HEAD TO HEAD IN THE RUBBLE OF ASGARD!

siegespidey
Last week’s SIEGE one-shots really impressed the heck out of me. I really dug all three of them, especially the Captain America and the Loki. It’s so hard nowadays to tell during these big events which tie-ins are going to be a good read, and which aren’t, but I’m pretty happy to say that all three from last week were killer reads. I just sat down and read through the SIEGE: SPIDER-MAN coming out this Wednesday, and I’ll have to admit: this one is pretty damn cool too.

First off, don’t expect anything that’s over-the-top in terms of revelations or reveals. But, what you do get is probably one of the coolest, most solid one-off Spider-man stories I’ve seen in quite some time. The whole issue is pretty much a giant brawl between Spidey and the current incarnation of Venom, which we’ve all been waiting to see for quite some time. Does it deliver? Folks, does it ever. Sometimes you just want to see the good guys hit things, and Spidey does a whole lot of that. The writing’s solid, the art is good, and it helps flesh out the wallcrawler’s place in the grand scheme of things in regards to SIEGE.

STEPHEN KING’S AMERICAN VAMPIRE #2 FOLLOWS UP THE FIRST ISSUE OF THIS KILLER NEW VERTIGO SERIES! IF YOU HAVEN’T CHECKED THIS ONE OUT YET, YOU NEED TO!

amvampire2
Dude, I was totally impressed with the first issue of the new Vertigo series, AMERICAN VAMPIRE. I mean, first off, there’s the whole you know sense of awesomeness that you get from watching the FIRST, ORIGINAL COMIC WORK of the Master of the Macabre, Stephen King, unfold before your eyes. But, I’ve gotta tell you guys: co-writer Scott Snyder delivered big-time on this one as well. And, after our interview with Snyder about the future of AMERICAN VAMPIRE, I could not be more stoked to see where this story is going. American Vampire kind of channels the feel of hard-hitting, gritty dust and blood Vampire tales like NEAR DARK, and combines them with the old spooky mystique of classics like SALEM’S LOT. The artwork, and the writing on the first issue was sharp, with dialogue that you just pulled you in, strong characterization, and a very nice sense of pacing.

If you haven’t read AMERICAN VAMPIRE yet, here’s the scoop: The story of AMERICAN VAMPIRE seems to be centered around an Old West outlaw by the name of Skinner Sweet. In the first issue, we see two narratives that kind of wrap together, one set in the ’20s during the heyday of Hollywood, and the other telling us the origin story of America’s first Vampire, outlaw Skinner Sweet. From the vibe we got of the first issue, it looks like this series is going to explore not just the motivations of the O.G American bloodsucker, Skinner Sweet, but the whole lineage of Vampires in America. It’s a very cool read that manages to tell a very solid period piece without feeling old-fashioned, or dated. This one definitely lives up to the hype, and if you want a compelling horror story, or just a damn good vampire story… then you need to read this one. It’s fantastic.

This Wednesday, we’ll be seeing the release of AMERICAN VAMPIRE #2, and we’re pumped to see where the story of Pearl, Skinner, and the rest is heading. Heck, we’re only one issue into this thing, and I’m already planning to put it right near the top of my “To-Read” pile this week.

If you missed issue #1, no need to fear, we’ve got plenty in stock to get you caught up this Wednesday!

X-MEN SECOND COMING CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN X-MEN LEGACY #235 *X-MEN SECOND COMING PT 4*and X-FACTOR #204 *X-MEN SECOND COMING: REVELATIONS*
xmenlegacy235
Another killer dose of the hottest X-MEN crossover since MESSIAH COMPLEX arrives this Wednesday in the pages of X-MEN: LEGACY #235. Man, how long has it been since the X-MEN were this cool? I couldn’t tell you, but, folks, this storyline has been killer. It’s really gotten back to the roots of the X-MEN, and gets better with each installment. The whole scoop on this one is Hope, the first and last mutant baby born since the events of M-DAY (check out HOUSE OF M trade paperback, and the DECIMATION trade paperbacks) has returned from the future with Cable, and wouldn’t you know? All the X-Men’s old human anti-mutant extremist villains have combined forces to exterminate Hope. So, Cameron Hodge, Bolliver Trask, Bastion, and so on and so forth are all out for blood.

This week, the action continues in X-MEN: SECOND COMING CHAPTER 4, where we see the X-MEN that’ve been on the trail of Hope and Cable have lost a team-mate, and their trail has gone cold. And, that’s where Rogue comes into the picture. When I was a youngin’ reading X-MEN, I loved Rogue’s character, but after about 15 years of Rogue/Gambit over-dose.. I got pretty sick of her. It looks like in this issue we’re gonna see her come back into her own as a strong, and interesting character, and I’ll admit: I’m pretty pumped about that.

Click herefor a preview of X-MEN LEGACY #235 *X-MEN SECOND COMING PT 4*

X-FACTOR #204 *X-MEN SECOND COMING: REVELATIONS TIE-IN* BOLLIVER TRASK PUTS OUT THE HIT ON X-FACTOR!
xfactor204
Now, let it be said: X-FACTOR is one of the best X-Books you’re not reading. There’s just something so unique, and fresh about Peter David’s approach to these characters that has really turned this book into a sleeper hit here at Third Eye. And, this week, you may get a chance to sample that in the pages of X-FACTOR #204, which ties into X-MEN: SECOND COMING as one of the “Revelations” tie-ins. While this issue is not an actual chapter of the storyline, it does feature events that are taking place on the outskirts of what’s going on, and it looks like we’re going to see Bolivar Trask intent on one mission: Kill every member of X-FACTOR. How’s he plan to do that? He’s gonna hire the team and send ‘em into a surefire death-trap.

ARE YOU READING GRANT MORRISON’S JOE THE BARBARIAN? IF NOT, THEN REMEDY THAT THIS WEDNESDAY, AND CHECK OUT THIS FANTASTIC NEW SERIES! A TRUE URBAN FANTASY TALE THAT HAS US HOOKED HARD HERE AT THIRD EYE! JOE THE BARBARIAN #4 HITS THIS WEEK!
joethebarbarian4
Grant Morrison’s limited series which takes a shy, diabetic teenager and throws him head first into a trippy realm where all of his action figures have come to life, and live within a world of their own making, has had us really hooked since it’s launch. While we felt the first issue was a little slow, it was when we got into issue #2 that we knew Morrison was onto something here. Each issue seems to be building towards a much larger picture than what we had assumed at the start of the series. In last month’s issue #3, we learned that there’s a real importance to this new world Joe’s stumbled upon, and had a very cool Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz, albeit slightly darker, feel to it.

In issue #4, it looks like the adventure quotient of the story is gonna be kicking up big time, as the mysteries of the Iron Kingdom and it’s relationship to Joe’s real world are finally revealed. And, it also looks like Joe’s going to get a new traveling companion thrown into the mix for the adventurer and his rat friend’s voyage into Ultimate Darkness.

Joe the Barbarian has been a stellar read since issue #1, and we highly recommend it. Sean Murphy’s art brings Morrison’s crazy, and tripy world to life in so many ways. And, I mean, there’s just a real “cool” factor about reading what is basically a high-adventure fantasy story that’s set in a mythical world composed of action figures, and toys. The fact that artist Sean Murphy seems to be deliberately keeping the look and feel of the toys as ’80s favorites, is very cool. When you see Optimus Prime or Snake-Eyes lurking in the background, or the Captain Picard-like character giving Joe a word of advice… it’s just very cool stuff.

If you’ve missed the prior 3 issues, don’t sweat it, we’ve got all three in stock, and it’s easy to get caught up.

PLUS, issue #1 is only a buck!

RADICAL COMICS’S HOTWIRE: REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD by WARREN ELLIS & STEVE PUGH AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY IN TRADE PAPERBACK! CYBERPUNK BLADE RUNNER MEETS GHOST BUSTERS AWESOMENESS COURTESY OF MR. WARREN ELLIS!

hotwiretpb
Here’s a trade paperback hitting this week that I’d call a sure-fire must read. Hotwire by Warren Ellis and Steve Pugh launched last year, and was one of the shining lights in up-and-coming publisher Radical’s line-up. The story centers around Detective Hotwire, who’s what people in this dystopian Blade Runner-ish future call a Detective Exorcist, and her plight to control the unruly spirits of the dead. Imagine this: ghosts are acknowledged and proven as scientific fact, and now there’s no room in the afterlife for them, so they roam the world, and it’s up to the authorities to make sure these spirits and poltergeists don’t interfere too much with everybody’s day to day.

And, this is where Alice Hotwire comes into play, she’s the best there is at reining in the “Blue Lights”, which’re what the dead are called as they roam mindlessly. However, now they’re being turned into weapons of mass destruction, and she’s the only person who can save the city from a total meltdown. This one played out like a very cool, cyberpunk kinda ghostbusters story, and we highly recommend it, especially if you’re an Ellis fan. And, Pugh’s artwork is INCREDIBLE.

In addition to the limited series, this trade paperback includes creator notes, character designs, and even some newly remastered tales from Alice Hotwire’s past, featuring some never-before-seen Warren Ellis stuff.

THE DOOMWAR CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY AS THE FANTASTIC FOUR JOIN THE FRAY IN DOOMWAR #3!
doomwar3
Amidst the Sieges, and the Second Comings, there’s a pretty killer little event that’s taking place in a more quiet corner of the Marvel Universe, and that’s the DOOMWAR. This one has a much more old-school (but in a good way), tons of good guys going head to head with one bad guy kinda vibe, and it’s really been a lot of fun.

Simply put, the Black Panther is on a mission to not just rescue Storm from Doom, but take Wakanda back from Doom, and he’s enlisted the forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and even Deadpool to help him do so. While it’s unclear whether the events of DOOMWAR are set before or after SECOND COMING/SIEGE (we’re assuming that it’s during SIEGE, but before SECOND COMING), the story has been pretty killer so far. And, really, it’s all because it’s one whole storyline focusing on Dr. freakin’ Doom! I mean, c’mon… we know we just went zany over Thanos, but we like Doom even more than Thanos when it comes to bad guys, and it’s great to finally see an event where he’s getting center-stage.

If you missed issues #1 or #2 of DOOMWAR, don’t worry, we still have plenty in stock to catch you up.

MAGDALENA #1 KICKS OFF A NEW TOP COW ONGOING SERIES FOR THIS LONG-TIME FAN-FAVORITE TOP COW CHARACTER! AND IT ACTUALLY LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. magd1
Now, I have to be honest. I’ve never been a big TOP COW fan. I LOVED WANTED, and whatever KIRKMAN dishes out under the Pilot Season imprint, I’m all over. I even enjoyed the Cyberforce/Hunter Killer mini from last year, because Kenneth Rocafort’s awesome artwork. However, I’ve just never really been a big fan of many of TOP COW’s characters. Don’t get me wrong, I loved what Garth Ennis did on the early DARKNESS stuff, but you know, where the company went in later years, just wasn’t my thing.

However, I know a lot of people do dig TOP COW, and I really have an appreciation for some of the talented artists they’ve got working for ‘em, so it was with some curiosity that I decided to scope out the preview of the first issue of the new MAGDALENA ongoing series, and folks, it’s pretty damn cool. If you’re a TOP COW fan, you’re gonna love it, but even if you’re like me, and haven’t really dipped your toe in their “universe”-centric books in a while, you should give this one a peek. The preview reads like a very smooth, well-done vatican conspiracy kinda thing meets Assassin’s Creed action and espionage. And, I REALLY dig the artwork, but that’s really nothing new for TOP COW, because they always have some of the best artists working on their books.

All in all, I think that this one is worth giving a shot, especially if you’re into religious conspiracy stories, or kind of ultra-violent Tomb Raider-esque fun.

Plus, I have to admit, seeing that old logo on the top of the cover has gotten me nostalgic.

MARK MILLAR (KICK-ASS, NEMESIS, OLD MAN LOGAN) WRAPS UP HIS FIRST ARC OF ULTIMATE AVENGERS THIS WEDNESDAY IN ULTIMATE AVENGERS #6
ULTIMATEAVENGERS6
You know, Mark Millar can do no wrong, in my opinion. The man just knows how to write one hell of an entertaining comic, and his current run on the ULTIMATES with ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS has been fantastic. He’s really kinda pulled the ULTIMATES up from where they’d fallen after the very disappointing ULTIMATES 3. His unique take, and twist on the world of the AVENGERS as seen through the guise of the Ultimate universe is fantastic, and this run, which has focused on the reveal of Steve Roger’s illegitimate son growing up to be the Ultimate Red Skull has had us on the edge of our seats the entire time.

This week, Millar wraps up the conclusion in typical epic Millar fashion, bringing us a huge showdown between Captain America and the Red Skull, and the Avengers need to get there from keeping these two from destroying the entire world in the process.

If you haven’t yet read ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS, but have been meaning to, we’ve got issues 1-5 well-stocked here at the shop, so it’s easy enough to get caught up. If you’re looking for a tight, self-contained, and well-told Avengers story with a definite edge to it (I mean, c’mon, this is being written by the guy who did KICK-ASS and OLD MAN LOGAN), then give ULTIMATE AVENGERS a shot.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING RISE OF THE ELDRAZI IN STOCK AT THIRD EYE THIS FRIDAY!

STRAIGHT FROM THE PAGES OF THOR, LADY SIF GETS HER OWN ONE-SHOT WITH SIF #1 THIS WEDNESDAY! PLUS.. BETA RAY BILL!? YES!
sif1
This one looks pretty kick-ass, but that might just be because I’ve really become a big Thor fan over the last few years. This one-shot gives us the tale of Sif, an Asgardian warrior who craved the blood of her enemies, and how she has not been the same since Loki possessed her body. This one-shot features Sif and Beta Ray Bill fighting their way forward as she tires to reclaim her former glory.

My thoughts? Looks pretty cool, the preview reads well, and while I’m not super familiar with the creative team, the art is killer. But, c’mon, Sif is a cool character, and it’s kinda neat to see her getting some spotlight. Plus, I think it’s cool they’re actually addressing the whole Loki taking over her body thing.

WARREN ELLIS’S DO ANYTHING GRAPHIC NOVELLA ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY GIVING US THE RAMBLINGS OF ELLIS AS TOLD THROUGH A ROBOTIC JACK KIRBY HEAD. YES, WE’RE SERIOUS!

doanything
Here’s a cool one. This little slab of awesome, priced only at $5.99, collects the writings and ramblings of critically acclaimed author, WARREN ELLIS, as told through the robotic head of Jack Kirby. Ellis’s thoughts on the comics medium, creating comics, the future of comics, and their past, are all told here, and it’s very compelling stuff for anyone who is a fan of the man’s work. Give it a look this Wednesday, for some truly funny, yet insightful looks at how the comic industry operates.

STAFF PICKS

Steve -  BRIGHTEST DAY #0 = An exciting start for DC’s next big progression of things. It’s got a very cool, ground zero feel to it, where you feel like you’re at the start of something very cool. The balance of major characters with minor is well done, and the writing and art were really sharp. Really excited for more now!

Trish – GEORGE R.R MARTIN’S FEVRE DREAM #1 = I’m not necessarily a big GEORGE R.R MARTIN fan but I really liked this new Avatar book. Bloody, and vicious, it’s got that kind of old school vampire charm to it.

Torma – FLASH #1 = The Flash is officially cool again. Thank you Geoff Johns!

Matt – KILL SHAKESPEARE #1 = I liked this one a lot. It had a real Stuff of Legend / Fables feel to it. The hook is perfect too, Shakespeare’s villainous characters brought to life and seeking to murder Shakespeare? Awesome.

Third Eye Spotlight
ABSOLUTION by Christos Gage & Robert Viacova – courtesy of Avatar Press
“Dexter” meets “ROBOCOP” from the publishers of CROSSED & SUPERGOD
absolution
You know, in the course of the last few years, Avatar has become a mark of quality. And, often, in the thick of the high profile books they have coming out from the likes of Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis, sometimes books will get lost in the shuffle. Absolution is a book that I feel may have gotten lost in the shuffle last year, due to all the hit books that Avatar was releasing. And, that’s a shame, ’cause Absolution is freakin’ AWESOME.

When the #0 issue first came out, I was actually kind of lukewarm on the book. The concept didn’t really hook me right off the bat, and compared to some of the other fare coming out from Avatar at the time (CROSSED, NO HERO), that #0 issue didn’t really knock me over. But, I was wrong. See, the beauty of ABSOLUTION is it takes an issue or two to get going, but once it gets going, it delivers more adrenaline and awesomeness than most books that explore similar concepts.

Lets talk about the hook, first off, the series takes place in a world where super-human police forces have been instituted. Just like normal police officers, these superhuman officers are bound by a code of conduct and ethics. This means they can’t just run out there, and vaporize someone for their crimes. Just like a real officer has to arrest, and bring the criminal in to stand trial, so do they. And, that’s where things get interesting, as the main character of the story, Dusk, who’s superpower is sort of like a reverse of the Invisible Woman’s (in other words he can create matter from a murky, black substance, and use it to conceal himself, create forcefields, or use it offensively to.. well… decapitate a guy. :) ), ANYWAYS, at the start we see Dusk take down a rapist/murderer who ends up sickening him more than anyone he’s ever brought in before. And, when he accidentally lops off the guy’s arm in the process of apprehending him, he realizes that he’d rather let him bleed out than seal up the wound with one of his “duskfields.” And, he does. The guy dies, and Dusk realizes he’s gone down a path that he cannot retreat from.

So, begins John Dusk’s descent into dangerous territory as he kills more, and more bad guys. From this point forward, we’re taken into an ultraviolent world of superhumans, and a quickly blurring line between wrong and right. We watch what happens as Dusk takes actions into his own hands, and this is part of what makes the book stand apart. It makes the reader think. Sure, it’s violent, it’s full of harsh language, and nudity, but underneath it, there’s a very serious moral dilemma that fuels the entire series, and this is part of the appeal.

And, I’m holding back some of the best parts of ABSOLUTION, as I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises. Just trust me, this one’s worth the read.

We have limited quantities of the entire series still in stock, issues #0 to #6, make sure you grab em quick though, ’cause these are out of print, and are going to be difficult to keep in stock until the trade comes out this Fall.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 12/23/09

THE NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA REVEALED INCAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN: WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD ONE-SHOT THIS WEDNESDAY!

This is it, folks… is it going to be Steve Rogers rocking the Captain America duds again, or is it going to be Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier? The question to this, and many other things surrounding the epic, sweeping story that Brubaker has laid out with REBORN are answered this Wednesday.

Now, you’re probably wondering “How come this is coming out before CAPTAIN AMERICA: REBORN #6?” Well, there’s two answers to that. The first is that Marvel has pegged this as a pre-emptive epilogue to REBORN. The other answer is that the incredible art of Bryan Hitch tends to make the man run slow, and REBORN #6 should’ve been out by now. From what Marvel has told us though, reading this issue before Cap Reborn #6 doesn’t mess with the sequence too much.

Anyways, I am very excited about this one, because not only have I been enjoying Brubaker’s REBORN storyline, but his entire run on Captain America in general has been some of the best comic reading on the shelves. So, needless to say, I’m pretty stoked to see how this one follows up, and nears it’s conclusion.

And, ontop of all that… this could possibly be (like it’s no secret) the Return of Steve Rogers as Captain America! If you would’ve told me I’d be pumped about that in 1999, I would’ve been hard-pressed to believe you. While I respect the iconic nature of Cap, and some of the great stories of the past that’ve been told with the character (my personal pre-Civil War Cap story being Mark Waid and Ron Garney’s incredible run on the series), I just never really saw that many stories that stood out with the character. In my opinion, it took the influence of Millar’s characterization of Cap in THE ULTIMATES, and then, his 616-characterization in CIVIL WAR, to really get me into the character. Luckily, right around the same time that CIVIL WAR was happening, a (at the time) unknown writer by the name of Ed Brubaker was spinning some very gritty, hard-nosed espionage-fused stories with Cap. And, I’ve been a fan of the character ever since.

Who Will Wield The Shield is kind of a summing up of the last decade of Captain America stories. And, I hate to admit, that this is probably where the road to the end of Brubaker’s run begins. Although, I could be wrong. Anyways, it looks like we’ll be seeing the big decision made between who will be wearing the mantle of Captain America… Steve Rogers, or Bucky Barnes. The thing that makes this so exciting is that the development of Bucky as a character over the course of the last 50-some issues of Brubaker’s run has been some of the best character development of a comic character I have ever seen. And, to be honest, while I’m excited to see how things play out with Rogers, I really would be sad to see Bucky not be Cap.

And, then of course, there’s those spoiler pages in the back of DARK AVENGERS and NEW AVENGERS ANNUALS from the last couple of weeks… but, are we convinced that’s who it appears to be? And, that all is what it seems? I guess we’ll find out all the answers this week in WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD.

Click here for a preview of CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD one-shot

And, for those of you who haven’t been following Brubaker’s run on Cap, I want to give you the skinny on where it begins, and why it’s been so damn good. He manages to combine elements of old school pulp fiction with a 21st century spin with the feel of old ’70s and ’80s exploitation movies. Brubaker’s Cap run has been a high-quality superhero book with a definite espionage by way of grindhouse kind of feel to it.

Where to start? CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER VOLUME 1 TRADE PAPERBACK – This trade collects the first six issues of Brubaker’s run, and begins the series with a bang by re-introducing the long-thought dead Cap sidekick, Bucky Barnes. Of course, as we learn through the course of the story, Bucky’s history is  not what we thought, and his re-appearance has him as a conflicted, hardened soldier with a mission to kill Steve Rogers. From, there the story follows in CAPTAIN AMERICA WINTER SOLDIER VOLUME 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA RED MENACE 1 & 2, and so on, and so forth.

Why It’s So Good? Brubaker has managed to take the history of the Captain America series, including all of it’s somewhat B Movie-esque supervillains, and fuse it with a modernistic, 21st century espionage-fueled approach that’s had us on the edge of our seats ever since. Brubaker re-introduced Cap’s wholesome teen sidekick, and revealed his history as a cold-blooded black ops killer, then he killed Captain America himself, and put the reformed Bucky in the costume. All the while, he’s effortlessly blended old with new, and managed to tell one of the most compelling Marvel stories we’ve seen. The grindhouse feel he gives to Cap’s bigger than life supervillains (like Arnim Zola… a robot with a giant face in it’s chest) has given Cap a solid rogue’s gallery to go to bat against.

THREE BIG BLACKEST NIGHT TITLES THIS WEEK! GREEN LANTERN #49 DELIVERS ANOTHER CRUCIAL CHAPTER OF BLACKEST NIGHT!

It’s a good week for Blackest Night, folks, with three killer titles hitting the shelves of Third Eye carrying the Blackest Night banner. And, as we’ve already seen nearly everything tying into DC’s Blackest Night has been high quality reading material.

The biggest of the three, of course, is the newest issue of GREEN LANTERN with GREEN LANTERN #49. The Green Lantern monthly title has been almost as essential as the Blackest Night mini-series itself, written by Blackest Night writer Geoff Johns, and filling in the gaps between issues of the core mini-series, each issue of this title has done a great job of moving the story along and explaining all the stuff that can’t be fit into the core Blackest Night book. This week, we get to see John Stewart’s role in the Blackest Night, and it’s impact on him. John Stewart has always been one of my favorite Lanterns, and the whole GL spin on his past as US Marine is pretty freaking cool. Plus, we haven’t seen a lot on him yet in Blackest Night, and it will be cool to see some more attention put on the character.

Next up, we have the first issue of one of those killer 3-issue limited Blackest Night miniseries that have been so good, and that’s BLACKEST NIGHT JSA #1. I’m really excited about this one, for a couple of reasons. First off, I really love the Justice Society, and secondly, I really dig Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman. Also, the fact that a killer creative team consisting of James Robinson (Starman, Justice League Cry for Justice), and one of DC’s rising star artists Eddy Barrows, along with the addition of classic Kyle Rayner-era Green Lantern writer Ron Marz, makes this one an exciting book to look out for.
From the looks of the preview, and the solicits, it looks like we’ll be seeing a ton of dead JSA and JSA-related characters. Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman, of course is pretty awesome (for those of you who haven’t read it before, I highly recommend the entire run of SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATER), and I’m hoping we’ll see Ted Knight, Al Pratt, and more. Anyways, we’ll be seeing the ultimate in the heroes of today fighting the heroes of yesteryear, with Dr. Midnite vs. Dr. Midnite, Mr. Terrific vs. Mr.Terrific, Sand vs. Wesley Dodds, and more. Plus, you know Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott, will be playing a big role in this, and it’ll be interesting to see where he fits into things (since his backstory and character is a tad different than most of your Green Lanterns).
Click here for the preview of BLACKEST NIGHT JSA #1

Finally, to round things off, we’ve got the Teen Titans #78, which admittedly, isn’t as quite as highly anticipated as the other two, it still looks like it should follow-up on Teen Titans #77 *Blackest Night* (which was very solid, and still in stock here at Third Eye) pretty well. The thing that’s exciting to me the most about this issue is that it’s featuring a pretty sweet team-up between Deathstroke (one of my favorite DC characters), and his daughter Ravager, and of course, we know that means only one thing: they’re gonna be hacking and slashing through a mountain of Black Lanterns. And, we all know that Ravager and Deathstroke have their fair share of fallen foes, and family that’ll be rising up as Black Lanterns to dish out some ass-whippings.

AVENGERS INITIATIVE #31 *SIEGE*FEATURES SPECIAL SIEGE TIE-IN! ANOTHER DOSE OF SIEGE TO PREPARE YOU FOR THE BIGGEST MARVEL EVENT SINCE “CIVIL WAR”

The Road to Siege began with a bang a few weeks ago in the pages of SIEGE: THE CABAL, and now you can fill in another piece of the puzzle with this week’s AVENGERS INITIATIVE #31, tying into SIEGE: THE CABAL. This is where it’s explained why Taskmaster is now seated upon the Cabal, and shows Osborn’s offer, and proposals to this often overlooked (but still, badass) Marvel villain.

And, meanwhile, on the Initiative end of things.. the Initiative gets called upon to assault an enemy that’s carrying some heavy duty power. Could that enemy be Asgardian?

LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME #1ARRIVES FROM RADICAL (PUBLISHERS OF FVZA, CITY OF DUST, ect) from THE WRITER OF FEAR AGENT & PUNISHER – ONE WEEK TO COMMIT THE LAST CRIME IN AMERICAN HISTORY!

Here’s a cool one I got an advance copy of last month, and really dug. Rick Remender (writer of cult favorite FEAR AGENT, and the current Punisher run featuring Frankencastle) has made this one his new pet project, and it reads AWESOME. A great, gritty noir-influenced style of artwork matched with some fast-paced, tense storytelling make this one a very fun read.

What’s the plot? In the not too distant future, the government basically plans to transmit a secret signal that will make it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit a crime. After the complexity of crimes like identity theft, and the rates of terrorism, this is their answer to preventing things from getting worse.

And, that’s where our hero comes in to play, Graham Brick, a low-life career criminal who’s never gotten a break. And, now, he finally comes on a killer way to make the heist that’ll set him up for life. Of course, it’s announced by the media that in just one week they’ll be transmitting that whole Anti-Crime signal, and this leaves Graham with a problem: he has only one week to commit the last crime in American history.

It’s as fun as it sounds, folks, and I’m already itching to see the next one. You can click here to read a preview of LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME #1

FALL OF HULKS GAMMA ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY FEATURING ARTWORK BY JOHN ROMITA JR!

Fall of Hulks ALPHA kicked things off with an awesome, old-school feeling origin story of the Intellectia, a gathering of assorted Marvel mad scientists, ranging from obscure characters like Egghead and the Mad Thinker to big baddies like the Leader, and Dr. Doom. And, now, this week, the other half of that arrives in the pages of FALL OF HULKS GAMMA! Before, I go any further…

IT’S JOHN ROMITA JR… DRAWING THE HULK. NOT JUST THE HULK. BUT LOTS OF HULKS! What more could you want?

Seriously though, it’s not often that I get excited by the artist alone that’s attached to a book, but Romita JR was born to draw BIG. His run on Thor with Dan Jurgens in the ’90s was great, and trust me, it wasn’t because of Dan Jurgens. And, his later work on Hulk was also awesome. But enough of my fanboy freakout over Romita JR, lets get onto just what you can expect this week out of FALL OF HULKS GAMMA.

This finishes up the set-up for the biggest Hulk storyline since World War Hulk, and leaves the stage set for the Fall of the Hulks. We don’t know much, but what we do know is that a certain Hulk’s death sets the entire Hulk family of characters into an unstoppable rage, and could really dish out some serious havoc for the rest of the Marvel Universe.

For those of you keeping track, here’s a quick run down of what’s out in the line of FALL OF THE HULKS so far:
FALL OF THE HULKS ALPHA – still in stock at Third Eye
HULK #18 - still in stock at Third Eye
and now..
FALL OF HULKS GAMMA – in stock at Third Eye this Wednesday 12/23/09

CHEW #7 CONTINUES THE BEST NEW SERIES OF 2009!  THE QUIRKY ADVENTURES OF A COP THAT EATS HUMAN REMAINS! GET THE TRADE WITH 1-5 for ONLY $9.99

Chew is the little book that could. This series came out of nowhere earlier in the year, and took the comics world by storm to become one of the biggest hits for IMAGE since Walking Dead. And, it deserves every ounce of hype it’s been given. It’s that damn good. This week, the saga of Tony Chu continues the second story arc of CHEW “International Flavor”, and it looks like we’re going to be seeing  just how lethal an agent of the U.S Department of Agriculture can be.

And, of course, there’s a lone F.D.A agent standing between her and her goal, and that just happens to be Tony Chu.

What’s Chew all about? Well, picture this: all poultry is illegal due to bird flu. A state of prohibition on chicken, turkey, and more exists similar to the prohibition placed on Alcohol in the early part of the 20th century. Speak-easies serve chicken dinners. Crimes are committed to further profit in a world where poultry is treated like sought-after drugs. And, that’s just the backdrop of the story. The real kicker is the main character, Tony Chu. See, Tony Chu is a cibopath, meaning that he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats. Eat a hamburger, see the cow getting killed. Eat an apple, smell the pesticides being sprayed. It’s a tough life. And, then one day, he somehow figures he can use his abilities to track down the names of several murdered girls through some unorthodox methods… and that brings us to now, where we have Tony Chu working for the FDA, eating the remains of the dead to solve cases. It’s one of the freshest books we’ve seen here in quite some time, and we really can’t recommend it enough.

You can pick up the trade paperback now at Third Eye consisting of CHEW #1-5 for only $9.99.

VICTORIAN UNDEAD #2 – SHERLOCK HOLMES. ZOMBIES. STEAMPUNK AWESOMENESS THROUGH AND THROUGH. Miss issue #1? We still got it in stock to catch you up!

Here’s one that was a surprise success at the shop, but I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised, because… Sherlock Holmes + Zombies = Total win. Seriously though, the new Wildstorm series VICTORIAN UNDEAD is definitely another welcome addition to the solid roster of self-contained books like NORTH 40 that Wildstorm’s been adding to it’s line-up.

So, what’s it all about? A meteor’s crashed to London, and uh oh.. the dead begin to rise after an odd sickness has taken a good part of the city. Meanwhile, Holmes and Watson are taking on some dastardly villain… who appears to be a crazy 19th century Robot. And of course, through the means of taking on this case… they get drug into this whole mess of the dead rising and trying to.. EAT PEOPLE’S BRAINS!

Seriously though, the first issue of this was a VERY solid read, and it’s got me excited about the second one. I love seeing new twists on old concepts, and this book takes two somewhat stale storytelling concepts (zombies & Sherlock Holmes), and mixes the two to make one hell of a fun read. The characterization of Holmes is on point, and it really reads like a great detective book despite the somewhat wacky premise. Not to mention, the artwork is pretty superb and does a great job of conveying the mood of the story.

Bottom line? If you’re a fan of steampunky stories, or zombies.. you should check this out, because it’s got enough of both elements to keep you coming back for more.

The second issue arrives this Wednesday, and we still have limited quantities of issue #1 in stock, so if you want to hop on, you can then.

PUNISHER #12 *FRANKENCASTLE CHAPTER 2* - THE PUNISHER… LEADER OF THE LEGION OF MONSTERS? THE SECOND ISSUE IN THE QUIRKIEST, FRESHEST-LOOKING APPROACH TO A MARVEL CHARACTER YET!

So, about a month and a half ago, the Punisher had his head lopped off by Daken (in DARK REIGN THE LIST PUNISHER one-shot). And, his body parts, all dismembered, and what-not, got dumped into the sewers. Well, they were gathered up by the Legion of Monsters. Yes. THAT Legion of Monsters. Morbius. Werewolf by Night. Man-Thing. You know the drill. And, he was cobbled together into a patchwork Frankenstein-like monstrosity. See, there’s some mystery squad of Samurai dudes running around killing all the Marvel monsters. All the Fin Fang Fooms, the Kirby giants, and of course, the ’70s frightmares like Werewolf By Night.

And, this is where the concept of Frankencastle comes in… the Legion of Monsters decides that they need his military strategy genius, and decides to put it to good use by resurrecting him as this ridiculous looking Frankenstein thing.

This sounds like it shouldn’t be good, BUT IT IS! Rick Remender (FEAR AGENT), and Tony Moore (Walking Dead, Exterminators, Fear Agent) manage to deliver an over-the-top quirky and fun read in the first issue of this book, and a lot of it is due in part to Tony Moore’s unique art-style. Plus, the colors look SHARP on Moore’s art, and fit the mood of the book perfectly.

Remender manages to keep his tongue-in-cheek without being cheesy, and after describing the concept, I’m sure you’re as puzzled by me about how he does that, but folks, he makes it work.

This one’s a real curiousity for me, I really enjoyed the first one, but page after page, I was like “WTF?”… in a good way.. in a “I have to keep reading to see where this is going to go” kind of way.

So, if you’re looking for something fun, something fresh, and something different out of Marvel, then you should definitely pick up PUNISHER #11 *FRANKENCASTLE PT 1* where the story starts. We still have it in stock here at Third Eye, in limited quantities.

For those of you like me who read the first one, and dug it, I know you’re gonna be waiting on the second part this Wednesday.

CRIMINAL: THE SINNERS #3 HITS THE SHELVES THIS WEDNESDAY! THE BEST COMIC YOU’RE NOT READING! FIND OUT WHY CRIMINAL IS A MUST-READ! ISSUES #1 & #2 STILL IN STOCK!

CRIMINAL is flat out the best crime comic I think I’ve ever read. And, that’s a tall order, because crime noir has been pretty well-represented in the world of comics over the past couple of decades. I mean, I loved me some Sin City, and 100 Bullets, but nothing tops CRIMINAL. Criminal is more than just a comic book, it’s an experience. When a new issue comes out, I can spend a good thirty minutes sunk deep within it. Every page, every panel, is packed with so much atmosphere, and storytelling that it really accomplishes that rare feat of sucking you into another world and not letting go.

The alchemy of art and story from Brubaker and Phillips pulls you in, and doesn’t let go.. and just when the story ends, leaving you on the edge of your seat… you’re still left with a good four to six pages of awesome back-matter to read about crime noir. A lot of times, Brubaker has guest-writers come in, and talk about their favorite aspects of genre fiction. Guys like Patton Oswalt rapping about their favorite crime movies from the ’60s just makes the entire package better.

And, folks, this is a book you do NOT want to wait for trade on. The back-matter does not get reprinted into the trades, so you are really missing out on the whole experience.

Seriously, there are very few books that I will proclaim universally as something everybody should be reading, but CRIMINAL is most definitely one of those books.

Now, I’ve sung it’s praises more than enough, you’re probably wondering just what the hell CRIMINAL is all about?

Each story arc of CRIMINAL is self-contained to 4-6 issues. While the characters all exist within the same world, you can read CRIMINAL in any order you please. This means that the current arc, THE SINNERS, is a perfect entry point for those of you who haven’t yet read CRIMINAL. The shared world thing is just a part of what makes CRIMINAL so cool, as it’s neat to see a background character you barely notice in an earlier story become a prominent figure in a later story (as was the case with “Bad Night”). The current arc, the SINNERS, is all about someone who is killing off “made men”.. criminal power-players, if you will, who should otherwise be untouchable. And, since the underworld can’t exactly go to the police, they bring in enforcer Tracy Lawless to investigate things. A conflicted man who doesn’t even want to be working in this world in the first place.

The characterization in this book is so sharp, that by the time you finish the first issue, you’ll feel like you’ve known Lawless all your life. And, with the developments of CRIMINAL: THE SINNERS #2, I personally can’t wait to see where things are going in issue #3 this week.

If you haven’t yet read CRIMINAL, we’ll the previous two issues, in addition to issue #3, well-stocked this week, to make it easy on you to catch up. Don’t miss out on one of the best series of this decade.

“THE BOYS”, “PREACHER”, & “CROSSED” WRITER GARTH ENNIS’S BATTLEFIELDS: HAPPY VALLEY #1 BRINGS US MORE OF ENNIS’S GRUELLING, BLOODY WAR STORIES! IF TARANTINO’S “INGLORIOUS BASTARDS” WAS A COMIC, THIS WOULD BE IT!

He’s taken superheroes to their darkest extremes in THE BOYS. He’s given a whole, twisted new meaning to survival horror in CROSSED, and he’s written countless other epics (including the legendary PREACHER series)… Garth Ennis is a man who knows how to do comics right. But, there’s one thing, that’s a personal labor of love for him, and it really shows. Some of his best material happens to fall under the genre of war stories, and Ennis manages to tell some of the most brutal, well-paced, yet accessible war stories you could think of.

This go around, he’s back with a brand new series called BATTLEFIELDS: HAPPY VALLEY, and the first issue debuts this Wednesday. The year is 1942. And a young Australian Ken Harding arrives in London, anxious to play his part in the aerial bombing of all those Nazi bastards. Losses are high, and morale is low, but our hero remains unphased until he meets his crew: a foul-mouthed, battle-hardened gang of guys who take no prisoners. And, now they’re headed to the heavily guarded industrial heartland of Ruhr, known to the fighter pilots as Happy Valley.

We’ve seen Ennis’s previous war stuff, and it’s always dripping with blood, and realism, while at the same time keeping in habit with his knack for strong characterization, and sense of dark humor.

If you’re a fan of the Boys, Crossed, or any of Ennis’s other work, we HIGHLY recommend giving his war stuff a shot this week with Happy Valley.

THOR #605 – DR. DOOM VS. THOR! ASGARDIANS TURNED INTO HORRIBLE CYBORG MONSTROSITIES! THE NEW DIRECTION OF THOR IS AWESOME!

First off, if you missed issue #604 of THOR, you need to pick it up, and hop aboard the current arc of Thor, cause it’s SMOKIN’! We were pretty skeptical about how well the new creative team would do following up a major act like JMS, but they picked up the ball and ran with it, kicking off a brand new story arc that’s bringing all the cool Dr. Doom/Asgard connections to full culmination. If you did miss THOR #604, don’t worry, because we still have it in stock here at the shop, in limited quantities, so you can still hop aboard the monthly series with only two issues to catch up.

As for what’s to expect this week in the newest installment of THOR.. simply put.. it’s DR. DOOM versus THOR in a throwdown that’s sure to be epic. #604 ended with Doom’s Asgardian cyborg hybrid monstrosities coming into plain sight, and then.. a certain God of Thunder appearing on the horizon to deal out some righteous justice.

IMAGE UNITED #2 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND CONTINUES THE HIT NEW SERIES THAT KEEPS SELLING OUT! FIND OUT WHY THIS LIMITED SERIES PENNED BY ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, HAUNT) & ILLUSTRATED BY ALL THE IMAGE FOUNDERS IS A HIT! #1 STILL IN STOCK AT THIRD EYE!

The first issue of IMAGE UNITED went to a second print almost immediately, and it looks like the second issue will be going to as well. But, worry not, folks, we’ve got PLENTY of copies of IMAGE UNITED #2 coming in this Wednesday, and trust us, you’re gonna wanna give it a look. It’s actually pretty damn cool what they’ve accomplished with IMAGE UNITED, combining the talents of all the classic IMAGE founders on one book written by Robert Kirkman.

So, here’s how it works: Spawn appears in the book.. McFarlane draws him. Witchblade appears. Silvestri draws her. Get the idea? The book itself was a fun read, and is an action-packed nostalgic joyride for anyone who grew up reading comics during the IMAGE era in the ’90s. Bigger than life, with a well-paced story from Robert Kirkman, and tons of killer arrt, IMAGE UNITED is a blast.

Of course, the big reveal at the end of issue #1 was pretty cool… the villain of the series? Al Simmons, you know, the original Spawn, the guy we all remember from back in the day. And, yes, that’s him above with the horns. See, it looks like ol’ Al has found that destiny they always eluded to in those issues of Spawn way back in the day, and now he’s out to wreak havoc on the entire Image universe.

All in all, it’s not a plot-heavy book, but IMAGE UNITED is a blast, and provides a fun read, and a fun trip down memory lane for a lot of us who grew up reading comics in the ’90s. If you need us to put a copy in your box, just shoot us an email!

Oh, and if you missed out on issue #1, don’t worry.. we had a feeling it’d be a hit, and still have a decent amount of issue #1 hanging out here at the store for you to catch up with.

THIRD EYE ASKS “ARE YOU READING?” ABSOLUTION FROM AVATAR PRESS.. THINK ROBOCOP MEETS DEXTER

Here’s one that I wanted to spotlight because I feel that it’s an AWESOME series that’s continuing to fly under the radar here at Third Eye. While issue #5 ships this Wednesday, and I’m stoked about that, I wanted to take a moment to give an overview on the whole series and why I’m digging it so much.

First off, the story of Absolution is set in a world where “vigilante police forces” have been established. Basically, special police departments equipped with superhuman abilities to handle crime in the most extreme ways possible, HOWEVER, they are still required to uphold the same code of ethics as any other law enforcement official… in other words.. they can’t go around making dude’s heads explode.

And that’s where our (anti)hero comes in. John Dusk is one of these special police officers who has crossed the line from law officer to serial killer, albeit, of criminals. In the first issue, we’re led to believe that Dusk has seen many horrors before making this decision, and it culminates in him letting a rapist murderer die of blood loss.

From there, after getting his first taste of justice, he begins leading a double life, compulsively executing criminals, and evil men.

This series has all the makings of a modern day take on the age-old tale that stories like Robocop (but without the trademark satire), Judge Dredd, and more have explored. It kind of reminds you a little of DEXTER, mixed with a world of superhumans.

Plus, the art just gets better and better with every issue! We currently have all issues of ABSOLUTION instock here at Third Eye for you to catch up, otherwise, I’m sure those of you already reading the series are pumped for issue #5 this Wednesday!

HELLBOY: BRIDE OF HELL ONE-SHOT GIVES US A STRONG DOSE OF HELLBOY AND MIKE MIGNOLA TO END THE YEAR!

Nobody does creepy, mythology-rich horror comics like Mike Mignola. Nobody! I’ve been a Hellboy fan since I was just a snot-nosed kid in a Cramps t-shirt, and I gotta tell you, it’s only gotten better since then. This week, we get a nice little Christmas gift in the form of a Mignola-written one-shot with Richard Corben art. If you just want a good Hellboy story, done in one, then this one’s a gotta-read. Or, if you’ve never read a lot of Hellboy before, then now’s your chance to give it a try!

In BRIDE OF HELL, a young girl has been kidnapped and Hellboy’s tracked her down to rural France, where she’s about to be sacrificed to Asmodeus. This one’s definitely a pulpy, weird tale filled with love gone wrong, demonic revenge, ghosts, and the tombs of King Solomon.

IRREDEEMABLE #9 & IRREDEEMABLE VOLUME 2 TRADE PAPERBACK ARRIVE THIS WEDNESDAY TO FILL YOUR “SUPERMAN GONE EVIL” FIX!

Are you reading IRREDEEMABLE yet? If you’re not, you really should be. It’s one of our big favorites here month in and month out, and is one of the most well-written superhero books coming out right now.

We’ve got a double dose of IRREDEEMABLE this week for you, with both the 9th issue hitting (which continues from the epic reveals of issue #8), and the second volume of the IRREDEEMABLE trade paperback, which collects issues #5-8.

Why should you be reading IRREDEEMABLE? First off, the book practically pulsates with an insane post-modern 21st century comic book energy. It’s the story of the Plutonian, your standard Superman arch-type, who has gone mad, and started slaughtering the world around him. Basically, it’s SUPERMAN gone EVIL, and it’s great.

Why is it so good? The reason why it reads so well is because the series writer, Mark Waid (the man who did KINGDOM COME), is quite possibly the biggest SUPERMAN fan… in the world. He loves SUPERMAN, he loves the world of SUPERMAN, and he gets the character almost better than anyone else. And, this, this is what it takes to write a well-done take on what would happen if the Man of Steel went wrong? And, what did it take to get him to that point? Because Waid is such a fan of Superman, and his history, he is able to make all those little details that most writers would miss, count.

I don’t know, there’s a certain kind of electric excitement I get when I pick up a new issue of IRREDEEMABLE (and now the companion series, INCORRUPTIBLE), where I know I’m going to be thrust into a world of superheroes that SHOULD be cookie-cutter, but aren’t. They’re more fleshed-out, and three-dimensional than most characters that’ve been around for years.

Simply, put IRREDEEMABLE rules, and you need to check it out! The first trade paperback is only $9.99, and we can either catch you up in the single issues, or you can just follow up with Volume 2!

STAFF PICKS

Trish – Green Lantern Corps #43 – I made this my pick just because of the fact that it was such a fun read, and it was so easy to get into, even though I’m not as familiar with the Green Lantern Corps as Steve or Torma. I do like Guy Gardner, and seeing him running around ripping off arms, and kicking ass was AWESOME.

Torma – Dark Avengers #12- TOTAL MAYHEM! The best issue of DARK AVENGERS yet. They finally do something awesome with the Sentry, and it is bigger than life. There’s a great final page splash that gives a nice reference to what’s coming in SIEGE!

Steve – INCORRUPTIBLE #1 – Man, am I easy to read or what? I was hyped for this one like hell, and it totally lived up to the hype. Incorruptible takes everything you always THOUGHT a sketchy, shady supervillain would do… and makes it happen.. and then shows how tricky his road to redemption is. A great read for Irredeemable fans, and non-fans alike.
