THE BIGGEST SPIDER-MAN STORY IN AGES, AS HIS CLASSIC ROGUES GALLERY IS REDEFINED FOR THE 21st CENTURY! BY IRREDEEMABLE WRITER MARK WAID!

This story has been brewing since the return of Doc Ock in Amazing Spider-man #600, and I’ve gotta say, Marvel’s got me stoked. The Spidey books really begin to make a turn towards being better with American Son last year, and then a big step towards improvement with the turning points of issue #600. Old, forgotten villains slowly began to return in the pages of ASM, and the new takes on the Chameleon and Doc Ock, were both very good.

But all of this was just a prelude to what is sure to be one of the biggest Spidey stories in history, and that’s The Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is a new storyline (which begins in this week’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612) which will be a year long marathon for Spidey, where old classic Spider-man villains are brought back with a vicious new edge. The first of which is Electro, who I don’t think we’ve seen since the events on the Raft in NEW AVENGERS. And of course, we’ll be seeing the Vulture, The Rhino, and more as the storyline continues.

So, what’s the scoop on Electro’s return? Well, here you have one of the coolest Spidey villains, when it comes to visual appearance, and his powers, but he’s also one of the least-respected. This first story arc in the Gauntlet is about that, and from what we’ve been told Electro’s powers have been considerably amped up. The thing is as Electro makes the transition into middle-age, his metabolism changes, and so do his powers. They’re more erratic, and less easy to control. And, that’s where the amping up comes from, because he’s going to be getting a pretty surprising Marvel villain to help stabilize his powers and make him meaner, and better than before. Of course, Electro’s big motivation may not center around Spidey, but a sense of outrage over the fact that the fortune he’s accumulated over the years was lost in the economic meltdown. Now, he’s almost somewhat of a folk hero, electrocuting corrupt corporate fat cats…. but of course, he’s still a bad dude, and when Spidey gets in his way, he’s going to toast him.

Now, beyond the whole Electro thing, the one thing we know that is going to be an ongoing theme in the GAUNTLET storyline is how these familiar villains returning to bring pain to Peter Parker’s life are going to be coming after him one after the other after the other. We know that big changes are expected to happen, and this storyline is supposed to be a real no holds barred kind of assault on the character.

IRREDEEMABLE writer MARK WAID is going to be penning this arc that begins in Amazing Spider-man #612. And, the artist, someone who I haven’t heard of is a very bold and interesting choice for Spidey. I think the art looks great, and it has a very gritty, almost Vertigo-esque vibe to it, that really adds a whole new level of darkness to what is sure to be one hell of an arc.

But I think we all know what’s really cool about this: It’s classic Spidey villains coming back with a bang!

TWO MORE LANTERN RINGS ARRIVE THIS WEEK AT THIRD EYE! We’ve been going through rings faster than we expected. But, worry not though, we still have a very limited amount of Orange, Indigo, and Yellow Rings available, so if you haven’t gotten your’s yet, we have you covered.
Now, onto this week, we’ve got two tie-ins, both of which look good, but one of which I’m personally VERY excited for. And, that’s the ADVENTURE COMICS #4. Reasons why? Well, first off.. it’s written by GEOFF JOHNS, you know, the guy who’s been writing the main BLACKEST NIGHT series (and GREEN LANTERN) all this time, and pretty much masterminding all of this killer suff. And, then secondly, it’s featuring the return of everyone’s favorite mass-murdering crybaby, SUPERBOY PRIME. And, then, to top it all off, it looks like he’s met his match, as the Black Lanterns know just the buttons to push to make Superboy Prime’s heart all tasty for them to gobble down. This is probably going to be one of the best ring-related tie-ins, being how Adventure Comics is already a stellar read, and then the addition of a fan-favorite villain like SUPERBOY PRIME. Ontop of all that, when you purchase ADVENTURE COMICS #4, you get a FREE Blue Lantern ring!

And, then, next up, we’ve got OUTSIDERS #24, which spins directly out of the events of BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS. Black Lantern Terra is back with a vengeance, and she wants to gobble down the hearts of Geo-Force, and the Outsiders. When you purchase OUTSIDERS #24, you’ll receive a free VIOLET *STAR SAPPHIRE* ring. To be honest on this one, I think it could go either way. I REALLY liked Blackest Night Titans, and Peter Tomasi has proven himself as a really stellar writer (handling a good chunk of tie-in stuff already for Blackest Night, in addition to the killer work he’s done on Green Lantern Corps, and underrated miniseries like GOTHAM UNDERGROUND). However, I haven’t been following OUTSIDERS as closely, so it really could go either way.

And, as a side note… dude, Booster Gold and Rebels were both AWESOME last week. I expected the Booster to be really good, but the REBELS, I wasn’t too sure about. I actually went back and checked out most of the back issues on the series, because I enjoyed that issue so much. It’s a good book, really deserves a look. The artwork, and writing are both top notch, and the whole idea of a superteam for hire is pretty damn cool. I don’t know, it was awesome…. the ending of REBELS #10 is great, even if you haven’t been following the series. A big twist as a perfect fit for the Sinestro Corps is chosen. And, the whole plot running with Starro the Conqueror (turns out those starfish things were just his drones, but Starro himself is an actual humanoid warlord) is pretty damn cool.

Finally, on the Blackest Night plate this week, we’ve got what’s sure to be the most humorous of the Blackest Night tie-ins with SUPERMAN/BATMAN #66.Yes, it’s Black Lantern Solomon Grundy versus Bizarro & Man-Bat in this one-shot Blackest Night tie-in.

THIRD EYE GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOTLIGHT:BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL HC, GREEN LANTERN CORPS – EMERALD ECLIPSE HC *PRELUDE TO BLACKEST NIGHT*, WAR OF KINGS HARDCOVER, ROBERT KIRKMAN’S DESTROYER, DARK AVENGERS VOLUME 1 AND NEW AVENGERS VOLUME 11 TRADE PAPERBACKS… A BIG WEEK FOR GREAT TRADES & HARDCOVERS!

Man, it is a stacked week for good trades and hardcovers. Some real blockbusters too, like the Battle for the Cowl hardcover, and the WAR OF KINGS hardcover.

Anyways, here’s a quick rundown of what’s arriving this week…

The biggest Batman story of last Spring, and the genesis of all the awesome stuff happening now in the Bat-universe. This is the story where Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Dick Grayson, and many more are all racing to figure out who will be the man to wear the mantle of the Bat. A great read, with some fantastic artwork. This is definitely one of those must-read Batman graphic novels.

Green Lantern Emerald Eclipse collects the Prelude to Blackest Night issues of GREEN LANTERN CORPS. This is where Mongul enslaves the planet Daxam, and makes it the homebase for his Mongul Corps of Rogue Yellow Lanterns. A great read, and great set up for this year’s BLACKEST NIGHT event!

War of Kings was one of the hippest little Marvel events of 2009. In the shadow of big events like DARK REIGN, War of Kings continued to do what stories like ANNIHILATION and ANNIHILATION CONQUEST had done before it, and that’s strengthen and enrich the cosmic end of the Marvel Universe. The entire WAR OF KINGS saga is now collected here, along with WAR OF KINGS ASCENSION 1-4, WAR OF KINGS DARKHAWK 1-2, WAR OF KINGS WARRIORS, WAR OF KINGS WHO WILL RULE, WAR OF KINGS SAVAGE WORLD OF SAKAAR and WAR OF KINGS MARVEL SPOTLIGHT. This one’s a massive tome of space opera awesomeoness.

A cult favorite from last year. DESTROYER from Robert Kirkman (writer of WALKING DEAD & INVINCIBLE) is one of the most violent, bloody things the writer has ever done. It’s the story of the Destroyer, a masked vigilante, who is now in his senior ages, and on his way to the grave. So what’s he do? Hunt down and slaughter every supervillain he’s ever encountered to leave the world a safer place for his family.

DARK AVENGERS volume 1 collects the first six issues of the biggest Marvel series to launch in 2009. Imagine this, the Avengers are composed of predominantly bad guys, and their leader.. Norman Osborn! Killer story, killer art. A great read.

COWBOY NINJA VIKING #2 - MULTIPLE PERSONALITY MAYHEM! IN THIS FOLLOW-UP TO THE SMASH HIT NEW IMAGE SERIES!

Image has been really making a name for itself these last couple of years. I personally credit the success of fresh new series like WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE as a big part of their new direction. They’ve really cemented their place in the comics industry as a publisher that is not afraid to take chances, and put out quirky yet fresh new ideas that end up being the one thing we love here most at Third Eye: damn good comics.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is a perfect example of this. This is a story about a world where individuals with multiple personality disorder are turned into agents of destruction known as triplets. They hone in on three dominant personalities, and turn them into assassins capable of some serious mayhem. And of course, the star of this series, Cowboy Ninja Viking, has three personalities that are constantly at odds with each other. The ninja being the thinker, the Viking being the killer, and the Cowboy being the loose cannon. What you get is a humorous yet ultra-violent tale where the three personalities cause the man they reside in to do horrible, and reckless things.

And, now in this week’s issue #2, we get to see COWBOY NINJA VIKING going head to head with the Triplet introduced at the beginning (and end) of issue #1. Yes, it’s the fellow in the deep sea diver helmet on the cover. And, yes it will be awesome.

The title of the book makes it seem like it’s going to be just a straight humor book. You know, something that would be a good meme on the web, but Cowboy Ninja Viking reminds you more of a frenetic Quentin Tarantino meets Takashi Miike movie than it does a one-trick pony joke. Also, a big addition to the awesomeoness of the series we think is the unique artwork by Riley Rossmo (who also does PROOF for Image, a book about a Bigfoot that works for the FBI, flesh-eating faeries, and monsters that wear human skin… we recommend checking it out!). The art in this series is very stylized, and carries the story well. The tones, and pacing really capture the frenetic concept of the book.

We’ve got #1s in stock here at Third Eye in case you missed issue #1, and if you did, then we highly miss checking out this series this week.

For those of you who got the first one, and dug it, be sure to check out this follow-up issue this week. The first one had a lot to cram in, with the setting up of the world, and introducing the characters (and that was my only complaint, too much going on), but it looks like the second one is going to take all the awesome points of the first and really carry the story forward. Plus, it looks like it’s going to be one seriously bloody throwdown!

The conclusion of last month’s DARK REIGN THE LIST PUNISHER one-shot was a HUGE shock. HUGE! It’s not often that Marvel surprises us all like that without any kind of warning or hints. In case you missed it, the Punisher was brutally dismembered by Daken (Dark Wolverine), decapitated, and mutilated, his body parts were scattered about.

Now, beginning this week, Frankencastle, featuring the creative team of Rick Remender and Tony Moore (known for their cult favorite FEAR AGENT, and Tony Moore as the original artist of WALKING DEAD), shows us a bizarre take on the character of the Punisher. Everything is very hush hush on just what this storyline is going to entail, but after the huge ending of the LIST PUNISHER one-shot, combined with the stellar creative team onboard for this, we’re expecting it to be pretty cool.

But seriously, this is going to go either one of two ways: Frankencastle is going to be REALLY REALLY cool, or REALLY REALLY not cool. The idea is definitely out there, and the whole concept of the Punisher being resurrected as an undead monstrosity is pretty damn out of left field. But, hey, sometimes ideas that sound ridiculous and impossible, are just so ridiculous that they end up being incredible. This was the case with Marvel Zombies and it’s original inception (of course, now it’s been run into the ground a bit, but man when that first series hit, it was fresh as hell).

So, I guess, FRANKENCASTLE ranks up there as the title I am most curious about this week, and expecting the most surprise from.

Dark Avengers continues to keep going strong as a solid monthly read. The last page of last month’s DARK AVENGERS #10 was pretty epic indeed, and now the effects of that last page are going to unravel in this week’s newest issue.

Who is the obscure villain the Molecule Man? And, why is Norman Osborn sweating this one big time? And, how the hell are the Dark Avengers going to fight a being that control the very molecules that make them up?

The road to Seige continues, as Osborn’s plans continue to unravel… and now it’s time to see what the mysterious cabal of Molecule Man, the Beyonder, Enchantress, and Mephisto have to say about things.

Despite the delays, we are still extremely excitetd about getting the next issue of GEOFF JOHNS’S FLASH REBIRTH. Now, as someone who grew up reading comics in the ’90s… Wally was my Flash. He’s the one I grew up with as the Flash. All those great high-energy Mark Waid Flash story arcs, and then the later Mark Millar, Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns arcs. They were my bread and butter as a kid. I loved em. Barry was before my time, and I never really got to know the character. Never really had a huge attachment to him.

And, then Geoff Johns does what he does for nearly every friggin’ DCU Character, and made me like Barry Allen. Flash Rebirth has been as much about making Barry Allen into an accessible, modern 21st century character as it has been about the actual in-continuity return of the character. Johns has been breathing new life into Barry, and since Barry’s been dead pretty much since before the modern style of storytelling that’s the mainstay in comics these days came around, he’s got pretty much a blank slate to play with.

But, anyways, enough about all that.. Flash Rebirth has been awesome, the story’s been great, the art’s been incredible.. we love it. And, this week, we finally get issue #5!

One of the most impressive relaunches of this decade for Marvel has been their revival of their cosmic characters. What were once underused, and overlooked characters have slowly been turned into some of the most compelling series coming out. It all began in the pages of ANNIHILATION and ANNIHILATION conquest (now available in trade paperback) and then continued last year in the pages of WAR OF KINGS (arriving this week in hardcover). Now, the REALM OF KINGS begins, and continues the trend in high-action, bigger than life space opera sci-fi awesomeoness set against the backdrop of the Marvel landscape. Just take everything that is cool about stuff like WARHAMMER 40K, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and apply it to the world of Marvel Superheroes, and you’ll get the Marvel Cosmic-verse.

Realm of Kings follows up on the aftermath of WAR OF KINGS (Where Blackbolt screamed off Vulcan’s skin!), and also promises the return of the original Quasar. After seeing all of the awesome things that they’ve done with characters like Darkhawk, Nova, the Guardians of the Galaxy and more, we’re very eager to see the return of Quasar here at Third Eye.

Out of all the Dark Reign The List one-shots, I feel that this is going to be the biggest, or at least on the level of the Punisher one-shot. The creative team lined up for this one is stellar, with Adam Kubert handling the art chores. And, it’s also the final chapter of THE LIST, and plays a huge part in what is going to be the conclusion of this whole Dark Reign thing.

But, lets be real… it’s Spider-man going up against his most hated enemy, Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin. While this whole DARK REIGN/DARK AVENGERS thing has gone on, we’ve been waiting and wondering about how Spidey would play into the mix, what with Osborn being his mortal foe, and now it looks like we’re going to find out.

This is the story where Norman Osborn decides to finally execute Spider-man once and for all. Now, will he succeed? While we’re not expecting a Spidey death, we do expect big universe-shaking ramifications that make this one-shot a very special DARK REIGN THE LIST chapter.

PURE ESPIONAGE AWESOMEONESS COURTESY OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CREATIVE TEAM BENDIS & MALEEV

Dude, if you’re not reading Spider-woman, you are missing out. This series has one of the best teams in comics working on it, with Bendis & Maleev (who did what’s in my opinion one of the best all-time Daredevil runs), and trust us, it’s GOOD. We know, we know, skrulls are played out, but the skrulls really play a VERY VERY minor role in this. It’s more about Jessica Drew working as a kind of a government-sponsored bounty hunter that tracks down aliens in hiding (NOT JUST SKRULLS!).

The writing is 100% on-point, and the artwork is PERFECT for the series. Maleev’s gritty pencils pull you in, and don’t let you out.

Currently, Spider-woman’s knee deep in trouble in the dark alleys of Madripoor, and Madame Hydra wants to bring her home to the nest.

The tone, and feel of the book kind of reminds you of a more brutal, super-power charged La Femme Nikita, and if you remember that show, then you know what we’re talking about.

Either way, give Spider-woman a shot. We currently have issues 1, and 2 both in stock, so it’s relatively easy to catch up.

What’s better than the adventures of the world’s most famous detective? Well, when you pit the world’s most famous detective against hordes of flesh-eating zombie freaks, that’s what!

Honestly, folks, I got to read a bit of this, and it was pretty fun. I really have no idea what to expect as the premise sounds so ridiculous, and over-the-top… that really, anything can happen. But, the art is tight, the story looks pretty good, and the zombie angle, while cool, doesn’t look to be the only thing this book is carrying. It has a very Steampunk Adventures of Watson and Holmes kind of thing going on, that I think is pretty damn cool.

Finally! An ongoing Transformers series! And it’s featuring all of the characters that we love and grew up with here at Third Eye. Seriously though, lets face it, if you grew up in the ’80s, you’ve got a fondness for Transformers, or GI JOE, or both. And, while series like Maximum Dinobots and All Hail Megatron have been good, solid reads, the non-stop random mini-series, one-shots, and so forth have lacked consistency.

So it’s a welcome change to see IDW rolling out an ongoing Transformers comic finally. And it’s everything you’d want out of a good TF comic… good art, a writer who knows the characters well , and an overall direction for the characters.

THE AUTHORITY.. IS NOW GOOD AGAIN! CHECK OUT THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR THIS WEEK!

Man, the Authority was one of my favorite books when I was a teenager. This is back when Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch first kicked it off, and then Mark Millar and Frank Quitely took it over. I mean, after those two creative teams left, it never really was quite the same. Dan Abnett did some pretty cool work on it, and Brubaker had a nice little run, but nothing ever matched the level of those first two runs.

If you haven’t already read the original Authority stuff, I recommend snagging AUTHORITY RELENTLESS (volume 1), AUTHORITY UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT (volume 2), and AUTHORITY TRANSFER OF POWER. Those are some of the best superhero comics of the late 90s, early 2000s, and they really paved the way for a lot of what we have now. In fact, I credit the Authority with helping make the big widescreen way of superhero storytelling we have now so popular. See, without the Authority, we wouldn’t have had Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimates, and without the Ultimates, well, lets just say I don’t think the Avengers would be the mega-popular team they are now. In other words, the Authority redefined the dynamics of superteams, and their place in the world. Gritty, realistic, and sometimes violent as hell, the Authority took the perfect balance of social issues, politics, and bigger than life spaceships crashing into city spires action, and made it into one crazy awesome series.

The last real glimmer of hope I had for the Authority was when Grant Morrison and Gene Ha were going to do a run on the series. They only did two issues, and then the book kind of was left in limbo. The plot? The Authority crosses dimensions, and ends up in OUR world, our physical world, where they’re just comic books. There’s a very surreal moment where a couple members of the team are in a comic shop, looking at a copy of the Relentless graphic novel.

And of course, with them coming into our world, it means that bad mojo is happening on our planet. Now, of course, these ideas were explored later in more detail with books like 1985, but either way, we’re excited to see the Authority back.

Wildstorm has reissued the first two issues in a collected comic called THE AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER, that’s the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR 1 and 2, for only $2.99. And, now the series is being finished with Grant Morrison’s blessing by the very talented KEITH GIFFEN (he made the Justice League totally awesome way back in the day, and has since done some crazy good stuff like 52, ANNIHILATION, and more). Issue #3 ships this week, and we still have plenty of the AUTHORITY LOST YEAR READER available for you to catch up with.

Viking is pretty simply explained.. it’s the story of organized crime, in the Viking era. And, it is brutal as all hell. The real standout though about Viking is the gorgeous artwork that accompanies each issue.

Magneto is a villain who should be seen on the same scope as Dr. Doom, or Norman Osborn. In fact, his character is so rich, and strong, that he’s the best kind of villain: the kind you can almost relate to. It seems like for the last two decades, Marvel hasn’t really known what to do with Magneto. Even in Morrison’s EPIC run, Marvel editorial kind of came in and put the whole “that wasn’t REALLY Magneto” thing in there to minimize the impact of what he’d done. Half the time, he ends up coming off as a confused character, who’s not really a strong, defiant villain, nor a hero. The fact is though, Magneto is a supervillain, and a fine example of one. His appearance is iconic, his reasoning is sound, and when they’ve got a good writer on board with him, he’s an awesome character.

Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m rambling on about all this Magneto stuff? Well, to be honest, it’s all of those reasons above why I’m excited about Matt Fraction (the man responsible for making Iron Man one of the coolest books on the racks, and helping re-invent Iron Fist with Brubaker) and Greg Land’s upcoming Nation X storyline. It’s the Return of Magneto, flat out. And not, the weak, depowered Magneto we saw recently, but the real deal, pulling metal skeletons out of Wolverines, dropping steel girders on crowds of innocent bystandards, and trying to do what’s best for the mutant race Magneto.

Marvel hasn’t given us a whole lot to go on about what the plot of Nation X is, but we do know that Asteroid M has been rediscovered, and that alone is an interesting turn of events.

Sheer speculation from us here at Third Eye as to some central points to Magneto’s return? Cyclops has been making some very Magneto-like decisions over the last few years, and we feel that it’s something Magneto may have taken notice of… could this be a shift over to the dark side for Scott Summers? Again, it’s only sheer speculation, but we could see that plot point playing out really well.

Either way, one of the biggest comic book badasses of any ’80s and ’90s comic fan is returning this Wednesday, and he’s got a stellar creative team penning him. It’s sure to be a killer read, and we’re pumped.

The carnage of Blackest Night continues this Wednesday as the limited run of BLACKEST NIGHT BATMAN concludes, and the Green Lantern Corps goes head to head with the Black Lanterns on Oa as they attempt to decimate the Power Battery.
Folks, if you’re not reading some of these rock solid Blackest Night tie-ins, you are missing out! They have been delivering the goods on nearly every one of the tie-in series. From the BN Superman to the BN Titans to this week’s BN Batman, they’ve all been GREAT reads. If you haven’t yet checked out Blackest Night Batman, as of Wednesday we’ll have all three issues in stock for you to catch up with. Give it a shot, it’s guaranteed good! I mean, the whole idea of a Black Lantern Rogues Gallery consisting of dead Batman and Nightwing rogues.. that alone is a total win.
As for the Green Lantern Corps, if you haven’t been reading this one, you’re sleeping on a very good title. Even before Blackest Night began, the Corps was rocking and rolling with the Mongul War story arc, and Sins of the Star Sapphire. It really is a well-written book, that we feel often gets overlooked next to the monumental Green Lantern main title. Anyways, this week, in GL Corps #41, the Black Lantern Corps of Oa are battling the remnants of the Green Lantern Corps, and pushing towards destroying the Power Battery. With a legion of undead Green Lanterns, some obscure, some well-known, this one has been a real treat for both long-time GL fans, and those new to the world of GL.

I mean, whether it’s old school pulp novels from the likes of Max Allan Collins, or new school graphic novel hardboiled goodies like SCALPED and CRIMINAL, we have a real appreciation for the genre.

And, this, folks, is why I am so pumped for this new anthology graphic novel, NOIR, from DARK HORSE COMICS (publishers of HELLBOY, BPRD, and more). This anthology collection has a literal who’s who of solid contributors, like 100 Bullets author BRIAN AZZARELLO, Stray Bullets/Young Liars creator DAVID LAPHAM, INCOGNITO/CRIMINAL creative team ED BRUBAKER & SEAN PHILLIPS, and even one of the creative forces behind HBO’S TRUE BLOOD series.

Chockfull of brand new, original content from these great talents, this one looks to be a very promising start for what could be a compelling yearly anthology series. Give it a look this week, folks, we’ve seen previews, and we’re definitely calling this one as a Third Eye Must Buy.

How do we feel about Deadpool? Personally, I love most of his books. I worry sometimes about Marvel stretching him a little too thin, and overexposing him, but I mean, every generation of comic fans needs their own fourth-wall breaking, ultraviolent fun character, and Deadpool fits the bill perfectly for the 21st Century.

What’s so special about this week’s Deadpool #900? It’s a one-shot, 104 pages, packed full of Deadpool awesomeoness. That alone is a good start. However, what’s really got me excited is the list of creators onboard for this riff on Marvel’s 600 issues. Jason Aaron (Vertigo’s SCALPED), Duane Swierczynski (Cable, Immortal Weapons), Charlie Huston (famed crime novelist), and Joe Kelly (in my opinion, THE best man to write Deadpool) taking their shots at the character. MEANWHILE, you’ve got artists lined up like Kyle Baker, and yes, even Rob Liefeld (not sure if we’d call it a selling point, but the man did invent the character, so he definitely deserves his spot in this one).

It’s gonna be Deadpool vs. Mobsters, Aliens, Machine-gun toting Mimes, and much more. And it’s going to rule.

COMICS (publishers of IRREDEEMABLE, 28 DAYS LATER, ect) DEBUTS CREEPY, PULP HERO AWESOMENESS IN THE VEIN OF HELLBOY & THE GOON THIS WEDNESDAY!

Boom! has been impressing the heck out of us here at Third Eye this year. They’ve really come into their own as one of the top tier independent publishers, and have put out a very rich library of good books in the last year or two. From Mark Waid’s Superman Gone Evil epic, Irredeemable, to some of their killer licensed books like 28 Days Later and Die Hard Year One to some of the more eccentric titles like Poe, they’ve been on point.

A new ongoing series that looks to deliver ten tons of weird tales, modern day bloody knuckled pulp hero action is The Anchor. The Anchor.. a holy warrior, a freak of nature, a beast of burden, a viking raider.. he’s been it all. As the solicits describe him, the Anchor is God’s Leg Breaker.

Basically, one thousand years ago, an exiled beast of a man was taken into an ancient holy temple. He gave the only thing he could in return for their kindness: his fists. Now, an immortal warrior monk, he’s’ all that stands between the invading armies of Hell and mankind.

Sound epic? This one looks to deliver the same kind of creepy, pulpy awesomeness as Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and BPRD books, but with some of the quirky humor of the critically acclaimed Goon series. Definitely give it a look this Wednesday! Also, remember, while we’ve ordered heavily on this one, it’s a Boom book, and they go out of print quick, so if you’re interested in this one and can’t make it in this week, shoot me an email about setting one aside for you. I’m pretty sure we won’t sell out that fast, but, with the low print runs on Boom titles, I always like to put that out there.

A lot of you are already familiar with MAX BROOKS. One of the few guys who’s able of coming remotely close to Robert Kirkman (author of Walking Dead) in terms of good zombie storytelling. Brooks hit the scene with his Zombie Survival Guide, and then World War Z, both of which added a whole new life to zombie fiction.
Now, Brooks, is taking a stab at doing sequential art, and he’s bringing his zombie world to us in the pages of the ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE: RECORDED ATACKS book this week. It’s a historical backtracking of zombie attacks going as far back as the days of the Roman Empire.
Either way, we know that Brooks has the chops to write some compelling, and refreshing zombie stuff, and while horror comics are plentiful these days, we feel this one’l
Johns’s new Adventure Comics series though is adding so many interesting, compelling dimensions to Connr Kent’s character, not to mention the dynamics between him and his supporting cast, that it’s hard NOT to dig it. Not to mention, Francis Manapul is delivering some gorgeous pencils on each and every issue.

Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s Marvels Project has been a fantastic read so far. And, this is coming from a guy who really has no strong affinity to the Invaders-era Marvel Characters. But, in this limited series, where Brubaker is unravelling the official 616 Origin of the Marvel Universe, he is making characters that never clicked for me very cool.

Sure, the simple way of looking at it is it’s the birth of Superhumans during WW 2, a result of the arms race between Nazi Germany and the Allies. But, if you read a little deeper into the clues Brubaker’s laying, he’s laying out a map that makes sense of the continuity of the Marvel Universe. Basically, connecting the old pulp Marvel characters like Ka-Zar and Rawhide Kid, and linking their beginnings with the Marvel Universe as a whole.

Plus, you get scene after scene of Namor dropping waves on Nazis, and breaking their necks as they drown to a watery grave below. How can you not love that?

More or less, there’s a lot more to the Marvels Project than meets the eye. I suggest clicking here to read this interview with ED BRUBAKER about the Marvels Project in it’s place in the Marvel Universe. A brand new ongoing Spidey series is always something to shine notice on. Now, while we were a little lukewarm at first about the idea of adding another book just when the character was starting to get back to being awesome (you know, too much too soon and all), we do have to admit that we’re intrigued to see how this ties into the upcoming Spider-man: Gauntlet storyline that everyone is excited about.

And, for those of you die-hard fans of the Wallcrawler, you get another monthly dose of Spidey, so that’s always a plus too.

But, honestly, my main interest in this one is the Gauntlet. That storyline is going to SMOKE. Plus, the art on this one looks pretty sick, and it’s bringing back some characters which I remember from when I was a kid, which is kind of cool. Looking forward to giving this one a read and seeing how it is.

And, who better to key into this natural love for pirate mayhem then the fine folks at Dynamite Entertainment, the publishers of such modern-day revivals as Sherlock Holmes. They know how to take a classic and legendary character and resurrect them with the kind of modern storytelling, and cutting edge artwork that makes comics so damn good these days. This new series looks to explore the entire, fantastic legacy of Blackbeard the Pirate King, starting with his days as a child, and going all the way through to his savage, murderous ways. The art looks outstanding, and the idea looks solid enough for this one to be worth taking a look at.

Did you know there’s still people out there who don’t want us reading comic books? That’s right, folks, it’s rare, but there are people who’d love to see comics burnt pile upon pile, just like back during the whole Frederic Wertham scandals of the ’40s and ’50s. Why? Don’t ask me, I never understood myself. Fact is, comics are one of the last art forms to still remain predominantly untouched by the hands of mega-conglomerates. Oh, I know, Disney bought Marvel, Time Warner owns DC, and this causes them to ge their hands into the media aspects of the characters. But, lets be real, you can do stuff in comics nowadays that you can’t get away with anywhere else. Not even talking about stuff that’s graphic, but just things that are unconventional or non-traditional in approach. And, this, my friends, is one of the things I love about comics.

It’s also one of the things that some people hate about them. Anyways, let me end my rant, and get to the point. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund does a lot of good by providing legal help for comic book creators, retailers, and everything in between in case they get hit with some kind of severe legal case. And why are they there? Well, comic shop retailers, we don’t make a lot of dough, so we don’t exactly have the funds to get a top notch legal defense team. And, comic book creators, being independent contractors, for the most part, often find themselves in binds as well, where they can’t afford that kind of help. That’s what we have the CBLDF for, among other things.

And, this Wednesday, they’re releasing the second in their Liberty Comics line, which will include a story by Jim Lee and Neil Gaiman, as well as work by Brian Wood, Paul Pope, Mike Allred, Jason Aaron, Ben Templesmith, and many more.

So, not only are you supporting a good cause, but you’re getting a good slab of reading!
It’s finally here! This highly anticipated new Image title from the amazingly talented ROBERT KIRKMAN (you know, the man responsible for WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, and most recently, DESTROYER) and comics legend TODD MCFARLANE (the creator of Spawn, and one of the biggest comics superstars from back in the day) is set to be one of the biggest new series launches in a while. It’s got a very talented line-up onboard (Kirkman, McFarlane, and then Invincible artist Ryan Ottley), and a very cool, sounding plot and concept. On first look, the series looks kind of like a supernatural spin on Spider-man, but knowing Kirkman, we know there’s a lot more going on than that.

The solicits about the plot haven’t given us a lot to go on as far as what the story is all about, but what we do know is it centers around a man who’s drawn into a world of espionage and murder by his brother’s ghost. I just got done reading the 10 preview pages up at CBR, and I have to say I’m pumped. This one looks like a fresh, cutting edge new superhero book that’s going to be a fine addition to Robert Kirkman’s incredible line-up of solid work.

Not to mention, it marks a very significant event with the return of Todd McFarlane to picking up the art chores on a book. It’s been years, and years since McFarlane has committed to a series, but here he is, and it’s with one of the most talented young writers in the field today.

One thing I’d like to say that is if you are interested in Haunt, be sure to snatch it up this week, or get in touch about having one set aside. While we’ve ordered a good deal of these, and don’t plan on selling out, we do know that Image tends to run lower print runs on things than the bigger publishers (Chew, for example, was a case of this).

Anyways, folks, make sure you give HAUNT a look here at Third Eye this Wednesday. We’re stoked on this one! A PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT! If you read just one X-Book, this is it!

Astonishing X-Men has been long regarded as one of Marvel’s prestigious top tier titles. Joss Whedon and John Cassaday kicked this one off with an epic 25 issue run that still has yet to be matched as one of the best X-Men stories of the last two decades. They set the tone for the series well, giving us a book that, while relevant in regards to the Marvel Universe and set in the normal continuity, was still self-contained, and not bogged down with the messy plot threads that many X-Books of the past have been. When their run was finished, Ellis took it over with artist Bianchi, and while the storytelling was solid, Bianchi’s art didn’t quite deliver what we had come to expect.

Now, with a brand new story arc beginning in this week’s issue 31, and with new series artist Phil Jiminez, we’re stoked to see the book returning to the former heavy weight greatness it had held before. Honestly, it wasn’t until I read the free sketchbook preview Marvel had sent us to give out a couple weeks ago, that I was totally sold on the new run. After checking out some of Jiminez’s art on the book, and reading what Ellis has planned for the story, I think this one is going to be a big-time must-read. Everyone wants to like the X-Men, and everyone wants to read the X-Men, but it’s rare that you’re given a book that captures the spirit of the characters as well as Astonishing X-Men. This book isn’t bogged down with characters you could care less about, this IS the X-Men. Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Beast, Colossus, and more. The icons.

And, what’s the scoop on this new arc? Abigail Brand, Agent of S.W.O.R.D is on a one-way death trip, and she’s taking (unwillingly) in a spaceship that’s careening towards Earth. Who does she call in to help prevent this? The X-Men, of course. But, that’s too simple, right? Of course it is, this is Warren Ellis, we’re talking about here folks, the writer of critically acclaimed works like PLANETARY, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE AUTHORITY, and cult favorites like NEXTWAVE, IGNITION CITY and FELL. If there’s one thing Ellis knows how to do right (as evidenced from his genre-defining run on The Authority), it’s larger than life superhero madness, and insanity. And, heck, I think this may even be the first time I’m excited about seeing The Brood returning to the X-Books (judging from the sketchbook, they’re being approached in a very ALIENS-esque HR Giger kind of way).

THE BEST CRIME NOIR COMIC… EVER! A PERSONAL FAVORITE!
Here’s one I’m super excited about, folks! Fresh off of their epic, apocalyptic superhero noir tale INCOGNITO, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips return with CRIMINAL this Wednesday. First off, if you dug INCOGNITO, then you need to read CRIMINAL, it’s pretty much the same book, through and through. Same tone, same vicious writing, same incredible atmospheric artwork, all in all, a fantastic series.

Now, if you’re unfamiliar with CRIMINAL, and worried about jumping in on the middle of a story, DON’T BE. Each CRIMINAL story is self-contained, and each story arc can be in any order you please. The beauty of CRIMINAL is how it’s all one self-contained universe, so you might see characters in a story arc that are background characters, but then in a later story arc become central focuses. That’s the beauty. Whether you jump in fresh, or have been reading for a long time, Criminal is a very rewarding, and very satisfying title.

Why do I like CRIMINAL so much? It’s the best crime genre comic I’ve ever read. I’d even go as far as to rank it above modern classics like 100 BULLETS and SIN CITY. It’s THAT good. Brubaker’s writing captures the essence of despair that all good crime noir should have, and his characters are so well-developed, that you realize there’s no good, there’s no bad, there’s just people and the messes they get themselves into. Sean Phillips manages to perfectly pull you in with his moody, dark artwork, so well in fact that you can almost hear an old Tom Waits song playing in the background, and smell the cheap whisky and cigarettes as Brubaker weaves the tale.

Criminal is comics at their best, and we highly, HIGHLY, recommend it. THE SINNERS begins this Wednesday, focusing on TRACY LAWLESS, an ex-marine who’s been forced into working for the wrong side of the law. And, with the bodies of dead gangsters piling up across the city, who does the underworld go to for justice? Mr. Lawless.

BATMAN AND ROBIN CONTINUES TO BE THE BEST BATMAN TITLE HITTING THE STANDS!

Are you reading Batman and Robin yet? Folks, this is the BEST Batman book we’re reading, and that’s a big statement considering how many great Bat-books are hitting the racks these days. Hell, this is the best Bat-book we’ve read in YEARS. Morrison delivers a fresh, post-modern take on the concept of Batman and Robin, as Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and Damian (the offspring of Bruce Wayne andTalia Al Ghul) function together as the 21st century’s Batman and Robin. This book is very nice and self-contained, tightly written, and features some of the best sequential art you’re gonna see on the four color page these days (okay, I know, they’re not four color anymore.. lemme have my fun!) Seriously though, everything from the introduction of compelling new Batman Rogues, to the character dynamics between Batman and Robin, this book is one breakneck, action-packed, and well-characterized ride.

In the current story arc, a new dynamic duo of the mysterious Red Hood and Scarlet, are murdering low-level thugs, crooks, and wanna-be Rogues. The strength of the beginning of the arc is Morrison’s development of the relationship between Red Hood and Scarlet, and the unhealthy bond they share. And, with the addition of another great new Batman rogue, the Gravedigger, I think Morrison is keeping the momentum on this one going well. Not to mention Phillip Tan’s dark, haunting artwork is the perfect fit for the dark direction of this current story arc.

Not reading BATMAN AND ROBIN yet? We still have plenty of issues 1,2,3 and 4 here at Third Eye for you to catch up with. Give em a look!

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR GARTH ENNIS: CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE DEBUTS, CROSSED #7 AND THE BOYS #35 BOTH ARRIVE!

GARTH ENNIS (writer of THE BOYS, CROSSED & PREACHER) PUSHES THE ENVELOPE EVEN MORE WITH THE START OF HIS NEW SERIES, CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD: THE LAST BATTLE, THIS WEDNESDAY!

Like the gang of hooligans we are here at Third Eye, you know we appreciate some of the finer things in sequential art… and horrifying end of the world tales featuring the razor-sharp wit and twisted mind of GARTH ENNIS (PREACHER, THE BOYS, CROSSED, ect ect) is right up our alley. And, this week with issue #7 of Crossed shipping, and only two issues of that sick and twisted masterpiece left, you’re going to need something to fill the void it’ll leave, right?

Well, here comes Ennis with his end of the world epic, CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD. A true, twisted masterpiece in the making. The story focuses on Danny Wormwood, Anti-Christ, Cable TV Exec, and not really as bad of a guy as you’d think. He’s basically rebelled against his dad (you know, the Devil), and said SCREW IT, I’m not bringing about the apocalypse, I’m going to leave humanity to their own devices, and see what comes of it. Oh, and he’s also got the power to change ONE thing once a day. That’s his little magic power. After having averted the apocalypse, it looks like there’s something worse than having Satan in charge of hell, and that’s having the corrupt Pope Jacko. Now, Hell’s about to unleash on Earth, and if you guys know Ennis, you know it’s going to be stomach-turning.

Folks, if you’re a fan of THE BOYS, CROSSED, or PREACHER, then you have got to give CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD a go this Wednesday. And, don’t worry, we still have plenty of the $1.99 Preview one-shot of this series in stock too, if you wanted to scoop that up.

And, don’t forget, also hitting this week we’ve got the newest issues of both THE BOYS (THE BOYS #35) and CROSSED (CROSSED #7). It’s an Ennis triple-threat!

Top-level creative talent delivering one-shots that manage to both stand alone on their own merits, AND link the overall theme of the conclusion of DARK REIGN together. This Wednesday, one of the most exciting chapters of the DARK REIGN LIST countdown hits. Why am I so pumped? Well, it’s SECRET WARRIORS, which is probably one of the BEST monthly series Marvel is putting out right now. And, it’s featuring the writing of SECRET WARRIORS writer (and lets face it, overall mastermind) Jonathan Hickman, who is an amazing new talent that’s been breaking out recently at Marvel (take a look at some of his older Image stuff like NIGHTLY NEWS, TRANSUMAN and PAX ROMANA) and superstar artist, ED MCGUINESS (most recently known for his stint on HULK). These two guys are both big favorites of mine when it comes to creators, and I really think they’re going to deliver one of the best DARK REIGN LIST one-shots out of the entire round (although Jason Aaron and Ribic’s upcoming Wolverine and Remender/Romita’s Punisher look like they’ll be serious contenders).

This one features Osborn and his need to eliminate Nick Fury, but first.. he needs Fury to uncover a breach in National Security. How’s he going to manage that, AND eliminate him at the same time? This one’s sure to be filled with espionage awesomeoness that you’re gonna flip out over. Not to mention the role that Fury and his Secret Warriors have played in the DARK REIGN has been pretty huge, so you know this one-shot is going to play into the grand scheme of things in a big way.

Daredevil has been one of Marvel’s best kept secrets for years, and years. It never seems to get the respect it deserves, but it’s the book that if you’re reading it, then you already know how consistently good it is. From the groundbreaking run of BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and ALEX MALEEV (the team behind the new SPIDER-WOMAN series) to the recent run of ED BRUBAKER, this book always seems to host some of the most exciting talent to find their way to Marvel.

Daredevil 501 kicks off after the totally epic DD #500 which not only wrapped up many plot threads of Brubaker’s run, but set things up perfectly for Diggle. While we don’t know a lot about the direction the book is taking, we do know that the creative team of Diggle and De La Torre is definitely a good choice for the book. Diggle’s knack for the seedier side of the Marvel universe, and his intense action-oriented storytelling and pacing is a perfect fit for De La Torre’s gritty, dark pencils. #501 is the perfect spot to jump on if you haven’t yet come aboard with Daredevil, and seen just how great this book has been. Everything from the prior story arcs have been wrapped up nicely enough to where you can come into the story clean, so give it a shot, and find out why we’re so excited about this book, and it consistently remains at the top of our read stack when it ships.

Plus, it’s got lots of ninjas, and lots of ol’ hornhead breaking bones in Hell’s Kitchen. This looks like it’ll be a very good run.

For over a decade and a half, Warren Ellis and John Cassaday have enthralled us with their amazing exploration of the world of serial fiction in the pages of PLANETARY. I’d go as far as to call this one of the most important series of the last twent years, because not only is it an amazing piece of work, but it’s influence is very noticable today. It’s been a long time to reach this conclusion, but this Wednesday, the final issue arrives.

For those of you who’re familiar with Planetary, no more information is needed, as this is something we’ve all been waiting on for a very long time. However, for those of you who’re not yet familiar with this great piece of work, here’s the run-down. The Planetary Organization bill themselves as Archaeologists of the Impossible. They track, and monitor the secret history of the world. In the world of Planetary, ALL pop culture, science fiction, pulp fiction, and comic book storytelling exist as reality. This means that in this world everything from Godzilla and Monster Island to the Justice League of America are REAL. Of course, all of these are represented with archetypes representing the characters (because of licensing issues), but in the first three issues, you see the Justice League killing off the pulp heroes of yesteryear (Doc Savage, The Shadow, ect), the graveyard that is Monster Island featuring the bloated corpse of Mothra, and the rotting remains of Godzilla, and then a very John Woo/Chow Yun Fat-esque ghost cop. And that’s just the first three issues!

The Planetary group consists of four members, Jakita Wagner, who is super-strong, and invulnerable, The Drummer, who can detect and manipulate information streams, Elijah Snow, who can extract heat from nearby substances and freeze them, and then the mysterious Fourth Man who funds the group, and could be anyone from Bill Gates to Donald Trump. The book references everything from Sherlock Holmes, Hellblazer, and Green Lantern to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, HP Lovecraft, and ’50s Sci-Fi/Horror movies.

And of course, every good series needs worthy adversaries… and they exist in the mysterious Four, who are basically the Fantastic Four gone EVIL.

We HIGHLY recommend checking out Planetary if you haven’t already, there’s three trade paperbacks available collecting the first the first 18 issues of the series, and a fourth trade collecting Planetary crossovers with HP Lovecraft, Superman, Batman, and more.

This week in BATMAN ANNUAL #27, “EIGHT DEADLY SIN” begins, and will continue in the pages of DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #11, featuring the usual Gotham cast, but focusing on Azrael, Death’s Dark Knight, these annuals lead directly into the brand new AZRAEL ongoing series hitting later this month!

Vertigo’s FABLES series is one of the most incredible things we’ve read, and it still continues to impress us issue after issue. While there’s been only a couple of lulls in the overall story, we’ve found the entire thing to be a compelling, and interesting read. The world of Fables, and the real-world reinventions of classic Fairy Tale characters as fleshed out characters with real motives, character flaws, and more has kept us hooked for many years.

This Wednesday, Vertigo debuts the first prose novel set in the FABLES universe. This one, Willingham (series creator, and the author of this novel as well), is said to be accessible for anyone, whether you’ve read FABLES or not. However, if you haven’t tried FABLES, we advise you do, it’s too good NOT to!

What is Peter and Max about? It’s the dark story of Peter Piper, of Pickled Pepper fame, and Max Piper, the Pied Piper of Hamelin. This story features the dangers of the Pied Piper, and how Peter Piper will do anything in his power to protect his wife, Bo Peep, from his evil brother.

Knowing Willingham, and the world of Fables, this one will be full of twists, and strong characterzation, that not only add many more layers to the world of FABLES, but also deliver a satisfying stand-alone story as well.

The first issue of Marvel’s new Moon Knight ongoing series WOWed the heck out of us. Between Hurwitz’s fantastic storytelling and characterization, to Jerome Opena’s awesome artwork, it was everything a solid, well-written action-packed comic should be. The series gives us a fresh new take on Moon Knight, as he’s less about the schizophrenic madness, and personal demons, and more about a focused, direct assault on all that he deems wrong with the world. Now, don’t go and think that ol’ Moon Knight hasn’t lost his crazy edge.. lets just say he’s more.. methodical in his madness.

The first issue kicked off with what felt like a DIE HARD movie set in the Marvel Universe. Guns blazing, buildings getting smashed to pieces, and Moon Knight walking out of the carnage, on the jumbotron screen in Times Square.. in BROAD DAYLIGHT!

This second issue, we see Moon Knight taking the fight straight to Osborn, and you can bet it’s going to be one heck of a read.

Miss the first one? Don’t sweat it, we still have plenty in stock here at Third Eye. Give it a shot this week, cause this is really one of the coolest new Marvel books we’ve seen in quite some time.

RESURRECTION TRADE PAPERBACK AVAILABLE AT THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY.. AND IT’S ONLY $6 FOR 184 PAGES OF STORY! WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A DECADE OF PLANET EARTH BEING OCCUPIED BY ALIENS?

Resurrection is one of those overlooked little series from the last couple years that really deserves a read. Picture this, the planet Earth has been occupied for over a decade by aliens, nicknamed “bugs.” The big twist that kicks off the story is the alien invaders up and leave one day, without reason, leaving the human survivors to wonder just why the aliens have left, and what could be wrong with the planet for them to abandon it?

The book’s a pretty solid read, and while it’s not heavyhitter over-the-top material, it’s a great story to check out for the low price of $5.99. The concept is very interesting, and the art, while it takes getting used to, carries the story well. The invasion, and it’s effects, being told mostly through flashbacks (ala LOST) make the story even more compelling. This is the first six issues of the series, and it’s Annual, and if you dig it, the current series is happening right now (which is about 3 or 4 issues deep). So if you’re looking for a neat little sci-fi read, give this one a look!

ROBOTIKA VOLUME 1 HARDCOVER AVAILABLE THIS WEDNESDAY. A STEAMPUNK SAMURAI WESTERN THAT DELIVERS BIG-TIME! A MUST-READ!

Folks, DON’T sleep on Archaia! Between, Oko, the Killer, and now Robotika, they are putting out some of the most exciting independent books to come down the pipeline in the past couple of years. A lot of these series were criminally overlooked at first, but now that they’re hitting collected editions, they’re definitely worth checking out.

Robotika is especially cool, a steampunk samurai western, is the best way we could describe this one. It’s a world filled with silent samurai and shady geisha, deadly mecha, and corporate corruption. The story centers around Niko, a bodyguard for the queen, who’s on a mission to recover a stolen invention that could trigger a bloody and brutal civil war.

This one is a flawless blend of the wild west, and samurai epics. It’s like Sam Peckinpah, Sergio Leone, Akira Kurosawa, Willim Gibson, and Masumne Shirow put their heads together and created the most kick-ass genre-smash-up ever.

STAFF PICKS FOR LAST WEDNESDAY 9/30/09
Steve – SHANG CHI MASTER OF KUNG FU SUPER SPECIAL – Chockfull of gritty, pulpy kung-fu action, this one-shot was AWESOME. Four great stories, from four great creative teams, including Jonathan Hickman-penned Deadpool / Shang-Chi motorcycle madness and Paul Gulacy doing the character he does best. AWESOME.

Torma – MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN #5 – It brings everything Marvel Zombies back around to the center. Explains why the Sentry was breaking through time and space, and there’s even a zombie rip-off of the Justice League! ZOMBIE JUSTICE LEAGUE!

Trish – BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS #2 – I know absolutely nothing about the Teen Titans, but I LOOVE this mini-series. Blackest Night has gotten me hooked too! And the writing makes characters I’m not too familiar with very well fleshed out.

Blackest Night continues to be one of the best damn things hitting the Third Eye racks. The storytelling all across the board continues to not only stay strong, and consistent, but even has been improving. Usually with big events, things kind of lose their way mid-way through. Not the case with Blackest Night. This one has been a solid hit, and all of the tie-in books have been A+ material.

This leads me to this week’s Blackest Night Titans #2. The first issue of this REALLY impressed me. Let me start off by saying I have never been a big Titans fan. I really dug Geoff Johns’s run on Teen Titans, and I’ve got a fond place in my heart for all the classic Marv Wolfman and George Perez stuff. But, outside of that, never been a big fan. Which is why it surprised me how into BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS I was. This was a great first issue, and as someone who hasn’t been following the Titans for years upon years, I didn’t feel lost at all. In fact, it was the perfect refresher and entry point into characters I hadn’t paid close attention to in a very long time. Great artwork, great storytelling, I was impressed. And, hitting this week, we’ve got the second issue with BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS #2. If you missed the first one, fear not, Third Eye Faithful, we have plenty still in stock here at Third Eye for you to catch up with. Click here to check out a preview of BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS #2!

And, coming right alongside this week’s Blackest Night Titans, is the next issue of the consistently fantastic GREEN LANTERN core title. If you’re only following two books in this entire event, then this and BLACKEST NIGHT are the ones you need to be reading. In fact, Geoff Johns (who writes both), has been fleshing out minor plot points in the main series in the pages of the Green Lantern monthly. Last month, we got a nice little look at Sinestro and the Star Sapphire, and their encounter. And, for months, even before Blackest Night, we’ve seen Mongul slowly taking control of the Sinestro Corps. Sinestro’s after Mongul, and Hal Jordan’s after Sinestro.. could the two form an unlikely alliance? Well, from the sounds of things, it looks like all those Black Rings that’re bringing the fallen Sinestro Corps members back from the grave are gonna put ALL three of these guys as marked men. How awesome does this sound, right? More of that solid, action-packed storytelling from Geoff Johns, paired up with some gorgeous art from Doug Mahnke. OCTOBER CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: GEOFF JOHNS, WRITER OF BLACKEST NIGHT, FLASH REBIRTH, AND MUCH MORE! PLUS, WIN A FREE COPY OF ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH

Geoff Johns has been the one man task force that’s single-handedly brought the DCU back to center-stage. For the last few years, he’s built a name for himself with critically acclaimed runs on everything from Green Lantern and JSA to Action Comics and The Flash.

The man has an incredible talent for taking characters that had once fallen out of favor with fans, or had never really been given the props they deserve, and making them into superstar titles. He’s able to take Silver Age concepts and apply an amazing 21st Century approach to things that once may have not worked.

This month at Third Eye, we’re going to be debuting our new and improved monthly Creator Spotlight. We plan on rotating this once a month, and spotlighting a different creator at the end of every month. Sometimes it’ll be artists, sometimes writers, and sometimes specific teams of artists and writers that really mesh well together. We figured with how stoked everyone is about Blackest Night, we’d shine the light on Mr. Geoff Johns and some of his work you may not have already read.

Also, as an added bonus, we’re going to be running a special promotion all through October, beginning this Wednesday (9/30, okay, we know it’s not October, sue us), whenever you buy a trade paperback that’s written by Geoff Johns, you will be given a raffle ticket for a chance to win a copy of the ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH (a $75 value) that’s due out this April. We’ll be having the raffle on October 31st, and the winner will be given a certificate to redeem for the ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH when it ships in April. And yes, you can get one ticket for EVERY Geoff Johns written trade paperback you purchase. So, if you get three or four trades written by the man himself, then you’ll get three or four raffle tickets.

Why’re we doing this? Cause Geoff Johns has written a lot of killer books, and we figure that a lot of you may have already read Rebirth, but still want the Absolute Edition, without having to buy the same story all over again. Well, here’s your chance to get it… FREE!

Now, before we move on, we’re going to give you guys a run down on some of our favorite Geoff Johns trades, including some lesser known ones you might not be familiar with:

The Flash: Blood Will Run – Collecting the beginning of Geoff Johns’s amazing run on the Flash, Blood Will Run sets the tone perfectly for Johns’s work on the Flash. I have to say that Johns’s Flash stuff became my favorite Flash run of all-time, and if you’re looking to find out what he was doing with Wally West before he took on Barry Allen, then Blood Will Run is where you want to begin.

Superman and the Legion of Superheroes - While Last Son was the first in Johns’s awesome run on Action Comics (and a damn good start it was), Superman and the Legion of Superheroes remains our favorite Johns story in his Action run. Maybe it’s because it made me appreciate how cool the Legion can be, but this was a solid story.

Infinite Crisis – The event that set the stage for the last few years of DCU history, this one is where Superboy Prime really came into his own as a pure jerk. Not to mention it brought back the multiverse in a pretty cool fashion. Johns shines on this one, big time, a sign of things to come.

Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Wars – Three trades, all awesome. If you haven’t read this, and you’re loving Blackest Night, then you gotta check it out. This sets the stage PERFECTLY for everything that is going on right now in the DCU.

The Thing: Freakshow & The Vision: Yesterday and Tomorrow - Geoff Johns did Marvel Comics? Yup. For a very short stint he did, and they ruled. In Freakshow, Johns shows the Thing travelling across the country where he encounters Kree and Skrulls fighting over a baby Watcher. And, then in the Vision limited series, Johns adds more depth to the Vision’s character in four issues than anyone has in ages.

Green Lantern: Rebirth - How could we not mention Rebirth? Johns brought Hal Jordan back in this modern classic, and it still stands as one of the best limited series of this decade. Great artwork, and great storytelling make this one an absolute must-read.

The Possessed – Geoff Johns does Horror Comics. This one is pretty cool, and has an Exorcist meets Comic Book kind of feel to it. It also shows Johns’s skills when it comes to telling different stories, and is a very cool one-shot survival horror/religious horror story.

Teen Titans: A Kid’s Game - This book made me like the Teen Titans. A new generation of Titans featuring Tim Drake, Impulse, Superboy, and more. The first trade starts things off with a bang, with the very memorbale incident of Deathstroke blowing Impulse’s kneecaps off.

Booster Gold: 52 Pick-Up - Who would think that Booster Gold could not only carry an ongoing series, but a successful one at that? And without Blue Beetle!? Well, don’t get us wrong, we love Booster, but we were skeptical. Johns manages to kick things off right as he takes Booster in and out of time, through pivotal points of DCU history. A great, fun read!

JSA: Darkness Falls – The first trade in Geoff Johns’s career-defining run on the JSA. David Goyer started things off right, but it was Johns who turned this book into a big hit. Too many good story arcs to get into here, but he is single-handedly responsible for bringing characters like Black Adam, Hawkman, and Dr. Fate back to the center-stage of the DCU.

These are just a few of Johns’s awesome stories, be sure to check our Creator Spotlight in the store this week to see all the cool stuff this guy has done!

BATMAN: WIDENING GYRE #2 FROM CLERKS & MALLRATS DIRECTOR KEVIN SMITH HITS THIS WEDNESDAY!

The first issue of KEVIN SMITH’S Widening Gyre book knocked our socks off. We dug Cacophony, but there were a few minor complaints we had with it. Just little stuff. Widening Gyre? No complaints, none at all. He’s hit his stride with this one, and looks to be delivering some stellar stuff with this series. This one is set outside of the current Bat-continuity, so Bruce is still Batman, and Dick is still Nightwing. And, that’s one of the things we really liked about the book. The dynamic between Nightwing and Batman. Nightwing is not dark, nor brooding, and Bruce has evolved into his stone cold self. So, the interplay between the two, including Nightwing reminscing about days gone past, was very good. The first issue gave us murder victims with roots and vines protruding from all of their bodily orifices, in a very bloody fashion, which then leads us straight to an Arkham Asylum that’s heavily entrenched in plant-life. And, just when you think we’re seeing a killer Poison Ivy story unfold, Kevin Smith brings in Etrigan, the Demon… and makes him one hell of a vicious character.

All in all, this one got off to a great start, and we’re pumped to see where it goes next. Plus, Walt Flanagan’s pencils have improved a lot since last year’s Cacophony, and his style has actually grown on us a lot. If you missed #1, don’t worry, we’ve still got it in stock to check out, and catch up with.

ULTIMATUM HARDCOVER AVAILABLE AT THIRD EYE WEDNESDAY, COLLECTING JEPH LOEB AND DAVID FINCH’S OVER-THE-TOP MARVEL MELTDOWN EPIC!

One of last year’s biggest Marvel events was the destruction of the Ultimate Marvel Universe in the pages of ULTIMATUM. The plot? Plain and simple, Magneto goes mad, gets Thor’s hammer, and proceeds to bring about the end of the world. Tons of characters die. TONS. I mean, if you want to see heads being squashed, or blown off by optic blasts, then you need to read ULTIMATUM.

What really made this series a great read was David Finch’s stellar artwork. Finch always shines, but drawing widescale destruction, and nearly EVERY Ultimate Marvel character you can think of, really brought out the best in him.

This week, the hardcover collecting the entire run hits, and you can now witness everything from the Blob eating Wasp, to Hank Pym biting off the Blob’s head… just trust us, folks, this one is CRAZY!

DIE HARD: YEAR ONE #1 – THE OFFICIAL PREQUEL STORY TO THE CLASSIC 1988 DIE HARD FILM! There are some things that are just plain and simple true in American pop culture. You always shoot a zombie in the head. Sloth loves Chunk. And, don’t feed Gremlins afer midnight. Another one of those beautiful truths is that DIE HARD ALWAYS rules. ALWAYS. Even, when it’s not that great, it’s still pretty damn good. So, you can understand how excited I was when I found out about this official prequel to the DIE HARD films, featuring a rookie John McClane, encountering his first catastrophe.

And, I know that a lot of you are big DIE HARD fans as well. While you get a good feel for the character in the first movie, this new ongoing series from Howard Chaykin features a much rawer, ready to bust some heads John McClane, who’s fresh out of the Marines and straight into the NYPD.It’s set in the ’70s, a decade before the first film, and features McClane dealing with the ups and downs of being a young cop in ’70s New York.

FANS OF INCOGNITO, CHECK THIS OUT!

Before Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips wowed us with CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO, they cut their teeth on a very underrated cult favorite known as SLEEPER. The first trade collecting the first 12 issues of Sleeper, “Season 1″, came out earlier this year. The second trade, collecting the final 12 issues of Sleeper, “Season 2″, arrives this Wednesday. And, we have to say, we’re stoked. It’s great to finally see this masterpiece in it’s entirety available in collected format.

The story? Holden Carver aka the Conductor, is a man who has been placed undercover into a criminal empire of metahumans. What’s Carver’s power? After his body had been grafted with an alien artificat, he has an enhanced healing power.. and more importantly, the ability to store pain he receives and then transfer it onto others. Of course, in true noir fashion, he hates his abilities, and would love to be done with them.

The path that Carver takes to rise through the criminal empire, making the rank of lieutenant is a fascinating one, and will keep you page-turning all the way through. If you’re a fan of either CRIMINAL, or INCOGNITO, then you must read SLEEPER. We currently have Sleeper Season One also in stock, as well as the prequel, POINT BLANK. However, if you’ve already read the first season, then we know you’re going already anticipating this collection.

Marvel Brings It’s Pulpy Roots Back With This Week’sSHANG-CHI: MASTER OF KUNG FU – DEADPOOL VERSUS SHANG-CHI! NEW FORMAT!

Way back in the day, Marvel used to publish some of it’s more edgier, and mature titles under an imprint named “Curtis Magazines.” The most well-known of these was the classic Savage Sword of Conan issues. The reasoning? Well, back in the ’70s, the comics code was still in full effect, and if you wanted to publish stuff that wasn’t code approved, you had to go the magazine route. This is kind of what brought about the popularity of magazines like Creepy, Vampirella, and Eerie. The result? Amazing, pulpy, gritty, and violent tales that were way ahead of their time. Characters like Dracula, and Conan, along with other characters that didn’t fit the traditional Marvel mold all received the big, grand, black and white magazine treatment.

Now, Marvel has brought the format back this week with the return of one of their best cult favorite characters, Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Master of Kung Fu, and with the way that characters like Iron Fist and Moon Knight have been developed and evolved with modern storytelling, we’re eager to see the treatment he receives. This is a special one-shot issue featuring some of Marvel’s rising star talents, like JONATHAN HICKMAN (Secret Warriors, Pax Romana), Jason Aaron, Charlie Huston (acclaimed crime novelist), and more. Oh, and it also features a nice little showdown between Shang-Chi and some guy named Deadpool that seems to be making a splash, wonder who he is? :)

So, for only $3.99, you get a big thick 48 page slab of violent, pulpy kung-fu action in the grand tradition of the Marvel Mags of yore. Personally, I am stoked for this. It’s something fresh, and it looks like it has some real teeth to it.

DC ANIMATED FEATURE, SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES, AVAILABLE TOMORROW AT THIRD EYE! PLUS, PICK UP THE GRAPHIC NOVEL THAT INSPIRED THE FEATURE!

DC has been releasing some very high quality animated features these past few years. From the recent (and very awesome) GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT to the Wonder Woman animated feature, they’ve been hitting them all out of the park. This week, one of my personal favorite stories gets the animated treatment, when SUPERMAN/BATMAN PUBLIC ENEMIES arrives.

Based off of the graphic novel by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness, this one is the perfect fit for the animated feature format, and we couldn’t be more stoked to see McGuinesses’s vibrant designs brought to life on the screen.

We’ll have both the DVD of Superman/Batman Public Enemies, and the graphic novel that inspired the film, available tomorrow at Third Eye.

What is the deal with Punisher: Rest in Pieces?

This week, Punisher Annual, delivers the set-up for one of Marvel’s quirkier stories this year. Personally, when I first heard mention of a “Frankenpunisher” storyline, I was kind of weirded out. I mean, I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, Rick Remender’s run on Punisher has been one of the best runs on the Punisher in a long time, outside of Ennis’s MAX run. It’s a completely different approach, but he has a very interesting way of fitting the character into the main line Marvel continuity that has had us coming back again, and again.

And, apparently, this one which synchs up with the DARK REIGN: THE LIST Punisher one-shot due out soon (with John Romita JR art too!), and the events that occur in that one-shot. From what I can gather, it involves The Punisher and Dark Wolverine putting a serious hurt on one another.

Either way, this Wednesday, the PUNISHER ANNUAL #1 is the set-up for the big events that are going to be happening with Punisher this year. All we know is it’s been cryptically nicknamed Frankencastle by Marvel, and we’re kind of intrigued to see just how exactly this is going to play out. It could either be REALLY awesome, or a dud. We have faith in Remender though to deliver.

STAFF PICKS FOR LAST WEEK’S BOOKS!
Trish - SPIDER-WOMAN #1 - This was a great first issue. It reminded me of La Femme Nikita, the spy TV series. Very dark, and maturely themed, it’s going to be cool to see Spiderwoman’s place in the Marvel Universe develop.

Torma – INCREDIBLE HULK #602 - The artwork on this run starting with issue #601 (the perfect jumping on point) is amazing. Ariel Olivetti’s incredible! This was a great issue, which gave us an old school battle royale between Skaar, the Son of Hulk and the Juggernaut. The Old Power vs. the Unstoppable.

Steve – SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN #1 - I expected this to be good, but, dude, I was still blown away. I’m not a big Superman guy, but when he’s done right, there’s no denying that the big blue boyscout is one of this medium’s most iconic characters. Geoff Johns sums it up in his re-telling of Superman’s history, and the meeting between him and Lex Luthor… VERY well done!
